1 Christ Blesses Little Children Matthew 19:13-15 Mark 10:13-16 Luke 18:15-17
2 Texts: Matthew 19:13-15, Christ Blesses Little Children 13. Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. 14. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 15. And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. Mark 10:13-16, 13. And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15. Verily, I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. 16. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. Luke 18:15-17, 15. And they brought unto him also infants, that he would touch them; but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 17. Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein. Commentary: I. Certain parents brought their babes, little children to Jesus. A. This event took place at the conclusion of Jesus remarks about marriage and divorce attesting to the wondrous blessings of marriage following God s divine plan. II. The little children were brought to Jesus in the hope that Jesus would: A. touch, lay his hands on them. B. pray for them. III. The disciples rebuked the people who were seeking to bring their children to Jesus. A. Why did the apostles take it upon themselves to keep the babes and little children from Jesus? 1. They had no instructions from Jesus to do anything like this! 2. Did they think they could in this way protect Jesus from some of the pressures brought upon him by the press of the multitude?
Did they think the little children were unimportant and that Jesus wouldn t want to be bothered with them? IV. When Jesus saw what was happening he called the disciples to him and told them: A. The actions of the disciples moved Jesus with indignation!... with sore displeasure! 1. Be it far from us today to keep anyone from truly coming to Jesus. 2. To stand between anyone and Jesus is to bring his wrath and indignation upon ourselves. B. The disciples had totally misunderstood the mind of Christ. How often do we misunderstand the mind of Christ? C. Suffer the little children (very young babies) and forbid them not to come unto me. D. To such belongs the kingdom of heaven. E. Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no way enter therein. How do little children receive the kingdom? 1. faith 2. trust 3. humility 4. freedom from malice, grudges (Coffman) 5. obedience
5 F. Turlington wrote, The kingdom does not belong to the mighty, the strong, the influential; it belongs to the weak, the insignificant and the unimportant. G. Some qualities of children are not typical of the kingdom. Matthew 11:16-17, But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. V. Jesus took them in his arms, laid his hands on the little children and blessed them. A. Jesus love for little children is here shown to be spontaneous and abundant! B. Jesus love for these babies is a thing of beauty, love and concern. (Coffman) C. Don t worry about little children s souls who die. Jesus will without exception take them in his arms and eternally bless them! Note: Notice the emotions attributed to Jesus on this occasion: indignation, sore displeasure and tender love. VI. Jesus then departed from that place and went his way.
6 Christ Blesses Little Children Questions 1. Little children were brought to Jesus in hope that Jesus would: (1) and (2). 2. The disciples rebuked the people who were seeking to bring their children to Jesus? When have we, by word or act, stood between those seeking Jesus and the Lord? 3. The disciples had totally misunderstood the mind of Christ? When have we done the same? 4. Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will not enter the kingdom. How do little children receive the kingdom?
What qualities of little children are not typical of the kingdom?
