HENSON VALLEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH ( Disciples of Christ ) 1900 Tucker Road Fort Washington, MD JULY 2016 UPDATE DEVOTIONAL The Work of Worship The work of worship gathers everything in our common lives that has been dispersed by sin and brings it to attention before God; at the same time it gathers everything in God s revelation that has been forgotten in our distracted hurrying and puts it before us so that we can offer it up in praise and obedience. All of this does not take place merely in a single hour of worship. But, faithfully repeated, week after week, year after year, there is an accumulation to wholeness. The Throne of God and of the Lamb is at the center. His servants will offer God service worshipping, they ll look on his face, their foreheads mirroring God. Never again will there be any night. Revelation 22: 1b 5a Living the Message: Daily Reflections with Eugene Peterson HarpersCollins 1996 FOR YOUR INFORMATION, PRAYERFUL REFLECTION, FAITHFUL ACTION Ministry to the Differently-abled and Their Families The first monthly Birthday Party for the differently-abled, scheduled for Sunday, 3 July, will feature entertainment by Sydney Henderson, dance therapist, and Henson Valley s own Chime Choir. Balloons, birthday cards and gifts, fellowship, and refreshments (including ice cream and cake) will round out the celebration. Attending this inaugural monthly birthday celebration will be Councilman Rev. Tony Lawson, representing the office of Governor Larry Hogan. Rev. Lawson is the governor s liaison to faith communities that minister to the differently-abled. Also attending will be

Rev. Allen Harris, Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Capital Area, Ms. Kanzada Douglass and her grandson, Jason, who is differently-abled, and Ms. Melonee Clark of the Arc of Prince George s County and her daughter, Ciara, who is also differently-abled. Ms. Douglass has been a major supporter of this ministry and continues to provide guidance, insight, and hands-on support to Henson Valley as we, led by the Holy Spirit, move the ministry forward. Ms. Clark and Ciara are providing the birthday cards for the celebration. Henson Valley Christian Church has formally applied to become a vendor for the Prince George s County Public Schools Infants and Toddlers Program. Since HVCC began providing space for the program, it (the program) has been overseen by the County Health Department. This year, oversight became the responsibility of the school system. The school system has its own processes for establishing partnerships and, for HVCC to continue to provide space for the Infants and Toddlers Program, we have to become an approved vendor. The application and contract that are required have been complete and signed and the expectation is that, effective, 1 July 2016, the new arrangements with the school system will be official. Conversations are taking place with the leadership of the Infants and Toddlers Program regarding the creation of a second group that is more inclusive than is the current one. The goal is to form a group that includes both the differently-abled and young people from the wider community. Please remember to purchase food and household items that carry the official Boxtops for Education coupon so that Henson Valley can continue to meaningfully support the James Ryder Randall Elementary School Special Education Program. Consider inviting your friends and neighbors to save the coupons as well the more coupons we collect, the more support we can offer. The school supplies list for the next school year will not be substantially different from this past year s list so the Henson Valley is asked to begin to collect supplies and bring them to the church throughout the summer. Consider inviting friends and neighbors to join us in this effort, both with the school supplies and the Boxtops for Education. Tell them about this ministry and extend the invitation for them to participate. There are people who would be willing to help if only they were asked. Henson Valley Christian Church will welcome Rev. Allen Harris, Regional Minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Capital Area, as he joins us in worship on Sunday, 3 July He will be the preacher for the service and he will celebrate communion with us as well. We are looking forward to hosting Rev. Harris and having him remain with us as we sponsor our first monthly Birthday Party for the differently-abled.

2016 graduates Danielle Azu and Victoria Griffin were celebrated in worship on Sunday, 12 June. They were gifted with a throw blanket on which a cross, a scroll, a graduation cap, and the year 2016 are inscribed. The scroll contains the words of Proverbs 4:11 and a personalized message of congratulations is embroidered on the cap, along with Danielle s name on her throw blanket and Victoria s name on hers. Both young women gave a brief statement of how their faith has sustained them to this point in their lives and we pray their faith will continue to inspire them as Danielle enters Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Victoria enters her career as a nurse, serving at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Danielle has graciously shared her remarks for inclusion in this newsletter and we thank her for it. She writes: Throughout these 4 years of high school, I struggled and toiled as the school work, the stress, and the future continued to press me. I was a mess, but coming to church helped bring that peace in my heart. One of the songs usually sung is We ve come this far by faith This song was very uplifting during the times I felt defeated. Prayer was the main thing I did, whether it came to a test, or when I could not understand or remember something being taught in class. God listens when you ask him for help, but only if you put in your time and dedication. My church family was also a huge part of my success. They always reassured me that everything was going to be alright and sent kind words my way. When I needed help with essays to when I just needed to confide in someone, my church family was always there. I give glory to God that he has given me such a supportive band of pilgrims that have helped me travel through this segment of life. Thank You. The next Leadership Team meeting will be held on Saturday, 23 July at 2:00 p.m. Members of the Henson Valley Christian Church Leadership Team are: Carolyn Holland, Bessie Bradford, Marilyn Miles, Rev. Allen V. Harris, Regional Minister of the Christian Church Capital Area) and the Cabinet of General Ministries June 2016 In times of trouble, people of faith call upon God in prayer (Psalm 61:1-2) In these days, we pray for the families and friends of the 49 women and men killed and 53 wounded mostly LGBTQ Latinos and Latinas in Orlando on June 12, We pray for the families and friends of those killed across the country and around the world each day whose stories we will never hear. We pray for an end to violence of all kinds. (General Assembly Resolution 1539) Sadly, this week (June 17) is also the first anniversary of the shootings at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal

Church in Charleston. We pray Our Creator will bring peace to those who mourn, those who cope with the horrors they have seen, and those who will work for years to restore wholeness to lives shattered by violence. And we pray that the Holy Spirit will inspir e us to act in powerful ways to build the Beloved Community. Beyond prayer, people across the United States are asking how we can stop the seemingly endless parade of massacres. We are growing numb even as the numbers of those who have died grow larger and larger, too large to comprehend. We argue over the cause; we get angry and cannot find common ground, then do nothing. And by doing nothing, we become complicit when violence erupts yet again. We, the undersigned, write to encourage Disciples to move beyond numbness and to turn our anger to a righteous cause. We can start with honest conversation even spirited debate grounded in the love and hope God gives us especially for times so disturbing and fearful. We can model civility and mutual respect even in emotionally charged conversations related to religion, sexual orientation, gender identification, race, and weapons. We can seek to share God's love and welcome with others as God has with us, especially those on the margins who see violence as their only option. We can persevere in calling for justice. The truth is that we are ALL God's beloved children, and we must ALL learn to live together, honoring and respecting one another as fellow humans. We cannot let these hard conversations devolve into nitpicking about types of weapons or national origins or "liberal" vs "conservative" agendas. Regretfully, the tragedy in Orlando has focused attention on the purported religion of the perpetrator, though the number of violent adherents to Islam are a miniscule percentage of those who claim the faith. We cannot be goaded into condemning all because of a few. The violence we have experienced is not about Islam. It is about hate and bigotry- as the shooting in Charleston was. This is the moment for religious, civic, and political leaders indeed, for all of us to stand together, united, to denounce prejudice and violence directed toward any group. It is also time for us to consider the violence itself. As a faith tradition that aims to welcome all to the table set by God, conversations about the rights, responsibilities, and consequences of gun ownership are challenging within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). (GA 1521) But as the death toll rises, as Newtown and Aurora and Charleston and San Bernardino and Orlando become synonymous with the horrors of gun violence, it is clear those challenging conversations must take place. And they must take place now if we have any hope of stopping future massacres. Questions at the core of this conversation include: - What are the responsibilities and guidelines to determine who should be allowed to own guns and who should not? - What kinds of weapons should be available to people in the United States? - How do we communicate with lawmakers and other influencers when personal or political interest appears to supersede issues of public safety and basic human morality?

- How do we help people see beyond violence? How do we help individuals who do not see hope in their lives? How do our communities respond to the marginalized? - How do we work with other peace-loving people to provide some measure of comfort for wounds that will always linger? Ultimately, if these conversations are to make any difference at all, they must lead to action. We will undoubtedly find many different approaches to ending gun violence. This is actually an opportunity. Any tactic, public or private or sociological, that may reduce violence deserves to be tried, the results analyzed, and the best solutions implemented widely. We have already waited too long to begin this work. The lives of children, women and men have already been lost, and countless more lives are at stake. As Christians we are called to embody compassion and mercy in even the most challenging times, thus we offer prayer and hospitality to the wounded. We are also called to action, to courageously engage in the things that make for peace, starting with the difficult conversations that examine options and lead us toward solutions. Even as we denounce violence, bigotry and hatred, may we then actively seek to model peace-making, respect and love. May we be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit among us, showing us the ways to end gun violence and address the root causes of all violence, bringing the wholeness and peace to which we are called in Christ Jesus.
