3 Surah Al-Nur, Verse 56 و ع د الل ه ال ذ ين ا م ن وا م نك م و ع م ل وا الص الح ات ل ي س ت خ ل ف ن ه م ف ي الا ر ض ك م ا اس ت خ ل ف ال ذ ين م ن ق ب ل ه م و ل ي م ك نن ل ه م د ين ه م ال ذ ي ار ت ض ى ل ه م و ل ي ب د ل ن ه م م ن ب ع د خ و ف ه م ا م نا ي ع ب د ون ن ي لا ي ش ر ك ون ب ي ش ي ي ا و م ن ك ف ر ب ع د ذ ل ك ف ا و ل ي ك ه م ال ف اس ق ون Allah has promised those among you who believe and do good works that He will, surely, make them Successors in the earth, as He made Successors from among those who were before them; and that He will, surely, establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them; and that He will, surely give them in exchange security and peace after their fear; They will worship Me, and they will not associate anything with Me. Then whoso disbelieves after that, they will be the rebellious. 3

4 Creation of Allah Our universe and all that it contains is the creation of Allah To achieve the object of life, God, out of His benevolence raises prophets, who serve as models. Their mission has always been to guide mankind to its Creator, through their example and model. With the advancement and maturity of mankind God sent advanced and matured teachings suitable to their time. Allah says, This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favor upon you and have chosen for you Islam as religion. (5:4) 4

5 Quran says, There are no people (in the world) to whom We have not sent a Warner. (35:25) Belief in all the prophets and their messages is an integral part of the belief of every Muslim. The Holy Quran says, This messenger of Ours believes in that which has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers; all of them believe in Allah, and in His angels, and in His books, and in His Messengers, saying, We make no distinction between any of His Messengers. (2:286) 5

6 Three Kinds of Khilafat 1. Prophets, who are regarded as Khalifa 2. Prophets who are Khalifas of another and a greater Prophet, such as Israelite prophets who all were the Khulfas of Moses 3. Non-Prophet Khulfas of a Prophet, with or without temporal powers, such as godly people learned in the law. Their mission is to protect and preserve the law from being tampered with (5;45) 6

7 According to one saying of the prophet Mohammed the number of prophets who were chosen to convey the message of God to mankind is 124,000. The names of the following twenty-eight prophets are mentioned in the Holy Quran: Adam as, Noah as, Abraham as, Lot as, Ishmael as, Isaac as, Jacob as, Joseph as, Hud as, Salih as, Shuaib as, Moses as, Aaron as, David as, Solomon as, Elias (Elijah) as, Jonah as, Ezekiel (Dhul-Kifl) as, Elisha (Alyasa) as, Idris (Enoch) as, Job as, Zechariah as, John (Yahya) as, Jesus as, Luqman as, Ezra as, Dhul-Qarnain as, Mohammad saw. 7

8 First Kind of Khilafat: Prophets who are Khalifa The first kind of Khilafat mentioned in the Holy Quran is in which the prophets are regarded as Khalifa Quran tells us that this kind of Khilafat was bestowed upon Hadhrat Adam (as) and Hadhrat Dawood (as) 8

9 Hadhrat Adam (as) Hadhrat Adam (as) lived about 6,000 years ago Most probably he was born in present day Iraq Many people consider him to be the first man created by God on earth, which, however, is wrong Allah says in the Holy Quran, And when thy Lord said to the angels: I am about to place a vicegerent in the earth, they said, Wilt Thou place there in such as will cause disorder in it, and shed blood? And We Glorify Thee with Thy Praise and extol, Thy Holiness. He answered, I know what you know not. (2:31) 9

10 The arabic word Khailfa comes from the word Khulf Khalifat-ul-Masih II (rz) explained that the word Khalifa can be used in three different ways One who comes after and stands in place of someone An Imam, or supreme religious head A sovereign or king or ruler Therefore, it is clear that men has existed and lived on earth before him and to them he succeeded, or was sent as a Khalifa. 10

11 Hadhrat Adam (as), the progenitor of the human race, is only the first link in the present cycle, and not the very first man in God s creation Muhyud-Din Ibn Arabi, the great Muslim mystic says that once he saw himself in a dream performing a circuit of the Kabah Ibn Arabi asked the man, how long is it since you died? Man replied, more than forty thousand years, Ibn Arabi said, This period is much more than what separates us from Adam (as)! The man replied, Of which Adam (as) are you speaking? About the Adam (as) who is nearest to you or of some other? Ibn Arabi recollected the saying of the Holy Prophet (saw) that: God had brought into being no less than a hundred thousand Adams (as) Ibn Arabi said to himself, Perhaps this man who claims to be an ancestor of mine was one of the previous Adams (Futuhat ii, p.607) 11

12 Surah Al-Nur, Verse 56 The teaching which Hadhrat Adam (as) brought to his nation are mentioned in the Holy Quran as, It is decreed for thee that thou shalt not hunger therein nor shalt thou be naked; And that thou shalt not thirst therein, nor shalt thou be exposed to then. (20: ) 12

13 Hadhrat Dawood (as) Allah says in the Holy Quran, Then We said to him, O David, We have made thee a vicegerent in the earth; so judge between men with justice, and follow not vain desire, lest it should lead thee astray from the way of Allah. Surely, those who go astray from the way of Allah will have a severe punishment, because they forget the Day of Reckoning. (38:27) 13

14 Surah Al-Nur, Verse 56 Allah says, So they routed them by the command of Allah, and David slew Jalut, and Allah gave him sovereignty and wisdom, and taught him of what He pleased. (2:252) Talut has been spoken by the Quran as Hazum i.e. routing 14

15 Hadhrat Moosa (as) Moses(as) was a Prophet of God sent to free the people of Israel from Pharaoh's cruelties and bondage. It was for the purpose of freeing the Israelites in Egypt that Allah decided to raise Moses. It is in Allah s nature to raise Prophets whenever cruelty and transgression reaches its limit. Moses was chosen to end the tyrannical rule of Pharaoh whose end was imminent and inevitable. 15

16 Surah Al-Qasas, Verses 6-7 و ن ر يد ا ن ن م ن ع ل ى ال ذ ين اس ت ض ع ف وا ف ي الا ر ض و نج ع ل ه م ا ي م ة و نج ع ل ه م ال و ار ث ين و نم ك ن ل ه م ف ي الا ر ض و ن ر ي ف ر ع و ن و ه ام ان و ج ن ود ه م ا م ن ه م م ا ك ان وا ي ح ذ ر ون And we desired to show favour unto those who had been considered weak in the earth, and to make then leaders and to make then inheritors of our favours. And to establish then in the earth, and to show Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts that which they feared from them. 16

17 Hadhrat Moosa as s Miraculous Survival In chapter 28, verses 4-9, Allah gives an account of how baby Moses (as) was saved from Pharaoh s oppression. When Pharaoh was told about his death by a child born in his kingdom, he ordered all male children to be killed at birth. Moses survived with the will of Allah, Almighty. He did not only survive but also landed in the house of whose owner he was destined to destroy. 17

18 Surah Al-Qasas, Verses 4-9 We rehearse unto thee a true account of Mosses and Pharoah, for the benefit of a people who believe. Pharaoh behaved arrogantly in the land, and divided the people thereof into sections, seeking to weaken one section, slaying their male children and sparing the female ones. He was a worker of corruption. We desired to show favour to those who considered weak in the land, and to make them leaders and make them inheritors of Our bounties, and to establish them in the earth and to show Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts that which they feared. We directed the mother of Moses: Suckle him; and when thou fearest for his life cast him afloat into the river and dear not nor grieve; for We shall restore him to thee and shall make him a Messenger. Then a member of Pharaoh s family picked him up from the river that he might become an enemy and a source of sorrow for them. Verily, Pharaoh and Haman and their hosts were in error. 18

19 Hadhrat Haroon (as) Aaron was Moses (as) s brother. In chapter 26, verses 11-16, Allah grants Moses a helping hand: And remember when thy Lord called Moses, saying Go to the wrongdoing people- The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear God? He said, My Lord. I fear that they will treat me as liar; And my breast is straitened and my tongue is not fluent; therefore, send word to Aaron. And they have a charge against me, so I fear they will kill me. God said, Not so, go then, both of you, with our signs; we are with you and we hear. 19

20 Hadhrat Moosa as s Miraculous Survival Quran says, There are no people (in the world) to whom We have not sent a Warner. (35:25)While trying to end a quarrel, Moses (as) accidently kills a man he hoped to save. Having committed that unintentional murder, He fears persecution before delivering the message of Allah. He also fears defeat due to the lack of fluency in language. Thus, when Allah orders him to go forth and deliver the message, he prays for an extra helping hand in the form of his brother, Aaron (as) Aaron was Moses s(as) successor in a sense that he was the follower of the Law revealed to Moses(as). He was a helper appointed by Allah at the request of Moses(as) to deliver Allah s message and warn Pharaoh and his people. 20

21 Hadhrat Isa (as) Jesus came in fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. Chapter 3 verse 51 reveals his mission and purpose of coming: و م ص د قا ل م ا ب ين ي د ي م ن الت و ر اة و لا ح ل ل ك م ب ع ض ال ذ ي ح ر م ع ل ي ك م و ج ي ت ك م ب ا ي ة م ن ر ب ك م ف ات ق وا الل ه و ا ط يع ون I fulfill that which has been sent down before me, namely the torah, and shall make lawful for you some of of that which was forbidden to you. I come to you with a Sign from your Lord; so mindful of your duty to Allah obey me. 21

22 Hadhrat Isa (as) Jesus(as) was Moses s(as) successor in a sense that he came to revive the teachings of torah. Israelites had once again drifted away from the path of Allah and to bring them back, Allah brought about another miraculously born and raised Prophet. 22
