Reformation Carnival Chili Contest Saturday, October 15, 11 AM to 3 PM Bring a crock pot full of your best chili to share. All submitted chilies will be judged, and the best chili will win a PRIZE! C: I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. CONFESSION OF SINS M: As believers in Christ we are called to repent of our sins and forgive one another. In the book of James we are told, Confess your sins to each other and pray for one another so that you may be healed. As the body of Christ we unite our hearts in prayer: C: Dearest Lord, I confess that I have been a sinner from birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. I show this every day when I rebel against you by thinking, speaking and doing things that you hate. I deserve nothing from you except what I have earned with my rebellion death now and forever. But I fall before you in contrition and repentance: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 2

Silence for personal confession WORD OF FORGIVENESS M: Dear friends in the Lord, hear the Word of our God: Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. Old Library Books For Sale Look over the withdrawn books on the table outside our new school library, now located in the church basement. Many are duplicates that we have held onto for a long time. The suggested donation is $0.25 per item. All donations will go to assist our school's Recess and Physical Education material fund. The book sale ends Sunday, September 11th. Donuts for South Dakota The time for the 6th-8th Grades trip to the Black Hills is fast approaching. There will be donuts available between services on Sunday, September 11th. If you are so moved, there will be envelopes available for you to give a monetary gift for these young adventurers. Make sure to ask the students what they are learning about the parks in the Black Hills. Please continue to keep these young people in your prayers as they prepare for the trip at the end of September. Sunday School Volunteers Sunday School resumes full-time today. We have been blessed with a good number of lambs to feed. In addition we have a good number of teachers to lead them. But we can still use more help. Having a helper for each classroom would be of great benefit to help keep the children on task and provide a better learning environment. So we are looking for some SundaySchool helpers to assist in our classrooms. The grade levels we have this year are: Pre K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-7 and 8-12 grades. If you are willing and able to help out, even on a limited or parttime basis, please get in touch with Blake Baumann or Jean Reigsecker. 5 St. Mark News and Notes Nursery At St. Mark, we love children and encourage their worship, too! In the foyer, we have some children s busy bags hanging from hooks that you are most welcome to use in church. If your child becomes restless during the service and you feel you both could just use a little break, you re welcome to use our nursery. Ask an usher to lead you to the nursery. Most of us have or have had young children, so you re with caring people who understand what it s like to have little ones. The speaker will be Pastor Wayne Hilgendorf who was Faith's pastor at the time of the amalgamation of St. John, Rising City; Zion, Garrison; and St. Paul, Gresham. Pastor Hilgendorf also served as chairman of the Nebraska District mission board for nine years. Faith Lutheran is located at 300 Hamilton Street. Supper will be provided. Sing to Jesus M: Heavenly Father, heaven rejoices when a sinner repents. Guard us against self-righteousness that sees no need to hear of Christ and His redemption, and preserve us in Your Word and grace, C: That as Your people we might always be about the proclamation of repentance and the forgiveness of sins for the sake of Jesus. M: Holy God, protect us from all that would make us unholy and defiled by sin. Sharpen our attention to Your Law, that we might not make excuses for lawlessness and indulge our sinful nature. C: Preserve us continually in repentance, and in Your love grant to us a pure heart, for the sake of Your Son, who came into this world to save sinners. M: Lord God, You promise to shepherd Your sheep for the sake of Jesus. According to Your Word, seek the lost, bring back the stray, bind up the injured and strengthen the weak. C: Have mercy upon all who look to You for deliverance. M: Lord God, You seek out Your sheep from all nations and gather them into Your fold. Remember all refugees who have been displaced from their homes because of threats and violence. Provide for their needs in their time of displacement, and grant them the security of a home once more. Provide for the needs of immigrants and grant wisdom to nations for the welfare of both citizens and sojourners. C: Grant that Your people might prove to be good neighbors for all who are scattered far from home. 5

6 M: Almighty God, on this day of remembrance in our land, remind us always of the realities of evil and death in this world, and further keep us in the certainty that Christ has overcome the world. C: Preserve peace in this and every nation, thwart the plans of all who desire violence and war, and give to rulers wisdom and integrity to protect the innocent and punish the evildoer. M: Delighting in heaven s joy over one who repents, we give thanks for all the saints who have gone before us and now share in the rejoicing around Your throne. C: Preserve us in that faith and hope until the day when You gather us to Yourself in heaven. M: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen. CLOSING DIALOGUE M: We leave God s house strengthened once again to worship him throughout the week until we meet here again. Our holy God has given us forgiveness through the life, death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. So use an opportunity this week to serve your friends and neighbors by sharing Christ s forgiveness with them. C: O Lord, strengthen our faith, help us to put our faith into action and give us the zeal to accomplish your will. M: Confident of our forgiveness and God s power working in us, our mission is clear: We dedicate ourselves... C: to REACH all the world with the Gospel of Jesus. to TEACH all according to His saving Word, and to REJOICE in the salvation that Christ has won for us all. HYMN: CW 561 Lord, Speak to Us that We May Speak THE BLESSING CONFESSION OF FAITH: 2nd Article of the Apostles Creed C: I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. M: What do you mean when you make this confession of your faith? C: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. All this He did that I should be his own, and live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he has risen from death and lives and rules eternally.
