The TRUTH is that LORD SHIVA dispels all forms of darkness or negativity of the soul and restores the soul to its original joyous state. Lord Shiva can be easily pleased with heartfelt devotion. Lord Shiva loves ABHISEKAM. Any action done at apt time and place yields fruitful results. Thus, for Lord Shiva the most sacred fast (VIRATHAM) is SHIVARATHRI. Every month Shivarathri occurs on the night before New moon. But the Shivarathri during the Tamil Masi month is considered as Mahashivarathri. The most popular legend is that when there was an argument between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu as to who is superior, Lord Shiva kept a test for them. Lord Shiva said that whoever touches his head or feet will be declared as superior. Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu went to outer space and underground respectively in search of Lord Shiva s head and feet. Alas, both were unable to find Lord Shiva s head and feet. To remove the ego of both Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva appeared as JYOTHI (LIGHT) in the Masi month during Chaturdasi thithi between 11.30pm to 1.00 am. This auspicious period is termed as LINGOTHBHAVAKALAM. Lord Shiva s consort Goddess Parvathi performed pooja for Lord Shiva during the Mahasivarathri during the four kalams and requested Lord Shiva to bless all beings who worship him on this day. Benefits of Shiva Pooja: Devotion to Lord Shiva in thought, word and deed on Mahashivarathri is equivalent to 1000days of performing Shiva pooja and one is blessed with immense health and wealth in all spheres of life. During Mahashivarathri, chanting of PANCHATARA MANTRAM- OHM NAMA SHIVAYA, performing SHIVA pooja, donating alms, food, clothes to needy yields infinite punya. The Celestial beings like Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Indra, Lord Gubera obtained their respective powers by worshipping Lord Shiva. Even a very sinful person gets Moksha, if he or she worships Lord Shiva on Mahashivarathri since they are absolved of all karma.

3 Contribution to Shiva pooja at Temples for Abshikam, annadhan, vasthradhan blesses one with peace and prosperity. Guidelines for MahaShivarathri Viratham: One awakes during bramhamootha (4-6am) and after abulation, performs Shiva pooja. Water fast is ideal till the next day. For those unable to keep fast, can have milk and fruits. From evening Pradosh kalam to next day Bramhamoortham, it is advised to perform four kalam Shiva pooja at home. Those who are unable to do it, can participate in the temple pooja.
