2 THE ARBA EEN OF ABAA ABDILLAH AL HUSAYN (pbuh) Four reasons of why we commemorate Arba een include: 1. The heavens wept over Imam Husayn (pbuh) for forty mornings, rising red and setting red Imam Muhamed al-baqir (pbuh) 2. The earth mourns the death of a believer for forty mornings. Rasulullah (pbuh) 3. Imam Hasan Al-Askery (pbuh) has said: The signs of a believer are five: Performing fifty-one rakats of salaa daily, Reciting Ziyara* of Arba'een of Imam Husayn (pbuh), Wearing a ring in the right hand, Placing the forehead on dust [during sajda], and Saying "Bismillah al-rahman al-rahim" aloud in salaa. Al-A'mal, p. 589, as stated [by Ibn Tawus] * Ziyara is derived from the word zawr which means to deflect or draw away from something. A ZAAIR moves away from everything but the one he wishes to visit. There is a total focus on the person one visits so much so that one becomes one or united either through a physical or spiritual and esoteric meeting. Page 2

4 ..If you live in far and distant lands and are unable to travel to visit the grave of Imam Husayn (pbuh), turn towards the direction of his grave, send greetings to him... Imam Baqir (pbuh) Ziyara Arbaeen was taught by Imam Ja fer Sadiq (pbuh) to his very prominent companion Safwan Jammal bin Mahram Kufi who has narrated many ahadith from both Imam Sadiq & Imam Kadhim (pbut) ( used to earn his livelihood by hiring out camels). 5 ب ZIYARA ARBAEEN This Ziyara is said to have been recommended by Imam Ja fer As-Sadiq (pbuh) to be recited on the day of Arbaeen. Salaams upon the wali of Allah & His friend. Salaams upon the close friend of Allah and His chosen one. Salaams upon the selected one of Allah and the son of His selected one. 6 يةى ب يةى يةى Salaams upon the prisoner of torment and the one who was killed in battle. O Allah! Indeed I bear witness that he is Your wali (loved one) and the son of Your wali. And Your selected one and the son of Your selected one who was successful with Your generosity. You honoured him with shahadat and gifted him with success. And selected for him the best of parents. 7 يةى يةى And a leader from the leaders. And a defender from defenders. And granted him the inheritance of the Prophets. And made him a proof over your creation from the successors (of the Prophet (pbuh)). 8 But one from them who was deceived by worldly desires. ب ق بد ت و از ر ع الد نب ت ي م ب ن غ تب And traded his destiny for the lowest and meanest. And sold his akhira (hereafter) for a trivial sum. ب تع ظ بيت ب ل ب رذ يلا ب ل د ب ن ى ش ىى ىا ي ت بيتلث م ين ا ب ل ب ك ي سى ت غ بط س ت دىى ي ف ب ه و اه ى And was conceited and returned to base (animal) desires. And he displeased You ا ب خ ط ك ا ب خ ط ن يب ك Messenger. and Your And acted as a wretched hypocrite. يم ا ط تع ب ن يع ت يدك ا به ال يشق ت يق ال ينف ت يقى Page 7

9 And carried the burden of sin to the fire. ح ة ا ى ب ل ب ز ا يرا ب ل ب ست ب و الن ت يرى يج ي ب ي However, he (Imam) strove steadily and patiently until his blood was spilt in Your obedience. And his family split apart. O Allah! Shower your la na and afflict them with a painful punishment. Salaams upon you! 10 Salaams upon you! O the son of the first of the successors (to the Prophet (pbuh)). I bear witness that indeed you are a trusted one of Allah and the son of a trusted one. You lived a blessed life, and departed praiseworthy, and died forsaken, a shaheed and one on whom injustice was done. 11 And punish those who killed you. And I bear witness that indeed you fulfilled your promise to Allah. يذب م ب ن ق ت ك ى م ع ا بشه د ا ن ك ف ب ت بيع هب يد ا يهلى And strived in His way يب ب ي ي تى ج ته بد ي ف ب certain. until you were ب ي ى ى ا ت ك ال ب قي So la na of Allah on ف ع ن اهل م ب ن ق ت ك ى you. those who killed And la na of Allah on those who did you injustice. And la na of Allah on the Umma who heard and rejoiced in it. ل ع ن اهل م ب ن ظ م ك ى ل ع ن اهل ا م ة س يع ب ت يضى ب تبي ي ى ى بيذ ليك ف Page 10

12 ية O Allah! Indeed I make you a witness that I am a wali (inclined) to he/she who loves him (Imam) and an enemy of he/she who is his (Imam s) enemy. I, my mother and father are at your disposal, O son of the Messenger of Allah! I bear witness that indeed you are a nur (enlightenment) from elevated origins. And tahir parentage. 13 يم And neither were you covered in the clothing of gloom. And I bear witness that indeed you are the pillar of deen. And a support for Muslims and refuge for the mu mineen. 14 your family are the representatives of taqwa. And the foremost in guidance and a firm rope. And proofs (of Allah) over all mankind. And I bear witness that indeed I have faith in you. And I am certain that you will return. 15 And my heart is at peace with your heart. And my affairs are in accordance with your orders. And my support is for you when you return with the permission of Allah. So I shall be with you, with you, not with your enemies. 17 DUA ADEELA This dua contains the principles of eiman. It is a dua that strengthens one s eiman and should be recited before going to sleep every day. It is recommended to recite the dua at the time of death. (I begin) In the name of Allah, the Kind, the Merciful. O Allah! 18 That there is no god but He, the Almighty, the All Wise. 19 And bear witness that angels and the people of wisdom, His ibaad, That indeed there is no god but He, Owner of liberality and favours, generosity and blessings. He was Almighty before the actuality of might and power were created, He was Wise before the conception of knowledge and reason was brought about. He was Absolute Authority even when there was no kingdom or possession. He is Glory under all circumstances. ل ب مي ز ب ل ب ح تن ت ع ل ج ي ب يع ا ب ل ب و ا يلى Page 19

21 His Supreme Existence is prior to the past, And He is Eternal without a beginning, He will remain beyond the end of everything, unperishable and without an end, He has no needs, in the beginning as well as in the end. He is able, free from dependence by Himself, whether inward, or outward. There is no injustice in His judgement, no unfairness in His management, no oppression in His ج ب ود ه ق ب ال بق ب ا ب ل ز ا يلى ب ق آئ ب ع ب د ال ب عب ان ى بتيق ت لى ي يف ب ا ز يل ب ن غ ب يى يد يم ل ز ال غ ي ن يف ا ب ل يل ا ب ل ي ي ى م ب ست غبن يف ال ب ت يط ين الظ ت يه ي ى ل ج ب ور يف ق يض تي ي ل م ب يف ب م يش تي ي ىى ل ظ بم يفب Page 20

22 يم administration. It is impossible to deny His Authority, or to escape His firm hold, or to avoid His punishment. His mercy overtakes His punishment If a person asks for anything from Him, unable to approach Him (correctly) on account of frustration and trouble, he/she is treated equally in the matter of fulfilment by an able asker. 23 has made it easy to avoid جتين ت يب يب ب ا ب that which is haram ه ا ب ل ب حظ ب و يرى And has not made obedience unmanageable but according to one s capability. Glory be to He! How Kind is He! Highest is His glory. Glory be to He! How wonderful are His gifts and certainly His favours are countless. He sent down Prophets to explain His justice clearly, ب ن ل ب م ىي ك ي يف الط تع ة اي لد ال بو ب يع الط تق يةى ب ح تن م ت ا ب ب ي ك م ا عبل ش تبن ى ب ح تن م ت ا ج ى ن ب ب س تن ى ا ع ب ظ م اي ب ع ث ا ب ل نب ى يب آء ىى لي يي ع بدل ى Page 22

24 ي ى appointed guides to make known His power and generosity, and put us among the umma of the Prophet, the closest friend of Allah, and the most excellent being, and the most pious, Muhammad, Allah s blessings and peace be on him and his progeny. 25 ي ى ي ى And in the Qur an, You revealed to him, And in his successor, appointed by Him on the day of Ghadeer, and identified in clear words This is Ali I bear witness that there are pious Aimma and righteous successors after the chosen messenger, From Ali, the one who overpowered the unbelievers. After him, his eldest son, Hasan bin Ali, ب ى ا نبز ل بيتل بق ب ا ين ال يذ ب ع ي ال يذى ن ص ي ب وم يص بيو ال بغ يديب ي ا ش تر بيق ب ولي ي ه ذ ا ب ع ي ي ايل ا بشه د ا ن ا ب ل يئم ة ا ب ل بب ار ا لب ف آء ا ب ل ب تر يل م بت ت يرى ب ع ب د ال ب و ب ن ع ي ي ق ت يمع ال ب ف ت ير يم يد يه يد ا ب ل يد يها ب ل س ن ب عب ببن ع ي يى Page 24

26 Thereafter, his brother Husayn, the grandson of Rasulullah, obedience to him being the pleasure of Allah, Then Ali, the a abid of Allah, then Muhammad Al-Baqir, then Ja fer As- Sadiq, then Musa Al-Kadhim, then Ali Ar-Ridha, then Muhammad At-Taqi, then Ali An-Naqi, then Hasan Al-Askariy, Then, the awaited saviour, the hujja, and the established successor, the one who is awaited, the one because of whom the ع ث م ا ى ب وه ال يسى ب ط الت تبي ي ل ب ض ت ي ا يهلا ب ل س ب ي ى ث م ال بع تبيد ع ي ي ىى ث م ال ب تقي م م د ث م الص ت يدق ج ع ب ف ى م ى ب و س ث م ث م ال بك ت يظم ال يض ت ع ي ي ث م الت ق ي ي ى م م د ث م الن ق ي ي ى ع ي ي ث م الز يكي ىالى ع بس ي ي ا ب ل س ن ى ج ة ا لب ف ال بق آ يئم ث م ا ب ل ا ب ل نبت ظ ا ب ل هب يدي ا ب ل ب ج Page 25

27 world exists, because of whose blessings all living creatures get their sustenance, because of whose presence, the heavens and earth stay stable, and through him Allah will fill the earth with equity and justice when it is run over with tyranny and oppression. And I bear witness that their words are a proof, To follow their example is obligatory, ال يذ الد نب ت يت ب ى بي ق آ يئ ي ب قي بو رى ر يزق ال بي ب م ين ي يتا ب ل ب رض بيو ج ب و يد يهث ب ت الس يمآء ى بي ي ي ب ى ل اهل ا ب ل ب رض ب سط ت ع بد ل ب ع ب د م ت قي م يئ ب ت ظ بم ت ج ب ور ا ا بشه د ا ن ا قبو ا ل ب م ج ة ا ب ى متيث ت ل ب مف ي ض ىة Page 26

28 To obey them is obligatory, To love them is necessary, (because it has been) pre ordained To follow their way is salvation, To oppose them is destruction They are the leaders of Janna, effective helpers on the day of Qiyama The best guides for humankind, Indeed the best of successors. ط تع ت ه ب م م بف ب ض ة م و د ت ب م ل يزم ة ىىم قب يض ة ى ا ب ليقبتيد آء بي يه ب مم نب يج ة م تل ف ت ه ب مم ب يدي ة ى ه ب م تد ا ا به ي ا ب ل ن ية ب ي ا ب ج عي ش ف ع آء ي ب و يمال يديب ينى ا يئم ة ا به ي ا ب ل ب ر ب يي ال ب قي ا فبض ا ب ل ب يض ي ب ي ى ا ب ل ب يص آءي يض ع ل Page 27

29 I bear witness that death is certain and questioning in the grave is the certain, And the raising of the dead is certain, and the decrees are certain, and the sirat is certain, and the balance is certain, And the accounting is certain, and the book (the Qur an) is the truth, and Janna is real, and Jahannam is real, And indeed there is no doubt in the hour of resurrection. ا بشه د ا ن ا ب ل بو ق م س ىآئ ة ال بق ب بي ق ى ال ب ع ث ق ى الن ش ب و ر ق ى ال يص اط ق ى ا ب لي ب ز ان ق ى ق ى ال ب ي ت ت ب ا ب ليس تب ق ىى ا ل ن ة ق ى الن تر ق ى ب ا ن الس تع ة ا تي ة ل ر ي ب في ب ه ت Page 28

30 Indeed Allah shall raise the dead from the graves. O Allah! I hope to receive Your favour, Your generosity and mercy I expect for entering Janna, For my conduct gives me no right for obtaining Your pleasure as I was not obedient, Except that I believe in Your Oneness, and Your Justice. 31 ب يم يم generosity; pardon me in the name of the Prophet and his progeny, Your beloved friends. You are the most Generous, the most Merciful O Allah! Send blessings on the best of Your creations, Muhammad and on his most pure progeny. There is no authority and no might except that of Allah, the most High, the Great O Allah! 32 Indeed I place my eiman and deen with You as a trust and You are the best of trustees We have been commanded to look after that which is entrusted to us, so give back (what I have placed in Your trust) at the time of my death Through Your rahma, O the most Merciful. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from alteration (of faith) at the time of death ب ه ذ ا ي ن اي ي نبا ب د ع ب ت ك ي قي ب ب ا نبت ى ب ىى ث ت يديب ي ن م ب ست ب ود عى ق بد ا م ب ت ن ت ي بي بف يظ ال بو د آ يئ ف د ه ى ع ي قب تى ض ب و ب م ب و ى ي ت بي ب ح تيك ي ت ا بر م ب ي ى ال ا ي حي ا ل ه م اي ينبا ع ب وذ بيك يمن يديب ية يعن ب د ا ب ل ب و ي ى ال بع يرى يع Page 31

33 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NUMBER 40 Whoever dedicates himself to Allah for forty days, will find springs of wisdom sprout out of his heart and flow on his tongue. Adam wept for Habil for forty nights Ikmal al-din, p.13. Regarding the flood of Nuh (pbuh) it is said: So for forty days water continued to pour from the heaven and to stream out from the earth. The duration of the promised meeting of Prophet Musa (pbuh) was completed in forty nights, and his people were delivered from their wanderings after forty years. And when We appointed a time of forty nights with Musa, then you took the calf (for a god) after him and you were unjust. 2:51 Rasulullah (pbuh) rose for service after forty years. Page 32

34 It is recommended that one who reaches forty years carries a staff, for the staff is a sign of a traveller. And when forty years are over, it is the time for journey, and the taking up of the staff signifies preparation for the journey of the hereafter and collecting oneself for departure. Safinat Al-Bihar, Vol. 1, p. 504, Ihya'Al-'Ulum, Vol. 3, p.25 When a man enters his fortieth year, it is said to him, "Now be careful, because (henceforth) you will not have any excuse.. 35 guidance is realized on completion of forty [steps] and in this respect results in worthiness for Janna. If one recites the Suratul Fatiha forty times on water and pours it on someone suffering from fever, God shall cure him. Rasulullah (pbuh) has said: For forty days and nights, Allah does not accept the prayers and fasts of someone who backbites a Muslim man or woman unless that person pardons him. When a believer dies and forty men from among the believers attend his funeral and say, "O God, we know nothing about him except goodness, and You know him better than we do." Allah says, "Your testimony suffices Me, and I forgive him what I know of things that you do not know. Al-Khisal, p.538, Al-Saduq Page 34

36 If someone brings forward forty believers and does dua, his dua is answered. 'Uddat Al-Da'i, p.128 Imam Ali (pbuh) has narrated from Rasulullah (pbuh): "One who preserves for the sake of my umma forty ahadith relating to their religious needs shall be raised by Allah as a learned scholar on the Day of Resurrection. Maturity of a human being at 40 And We have enjoined on man doing of good to his parents; with trouble did his mother bear him and with trouble did she bring him forth; and the bearing of him and the weaning of him was thirty months; until when he attains his maturity and reaches forty years, he says: My Lord! grant me that I may give thanks for Your favor which You hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do good which pleases You and do good to me in respect of my offspring; surely I turn to You, and surely I am of those who submit.
