In a recent observation it has found in Orissa, more than 8 fatalities occur in road traffic accidents. In the year 2009, 7,789 road accidents were registered in the State with 2,920 registered deaths and 9,400 injuries. As compared to the national average 21, death rate is at 35 per 100 accidents in Orissa. Unfortunately, there are not a single specialized trauma centre is in Orissa, who having the latest facilities to cater the need of the on going demand. As it was long due for the people of the state Vedanta has brought a great relief for Orissa, they are setting up the first first-of-its kind state-ofthe-art Burn and Trauma Centre in. In this endeavor an internationally reputed hospital maker HOSMAC has engaged with the Vedanta to give their professional expertise to this project The need of such hospital is very high at this hour; it is unfortunate that the State has no improved and competent facilities to tackle such cases. Commenting on the need of an integrated trauma care centre in the, Dr. Basant Pati, Deputy Medical Superintendent of IMS & SUM Hospital says, "While acts as one of the major referring zones for healthcare to all surrounding districts and beyond, the available infrastructure for the burn injuries and trauma are not as per the required standard. Interestingly, most burn cases (above 40% burns) are referred to SCB Medical College in Cuttak as there is no competent facility to tackle such cases in. Dearth of skilled manpower and inadequate emergency transportation add to the problems of the patients suffering from serious trauma and burns. So, I feel, an advanced trauma care centre should come up in to cater to the large number of trauma patients in and around the city." The sourced confirmed that the idea to set up a state of art hospital at Bhubanheswar has recently been discussed between Chief Minster Mr Navin Patttanik and Mr Anil Agarwal, Chairman of the Vedanta Group in his last meeting, and off late the Vedanta management reviewed it seriously and Government has agreed to extend their support to make the best in class.

This will become a referral resource for communities in nearby regions. Both the clinical and nonclinical facilities will be of international standard. Besides the integrated trauma care facilities including General Medicine, General Surgery, Reconstructive surgery, Orthopedic surgery, Neurosurgery, Vascular surgery, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, ENT and Radiology and Imaging diagnostic services, this centre will also have Emergency Care Services, Ambulatory Care Services and blood bank. The proposed centre is expected to come out as an unmatched proposition in trauma and burns which will include bone bank and skin bank facility. Currently there is no same line dedicated trauma hospital in Orissa or even neighboring state like West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh or Andhra Pradesh." "The institute is the first level-i trauma and burns facility in Orissa and will act as leading trauma centre in the country. The bone bank and skin bank is an unparallel facility in the country which will be available here. The centre will be backed by an integrated life saving road and air ambulance service. The hospital will ensure maximum patient safety and quality of care and will operate in line of NABH / JCI standard," he adds. During the survey conducted by HOSMAC, around 70% of the interviewed doctors expressed interest to join if any such ultra-modern centre comes up in the vicinity. "As doctors, we always encourage adoption of modern technology and innovation in the health sector. In Orissa, despite having expertise, we sometimes become unable to deliver service to the needy people due to lack of adequate infrastructure. So, I would welcome any such initiative to improve this condition," expressed Dr. Sangram Mohapatra, MD of Sunflower Hospital. The centre will also be associated with different national and international medical institutions. Providing emergency healthcare services to the patients belonging to all income groups in an affordable and timely manner, with a human touch is the motto of Vedanta behind conceptualizing this centre. Being first-of-its kind in the State, the trauma care centre is expected to be the one-stop destination for the patients suffering from burn injuries and trauma and be an example for others healthcare providers to follow. As a socially responsible corporate, Vedanta has always remained the frontrunner in implementing different innovative schemes and projects and has also pioneered many novel concepts in the field of social welfare.
