I pray you had a blessed Christcentered Christmas! Now we press ahead in faith for a new year of opportunities to serve God and spread the gospel to all who will listen. This year I have felt the leading of the Lord to center in on the person of Jesus Christ. After all, it s all about Jesus! He is still the way, the truth and the life! (John 14:6) In John 14, the disciples were troubled as to Jesus comments that he was going to leave them. In addition one would betray him and another deny him. Jesus encouraged them by saying some things about himself and the Father. First, Jesus takes us to the Father (John 14:1-6) When this life is over and our journey done, we have a home in heaven. This is the Blessed Assurance. Second, Jesus reveals the Father (John 14:7-11). Jesus declared, I and the Father are one. He told Philip if you ve seen me you have seen the Father. Jesus put a face on God. He is our example as well as enables us to walk with him by the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Third, Jesus glorifies the Father (John 14:12-18) As we live for Jesus we bring glory to His name. As we walk out the fruit of the Spirit, we lift up Jesus who draws the lost to himself. Only through prayer and the power of the Holy Spirit can we glorify the Lord. Finally, Jesus and the Father dwell with and with us! (John 14:19-31). There is a deeper place of relationship and fellowship we can have with the Father through the Son. Jesus is the way to the Father. He reveals the truth about the Father and, by the Holy Spirit, shares the life of the Father with us! No wonder Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled. Hallelujah! As we enter a new year, purpose to put Jesus first. (Matt. 6:33) and give Him preeminence (Col. 1:18) John 14 flows into John 15 where we see more benefits of a Christcentered life. In John 15:1-8, we draw his LIFE by abiding in the vine. In John 15:9-17, abiding depends on obeying. Obeying is tied to continued on page 2 continued on page 2

In John 15:18-27 we have the responsibility and privilege to bear His name. This will bring persecution, but God will help us endure and be willing to suffer for His name! May God give LHC a Christ-centered focus as we enter 2018 living by faith. In His grip, Children s & Family Pastor Dave Ekes Treasurer Donna Ekes David Bauman, Pastor Living Hope Church NINE REASONS CHRISTIANS SHOULD FAST Fasting is difficult for most people, but well worth the effort. 5 ADULT MINISTRY STRATEGY Herald of Hope Page 5 Connect uplifts the importance of worship, prayer, and fellowship in our everyday lives. Connect means to be in vital relationship with God, other believers, the church, and our family. It reminds us of the priority of building positive, long-lasting relationships with people at work, in the school and community, and at home. As we connect first with God, He makes it possible for us to build meaningful relationships with other believers; they, in turn, help us connect to a church family. These interconnected relationships enable us to welcome people who are not yet part of our church or who are pre-believers. Grow means knowing and obeying God s Word and understanding how it makes a daily difference in our lives. Gaining knowledge is vital, but we need more than information. True discipleship means discovering something fresh and inspiring in a passage we have read hundreds of times and acting to apply it. Serve reminds us of our responsibility to work alongside fellow believers. Our churches are full of ministry and service opportunities from manning a food pantry to hosting a youth fellowship to teaching Sunday School classes. Every believer working together is required for a local church to function as God intended. God gifts and empowers us to serve and multiplies our efforts in exponential ways. Go moves us outside the walls of the church and into our community and world. It may mean we drive a nail into a Habitat home, offer a cup of cold water, or tutor a child at an after-school program. It means we develop relationships and discern when it is time to talk about spiritual matters. Going is fed by a desire to experience firsthand God s work in the lives of others, recognizing we are one instrument He is using. Go is different from Serve; Go is outside the church while Serve is inside.

6 Page 6 Volume XXVIII, Issue NGM 2017 was quite a year, and God truly blessed our NGM group in it with so many opportunities to serve and be a blessing to others as well as being blessed! As NGM leaders, we so appreciate being able to serve our Sunday morning classes and our Wednesday Night NGM groups, allowing us to present the Gospel to the young people who attend. From serving at a variety of events through the year such as the Day in the Park, the Vacation Bible School, the church picnic, the Harvest Banquet, the Christmas Program and more, to attending concerts and conferences, participating in camp-ins and a camp out, 2017 held many great opportunities for our young people to be blessed and to be a blessing. We are excited about what God has done and are looking forward to what God is doing and what He is going to do next with and through our Next Generation in 2018! Christmas Program 2017 Why Christmas Our Why Christmas program was not a question, but hopefully an answer! As we celebrate Christmas, we also need to be reminded of the cross and why Jesus came to this earth. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who were involved. From the setting of props to the final production, there are so many to thank. I want to give a special thank you to my wife, Donna, who wrote and directed the entire program, and helped us all be able to present a good solid Gospel message. K thank you! LOOKING AHEAD - NGM JANUARY...and beyond SCHEDULE 2018 As with all things, we can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps. With that in mind, the best we can do is to present a tentative schedule of coming events. This is a general schedule and is subject to change as the Lord leads. Additional and more detailed information will be given as it comes available. 10 Page 10 Volume XXVIII, Issue 1 UPDATE by Jeff Jensen I Know the Plans I Have for You! As I begin to write this, Char is on her way to Reedsburg Physicians Group for her last day of 20 years of work in the clinic. While there were many blessings, good memories made and some wonderful friendships, she leaves not looking back, but ahead to God s plan. Shortly after surrendering our lives to the Lord Jesus 35 years ago the Holy Spirit placed a call to missions in our hearts. That desire has been worked out in a variety of ways from full time missions in Cebu City, Philippines in , to annual trips and outreach to international workers here at home. Ever since returning from Cebu in 1991, we have looked ahead to a time when we could serve in missions together for a more extended period. God has clearly affirmed and confirmed this desire as we prepare to spend about 5 weeks in the Philippines this coming January 25 to March 5. During that time we will visit Vietnam as well. Over these past 26 years, I have made many connections with pastors and churches in the Philippines as well as some J-1 international workers from the Philippines that we met in Wisconsin Dells. We look forward to visiting many of these friends living in the province and having a little more time to serve, encourage and unite our hearts. I am excited for Char to meet some of these people for the first time. I believe the Lord is preparing to distribute some spiritual gifts through her as she ministers to women. We are thankful for all the support many have given through the years, for health and strength to walk out God s plan, for the blessing to be involved in this kind of ministry, for the grace and love in our hearts for the nations and for the powerful message of eternal HOPE and LIFE in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Please Save the dates January 25 to March 5 on your prayer calendar.

11 Herald of Hope Page 11 The Lord has broadened and increased the ministry of ICONMISSION in 5 quick years throughout SE Asia and Eastern Europe. It has been an awesome blessing to witness and participate with the Holy Spirit the unfolding of many connections in remote areas with a variety of ministries and people, and then to cultivate ongoing involvement. It has become so clear that the goal is to encourage hearts and unite in love Col. 2:2. In 2017 ICONMISSION was involved in regular monthly support to YWAN workers is South Africa and Cambodia, and Pastor Vinh Nguyen in Vietnam. We have also been able to give Pastor Sarfraz and his family Christian refugees from Pakistan in Bangkok. $200 a month to help them survive where it is illegal for them to work. We have also seen a growing connection in Myanmar and sow regularly to orphanages and other individual needs and ministries. But it is so evident that showing up visiting is the most powerful expression of love and encouragement. Because I am so close to the people and places I have a personal investment and connection, and clearly see the Lord s heart in speaking value and purpose through this ministry. Would you allow me to be an advocate for the Lord and His ministry to the orphan, widow, poor and outcast and discouraged? Could I invite your prayer for ICONMISSION, for Char and me and the Philippine trip in January 25 March 5, and consideration of financial support for ongoing ministry monthly if possible. His GRACE is enough!!!!! Jeff and Char For tax deduction: give to Living Hope Church and designate to ICONMISSION.

12 Page 12 Volume XXIVII, Issue 1 Winning the Battle Within the Mind This article was adapted from Mastering the Silence: Strategies for Winning the Battles of the Mind by Doug Jones. THE ENEMY is out to devour us and uses thoughts, ideas, and suggestions to accomplish his task. But our loving Heavenly Father has not left us unequipped to protect ourselves. We have been given armor not just one piece, but the whole armor of God. Our armor is not made out of metal, but rather knowledge. It s what we know about truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and God s Word (Eph. 6:10-17). Where do we begin? How do we defend ourselves against the thoughts our enemy hurls at us? 1) Identify It! The identification of each thought that comes our way must be our first line of defense. Investigation begins with questions. Does the thought agree with the Word? If not, we are to view it as dangerous, as something to be avoided. Every thought has a life or death component attached to it! We have never had a thought come our way that did not have some type of life attached to it. Once a thought is allowed access into our lives, the nature or life within that thought begins its work. For example, here s a Thought most of us have probably had: Snub them. Give them the cold shoulder. Attached to this thought is a relationship-destroying component. The moment this idea is embraced and acted upon, our relationship with the individual begins to deteriorate. 1) Quench It! The second step is quenching thoughts. The word quench means to extinguish. A fire is extinguished when we cut off its fuel source. The fuel source of thoughts is attention. When we remove the attention factor from the thought, we are in essence quenching it. The more we entertain thoughts, the more they grow in strength. Likewise, But once our attentions has been redirected to the Word, our battle is half won! 3) Capture It! Paul admonished us to bring into captivity every thought (2 Cor. 10:5). Look carefully at the following phrase: Learn how thoughts take you captive, and you can learn how to take thoughts captive. For a thought to capture us, it must bring with it other thoughts that support its case. Working together, they endeavor to overwhelm us with evidence. They remind us of events and

13 Herald of Hope Page 13 Statements made by others that provide evidence that the attacking thought is legitimate. But by understanding this, we now have an advantage. We turn our attention off of the thought and onto what the Word has to say, which provides proof that the approaching thought is false. Speak to the attacking thought exactly as Jesus illustrated for us in Luke 4:4: It is written Let your voice be heard! 4) Maintain It! Maintaining our thought life is a key to addressing every issue we face. There is not a thought that our enemy can hurl at us that our God has not equipped us with scriptures to detect and defeat. Our responsibility is to find the appropriate scriptures and use them properly. Make the decision now to take what you know and use it properly. If for some reason you find yourself slipping, use I John 1:9 and ask the Father to forgive you. Then return to the task of vigilantly guarding what you allow your mind to dwell on. May God s grace and power be with you as you put on God s armor and stand against the wiles of the devil! SEVEN FACTORS THAT INHIBIT CHRISTIANS FROM FASTING 1. IGNORANCE Many Christians are ignorant of the Biblical exhortations to fast and the subsequent benefits of fasting in a proper way. Hosea 4:6 2. SELFISHNESS It is possible to allow mere temporal desires to cause us to esteem food (earthly pleasures) more than doing ggod s perfect will. Colossians 3: INDIFFERENCE After having acknowledged that the Lord is calling us to fast, the greatest motivation to do so lies in seeing the needs in our own lives and those around us. We must see the value and necessity of fasting in order to subject ourselves to this essential discipline. Job 23:12 4. LACK OF SELF-CONTR0L One aspect of the fruit of the Spirit of God is self-control. We must appropriate this aspect of God s character in order to discipline our spirit, soul, and body to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus. Galatians 5: WRONG PRIORITIES Wrong priorities can cause us to improperly place good and even pleasant food (Daniel 10:2-3) as a greater priority than seeing the Kingdom of God firmly established in our own lives. 6. A FALSE CONCEPT OF CHRISTIANITY This false concept involves not being aware of what it really means to be a disciple (disciplined follower) of Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:27 7. LACK OF MAKING CHRIST LORD Either He is Lord of all, or He is not Lord at all. Philippians 3:19

15 Herald of Hope Page 15 GOD S PLAN OF SALVATION Where will you spend ETERNITY? It only matters what the Bible says, not tradition, churches, religious leaders, scholars, books, visions, opinions, or any other entity. It is the responsibility of each of us to seek out the truth and to find the right way. Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. What the Bible says about each of us: 1. All are sinners with imperfect hearts in God s eyes: - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23 - For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. Ecclesiastes 7:20 2. There is an eternal penalty for sin: -For the wages of sin is death; Romans 6:23a -He that believeth on the son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3:36 -And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Rev. 20:15 3. The Lord Jesus Christ paid the penalty for the sin of mankind: -But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 - Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Revelation 1:5b Knowing the above alone will not save your soul. What the Bible says we must do: 4. Repent, turn from sin and turn to God: - except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3 - Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 30:21 5. Believe on and receive the Lord Jesus Christ, and Him alone, as your personal Lord and Saviour: - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 - That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9 If you have received Jesus Christ as your Saviour, as a Christian you should: Read your Bible every day to get to know Christ better. (2 Timothy 2:15) (Psalm 119:105) Talk to God in prayer every day. (Matthew 21:22) (Philippians 4:6) Be baptized, worship, fellowship, and serve with other Christians in a church where Christ is preached and the Bible is the final authority. (Matthew 28:19) (Hebrews 10:25) (2 Timothy 3:16) Tell others about Christ. (Mark 16:15) (1 Corinthians 9:16) (Romans 1:16)
