Sept. 2, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 10:00 a.m. Sacrament of Holy Communion As We Prepare for Worship We Gather in God s Name Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous to be understood. excerpt from Mysteries, Yes by Mary Oliver Prelude Ancient of Days Sadler Welcome *Gathering Words from Isaiah 56:7-8 The LORD God is the one who gathers the outcasts. And the Lord will still gather others. The LORD God is the one who brings us to this holy place. With joy we come to the house of the Lord. The LORD God s house is a house of prayer for all peoples. We gather to bring our offerings. Let us worship the Lord! *Gathering Hymn #65 Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah Call to Prayer Brothers, join your voices; sisters, let your prayers abound. Let us pray together as the people of God. Prayer of Adoration and Confession from Isaiah 56 Loving and merciful God, once again you call us to you. We accept your invitation with thanksgiving. We come with joy to be in your presence. 1

But this is also what betrays our hypocrisy. Forgive us when people come to seek you, and we turn them away. Forgive our pride when we believe that they will dirty your holy place. Forgive our lack of mercy when we believe they have sinned too greatly. Forgive our lack of humility when we believe that certainly you don t mean them. Forgive us when we try to save your Church from those you are saving. Holy God, lead us to act justly and to do what is righteous. Open our hearts so that we may open our hands to all. Correct our eyesight when we cloud it with our own views. silent confession Amen. Words of Life Hosea 14:4, 7 I will heal their faithlessness; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them. They will again live beneath my shadow, they will flourish like a garden; they will blossom like the vine, their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon. In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! *Our Response #591 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! (refrain) *The Peace The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. God s Word Comes Alive Prayer for Illumination from Luke 24:25, Lord, our eyes cannot fully comprehend your Word to us, and too often, we are slow of heart to respond. May the Holy Spirit bring understanding, so that our hearts may burn within us as we hear, accept and live your Word to us. Amen. 2

A Reading from the Gospels Luke 12:22-34 (NRSV) 22 He said to his disciples, Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you you of little faith! 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. 32 Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. A Reading from the Gospels Luke 3:31-38 (CEB) 31 son of Melea son of Menna son of Mattatha son of Nathan son of David 32 son of Jesse son of Obed son of Boaz son of Sala son of Nahshon 33 son of Amminadab son of Admin son of Arni son of Hezron son of Perez son of Judah 34 son of Jacob son of Isaac son of Abraham son of Terah son of Nahor 35 son of Serug son of Reu son of Peleg son of Eber son of Shelah 36 son of Cainan son of 3

Prayer after Communion Faithful and loving God, you make yourself known in the waters of our Baptism and the meal you feed us at your Table. 4

For both the inward and outward signs of your grace, we give you thanks. Eternal and everlasting God, you bind us together in these Sacraments with the saints that have gone before us. For the lives of the faithful who wait for us to join them in heaven, we give you thanks. God, our comfort and our consolation, you lead us in our times of discouragement and in our times joy. For the resurrection and the life, we give you thanks. With both humility and boldness, we ask that you continue to transform our minds and hearts as we go out into the world. May we remember our Baptism and be glad. May we remember the taste of the loaf and the grape and be renewed. And in all things, may we give glory to you. Amen.
