FOREWORD On behalf of the Iqbal Acadtemy Pakistan, we welcome the authors and participants to the National Iqbal Conference, The first International Iqbal Conference was held in 1977 on the eve of centenry celebrations of Allama Iqbal s birth anniversary. The second conference was held in 2003 during Iqbal Year coinciding with 125 th birth anniversary of the Poet-Philosopher. On both occasions, Iqbal scholars were invited to share their knowledge. However, this conference is unique in the sense that, for first time, papers were called from all over the country through campaign both in print and electronic media. The response was overwhelming. More than a hundred scholars from Gilgit Baltistan to Chaman showed interest in the conference and sent their abstracts. These abstracts were reviewed by a committee of renowned Iqbal Scholars and the feedback was conveyed to the participants. We hope this conference will prove to be the intended platform for researchers and those who are interested in Iqbal Studies to interact. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to show gratitude to all who volunteered to plan and support the National Iqbal Conference We would like to thank the technical committee members for their diligent reviews of the research papers. We are grateful to National History and Literary Heritage Division, Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage for their unrelenting support to hold the conference. 11 Abstracts of the Papers THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE EASTERN SPIRIT AND THE WESTERN THOUGHT IN MUHAMMAD IQBAL PERSONALITY Prof. Dr.Konul Bunyadzade Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Philosophy. The article considers a new, non-traditional form of dialogue: dialogue between the Eastern spirit and Western thought. There are some thinkers in whose personality can be investigated the highest level of the dialogue between the East and West and can be cognized the Truth. The author comments on this type of dialogue on the basis of the ideas of Muhammad Iqbal. In other words, this is the dialogue in the inner world of a person who can unite the Eastern wisdom, faith and the Western thought. The article consists of two parts. Firstly, the author studies the essence of the Eastern spirit and the Western thought. The attention is focused on the role of faith in the formation of spirit and mind. Secondly, in the article there are investigated two main directions of the nontraditional dialogue: I and society, Creator and human being. It helps to consider the human being from the divine/inner and material/external world. The conclusion of the article once again highlights the important ideas of this non-traditional dialogue which gives a possibility to unite two opposite poles the East and West.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 PHILOSOPHY OF IQBAL AND THE CULTURAL CONFILCT IN THE PRESENT AGE Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Kamal HOD Urdu, Sargodha University Bhakkar Campus. Present age favors a new discourse with regard to culture and civilization. Neither a nation can achieve progress without having a civilization, nor it can have its unique existence or emphasize its individuality. The civilization to which Iqbal alluded in his poetry and speeches for the Muslims of the sub- continent is based on those Islamic and oriental principles which are crucial for the formation of a peaceful and humanitarian society. Iqbal called the western civilization a hoax and an illusion. After studying him we come to the conclusion that civilization is based on the concept of motion and moral discipline. As life goes through constant change, similarly civilization keeps changing. Religion and morality play a key role in this change. Belief, thought and action, attitude of the masses, and social mood are factors that contribute to the evolution and growth of the civilization. In the present age, the disintegration of the national civilization in Pakistan can be avoided by the help of the thought of Iqbal. 21

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 IQBAL S APPROACH TO CRITICIZE THE WESTERN CIVILIZATION-AN ANALYTICAL STUDY IN THE LIGHT OF ALLAMAIQBAL S THOUGHT Dr. Riaz Ahmad Saeed Lecturer, National University of Modern Languages. riazussaeed@gmail.com Islamic civilization is proud of its revealed sources and guidance while the Western civilization claims out as one of the richest and liberal human ideas in the existing world.it is a status of Islamic and Western civilization. In some issues they agree but most of the time they disagree from each other. One of the most relevant and prominent personality and active voice in this field is the Poet of the East and famous Muslim thinker and philosopher is Allama Muhammad Iqbal. He adopts comparison method for analysis to study and criticize the West. Sometimes he appreciates and says Muslims to get benefit from the Western civilization but mostly he actively criticize the Western civilization. It is noticed that Iqbal want to get benefit from the Western technology and innovations but he strictly prohibits Muslims to enjoy the West social and moral values. According to Iqbal, the Western moral, political and social philosophy is poison for the East and especially for the Muslims. Therefore, it can be perceived that the Iqbal s strategy to study the West is dialogue and encounter. It is also stated we can get benefit from Iqbal s critique to nurture and reshape our sociopolitical and socioeconomic national narrative. This study examines the Iqbal s approaches to criticize the Western civilization in the light of his dynamic work including Nobel poetry and influential prose. 21

CLASH OF CIVILIZATION Abstracts of the Papers Dr. Bismina Siraj Head Urdu Dept, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University, Peshawar. Lack of education has worsened the situation even more. Islamic world was blessed to have a jewel like Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal who was a splendid poet and a great thinker. Iqbal presented his ideology of Khudi which highlighted the problems faced by Muslims these days but unfortunately the Muslim world has ignored his teachings whereas the West has truly benefitted from them. When the west was focused on developing educational institutions, the Muslim rulers were busy in jewelling their empires with lavish gardens and eye catching architecture. As a result, the west surpassed the Muslims in the fields of science and technology, modern inventions, medical and engineering whereas the Muslims lagged behind. In order to improve the existing bleak situation we need to devise an effective strategy. The solution to all our problems lies in Allama Iqbal s poetry. Iqbal was the one who could foresee the future. He already knew about the problems the Muslim world will have to face in the future. His famous Ideology of khudi if implemented in its true sense can eliminate all our current problems.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS AND THE ROLE OF EUROPE IN DEVELOPMENT OF IQBAL S POETIC AND SOCIO- POLITICAL THOUGHT Dr. Sher Ali Chairman/Sub-Editor, Assistant Prof., Alhamd Islamic University, Islamabad. sher.ali@alhamd.pk During his stay in England, Germany and other parts of Europe, Iqbal not only studied but also observed and analyzed the life, culture and civilization of the west and reached to some important conclusions. Iqbal, whose first lyrical poetry contains inter alia translations from Longfellow, Emerson, and Tennyson, became, in 1905, a student of the Hegelian philosopher Mc Taggart in Cambridge. He had the great luck to find a teacher like a famous Orientalist Sir Thomas Arnold who introduced him in both eastern and western thought, and gave him who had already shown his skill as a poet in his native tongue-urdu-the opportunity of finishing his study in Europe. Europe played an important role in the evolution and development of Iqbal s poetic, socio-political thought and his approach towards life and numerous aspects of it. In this brief Urdu article, the impact of Europe on Iqbal s thought has been studied and analyzed 21

Abstracts of the Papers THE STRATEGY OF IQBAL ABOUT UNIVERSAL CONSTITUTION Dr. Farhat Aziz Iqbal's universal constitution is the motto of all human beings regardless of color and religion. Iqbal's motto is to highlight the ''Ideology of Islam ''. However, his thought is not only restricted to East in its real sense but it is also in global world. To achieve this objective, Iqbal considers it important to have dialogue & coexistence between East and West. He also considers religion and dialogue among all philosophies and religions to be the only possible way towards harmony of mankind.this can guarantee tolerance, forbearance and respect for the dignity of all human beings for all religions of the world. In order to return to religion in human practices, Iqbal sees hope in the East only, because East has such ideological basis of religion that can revolutionize equality, brotherhood, respect and compatibility among all mankind. In this article, some essential points for strategy of Iqbal's Universal constitution will be analyzed.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 IQBAL S VIEWPOINT ON ISLAMIC AND WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A LOOK INTO CLASH AND DIALOGUE Dr. Mazher Hussain Assistant Professor, The Islamia University, Bahawalpur. dr.mazher@iub.edu.pk It is Islam that blessed the world with the identification of brotherhood, liberty, justice and equality and the very culture kept reigning supreme in the whole world for the long time. Then came the time, when the sun of the glorious culture of the Muslims began setting in which led to the downfall of the Muslims eclipsing the fair face of Islamic culture. It was the result of the role played by the Western and European culture. Analyzing the whole situation Iqbal declared Islamic culture the best of all. Iqbal gives message to the youth of the Muslim Ummah that they must study the western knowledge and art with keen interest, but should never ignore their cultural heritage as Islamic culture is a model of supreme moral. So, Iqbal lays great stress on the Muslims to become one with Islam devotedly and then lead life to modern education, the call of time. In his thesis published in Hindustan Review Iqbal writes that Islamic Culture is based on two things: i) Shariat-e-Ilahiya, ii) Equality among all the individuals of Millat He further, writes that Islam likes to see the country democratic based on unity of Muslim Ummah where as western culture is devoid of it. It does not prove at all that Iqbal was against the west. Rather, he wants to make advantage of the experiences of others, but not to follow them blindly. Only their positive aspects should be adopted as these have been given to them by Islam. 21

Abstracts of the Papers RELEVANCE OF IQBAL: INTELLECTUAL STAGNATION OR CEREBRAL INSPIRATION Muhammad Arif Khattak FAST National University, Chiniot-Faisalabad Campus. History is replete with examples of great men and great minds used for intellectual and social inertia. Thoughtless reverence for the great can result in intellectual paralysis and cultural stagnation. At times academicians and intellectuals abdicate their roles as critics of their societies because of non-discriminating reverence for their heroes and cult-figures. Allama Iqbal has suffered from a lousy intellectual input and analysis. The life of Iqbal, like hundreds of the like, has been used as an excuse to lack of mental and physical movement. Allama Iqbal s life and personality traits deserve to be followed for movement ahead. His iconoclastic attributes possess a great message for the youth to immolate in terms of hard work, perseverance, and faith which combines to make charisma a living embodiment. The proposed paper explores the comparative advantages of adherence to Iqbal s philosophy and the need to examine his work to break away from inertia.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 CLASH OF EAST AND WEST IN IQBAL S THOUGHT Mehmood-ul Hasan Rana Assistant Professor, NUML, Islamabad. mhhassan@numl.edu.pk Clash of East and West is one of the important issues in Iqbal s thoughts. Popular perception is that Iqbal criticizes various features of Western civilization in comparison with those of Eastern civilization. But thorough study of Iqbal s works reveals that Iqbal has very balanced and rational approach towards this issue. He has his reservations and observation on the concepts of Western civilization about nationalism, political exploitation, education system, family system and dominance of technology on human behaviors. On the other hand he praises advancement of knowledge in the West and other positive features. This article attempts to analysis Iqbal s views in this contest. 12

Abstracts of the Papers CHALLENGES OF HUMANITY IN THE LIGHT OF IQBAL'S THOUGHT CRASH OF EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION Muhammad Numan Chishti System Analyst, Iqbal Academy Pakistan The current European Civilization (EC) gained the renaissance from Muslim civilization (Muslim conquest of the Maghreb). However, due to corporate culture, it is going towards the crash. This was predicted by Allama Iqbal in his Ghazal March, 2927 written at the end of his studies in the West. The study of Allama Iqbal s Ilmul Iqtesad or Political Economy as well as his article published in The Liverpool Post, 2931, it can be safely said that Allama Iqbal was very much clear about The Crash of European Civilization (CEC). Some sociologists think that immigration and extremism are reasons of this forthcoming crash. However, the author is of the view that the only reason is corporate culture as described by Allama Iqbal. History of Europe (Continent) shows us the crash of a number of civilizations like Ancient Greek and Romans, etc. Once again, it is time of CEC. This paper will cover the brief history of ancient EC, EC during AllamaIqbal s stay in Europe ( ), the books he studied on the subject, how the idea of CEC was conceived in his mind, and a study how the modern European civilization is crashing, particularly in post BerExit scenario. This paper will also discuss the challenges to the humanity due to CEC and possible solutions for us in the light of Allama Iqbal s thought.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 IQBAL AND THE DIALOGUE OF THE CIVILIZATIONS Muhammad Ejaz-Ul-Haq Ejaz Ph.D Scholar, Chairman, Iqbal Research Institute, Lahore. The concept of The Dialogue of the Civilizations is of great importance in the context of the prophecy of the clash of civilizations made by Samuel P Huntington in his book entitled The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World Order. Iqbal favours a mode of civilized dialogue which respects diversity of faiths and peaceful co-existence in the era of globalization. In Iqbal we can see very clearly the manifestation of the modes by which this dialogue should take place in the context of religious and cultural diversity. Iqbal s views are based on the teachings of the Holy Quran which calls for tolerance and equality. He is against all types of violence and animosity arising out of differences of culture, religion, ethnicity, language, creed and territory. So he favours Dialogue of Civilizations rather than Clash of Civilizations to preserve peace and harmony at a universal level. It is a misconception that he altogether rejects the western culture. As a matter of fact he proposes a universal values system based on the teachings of Islam. He admires many western cultural norms such as quest for knowledge and scientific inquiry. In his poetry, lectures and letters he views with admiration western thinkers and philosophers such as Goethe, Henry Bergson, Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Nietzsche, William James, James Ward and many others. By accepting many philosophical concepts of these thinkers, he enters into a dialogue with the West, but this dialogue is a two way dialogue based on equal standing. 11

Every Civilization possesses particular system of values and ideas. Iqbal deides evolutionary process of human civilization into various eras of class distinction; social class era, religious era, imperialistic era, era of ideological, political or trade warfare, owing to its system of cultural value, Iqbal considers, Islamic civilization as saviour of humanity, because any civilization which does not subdue its system of values to higher ideals cannot survive for Long. Iqbal ascribes the fall of Muslim civilization to inaction and moral decline of Muslims. Nations acquire their character from their ideologies and action. Iqbal approves those moral values which are derived from the powerful passion of freedom and disapprove those moral ideals which are outcome of weak, captivated/slavish mindset. For him, freedom, equality, Justice and brotherhood are those moral values which form the essence of Islamic civilization. Other civilizations come in conflict with Islamic civilization for their want of compassion for instinctive freedom and human equality.islamic civilization stands out among other civilizations for its system of Justice, brother hood and equality. Iqbal considers the clash of East and west an essential outcome of clash of values. 42 National Iqbal Conference, 2018 IQBAL S PHILOSOPHY AND THE CHALLENGES OF THE CHANGING WORLD Syed Irtaza Hassan Kazmi PhD Scholar (Engineer) SALU Khairpur. hassan @yahoo.com The first creative effort by Iqbal was a book on the topic of Economics in which he declared financial independence foremost important thing. According to Iqbal economy mould the visible and unseen powers of the people of any nation. Other than this, Iqbal always loved to adopt the theme of individual and collective struggle to find the truth according to the social and cultural changes and challenges. Iqbal qualifies nature and history as the best teachers who lashes the world and moulds and carves innovation. According to Iqbal the most important need of the current uncertain world is to hold strongly to the Islamic identity and strengthen it as the nations which are devoid of faith and mysticism have failed to exhibit the workable model of respecting humanity and human unity. 11

Abstracts of the Papers MODERN ERA PROBLEMS AND THOUGHT OF IQBAL Javed Iqbal Meo Ph.D Scholar, GC.University Lahore. According to Iqbal wrong mental nurturing is gigantic and more serious mistake than the wrong political progress. A nation goes down when a nation ignore aims, culture and civilization, moral and cultural values, and religious ethics. Iqbal says a nation can progress on the basis of broad vision. Iqbal always compare broad vision and intellectualism in terms of Quran education. It is also a fact only those nations can be destroyed who made the foundation of their thinking, vision, progress and prosperity only on their religion. A nation can t be demolished who remain determined positivelys on their religious values. History has evidenced that only those nations can t survive who failed in to follow the strong practicality of their deep thinking and vision. The demand of Iqbal s opinions, thoughts, revolutionary thinking has increased in the modern age. We can improve and save our integrity through Iqbal s broad vision in present and in advanced age as well.

National Iqbal Conference, 2018 NOTION OF ART AND ITS INCULCATION IN SOCIETY - A CONTEMPORARY STUDY OF WORLD CHALLENGES AND IQBAL S THOUGHT Ahmed Umer Sohaib University of Lahore. iamsohaib22@gmail.com This research highlights the notion of arts elucidated by Iqbal in his book Fun or Falsafa and its challenges in contemporary world. The realms of philosophy as well as religion are fundamental aspects for the betterment of the society, however art is considered to be a secondary manner. The focal point of this research is hence to pin point Iqbal s notion of arts and its importance in society. For the purpose of analysis the research will peek into Iqbal s notion of religion, philosophy and arts not just intensively but extensively as well. Iqbal after evaluating the western literature discusses the ideas of Hegel, Coleridge and Leo Tolstoy. The idea of arts as portrayed by the mentioned philosophers also syncs with Iqbal s idea of peace through arts. By understanding his philosophy, the research emphasizes on making the art an essential part of the society. The research would then be two folded i.e. in the age of information and technology, the importance of arts in making peaceful minds, while on the other hand it would evaluate how arts could be implanted in the contemporary times as a dire need of society. 11

Abstracts of the Papers ALLAMA IQBAL S CONCEPT OF STATE Tanveer Ahmad Zargar Ph.D Scholar, University of Kashmir. tanveerzargar74@gmail.com Iqbal ranks as one of the greatest political thinkers who have sponsored revolutions in the domains of thought and culture. His contribution to political philosophy and science are valuable in as much as he revitalized the decaying civilization of the Muslims of India and raised them to a higher pedestal of vision and culture. Iqbal s most significant contribution to the contemporary political thought was made in his presidential address to the All India Muslim League in 1930 at Allahabad. It is here that he propounds the Muslim philosophy of state and suggests in its light the solution to the communal problem of the sub-continent. It was this suggestion to divide India on Ideological grounds that flowered into Pakistan. Iqbal s vision of a Muslim State or states was organically associated with implementation of Islamic Law and Islamic Sharia subjected to modern interpretations and Ijtihad. This paper intends to examine Dr Iqbal s concept of state, it s bases and purpose. The methodology will be qualitative in nature and both primary and secondary sources will be used and examined.

It is not spiritually live because it is much more materialistic. This fact unlocks the secret that moral values are replaced by physical and materialistic values which gains nothing. So there is a need of the hour that it must be criticized openly. Iqbal also gave much importance to Ijtihad. Transformations of eras and civilization new productive styles and ways will also be introduced. All these discussions are related to Ijtihad. Iqbal gave extravagant meaning of ijtihad. Iqbal writes in Reconstruction of religious thoughts in Islam that Human civilizations are changing gradually.in Tehzeeb-e-Hazar Iqbal gave his outlook on western civilization. According to him both civilization has contradictory role for each other. Iqbal connects western ideology to the ideology of Iblees.
