NOOR UL ISLAM PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter 24th December th Rabi-al-Awwal 1437 The journey continues! As Salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh PARENTS PLEASE NOTE School is closed for the winter break from Friday 25th December to Monday 4th January. Pupils should be back to school on Tuesday 5th January 2015 at 8.20am. As we reach the end of 2015 it is a time for reflection for all at the school. The school has made major strides forward over the past year, nevertheless there are many more hurdles to jump as we progress over the next few months. One key element of what makes this school special is the time and effort so many put into the school. This effort is not always noticeable, as many don t seek recognition. However as is mentioned in a hadeeth, Whosoever does not thank the people, does not thank Allah. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my staff for their hard work and dedication to the school. In particular, the governors, although the recent OFSTED report sounded particularly negative, I can vouch for their dedication, hard work and commitment to moving the school forward. There will always be room for improvement and everyone at the school is committed to meeting the challenge head on, we will neither become despondent or overjoyed as a Muslim should always be balanced in his/her response. With the whole school community working together, giving each other advice and support, I am confident we will see the results of our hard work validated. We ask Allah, the Most Gracious to accept all our efforts. Finally, I would like to finish with a fond farewell to Ms. Aisha. She has been a stalwart of the school community almost from its inception, dedicating a large part of her life to supporting the school community. I pray that Allah accepts all her efforts and blesses her retirement with good deeds and many happy days. Ameen. Majid Ishaque Headteacher Anti-Bullying Week: Anti-bullying week is held every year in November. This year, Anti-bullying week was between 16th and 20th of November and the national theme this year was Make a Noise about Bullying. In recognition, we had a whole school assembly where Ust Shahzaman, the school anti-bullying co-ordinator focused on the behaviour expected of all at the school, communicating clearly that bullying of all types, has no place in our school. As a school we wanted to promote interaction among all people in our community. Every class had the opportunity to explore ideas of appreciation, friendship, respect, kindness, forgiveness and helpfulness through PSHE lessons. Many children across the school created some wonderful posters and poems in recognition of Anti Bullying. There was also a focus on Cyberbullying and how this can affect children tremendously. The old bullying tactics of name calling, slander, lying, gossiping can be exacerbated with the use of the internet, whats app and other on-line software. Children will be working more closely on some of these topics during the World Internet Day in February and as a part of our work on E-safety. Keep an eye out for Jumuah notices where more details will be given. Remember that dealing with bullying does not start and stop with anti-bullying week or month but continues all year round! Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked the Messenger of Allah S.A.W: Who is the most excellent among the Muslims?" He said, "One from whose tongue and hands the other Muslims are secure." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Year 6 Prefects The Year 6 school prefects took over the school assembly on Friday 4th December Afzaa Sami (Assistant Head Prefect), Rabia Shaikh (Deputy Head Prefect) and Mohammed Seedat (Head Prefect) explained to the whole school the role and importance of being a prefect. Maashaa Allah, our three head prefects have taken the responsibility of leadership which has enabled them to gain the experience of heading a team and representing the school. The Year 6 prefects also introduced themselves during Friday s assembly. They explained their various roles and responsibilities to the school whilst reassuring the children that they are here to monitor the welfare of all the other students, listen to them and endeavour to treat everyone equally and solve problems fairly. School council elections We held our first ever 'Noor Ul Islam Election Day' for our School Council Elections. Our enthusiastic candidates delivered speeches to their classes, narrating their manifesto and expressing how they were suitable for the role. Cheerful tension coupled with the presence of a countdown to Election Day ensued! The children then filled in their ballot paper, noting down their chosen School Councillors. Year by year, children came out to post their ballot paper at our 'Polling Station' into their year's 'Ballot Box'. It was a busy Election Day, counting numerous votes, tallying them in until finally announcing the results in the assembly the next day. It wasn't long before they were in their first meeting with the Headteacher making serious demands! Watch out for the student council page in the next newsletter to find out what they achieved! Coding Club As part of the coding club at the school, pupils have been learning the basics of a computer from early Abacuses, Napiers Bones through to the modern PC. All as a prelude to the real coding! Year 4 s trip to the British Museum Year 4 went on a trip to The British Museum as part of their work in History on Romans. They had the opportunity to see Roman and Celtic artefacts as well as discover what Roman life might have been like in Britain at that time. Arabic club Children have been getting to grips with learning modern conversational Arabic through fun and interactive activities. All the pupils can now confidently speak about their family and themselves.

Year 1 Year 1 went on an adventurous trip to the Discovery Centre in Stratford. They had a chance to explore imaginary worlds and take part in story making, focusing on the key elements of characters, setting and plot. The children really enjoyed this and produced interesting stories about characters on a planet. Reception Reception children have really enjoyed learning about people who help us this term! A huge thank you to those parents and visitors involved, Reception were delighted to meet real life paramedics, opticians and Royal Mail postal workers as well as key stage 2 teachers! Parents watch out for a special delivery in the post! Year 2 Year 2 have been working very hard this term in our new curricular subject- Creative Arts. They have been very engaged in creating interesting freeze frames. The children have been exploring the powerful use of freeze frames in plays and scenes to make their play more dramatic. Year 5 s trip to the Greater London Assembly. On Tuesday 24 th November, Year 5 had the exciting opportunity to visit the Mayor s office. They learnt lots of interesting facts about London through enjoyable activities. Year 5 were also given the challenge to find various locations on a birds eye view of London. Mashallah they were successful and were given a prize of an Olympic baton to take back to the school. Not everyone gets the chance to meet the Mayor as he is very busy, but year 5 were in for a surprise when they bumped into the Mayor in the cafeteria before they left. Unfortunately they weren't given the chance to quiz him on any of his policies as they didn't want to disturb his lunch!

A communication group has been set up by a professional speech therapist. This has already been very successful and the positive outcomes are beginning to be seen. There have also been some additional resources in the form of specialist software to help identify the needs of pupils struggling with Maths. The software allows teach- Year 3 s visit Lee Valley Park Year 3 s went on a trip to Lee Valley Regional Park. We attended an Art of Nature workshop. We explored the park; collecting objects that consisted of various patterns such as leaves, acorns and flowers. The walk was soothing with occasional hiccups of excitement, especially when sighting a rabbit hopping about on the loose and a large wooden boat just waiting for our year 3 s to jump on board! From sighting a beautiful lake with ducks and seagulls to seeing a frog swamp fostered by algae, our walk was sensational. We then returned back to the workshop to create our masterpieces made out of all that we had collected. A tiring journey back to school, but the children had no regrets! It was better than Legoland! they yelled.

As-Salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakaatuh, May this message reach you in the best of health and Eeman, This message is written with great sadness, as it is time for me to leave Noor Ul Islam Primary School. After these wonderful 14 years I have spent at the school, sadly the time has finally come to bid farewell. Over the years I have been very fortunate to be involved with a number of activities and events. These have ensured that our pupils have been able to supplement their learning through educational trips and activities, both within and outside the school. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the school and as I move on, I will take fond memories with me. I feel it is tremendously important to encourage a positive learning and working environment, striving for the success and achievement of the school. Over the 14 years I have seen tremendous changes and I am grateful to have been able to be part of an incredible journey. Farewell to Mrs Aisha We would like to take this opportunity to also thank Mrs Aisha for all her hard work dedication to Noor Ul Islam Primary School over the past 14 years.
