They do not like Soorya reaching the meridian (right on top of head noon time) as the severety of the sun affects their operations. However they welcome sunset as they can carry on their operations without any hindrance. In summary, Rakshasas are afraid of Sun. The three times are known as junction times (Sandhi kaalas). Junction of Night and day is called Prathyusha, junction of Ante meridian and Post Meridian is known as Abhijith, junction of day and night is known as Pradosha. Rakshasas have three types of power weapon power, vehicle power and self power. These three powers in them increase during the sandhya kaalas in order to stop/postpone sunrise, sun reaching meridian, and hasten sunset. During these sandhya kaalas, the influence of rakshasi power within the humans increase. In order to neutralize/eliminate the influence of the rakshasi power, during sandhyavandane Sooryarghya is given thrice. 3

It is also used as a routine to pick up all details required for daily sankalpa. Ideally one should have a glance of the narrations of the ensuing month atleast about a week before the beginning of the month. This would be of great help in knowing in advance about the forthcoming vratas. Further, each day one should make it a routine to look at the Panchangam for the details - thithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga, karana and the vrata narrations - of the current day and the next day. This will help in not missing a vrata by ignorance / forgetfulness. Veda contains 20,125 Manthras, 18 Puranas, 8 Upanishats Jul Jul

A day in the panchanga is reckoned from one sunrise to the next sunrise (roughly 6 am to next 6 am). This is reported as 6-00 hours to hours.(time after midnight upto the Sunrise, which is considered a part of the previous day in the panchanga is reported as times ranging from to about hours, e.g am is written as 26-34). Current Day For counting Impurity (Ashoucha) period due to Birth and Death the extent of Current day (on the Day of occurance) is required. First 5/8 parts of the Rathrimana (night time - sunset to sunrise) is counted as part of the Current day and the rest as Next day. For a notional Sunrise of 6 am and Sunset of 6 pm, upto 1-30 am is considered as Current Day. This also means, the current day is from previous 1-30 am. However for Rajaswala (Menses) nirnaya, first 2/3 of the night time is considered as part of current day, in which case 2-00 am would be the cutoff point. Shraddha is also worship of the God One shraddha is equal to worshipping 96 forms of Vishnu (Shannavathi Roopas of Bhagavantha) as the deity in a shraddha is called Shannavathi Narayana / Shraddhadeva. This is the Janardhana roopi Bhagavantha. Shraddha is not inferior in worship of God to any other vrata be it Anantha vrata, Krishnashtami, Vralakshmi etc. During a shraddha, Pithru devathas and Vishwe devathas are invited. Pithru devathas deliver food to the Pithrus (similar to Postal Money order system). Vishwe devathas protect the shraddha. In order to satisfy the pithrus, seven activities are integrated into a shraddha. They are: homa, pindapradaana, uchchishtapinda, vikira, brahmana bhojana, bhoori bhojana and dakshina. Agnoukarane devasthaaha swargasthe viprabhojane pindadaanena yamasthaaha Narake vikeeryenathu uchchishte pishaachaaha asuraaha booribhojane dakshinadaanena manushyaaha Pithrus will be satisfied by different activities depending on their current status. If they are 1. Devathas by homa (rugvedis do panihoma palm has agni), 2. in swarga by brahmana bhojana, 3. in yamaloka by pindapradaana, 4. in naraka by vikira (keeping anna in front of a leaf), 5. pishaachis by uchchishta pinda, 6. rakshasas by bhoori bhojana and 7. humans by dakshina. Thilamannam cha paaneeyam dadhi ksheeram gudam thathaa madhusarpinasamaayuktham ashtaangam pindalakshanam smruthimukthaavali During a shraddha pithru deha is prepared in the form of pinda (rice ball) using eight items. Each of them forms different parts of the body: 1. Ellu and Rice Head, 3. Curds Nose, 4. Ghee Ears, 5. Jaggery Hands, 6. Honey Hairs, 7. Milk Heart and 8. Water Legs. Ellu, Uddu and Dharbhe are born out of the sweat of Bhagavantha. Hence they are very important items for functions of peace. Ladies wear and bless, Pithrus eat and bless goes the saying. This means Ladies should be gifted (by way of daana - give away) dresses (traditionally Saree with Blouse), beuty aids to wear and enjoy to their heart s content. Men on the other hand have to be served with excellent food for them to enjoy. Naturally they will bless the giver. March 2010, 11th -, 12th - Shravana Ekaadashi Basis Bhagavatha/Vaishnava observance is decided based on the rule that Dashami should have ended before Arunodaya (96 minutes period preceding Sunrise). As the Sunrise occurs at different times of the same day at different places, maximum of three ekadashis in a year (sometimes none) will have to be observed on a on different days in different places basis. This is due to geographical/natural reasons only and Mutts calculations/practices are not the cause. However, this Deshabedha is practiced in Uttaradi Mutt only. In other mutts, the later day of the two different days is observed as at all places. - Those who observe may ascertain the dates in their Mutt. Few Udupi mutts are using Drigganitha Panchangam for day to day use. Sometimes their could be on a different day. Smartha is based on thithi at the time of sunrise.
