(to bow to Nabi Adam (A)) Who did not listen to Allah? (Iblees or Shaytaan) Why did Iblees think he was better than Nabi Adam (A)? (Because he was made of fire and Nabi Adam was made of clay.) What did Shaytaan want? (For others to bow to him) If Shaytaan had asked Allah for forgiveness, do you think Allah would have forgiven him? (YES, because Allah is Most Merciful, but Shaytaan was too proud) At this time, you can do the WORKSHEET in the TASK BAR.

STORYTIME: PROPHET ADAM (A) Long long ago, there was no earth, no sky, no sun or moon. Then Allah decided to make a beautiful world. Allah just said, Be! and He created the earth and the sky, the bright sun, the shining moon, twinkling stars, the tall mountains, and big oceans and seas. Allah made the earth go around the Sun in circles so that there would be day and night and many different seasons, too. Allah made the clouds and caused rain to fall and grass to grow. Soon, the earth was full of lovely flowers roses, tulips, pansies, daisies, lupins, and tall trees. Allah created all the animals and birds and insects; from the little black ant and the busy bees to the big eagles that fly high above, and from the tiny goldfish to the big whale, and also the elephants, lions, tigers, hippos, zebras, tall giraffes, fluffy rabbits, squirrels, horses, cows, goats, sheep, bears and all the wonderful creatures that you know of Allah made them all. Look at all the juicy fruits in the market: oranges, sweet grapes, soft bananas, pears, pineapples, mangoes, cherries, and crunchy apples. Where did all of these fruits come from? Allah made them all grow on trees. Allah also made all the vegetables we love to eat: corn, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, peas and all the other yummy foods we eat. Thank you Allah for making such a wonderful world! 82

You and I too are the children of Prophet Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwa (A).

Before Allah created Nabi Adam (A), Allah had already created many, many angels who were always worshipping Him and obeying Him. Amongst them, there was a different type of creature a jinn who was made out of fire and was called Azaazeel. Azaazeel worshipped Allah a lot and always hoped that Allah would make him a prophet one day. Then, Allah decided to make a When Allah created Nabi Adam (A) human being. 11 He promised by Allah s Name that, if they eat from the tree they will never grow old and will never die, and that way, they could worship Allah forever. Nabi Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwaa (A) had never heard anyone swear in Allah s Name or tell a lie. So, they ate from the forbidden tree. Now Allah told Nabi Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwaa (A) that they must leave the beautiful garden because they ate from the tree they were told not to eat from. Instead, they would now have to live on the earth and work hard themselves to grow their own food and make their own house. Allah promised Nabi Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwaa (A) that He would always look after them and all human beings who are their children. Whenever human beings would forget Allah, Allah would send another Nabi to remind them of Allah and warn them about Iblees. And whenever human beings make a mistake, if they say sorry to Allah, then Allah promised to forgive them. Allah also promised Prophet Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwa (A) that any human being who does his or her best to obey Allah, will one day go to Heaven after they die and live there happily forever and ever. Shaytaan now decided to follow Prophet Adam (A) and Sayyida Hawwa (A) and all their children wherever they lived on the earth. Allah told every Prophet to warn people that Shaytaan is our enemy and we should never listen to him. Whenever Iblees gets a chance, he still tries to whisper bad ideas to human beings and tells them to disobey Allah. Iblees tells us to lie, skip prayers, be rude, and not to listen to our parents.

However, we are Muslims; we love Allah and we follow what Prophet Muhammad (S) and his family, the Ahlul Bayt (A), have taught us. We follow the Quran, and we never listen to Iblees. Instead, we pray, speak the truth, and listen to our parents. One day, InshaAllah we will all go to Heaven, and Iblees will be punished.

WORKSHEET 1.1 Draw some of the beautiful things that Allah created in this world. 6

WORKSHEET 4.1 Put the events from the story in order by numbering the boxes from 1 to 4. Allah told Prophet Adam and Sayyida Hawwaa not to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree. One day, Shaytaan will go to the fire along with all the bad people who listen to him. Allah created the earth and all of the beautiful things in it. Allah created Prophet Adam (A) and made him the first Prophet.

PROPHET DAWOOD (A) TASK BAR READING STUDENTS CAN TURN TO THE NABI DAWOOD READING PAGE AND FOLLOW ALONG AS YOU READ TO THEM. WORKSHEET STUDENTS WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STORY. In this lesson, students will learn about Prophet Dawood (A). SAY: We have learned about a few Nabis now. Can you tell me about some of them? Wait for ideas. Have students mention the name of the Nabis that they have already learned about and something about them. SAY: Good! We are going to learn about another Nabi today whose name is Dawood (A). Does anyone know anything about Nabi Dawood (A)? Wait for ideas. SAY: Let s read about Nabi Dawood (A). I will read and I want you to listen very carefully. Students can now turn to the READING that is located in their book; please refer to the TASK BAR for reference. Then read to the students or have one student read while others follow along, pausing wherever necessary to ask clarifying questions. When you are done reading, you can continue here. SAY: What did you learn about Nabi Dawood (A)? Wait for ideas. SAY: Good! We learned from Nabi Dawood (A) that, with Allah s help, nothing is impossible. The people of Taloot didn t think that Taloot would be a good king because he was poor, but Allah shows them that money and wealth cannot compare to strong faith. Taloot was a wise man who had faith in Allah, which is why his people were blessed with the presence of Nabi Dawood (A) in their army who, with the grace of Allah, was able to defeat Jaloot! As a wrap-up, students can complete the WORKSHEET located in the TASK BAR. T4

STORYTIME: PROPHET DAWOOD (A) The Bani Israa il, who had been brought out of Egypt by Prophet Musa (A), had settled in the land of Palestine. However, they were constantly at war against their enemies, who finally managed to throw them out of their homes. They spent many sad years away from home before they went to Nabi Samuel (A) and asked him to name a strong king for them so that they could get their land back. On the command of Allah, Nabi Samuel (A) chose Taloot (Saul) as their king. The Bani Israa il protested at this choice saying that Taloot was a poor and unknown man. However, Prophet Samuel (A) told them that Taloot has b e e n c h o s e n b e c a u s e o f h i s knowledge, wisdom, and strength and that he would lead them to victory. The enemy was led by a fearsome commander, a huge man by the name of Jaloot (Goliath). The sight of Jaloot frightened the Bani Israa il and no one dared to fight him. Nabi Dawood (A) was present in the army of Taloot. He was too young to fight; his job was to help his three older brothers, who were soldiers, and to bring news of the war back to their father. When Taloot saw that Jaloot had frightened his army, he promised great rewards to the man who killed Jaloot. Nabi Dawood (A), who had never fought a duel before, approached Taloot and said, I am fit to fight this

devil because I have killed a tiger and a bear that attacked my father s sheep. He challenged Jaloot, but before Jaloot could react to his challenge, Nabi Dawood (A) had shot a stone from his sling shot. The stone struck Jaloot s forehead with a great force and knocked him to the ground. The brave words of Nabi Dawood (A) touched Taloot, who dressed him in a coat of armor and warned him to be careful. Before Nabi Dawood (A) approached Jaloot, he removed the heavy armor, because it was too difficult to move in. He stood in front of the enemy, with only a sling shot and the stick he used to guide his sheep. Nabi Dawood (A) then took Jaloot s heavy sword and killed him. When the Palestinians saw their champion being killed, they ran away. Taloot made Nabi Dawood (A) the commander in chief. After Taloot s death, Nabi Dawood (A) became the king. Nabi Dawood (A) was given many blessings and miracles by Allah.

He was given the Holy book, Zabur (Psalms). He was also gifted with a beautiful voice; when he used to praise Allah, the mountains and birds would also join him. Iron used to melt like wax in his hands. He used to design battle armor made of iron. The Holy Quran says: Indeed We granted Dawood a favor, saying, "O Mountains! Sing the praise of Allah along with him, and O Birds!, you too." And We made iron soft for him.!!!! (Surah Saba, Verse 10) Nabi Dawood (A) was a king for many years, and, after him, his youngest son Nabi Sulaiman (A) became king.

LESSON 3: PROPHET YUNUS (A) TASK BAR READING STUDENTS CAN TURN TO THE PROPHET YUNUS (A) READING PAGE AND FOLLOW ALONG AS YOU READ TO THEM. ACTIVITY MAKE A WHALE USING A RECYCLED MILK CARTON OR BOTTLE. FILL IT WITH WATER. TAKE A SMALL ACTION FIGURE AND PUT SOMETHING HEAVY, SUCH AS PUTTY, AROUND ITS FEET TO WEIGH IT DOWN. HAVE THE CHILDREN RECITE A CONTINUOUS TASBIH OF ISTIGHFAAR AND TAKE TURNS TO POUR THE WATER FROM THE WHALE INTO A BUCKET UNTIL THE ACTION FIGURE COMES OUT (IT WILL TAKE A FEW POURS). FINALLY, WHEN THE FIGURE COMES OUT, TELL THEM THAT ALLAH (SWT) LISTENED TO PROPHET YUNUS (A) WHEN HE REPENTED AND ACCEPTED HIS DUʿA, BUT IT TOOK MORE THAN ONE SORRY. WE SHOULD ALSO RECITE ISTIGHFAAR A LOT. In this lesson, students will learn about Prophet Yunus (A). SAY: We are going to learn more about another Prophet today whose name is Prophet Yunus (A). Does anyone know anything about Prophet Yunus (A)? Wait for ideas. SAY: Let s read about Prophet Yunus (A). I will read and I want you to listen very carefully. Students can now turn to the READING that is located in their book and in the TASK BAR for reference. Read the story to the students, pausing wherever necessary to ask clarifying questions. When you are done reading, you can continue here. SAY: What did you learn about Prophet Yunus (A)? Wait for ideas. SAY: Good. We learned from Prophet Yunus (A) that it is important to be patient and always try hard to guide people towards Allah. Even though people might not listen sometimes, we should be patient. Also, if we do something bad, we should ask Allah to forgive us. Let s do an activity to help us learn about forgiveness. At this time, you can do the ACTIVITY located in the TASK BAR, after which students can complete the COLORING activity. COLORING STUDENTS CAN COLOR THE PICTURES FROM THE STORY WHILE RECITING TASBIH YUNUSIYYA ( LA ILAHA ILLA ANT SUBHAANAKA INNI KUNTU MIN AD- DHAALIMNEEN - (THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH, GLORY BE TO HIM, SURELY I WAS FROM THE WRONGDOERS.) 21 READING: PROPHET YUNUS (A) A very long time ago, in the city of Nineveh, Allah sent a Prophet named Yunus (A) to guide the people there. The people of Nineveh were very rich and had everything they needed in life, so they refused to listen to Prophet Yunus (A). became very upset with them, so he left them and went out to the seashore, where ships sailed to far away lands. Prophet Yunus (A) boarded one of the ships and decided to go somewhere far away. He told them to only worship Allah and not to disobey Allah, but they would n o t l i s t e n t o h i m. I n s t e a d o f worshipping Allah, they used to worship idols made of wood and clay. Finally, when they refused to change, Allah told Prophet Yunus (A) that He would send a punishment on the people of Nineveh. Prophet Yunus (A) warned his people about it, but they just laughed at him. Prophet Yunus (A) However, Allah did not want Prophet Yunus (A) to leave his people and go away. So, as soon as the ship reached the middle of the sea, there was a terrible storm. Strong winds blew and huge waves began hitting the ship. Everyone was afraid they would drown. Prophet Yunus (A) realized that the storm was because Allah did not want him to leave Nineveh. So, he told the people in the ship to throw him into the sea so that the storm would pass

and they would be saved. At first, the people refused, but finally they were so scared of the storm that they agreed. So, Prophet Yunus (A) was tossed into the raging sea. As soon as he fell into the sea, a big whale came up and swallowed Prophet Yunus (A) alive. seashore and threw Prophet Yunus (A) out and left him on the beach. Whenever we are in trouble, we can also recite this tasbih and Allah will help us. (Can you memorize the Tasbih Yunusiyya?) Prophet Yunus (A) did not drown or die, but he was inside the belly of the fish! It was dark and lonely inside the fish. Prophet Yunus (A) began praying to Allah to save him. Day and night, he prayed to Allah saying, La Ilaha Illa Ant subhaanaka inni kuntu min addhaalimneen; There is no god but Allah, glory be to him, surely I was from the wrongdoers. Allah loved the tasbih of Prophet Yunus (A) very much. The big fish went near the In the meantime, while Prophet Yunus (A) was gone, the people of Nineveh saw some dark and black clouds coming towards them, and they knew it was the punishment that Allah had promised to send them. They were all scared and decided to say sorry to Allah and to ask Him to forgive them. So, all the men, women, and children went out of their homes and gathered together under the open sky and b e g a n p r a y i n g t o A l l a h. Astaghfirullaha Rabbi wa atubu ilayh! they cried out, asking Allah for forgiveness.

Allah is very kind and loving. Because the people were really sorry, Allah forgave them. The black clouds went away, and the people were very happy. Soon after, they became very sad because Prophet Yunus (A) had left them. When Prophet Yunus (A) came out of the belly of the fish, he was very tired, weak, and sick, so he just sat on the beach helplessly. Allah made a tree grow near him that gave him shade and some delicious fruits to make him strong and healthy again. Yunus (A), they could not believe their eyes. They were so happy! Prophet Yunus (A) told them about his miracle and how a big fish had swallowed him and how Allah saved him. And the people told Prophet Yunus (A) how Allah had saved them from punishment because they had asked Him for forgiveness. They all thanked Allah for His kindness and His love. Thank you Allah! they all said. Finally Prophet Yunus (A) was strong enough to walk again and he decided to go back to Nineveh and to his people. When the people saw Prophet

From then on, they all listened to whatever Prophet Yunus (A) told them to do. They all believed in Allah and worshipped Him, and they decided never to disobey Allah again. We learn from the story of Prophet Yunus (A) and the people of Nineveh that we should never lose hope in Allah s mercy. Even if we are in the dark belly of a fish, under the sea, or we see black clouds of danger, if we ask Allah for help even at the last moment, He will always help us because He loves us very, very much!

STORYTIME Prophet Nuh (A) A long time ago, there was a group of people who worshipped idols. Idols are statues made out of wood or clay. So, Allah sent Prophet Nuh (A) to guide these people to the right path and teach them about Allah. Prophet Nuh (A) was a wise and patient man and tried to teach the people about Allah; he told them not to worship pieces of clay or wood, which they had made themselves as their gods. The people did not listen to him, and when he warned them to be afraid of Allah's punishment, they laughed at him. Prophet Nuh (A) did not give up and continued to teach the message of Allah to them for 950 years. But, as time passed, the people grew worse, and began to attack him with stones whenever he tried to talk to them. Finally, Prophet Nuh (A) complained to Allah about the people and asked Him to help. Allah accepted the prayer of Prophet Nuh (A) and ordered him to build a large boat, an ark, and also told him that there would be a great flood in which all the bad people would be drowned. Prophet Nuh (A) planted small trees and waited for them to grow up into strong trees. Then he cut them down and began to build the ark. It took him many years to complete the ark. During this time, the people began teasing him, saying that he had given up being a Prophet and had become a carpenter.

When the ark was ready, Allah told Prophet Nuh (A) to command his followers to go inside the ark and also to take one pair of each type of animal. Suddenly, it began to rain heavily and streams of water came out from the ground. Soon the land was covered with water and the ark began to float. His son, Kanaan, who was an unbeliever, refused to come with them. Prophet Nuh (A) saw his son, Kanaan, struggling in the water and tried once more to convince him to have faith and come into the ark. But Kanaan replied that he would go to the top of a mountain and be safe there. Prophet Nuh (A) warned him that there was no shelter from Allah's punishment, except in the ark. In the meantime, a huge wave came and swept Kanaan off forever. The ark floated for a long time while the whole land was flooded, so that nobody was left alive on it. Finally, the punishment of Allah was over and it stopped raining. The water level began to reduce (become less) and the ark came down on a mountain called Judi. Prophet Nuh (A) was commanded to come out of the ark with his followers and the animals. In this new land, they began their lives afresh under the blessings of Allah.

WORKSHEET 2.1 Color the picture and answer the questions below. How long did Prophet Nuh (A) try to convince and guide people to the truth? 32 READING: PROPHET IBRAHIM Prophet Ibrahim (A) was born at the time of the evil king, Numrood, who forced his people to worship idols as their gods. Idols are something that a person worships instead of Allah. An example of idols are small statues created by humans. A short while before Prophet Ibrahim (A) was born, Numrood was told that a special child would soon be born, who would stand against him and tell the people to stop worshipping idols. Numrood thus ordered that all new born babies should be examined carefully to see if they showed any special signs or miracles. mother brought him back home secretly. Prophet Ibrahim (A) believed in Allah and hated idols. He wanted to show the people how useless their idols were. He tried to tell people, but they wouldn t listen, so he came up with a plan. One day, everyone in the town, young and old, had left town to attend a special festival. Prophet Ibrahim (A) went to the main temple where all the important idols were kept. He took an axe and broke all the idols, except the largest one. He then put the axe in the hands of the largest, unbroken idol. To protect prophet Ibrahim (A) from Numrood's men, his mother hid baby Ibrahim (A) in a cave and returned to the town. By the miracle of Allah, milk would come from the fingers of Prophet Ibrahim (A) so that he didn t go hungry. Prophet Ibrahim (A) grew up outside of the town for 13 years before his

He has always hated our idols! understand how useless their idols were. He said, "Shame on you! How can you worship pieces of wood and stone? They do not know anything and can neither harm nor benefit you." Prophet Ibrahim (A) was brought to court for breaking the idols. When he was asked if he was guilty, he replied, "Why don t you ask the big idol who did it?" The people said, "Our idols do not talk or answer questions." Prophet Ibrahim (A) took this opportunity to make the people However, nobody was willing to listen to his words, and he was declared guilty. Numrood decided to burn Prophet Ibrahim (A) alive to please his idols. He ordered that wood be collected to make a huge fire. So much wood was brought that, when the fire was lit, no one could get close enough to throw Prophet Ibrahim (A) into it since it was so hot.

When Prophet Ibrahim (A) landed in the fire, though, he prayed to Allah to protect him. By Allah's command, the fire became cool and harmless, and Prophet Ibrahim (A) remained safe. Numrood decided to build a large catapult and Prophet Ibrahim (A) was flung into the fire using this catapult.

PROPHET MUSA (A) Prophet Musa (A) grew up strong and healthy in the land of Eqypt. When he was older, he left Egypt and went to Madyan where he married Safura, the daughter of Prophet Shuaib (A). After staying in Madyan for some years, he returned to Egypt. On their way to Egypt, in the severe winter night, Prophet Musa (A) and his wife lost their way. Suddenly, they saw a fire in the distance. Prophet Musa (A) told his wife to stay where she was and he went to the fire, thinking he would find some help and light his own fire. When he reached the fire, he saw that the flames were coming from a green tree, but there was no one there. Prophet Musa (A) looked around in surprise, when he suddenly heard a voice saying: "O Musa, I am your Lord!" The voice then asked him to throw his staff onto the ground. At once, it changed into a snake, scaring him. He was then commanded to lift the snake without fear, and when he did, it changed back into a stick. Next he was told to put his hand under his armpit. When he drew it out again, his hand glowed with a bright light, like the sun. The Divine voice said to him, "O Musa! These are two great signs of your Lord. Go back to Fir'aun and his people and invite them towards your Lord!"

Prophet Musa told the evil ruler of Egypt, Fir'aun, that he was a Messenger of Allah and that he was speaking the truth. He threw his staff on the ground and it changed into a snake. This miracle frightened Fir'aun, so he turned to his ministers for advice. They told him that Prophet Musa (A) was just a good magician and that their own magicians could easily perform such tricks. Fir'aun called all the great magicians to his court. When they were told what had to be done, they were not worried. They threw pieces of rope on the ground and these cords began to wiggle like snakes. But when Prophet Musa (A) threw his staff down, his serpent ate all the pieces of rope. The magicians immediately realized that this was no magic but a miracle, and they fell into sujood, saying, "We believe in the Lord of Musa. This made Fir'aun very angry, and he warned them that if they did not take back their words, they would be killed. They did not change their minds, and so, he killed them. Allah told Prophet Musa to warn Fir'aun that He would punish him and his people if they continued doing bad deeds and worshipping idols, but Fir'aun was too proud to listen to the warning. Soon, the crops started dying. The Nile River flooded their lands, and the people suffered with lice and illnesses. When all of this happened, Fir'aun s people rushed to Prophet Musa (A) asking him to pray for their relief and promising to follow his religion. But when they were cured and the situation improved, they returned to their idol worship. Prophet Musa (A) collected the people of Bani Israa'il, the name of his tribe in Egypt, and left for Palestine. Fir'aun

learned of their escape and followed them with a huge army. When the Bani Israa'il reached the Sea, they saw Fir'aun approaching and were sure they were going to be killed. However, Prophet Musa struck When Fir'aun saw the path, he entered the sea at the head of his army. But when he had reached the middle of the sea, the waters suddenly closed around him and his men. the waters of the sea with his staff and the waters parted, making a dry path. The people rushed through and crossed safely. In the final moments of his life, Fir'aun realized the Power and Greatness of Allah, but it was too late. Fir'aun and his people drowned under the deep sea. This is how Allah rescued the Bani Israa'il from Fir'aun. Prophet Musa (A) had promised the Bani Israa'il that, once they left Egypt, he would bring to them a Divine Book for their guidance. Prophet Musa (A) prayed to Allah for that Book. Allah told him to come to

Mount Sinai and stay there for forty nights. When Prophet Musa returned to his people from Mount Sinai, he brought back with him the Tawraah, with the Divine revelations written on tablets of stone. However, while he was away, a man called Samiri made a golden calf by collecting gold from the people. Then he sprinkled some dust into its mouth, which some say he had collected from under the feet of Angel Jibrael on the day that Fir'aun had drowned. So, the calf made a sound and the people began to worship it. This made Prophet Musa very angry, and he asked them if they too wanted to displease Allah like Fir'aun had. The people blamed Samiri for misguiding them and were sorry. Prophet Musa (A) then took the golden calf, melted it, and threw every trace of it in the sea.

PROPHET ISA (A) Prophet Isa s mother was a very pious woman named Hadhrat Maryam. He was born without a father, which was a miracle of Allah. When Prophet Isa was 30 years old, he received the order of Allah to start his mission and the Divine Book, Injeel, was revealed to him. He could per for m miracles like: - b r i n g i n g a d e a d person back to life -making a blind person see again -curing illnesses These miracles made some Jews believe in him, but most did not believe in him and some became his enemies. He chose 12 people from his followers and taught them from the Injeel, so that they could travel and teach others. The people who hated him tried to kill him. They gave Yahuda, one of his followers, 30 pieces of silver to tell them which house Prophet Isa (A) was supposed to be in. They wanted to nail him to a cross and kill him. At this time, Allah raised Prophet Isa (A) to the heavens to keep him safe. I n t h e m e a n t i m e, Yahuda went to Nabi Isa s (A) house but found it empty. While he was there, Allah changed Yahuda s f a c e t o l o o k l i k e Prophet Isa s (A). When he came out of the house to tell the enemies that the house w a s e m p t y, t h e y grabbed him and arrested him. Although he told them that he wasn t Prophet Isa (A), they wouldn t believe him, and he was crucified instead. Today, Jews and Christians believe that Prophet Isa (A) died on the cross, but it was really Yahuda! Our Holy Prophet (S) said: When our 12th Imam (A) reappears, Prophet Isa (A) will come down from the heavens and pray behind him.

LESSON 3: THE LAST PROPHET TASK BAR ACTIVITIES FOR THIS LESSON ARE LOCATED ON THE NEXT PAGE. In this lesson, students will learn more about the Last Prophet and his character. SAY: Today, we are going to learn about the last Prophet (S). Does anyone remember who this is? Wait for answers until Prophet Muhammad (S) is mentioned. SAY: Good. Prophet Muhammad (S) was the last Prophet. He was born in the city of Makkah, in the land of Hijaz, which today is part of the country known as Saudi Arabia. Raise your hand if you know where Saudi Arabia is or if you have ever been there? At this time, you can show students a map or a globe and show them where Saudi Arabia is in relation to where they live. SAY: Prophet Muhammad (S) was known for his very good manners. He was very honest and trustworthy. What does it mean to be honest and trustworthy? Wait for answers. SAY: A person who never tells a lie is honest. A lie is something that is not true. SAY: Prophet Muhammad (S) was very trustworthy, which means that people could trust him to keep their secrets and they could trust him with their things. He loved and followed all of Allah s orders. That is why we still follow him today. Our Prophet Muhammad (S) liked to go out into the mountains to think about Allah, His beautiful creation, and to pray to him. One day, when he was in the mountains, one of Allah s special angels, Angel Jibraeel came and gave him a message from God. Angel Jibraeel kept bringing messages to the Prophet for many years. The words sent by Allah were recorded in a book that Muslims should hold very dear to them. Does anyone remember what the name of this book is? Wait for answers. SAY: Yes, the Quran. The Quran is Allah s words and messages for us. The Quran was given (revealed) to the last Prophet Muhammad (S). Allah sent many Prophets. Does anyone remember how many? SAY: Yes, all 124,000 Prophets spread the word of Allah and taught people what is right and what is wrong. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad (S) is the last Prophet of Allah to be sent to the world. SAY: Prophet Muhammad (S) began teaching people. However, there were bad people who didn t want to listen to Allah, but he was still very nice and kind to them. Many people in Makkah and Medina became Muslim because of the Prophet s wonderful akhlaq. At this time, you can do the STORYTIME activity located in the TASK BAR. Discussion questions for the STORYTIME activity: 1. How do you think you would react if someone threw trash on you? 2. How do we learn from the Prophet to act? 3. Has there been a time that someone has treated you badly? 4. What are some ways we can be nice to people, even when they are mean to us? 5. What did the Prophet teach the old woman and how did he teach her? SAY: Prophet Muhammad and his friends also built many Masjids. One famous Masjid is called Masjid an-nabi or the Prophet s Masjid. When the Prophet Muhammad (S) died, he was buried at this Masjid. Do you want to visit this Masjid, and if so, why? Generate a small class discussion on why visiting Masjid an-nabi would be important. At this time, you can do the COLORING activity located in the TASK BAR. SAY: Whenever you hear the name of Prophet Muhammad (S) it is good to recite a Salawaat. Let s read a story about how much reward we will receive when we recite Salawaat. Read the story about Salawaat to the students as they look at the picture. Practice reciting Salawaats with them.

STORYTIME The Prophet and the Woman Who Threw Trash Prophet Muhammad (S) was a very kind person and he never got angry, even when people were very mean to him. There was one old woman who was very bad. She used to throw garbage on the Holy Prophet (S) whenever he passed by her house. Prophet Muhammad (S) had to pass her house every morning on the way to the Masjid and every single morning, this mean old woman used to throw her dirty trash on him. However, the Prophet did not get mad or angry with her. He continued to walk to the Masjid peacefully. One morning, on the way to the Masjid, as Prophet Muhammad (S) was passing the old woman s house, he didn t see or feel any trash being thrown on him. He stopped and asked the old woman s neighbor if she was all right, because she was not there to throw garbage on him. The neighbor told him that the old woman was sick in bed. So, Prophet Muhammad (S) went to see the old woman because it is good to visit people when they are sick and ask them if they need anything. When the old woman saw Prophet Muhammad (S), she thought he had come to yell at her and asked him, Why did you wait until I was sick to come and yell at me? Why didn t you come when I was well and strong?

Prophet Muhammad (S) told the old woman that he had not come to yell at her, but to visit her and look after her because she was not well. He said, Allah tells us to look after people who are sick. The old woman was so surprised that Prophet Muhammad (S) was so kind to her, even after she had been so mean to him. She realized what a good man Prophet Muhammad (S) was and decided from then on to listen to him and become a Muslim. 4

SAY: Does anyone remember what Maʿsoomeen means or who they are? Wait for answers. SAY: Good. Maʿsoomeen are those people who always listen to Allah and never do anything He doesn t like. The Maʿsoomeen include the Prophet Muhammad (S) and his Ahlul Bayt (A) or family. Who remembers how many Maʿsoomeen we are learning about? Wait for answers. SAY: Yes, we are learning about 14. Today we are going to learn about the first 5 of the Maʿsoomeen because they lived earlier when the Prophet (S) started sharing the message of Allah. The first 5 of the Maʿsoomeen are also known as the Ahlul Kisa or People of the Cloak. Can anyone guess why the first 5 may be called the Ahlul Kisa or People of the Cloak? What do you think a cloak has to do with these special people? Wait for ideas. SAY: We are going to read a story that will tell you who the first 5 people are and why they are called Ahlul Kisa. This is a real story, which means what happens in the story actually happened in real life, a long time ago. Please listen very carefully for the names of the 5 people. Please follow the directions for STORYTIME, located in the TASK BAR. After the STORYTIME, students can work on the COLORING and two WORKSHEETS in the TASK BAR. You can then do the PERFORMANCE.

STORYTIME The Story of the Cloak Once upon a time, long ago, in a home in Medina, something exciting happened in the home of Sayyida Fatimah (A). 12

Sayyida Fatimah (A) heard a knock at the door. She opened it and was delighted to see her father, Prophet Muhammad (S). He greeted her by saying, Salaamun Alaikum, and she replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam. However, her father wasn t feeling well, so Sayyida Fatimah (A), being a good daughter, asked Allah to help her father feel better. As he entered her home, he asked his daughter for a kisa, or a cloak, to cover himself with.

Sayyida Fatimah (A) gave her father the kisa and covered him with it. As she was covering him, she began to notice his face was shining bright like a full moon! After some time, Sayyida Fatimah s (A) son Imam Hasan (A) came in with such excitement and said, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Mother, what is that sweet smell? Is it my grandfather? She replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam. Yes, he is resting underneath the kisa.

Imam Hasan (A) then went to the kisa and greeted his grandfather, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Grandfather, can I come inside the kisa with you? His Grandfather replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam, my love, yes, please come under the kisa with me. Then, after a while, her other son Husain (A) came rushing into the room and exclaimed, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Mother, is that sweet perfume in the air my Grandfather? Sayyida Fatimah (A) replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam. Yes, he is under the kisa.

Imam Husain (A) then went to the kisa and said, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Grandfather, may I please come in? The Prophet (S) replied with kindness, Wa Alaikum Salaam. Yes, please come in. Soon after, the father of Imam Hasan (A) and Imam Husain (A), Imam Ali (A), walked over to his wife and said, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Daughter of the Prophet. I smell the sweetness of my cousin and brother, the Prophet of Allah. Sayyida Fatimah (A) replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam. Yes, you are right, Oh Leader of the Muslims. My Father is under the kisa with our two sons.

Imam Ali (A) walked over to the kisa and said, Salaamun Alaikum, Oh Prophet of Allah, may I come under the kisa? The Prophet (S) replied, Wa Alaikum Salaam. Yes, Oh leader after me, please come in. Sayyida Fatimah (A) looked over and saw that her two sons, husband, and father were all under the kisa. She then walked towards the kisa and asked her father, Oh my dear father, may I

come in, too? The Prophet of Allah replied, Yes, my daughter, please come in. As soon as she entered, her father held both ends of the kisa and raised his right hand towards the heavens and said the following Duʿa: "O Allah, these are the people of my family (Ahlul Bayt). They are very special to me. Whoever hurts them, hurts me too. Whoever makes them sad, makes me sad, too. I don t like those people who don t like them. I love those people who love them. I am the enemy of their enemies, and I am the friend of their friends. They are a part of me,

and I am a part of them. O Allah! Send Your most special blessings and gifts upon me and upon them. And remove all impurity from them and keep them thoroughly pure." In the heavens, the Almighty Allah said to his angels, "O My angels! I have created the sky, the big earth, the bright moon, the shining sun, the spinning planets, the flowing seas, and the sailing ships for the love of these Five people lying underneath the kisa." Angel Jibraeel asked, "O Allah! Who are those people under the kisa?" Allah answered, "They are Sayyida Fatimah, her father, her husband, and her two sons. They are the family of Prophet Muhammad who will tell people about my message. "O my Lord," Jibraeel asked, "Will You allow me to go down to earth to be the sixth person under the kisa?" Allah the Almighty said, "Yes, I allow you." Jibraeel went down and greeted them, "Salaamun Alaikum, O Allah s Messenger! The Most High (Allah) sends His special salaams to you, and says, By My Greatness, I promise that I have only created the beautiful sky, large earth, glowing moon, shining sun, spinning planets, flowing oceans, and sailing ships for your sake and for your love.

He also allowed me to join you (under this kisa). Will you, O Allah s Messenger, allow me? Allah s Messenger replied, "Wa Alaikum Salaam, O Angel Jibraeel. Yes, I allow you." So, Jibraeel joined them under the kisa. He said to the Prophet, "Allah has said that He wishes to keep away impurities from you, O Ahlul Bayt, and to purify you with a complete purification. " The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "I swear by Allah that whenever this story of the kisa is mentioned in a gathering of our believers and lovers, Allah will certainly pour His blessings and gifts down on them, and the Angels will surround them and ask for forgiveness for them until they leave that gathering.

STORYTIME The Generosity of Imam s Family Once, when Imam Hasan (A) and Imam Husain (A) were children, they both became sick. Their parents, Imam Ali (A) and Sayyida Fatimah (A) made a nadhr that they would fast for three days if their children became well. A Nadhr is a promise that you make to Allah to do something extra for His pleasure if your wish comes true. Both children felt better very soon. So, their parents decided to fast the next day to keep their nadhr. The young Imams (A) also decided to fast, along with their helper, Fidha. The next day, they fasted for a second time. Again, Sayyida Fatimah (A) made bread for their Iftaar. This time, as they were about to break their fast, an orphan knocked on their door asking for food. Although Sayyida Fatimah (A) and her family had not eaten for two days, they all happily gave their bread to the orphan and again slept without any food. On the first day of their fast, Sayyida Fatimah (A) prepared some bread for Iftaar (fast breaking). In the evening, they all prayed and then sat down to break their fast. Just as they were about to eat their bread, a poor man knocked at the door and asked for something to eat. They all gave their bread to the poor man, and broke their fast with only water.

On the third day of fasting, as they sat down to break their fast, a prisoner knocked at the door asking for food. Once again, without hesitating, they gave away their bread. At this time, Allah revealed a Surah from the Quran (Surah Ad-Dahr) to teach people about their generosity and sacrifice and show their excellent character. Moral: Always think of others before yourself. It is not how much you give but the intention with which you give. 4

The Maʿsoomeen are special people who always listen to Allah and never do anything against His wish and were chosen for His special gifts. All the Prophets, including Prophet Muhammad (S) and his family, the Ahlul Bayt, are Maʿsoomeen. Why do you think Allah wants us to know about the Maʿsoomeen? Wait for answers and ideas. SAY: Allah is so nice that He wanted to give us an example to teach us and show us how He expects us to behave. At this time, students can turn to the READING page in the TASK BAR. SAY: Maʿsoomeen means those who can, but do not commit any sin. A sin is a bad deed that Allah does not like. The Maʿsoomeen are people of the Ahlul Bayt that Allah talks about in the Quran in Surah al-ahzaab, Verse 33: Surely, Allah will wash away all sins (and uncleaniness) from, you, O Ahlul Bayt (people of the house), and purify you completely. This verse from the Quran was revealed during the event of the Cloak or Kisa, which we learned about last year. All the Prophets were Ma soom, but we are going to learn about 14 special Maʿsoomeen: Prophet Muhammad (S), Sayyida Fatimah (A), and the 12 Imams. We have to try our best to learn about them and their lives, so we can understand how to live our lives to be close to Allah! T29 7

FOURTEEN MAʿSOOMEEN The Maʿsoomeen = Those who can, but do not sin These are the people of the House (Ahlul Bayt) that Allah refers to in the Quran in Surah Al-Ahzaab, verse 33: "Surely, Allah will wash away all sins (and uncleanliness) from you, O Ahlul Bayt (people of the house), and purify you completely. (33:33) This Ayah was revealed when Sayyida Fatimah (A), her father, Prophet Muhammad (S), her husband, Imam Ali (A), and her two sons, Imam Hasan (A) and Imam Husain (A), were under the Kisa. In the Ayah, Allah tells us that the people of the house, and not just those under the blanket, are totally clean and Taahir, meaning all uncleanness is kept from them. Prophet Muhammad (S) + + Sayyida Fatimah (A) 12 Imams (A) = 14 Maʿsoomeen (A)

Chapter 1: Twelve Imams The 12 Imams came after our Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), as he was the last of the Prophets. Imam means leader. There are 12 Aimma. 82 PROPHET MUHAMMAD (S) Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah on the 17th of Rabiul Awwal. He was the son of Abdullah and Aminah. Sadly his father, Abdullah, died a few days before his birth. Aminah, the mother of the Holy Prophet (S) asked a lady called Haleema to take care of her son so that he could be brought up in the open and healthy country air. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) spent the first five years of his life with Haleema and then she returned him to his mother, Aminah. When he was about six years old, his mother took him to Medina for a few days. On their return

journey, she died. After that, his grandfather Abd al-muttalib took him into his care. Abd al-muttalib loved his grandchild very much and was very kind to him. However, he too, died after two years. After that, the Holy Prophet began to live with his Uncle, Abu Talib, and Aunt, Fatimah, daughter of Asad. They loved Muhammad (S) as if he was their own son. Abu Talib went on a business trip and he took his young nephew along with him. This way, he learnt a lot about trading. Prophet Muhammad, even as a young man, was very honest with people. The people, therefore, respected him very much and used to call him as- Sadiq (the truthful) and al-amin (the trustworthy). Prophet Muhammad (S) never worshipped idols and at times he would go in a cave at Mount Hira and think. The Prophet used to be hurt when he saw the people of Makkah fighting and cheating one another. One day, when he was in the cave, Angel Jibraeel (A) came down by Allah s command and told Prophet Muhammad that he has been chosen by Allah to become the Prophet and the Messenger, and to spread the religion of Islam. It was because of his kindness and honesty that a very rich lady called Khadija asked him to marry her. The Prophet agreed; they were married and lived together very happily.

He also told them of the Day of Judgment, when everyone will see his or her good and bad deeds from this world, and will be either rewarded or punished for them. Prophet Muhammad advised the people to stop idol-worshipping and other evil deeds and to worship only Allah. He told them it is only Allah who has made the heavens and the earth and is in charge of them. His first wife, Lady Khadija, and his cousin, Imam Ali (A), were the first to believe that he was a Prophet and to accept Islam. 4

Bibi Fatimah (a.s.) used to work very hard in her house. Her father, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), could see how hard she was working. One day, he gave her a Tasbeeh, and told her that after every Salaat she should say: 34 times Allahu Akber 33 times Al Hamdulillah 33 times Subhanallah Salaat is like a beautiful flower and the Tasbeeh of Bibi Fatimah (a.s.) gives that beautiful flower a beautiful smell. She was standing near the wall opposite the door of the Ka'ba, praying to Allah when suddenly there was a crack in the wall near her. The crack became bigger and bigger until it was big enough for Fatima binte Asad to go through it and enter the Ka'ba. When Fatima binte Asad had entered the Ka'ba, the crack began to get smaller and smaller. Prophet Muhammad (S) had been away when all this happened. The name came from Allah through Angel Jibrael. The Prophet said to Imam Ali (A): O Ali! You are to me as Haroon was to Musa. Prophet Haroon (A) had two sons called Shabber and Shabbir. In Arabic Shabbar is translated as Hasan Imam Hasan(as) was the first son of Imam Ali (as) and Syeda Fatimah (as).prophet Muhammad (saw) was very happy at his birth and did his Aqiqa by slaughtering a lamb and giving away silver to the poor. Imam Hasan (A) was the standard bearer in all these battles and played an important role in the victories. When his father Imam Ali (A) died, Imam Hasan(A) was 37 years old. He became the next Imam Courtesy of Imam Hasan (A) One day, Imam Hasan (A) saw an old man was performing Wudhu but his Wudhu was not right. Imam Hasan (A) wanted to make him aware of his mistake but he didn t want to break his heart or annoy him so that he didn t accept it. So he went along with Imam Hussein (A) and between the 2 brothers, they decided to create a scene and ask the old man to make the judgment. Imam Hasan (A) addressed Imam Hussein (A) and said, "I perform a better wudhu as compared to yours." Imam Hussein (A) said "I perform it better than you do." Both of them approached the old man and said, "You come and see our wudhu and decide who performs a better wudhu." Both of them got busy with performing ablution and ended it in a correct and nice way. The old man understood the secret of their act and realized that they meant him to find out his fault, in this way. 136 15.2 Imam Hussein (A) and the Holy Qur an: Abu Abdil Rahman Salmi was a Qur an teacher in Medina. Many children would come to him to learn how to recite the Holy Qur an. One day he taught a son of Imam Hussein (A) to recite Surah Al-Fatihah (Al- Hamd). When the child recited the Surah Al-Fatihah before his father, Imam Hussein (A) was so pleased that he rewarded the teacher with valuable gifts. Some people criticized this action saying it was not necessary to give so much in return for teaching one Surah. In reply, Imam Hussein (A) said, "What comparison can there be between the gift I have given to the teacher of my child, and his teaching the Holy Qur'an, the gift which he has given to my child?" Imam Hussein (A) gave a lot of importance to the Holy Qur'an during his life. During the night of Qadr, in the Holy month of Ramadhan, there is a specific Ziyaarah of Imam Hussein (A) which we recite. Imam of our time Imam Mahdi (A) in his Ziyaarah addresses Imam Hussein (A) saying: "You were for the Prophet, a son and for the Holy Qur'an, a support" Martyrdom: Yazid was a very evil man who changed everything that the prophet (saw) had taught.yazid wanted Imam Hussein (as) to follow him. Imam (as) refused to follow him, because he knew that if he did, true Islam would be forgotten. That made Yazid very angry.

Yazid sent a large army to Kerbala under the command of Ubaidullah ibne Ziyad and surrounded Imam Hussein (as), his family and a small army of 72 people. On the day of Ashura 61 A.H Imam Hussein (as) and his companions were martyred in Kerbala and are buried there.

4 Imam Zain ul Abideen (a) Name Title Kunyat Birth date Father Mother Death : Ali-ibn-ul Hussein (a) : Zain-ul Abideen (The jewel of worshippers) : Abu Muhammad : 15th Jamadi-ul-Awwal, at Medina : Hussein ibn Ali (a) : Syeda Shahr Bano (a), daughter of King Yazdigard II : 25 th Muharram 95 AH. Poisoned by Waleed bin Marwan Buried : Jannat-ul-Baqee, Medina. Imam (a) was the eldest son of Imam Hussein (a). His mother was the Persian princess Syeda Shahr Bano(a). He spent the first two years of his life under the care of his grandfather Imam Ali (a) and next 12 years under the guidance of his uncle Imam Hassan (a).he was present in Kerbala, where his father, relatives and the companions of his father were martyred by the forces of Yazid. At the time, he was too ill to fight and was thus protected by Allah to continue the line of Imamat. Imam (a) lived 34 years after his father and all his life was passed in prayers to Allah and in the remembrance of tragedy of Kerbala. His habit of frequent prostration in Sajdah caused him to be known as SAJJAD. He was also called ABID. At the time of our 4 th Imam, Imam Zainul Abideen (A) it was very difficult for Imam (A) to teach Islam to the people. This was because Yazid s men used to keep a close watch on Imam s (A) movements.

Imam Zainul Abideen (A) had seen his father, Imam Hussein (A), and other loyal friends and family die for the sake of Islam. Imam Zainul Abideen (A) decides that the best way to teach people about Islam was by prayers (Du a). As a result, we have today a beautiful collection of his Du a in a book called: Al- Sahifat al-kamilat al-sajjadiyyah - The complete book of Al-Sajjad, (Imam Zainul Abadeen (A) was also known as al-sajjad). An extract from a du a for Sunday (the 1 st verse) from AL- Sahifat al-kamilat al-sajjadiyya: In the name of Allah, the most Kind and the most Merciful. In the name of Allah from whom I hope for nothing but bounty, and from whom I fear nothing but justice! I rely only upon His word, and I cling only to His cord! Just in these few lines Imam (A) is teaching us so much: He is teaching us that only Allah is the provider. He is teaching us that we should not fear Allah as He is the most forgiving and the most Merciful but at the same time He is also the Most Just and it is this justice that we should fear. There was once a man who was a very religious man and because he was so sure of himself he always used to pray to Allah to judge him on Justice, (we are told always to pray to Allah to judge us with His mercy). When this man died he saw a scale that was being weighted down with all his good actions. The angels then brought an apple which they put on the other side of the scale and the scale came down on the side of the apple.

The man did not understand how a single apple could outdo all his good actions. He was then told that, that apple was one that he had tasted in the market without the permission of the shop owner. Because the man had insisted that Allah judge him on justice, Allah did not intervene with His mercy. Imam Zainul Abideen (A) then finished the 1 st verse with the lesson that we should only rely on Allah and attach ourselves to Him alone. Moral: 1. We should always ask Allah to judge us with His mercy. 2. We should try to read the du as from Al-Sahifat al-kamilat al-sajjadiyyah, as there is so much to learn from them.

LESSON 1: EID AL-GHADEER TASK BAR In this lesson, students will learn about Eid al-ghadeer. SAY: Does anyone know what Eid means? READING STUDENTS CAN TURN TO THE EID AL-GHADEER READING PAGE IN THEIR BOOK TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH THE TEACHER. Wait for answers. SAY: Eid means celebration or occasion. There are different Eids or celebrations in Islam. Can anyone name a time we have an Eid? Wait for student answers. Students may be able to recall Eid-ul-Fitr which occurs at the end of the month of Ramadan. WORKSHEET STUDENTS WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT EID AL-GHADEER. ART EXTENSION HAVE STUDENTS DRAW A PICTURE OF THE EVENT THAT OCCURRED AT GHADEER AL- KHUMM. SAY: Good. Today we are going to learn about another Eid, called Eid al-ghadeer. Does anyone want to guess what we might be celebrating on this Eid? Wait for answers. SAY: Good. This Eid has to do with honoring Allah s decision in appointing the first Imam. Do you remember what his name is? Wait for answers. At this time, students can turn to the READING, located in the TASK BAR. SAY: Good. The first Imam is Imam Ali (A). Let s read about Eid al-ghadeer. Now, read to the students or pick a couple of students to read, as the rest of the class listens. When you are done, ask the following clarifying questions to gauge student understanding of the text: 1. What is Ghadeer al-khumm? 2. After Salaah, what did the Prophet (S) do at Ghadeer al-khumm? 3. What were the 2 things the Prophet (S) said he was leaving behind and that all Muslims should give importance to? 4. Whom did the Prophet (S) name to be the leader after him? 5. What verse from the Quran did Allah send down after this event? SAY: Good. Eid al-ghadeer is a day when we celebrate and remember this event of how our first Imam, the successor of the Prophet, was appointed. This is a very special day. After the death of our Prophet (S), without our first Imam to help the Muslims follow the religion of Islam, no one would know what to do! Remember that the Imams are guides and helpers for the Muslims. At this time, students can complete the WORKSHEET and ART EXTENSION activities, located in the TASK BAR. T

READING: EID AL-GHADEER On the 18th of Dhul-hajj, Allah commanded Prophet Muhammad (S) to stop at a place called Ghadeer al-khumm (the pond of Khumm). A friend of the Prophet (S) called all the people to gather around. The Holy Prophet (S) led the Salaah. Then, he stood up high so that all the people could see him. He told everyone that, when he dies, he would leave behind two special things: The book of Allah, the Holy Quran The AHLUL BAYT (A) (his family) Sayyida Fatimah (A) & 12 Imams (A) The Prophet (S) explained that if the people follow BOTH the Quran AND the Ahlul Bayt, Allah will always be happy with them and they will be guided. But if the people follow only the Quran and don t listen to the Ahlul Bayt, then Allah will NOT be completely happy with them and they will not be truly guided. Prophet Muhammad (S) then held up Imam Ali s (A) hand, showing him to all the people and said:

Whoever considers the Prophet (S) as their leader, must also consider Imam Ali (A) as their leader. Then, he prayed to Allah to love those people who love Imam Ali (A) and dislike those who do not love him. Allah then said that the religion of Islam had been completed on that day. This day is known as Eid al-ghadeer. This is a day of celebration because our religion was completed on this day!

WORKSHEET 4.1 Write the meaning of the following hadith, then learn it. It means: Write the 2 things the Holy Prophet (S) said he was leaving behind

LESSON 2: EID AL-MUBAAHALA KEY WORDS EID MUBAAHALA GHADEER In this lesson, students will learn about Eid al-mubaahala SAY: In the last lesson, we learned about Eid al-ghadeer. Today, we are going to learn about another Eid, called Eid al-mubaahala. Does anyone know what we might be celebrating on this Eid? Wait for answers. At this time, students can turn to the STORYTIME activity located in the TASK BAR. SAY: Eid al-mubaahala has something to do with members of the Ahlul Bayt (A). These members are also called Ahlul Kisaa. Does anyone remember who they are? TASK BAR STORYTIME STUDENTS CAN FOLLOW ALONG WITH THEIR TEACHER BY TURNING TO THE MUBAAHALA READ- ING PAGE. WORKSHEET STUDENTS WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT MUBAAHALA. ART EXTENSION GIVE STUDENTS A POSTER PAPER AND HAVE THEM DRAW AND COLOR THE EVENT OF MUBAAHALA. FOR THE AHLUL BAYT (A), HAVE THEM WRITE IN NAMES AS OPPOSED TO DRAWING PICTURES OF THEM. Wait for answers. SAY: Good! They are the Prophet (S), Imam Ali (A), Sayyida Fatimah (A), Imam Hasan (A), and Imam Husain (A). Let us read about the event of Mubaahala and see the connection with the Ahlul Bayt (A). Now, read to the students or pick a couple of students to read, as the rest of the class listens. When you are done, ask the following clarifying questions to gauge student understanding of the text: 1.# Who wanted to meet the Prophet (S)? 2.# Why didn t the Prophet (S) speak to the guests when they arrived? 3.# What do the Christians believe about Prophet Isa (A) that is not true? 4.# What does Mubaahala mean? 5.# Who was with the Prophet (S) during the event of Mubaahala? SAY: Good! So we celebrate this day as Eid al-mubaahala because of the Prophet s (S) victory and we honor the special status that Allah has given the Ahlul Bayt (A). It was because of their nearness to Allah that the Christians backed out of the Mubaahala. At this time students can do the WORKSHEET and ART EXTENSION, located in the TASK BAR. T

STORYTIME: EID AL-MUBAAHALA When Islam was first introduced to the people, the Holy Prophet (S) had sent letters to many different countries inviting them to Islam. One letter was sent to the Christians of Najran. The Christians wanted to meet the Holy Prophet (S). When they arrived in Medina, the Holy Prophet (S) was sad to see them dressed in silk and gold, and he ignored them. Imam Ali (A) asked them to change into simple clothes, and the Holy Prophet (S) was then happy to see them. They talked, but the Christians would not listen to the Prophet (S). They believed that Prophet Isa (A) was the son of God, because he had no father. Allah sent down a verse as part of Surah Aal `Imran, saying that if they called Prophet Isa the son of God (as he has no father), then they should also call Prophet Adam (A) the same, because he was born without a father or mother. The Christians did not have an answer to this, but they still argued because they did not want to admit they were wrong. Allah ordered the Holy Prophet (S) to do "Mubaahala" with the Christians. Mubaahala means to pray against one another. It was something that the people of that time would do if they wanted to prove something to be correct or true. If two groups disagreed on something, they would invoke the curse of Allah to be upon the one that is wrong, and then the group that was correct would be made clear. This Mubaahala was ordered by Allah. Allah commanded the Prophet (S) to do Mubaahala with the Christians.

The next day, on the 24th of Dhul Hijjah, the Holy Prophet (S) came out for the Mubaahala with Imam Ali (A), Sayyida Fatimah (A), Imam Hasan (A), and Imam Husain (A). When the Christians saw the shining faces of the group, they began to tremble and shake. They backed away and realized that they had failed. We celebrate the Prophet s (S) victory on this day as Eid al- Mubaahala.

WORKSHEET 4.2 On what date did Mubaahala occur? Mubaahala occurred on: For the challenge of Mubaahala, the Holy Prophet (S) came out with the following people. Why were they special? Sayyida Fatimah (A) Imam Ali (A) Prophet Muhammad (S) Imam Hasan (A) Imam Husain (A)

Why Do We Remember Ashura? Ashura was the day when Islam was saved by Imam Husain (A). But why do we remember it every year? Why don t we simply remember it while reading about it in history books, or when we study it in school or Sunday school? It is important to remember what happened on Ashura because the Prophet (S) and the Imams before Imam Husain (A) remembered it, and the Imams who came after Imam Husain (A) remembered it as well. Being Muslims, we obey and follow the Prophet (S) and his family (A).

Here are some examples from history where the Prophet (S) and the Imams (A) remembered what happened in Karbala. Prophet Muhammad (S): One day, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) was in the house of Umm Salamah, his wife. Imam Husain (A), who was a child at that time, entered inside and rushed to the Prophet. Umm Salamah followed him and saw Imam Husain (A) lying down on the chest of the Prophet (S). The Prophet (S) was crying and turning something around in his hands. He said, "O Umm Salamah! Jibraeel has come to me and told me that my Husain (A) will be martyred. This piece of earth is from his place of martyrdom. Keep this with you, and on the day that this dirt turns into blood, you will know that Husain (A) has been martyred." Umm Salamah said, "O Prophet of Allah! Why don't you make Duʿa to Allah that Husain (A) will not have to be killed?" The Prophet replied, "O Umm Salamah, by dying, Imam Husain (A) will keep Islam alive and reach a very high status. The Shi as will increase in number, and Imam Mahdi (A) will be from his family. The love of Imam Husain (A) will be placed in the hearts of Shi as and will help them reach a very high level." Imam Ali (A): One day, Imam Ali (A) was on a journey with his companions, and they passed by the land of Karbala. There, they recited their Fajr prayers. Afterwards, Imam Ali (A) took a handful of dirt, smelled it, and said: "Peace be upon you, earth of Karbala! A group of people (who will be buried in you) will enter straight into heaven." 4

Imam Ali Ar Ridha (A): One day, someone named Rayyan, the son of Shabeeb, went to meet the 8th Imam, Imam Ali al-rida (A) on the first day of the month of Muharram. The Imam (A) told him: "O son of Shabeeb! Muharram is such an important month that even Arabs of the age of ignorance (jahiliyyah) respected its importance. They didn't allow fighting and blood-shed during this month. But these people, (the Umayyads, meaning Yazid s family), did not honor the importance of this month. In this month, they killed the g r a n d s o n o f t h e P ro p h e t a n d imprisoned t h e w o m e n i n h i s family after stealing their belongings. Allah will never forgive this crime." "O son of Shabeeb! If you want to cry for anyone or anything, cry for Imam Husain (A) because he was killed evilly. Eighteen people from his family were also killed with him. The heavens and the earth cried for Imam Husain (A). Four thousand angels came down from the heavens to help him, but when they arrived, they saw that he had already been martyred. O son of Shabeeb! My father (Imam Musa al Kadhim) told me that when my grandfather, Imam Husain (A), was martyred, the sky rained blood and the sand turned red." "O son of Shabeeb! If you cry over what happened to Imam Husain (A) so much that tears flow onto your cheeks, Allah will forgive all your sins. "O son of Shabeeb! If you want to earn the reward of those who were martyred along with Imam Husain (A) then, whenever you remember him, say, I wish I could have been with them, because then I too would have achieved the Great Victory (meaning I would have become a martyr as well). " Imam Zainul ʿAbideen (A): Imam Zainul ʿAbideen (A) used to cry a lot whenever he remembered Ashura. Sometimes, when he would hold a glass of water, he would cry so much that his tears would fall into his glass of water and it would become so

full of tears that he would not be able to drink that water. When people asked him why he cried so much, he said: "I am crying because of how they treated my family, especially the women and children. He would then gather the people around and tell them the story of Ashura and what happened to the prisoners after Karbala. People would also cry loudly. Sayyida Zainab (A) used to also hold majalis for women and tell them about what happened in Karbala. That s how the message of Karbala was spread and is still remembered after 1400 years.

ABBAS BIN ALI (A) Hadhrat Abbas (A) is the son of Imam Ali (A) and Ummul Baneen. Imam Ali (A) married Ummul Baneen after the death of Sayyida Fatimah (A). From his childhood, Hadhrat Abbas (A) loved his elder brother Imam Husain (A) very much. In Karbala, Hadhrat Abbas (A) held the flag of Imam Husain s (A) army. That is why he is also known as the Flag Bearer, the one who held the flag. He was also called Qamar Bani Hashim, which means the moon of Bani Hashim. Hadhrat Abbas was very handsome and brave and shined in his family, just like the moon shines in the dark night. Hadhrat Abbas (A) was also called Saaqqi, the Water Bearer, the one who gets water.

On the day of Ashura, Hadhrat Abbas (A) could not bear to see the thirst of his niece Sakina and other children of Ahlul Bayt. So, he asked for permission from the Imam (A) to bring some water. He took his mashk, or water bag, and went to the river. The enemies were very afraid of him, because they knew how brave he was. 1 2 Hadhrat Abbas filled his mashk with water and headed back towards the tents of the Ahlul Bayt. The enemies did not want him to take water to the tents, though. They followed him, throwing spears and arrows at him. His right arm was cut off, and then his left. Finally, an arrow pierced the water bag (maskh) and all the water spilled out of it. 3 4 Hadhrat Abbas (A) fell to the ground and called for Imam Husain (A). 5 4

So, he poured the water back into the river and did not drink any water.

SAYYIDA ZAINAB (A) Sayyida Zainab was the third child of Imam Ali (A) and Sayyida Fatimah (A). When Sayyida Zainab (A) was born, the Prophet (S) was on a trip. Sayyida Fatimah (A) asked her husband, Imam Ali (A), to choose a name for the baby. Imam Ali (A) replied, I could never make such an important decision before asking Rasulullah (S). We will wait until your father, the Prophet (S), returns. this great woman, because she is like Sayyida Khadija. Just like Khadija gave everything she owned--her money and her life--to serve Islam, Sayyida Zainab s strength in the way of Allah will help keep Islam alive. Because of Sayyida Zainab (A) and her great sacrifices in Karbala, you and I can now be true Muslims. When the Prophet (S) returned, they told him about the good news of the baby. Imam Ali (A) then asked him to choose a name for the baby. The Prophet (S) replied, the children of Fatimah (A) are like my children, but Allah must choose their names for them. Just then, Jibraeel came down from the heavens and said, Allah gives His salaams and says to name this child Zainab, which Allah has chosen for her and is written in His Holy Tablet. 241 HADHRAT ALI ASGHAR (A) Hadhrat Ali Asghar (A) Historians report that one of the saddest stories of Karbala was the death of a small 6-month-old baby. On the day of Ashura, one-by-one, Imam Husain (A) s friends and companions were martyred. Awn, Muhammad, Qasim, Abbas, and Ali Akbar went to the battlefield and were martyred. By the afternoon, Imam Husain (A) was left alone. The time had come for him to go to the battlefield. Imam Husain (A) said farewell to everyone. He rode his horse to a small hill and called out loudly: "IS THERE ANYONE TO HELP ME? IS THERE ANYONE TO HELP THE GRANDSON OF THE HOLY PROPHET?" By saying this, he was giving Yazid's men one last chance to change their minds and not fight against Imam Husain, but no one answered Husain s (A) question. Suddenly, Imam Husain (A) heard the sound of crying coming from his camp. He turned around and returned to his tents. "Zainab, I am still alive. Why are you crying?" "My brother Husain (A), when you asked, IS THERE ANYONE TO HELP ME? Ali Asghar answered that he was ready to help you by falling from his cradle." The Imam went to Ali Asghar s mother, Umme Rubab. Ali Asghar was on her lap. He was crying and Umme Rubab was trying to comfort him. Imam Husain picked up baby Ali Asghar and whispered something in his ear. Ali Asghar immediately stopped crying. He looked up at his father and smiled. 103

Imam Husain said, "Umme Rubab, I am taking Ali Asghar to the battlefield with me so that I can get some water for him." Imam Husain (A) carried Ali Asghar to the battlefield. It was very hot, and Ali Asghar was thirsty. Imam Husain (A) covered baby Ali Asghar with his clothes to protect him from the burning sun. Yazid's men saw Imam Husain (A) had something in his hand. Imam Husain (A) walked to Yazid's soldiers. and uncovered Ali Asghar. He held Ali Asghar high with both his hands and said: "O soldiers of Yazid, you want to kill me, but what has this little child done to you? He has not had a drop of water for three days. He is dying of thirst. I beg you to give water to this innocent little child." Not one of Yazid's soldiers brought any water for Ali Asghar. Once more, Imam Husain (A) asked: Maybe you think that when you bring water for this child, I will drink it too. I will put this little child on the ground. You can come and give him water yourself." Imam Husain (A) placed Ali Asghar on the burning sand of Karbala. As they looked at the thirsty innocent baby, they began feeling ashamed and thinking of their own children. Some started crying. Umar ibn Saad, Yazid s evil commander, became worried that his soldiers will turn against him. He ordered his best archer: "Harmallah! What are you waiting for? Silence the little child! Harmallah aimed an arrow, and Ali Asghar died instantly.

LESSON 2: THE LIVING IMAM TASK BAR READING STUDENTS CAN FOLLOW ALONG WITH THE TEACHER BY TURNING TO THE OUR PRESENT IMAM PAGE. WORKSHEETS STUDENTS WILL MATCH THE TITLES OF IMAM AL-MAHDI (A) WITH THEIR MEANINGS. In this lesson students will learn about the 12th Imam, Al-Mahdi, as well as his titles and why he is in Ghaybah. SAY: Does anyone remember the name of our 12th and present Imam? Wait for answers. SAY: Our present Imam s name is Muhammad bin Hasan, also known as Imam al- Mahdi. Does anyone remember why he is titled al-mahdi and what it means? Wait for answers. Students can also turn to the READING, located in the TASK BAR. SAY: Good. Our 12th Imam is al-mahdi because he is guided by Allah alone. This is why we follow Imam al-mahdi (A) as our leader, because he is the only living person who is the best at following Allah. Imam al-mahdi (A) has been living for a very long time, but is hidden from us. We will talk about why that is in a moment. He also has other titles. Al-Hujjah means that he is the proof of Allah on earth. One day, the 10th Imam, Imam al-hadi (A), told his companion Dawood that following the 12th Imam will be very hard for you. Dawood asked, Why? And the Imam replied, Because people will not be able to see or talk to him. Then, he asked the Imam, So, how should we remember him? He said, By saying Al-Hujjah min Aali Muhammad The Proof from the family of Prophet Muhammad. (Al-Kafi, Vol. 1 P. 328) He is also known as Saahib az-zamaan, the Living Master. One day, Imam Hasan al-askari (A) told his son, I have some good news for you! You are Saahib az-zamaan, the Living Master. Now, why do you think Imam al-mahdi (A) is hidden from us? Wait for answers. Have students follow along in the READING. SAY: When we say the Imam is in Ghaybah, we mean he is hidden from his followers. Many people ask why Imam al-mahdi (A) is in Ghaybah. Why did Allah hide him from the believers? Wait for ideas. SAY: After the death of the Holy Prophet, the Imams tried their best to guide and lead the believers towards the right path. They taught true Islam, and spread Islamic teachings that the Prophet (S) had taught. They were often bothered by the rulers of their times. These rulers were jealous and afraid of the Imams. So, they prevented them from teaching others, kept them under very strict control, and sometimes put them in jail. Many of our Imams were poisoned by the rulers of their time. To protect the Twelfth Imam, Allah placed him in Ghaybah. This way, the enemies cannot hurt him, and he is safe. Allah hid the Imam. While in Ghaybah, the Imam can still guide the people and be the best example and role model for us but without fear of being killed by the enemies. Students can now work on the WORKSHEET located in the TASK BAR. T

SAY: Now we are going to learn about what we can do to prepare for when Imam al-mahdi (A) comes out of ghaybah. Does anyone have any ideas on what we can do to prepare? Wait for answers. You can do the CIRCLE TIME Activity located in the TASK BAR. After the activity, students can also turn to the READING, located in the TASK BAR. SAY: We can all try to be good Muslims. Someone who is waiting for the lmam to appear so he can join him should have good Akhlaq. He or she should do good deeds and be a true Muslim. A person who does bad deeds is not a true believer, and cannot say he or she is a friend of the Imam. The Imam will welcome those people to join him in spreading truth on Earth who are followers of the right path. All those who are eager to meet the Imam should prepare by doing as many good deeds as possible, and staying away from sins and evil. Imam is aware of the deeds of the Muslims. When he knows they are doing good deeds, he is pleased with them. Their bad deeds trouble him. Each believer should try and do good deeds so the Imam is happy with them, and will welcome them when he appears. SAY: All believers are waiting for the arrival of Imam al-mahdi (A). They hope they will be from among the followers of the Imam. They pray that Allah will make them from among the people who help and work with the Imam when he appears. Believers need to do more than just wait silently for the Imam to appear. The following are some things which we may do during the period of Ghaybah. We can remember him through reciting Dua and Ziyaarah. There are many things we can recite every day to show that we remember the Imam. Some of these are: ziyaarah of the Twelfth Imam, Dua al-ahd, and other longer duas. The least we can do is greet him daily by saying Assalaamu alayka yaa Imam az- Zamaan - Peace be on you, Imam of the time and recite Dua Al-Faraj. Let s recite both of these together. Together as a class, convey your salaam to Imam al-mahdi (A). You can teach them to stand out of respect for him and how since its Wajib for a Muslim to respond to a salaam, Imam al-mahdi (A) will always respond back! At this time you can do the AUDIO ART EXTENSION and COLORING Activities located in the TASK BAR. T

READING: THE LIVING IMAM (Part II) Name : Muhammad bin Hasan Title : Al-Mahdi (the guided one), Al-Hujjah (proof of Allah), Saahib az-zamaan (the living master). Birthday : Friday, 15th of Sha ban 255 A.H in Samarra Father : Imam Hasan al-askari AS) Mother : Sayyida Narjis (A) Alive and in Ghaybah. 4

WHY IS OUR IMAM HIDDEN FROM US? Why is our Imam hidden from us? When we say Imam is in ghaybah we mean he is hidden from his followers. Many people ask why Imam al-mahdi (A) is in ghaybah. Why did Allah conceal him from the believers? The following is one of the possible reason for his ghaybah. After the death of the Holy Prophet, the Imams tried their best to guide and lead the believers towards the right path. They taught true Islam and spread Islamic teachings that the Prophet (S) had taught. They were often harassed by the Caliphs of their times. These Caliphs were jealous and afraid of the Imams. So they prevented them from teaching others, kept them under very strict control, and sometimes put them in jail. Many of our Imams were poisoned by the Caliphs of their time. To protect the Twelfth Imam, Allah placed him in ghaybah. This way the enemies could not reach him. In the Holy Quran Allah says: They intend to blow out the Light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His Light, even though the disbelievers may not like it. (61:8)

PREPARING FOR THE IMAM TO COME Preparing for the Imam to come All believers are eager for the coming of Imam al-mahdi (A). They hope they will be from among the followers of the Imam. They pray that Allah should help them be among the people who help and work with the Imam when he appears. What are our duties during the ghaybah of the Imam? Should we just wait and do nothing else? Believers need to do more than just wait silently for the Imam to appear. The following are some things that we may do during ghaybah. 1. Be a good Muslim We can all try to be good Muslims. Someone who is waiting for the lmam to appear so he can join him should have good Akhlaq. He or she should do good deeds and be a true Muslim. A person who does bad deeds is not a true believer and cannot say he or she is a friend of the Imam. When he knows they are doing good deeds, he is pleased with them. Their bad deeds trouble him. Each believer should try and do good deeds so the Imam is happy with them, and will welcome them when he appears.
