1 Christ Foretells Death and Resurrection Matthew 16:21-23 Mark 8:31-33 Luke 9:22

2 Texts: Matthew 16:21-23, Jesus First Clear Prediction of his Death 21. From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mark 8:31-33, 31. And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Luke 9:22, 22. Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.

3 Commentary: I. From the time of the confession by Simon Peter in Caesarea Philippi that Jesus was indeed the Christ (Messiah), Son of God, Son of man, Jesus began to teach (show, explain) to his disciples that he would go to Jerusalem, suffer many things of the elders, chief priests and scribes, (Sanhedrin), be killed, and on the third day/after three days be raised up from the dead. A. Psalm 16:10, For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. B. Matthew 20:17-19, And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. 1. There was an expectation that something unusual would happen on the third day following Christ s crucifixion. II. Matthew mentions the coming passion three times. A. Scriptures: 1. Matthew 16:21, From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Matthew 17:22, And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: 3. Matthew 20:17, And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, B. However, other writers indicate that Jesus spoke often of his coming death. C. Events of the suffering of Christ. 1. Death would occur in Jerusalem. 2. Death would come by his own consent. 3. Death would follow his rejection by Israel. 4. Religious leaders would be instrumental in bringing about his death. 5. Jesus would be killed, crucified, not simply die. 6. He would be condemned to death (trial.) 7. Jesus would be delivered up, betrayed. 8. Gentiles would be instrumental in his death. 9. He would be mocked, scourged and made to suffer. 10. After three days he would be resurrected.

Jesus specified in detail the events of his death. Remarkable prophecy! D. Peter and the other disciples clearly did not understand fully the nature of Christ s mission. 1. Matthew 16:23, But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. 2. Matthew 17:10, 17, 23, And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. 3. Matthew 18:21, Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times? 4. Matthew 19:10, 25, His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 5. Matthew 20:24, 25, 27, And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over

6 them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 6. Mark 8:31, 32, And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 7. Mark 9:9-12, And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. 8. Mark 9:30-32, And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him. 9. Mark 10:32-45, And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And

7 he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John. But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

8 E. In references to his sufferings and death, Jesus often spoke of himself as the Son of man. 1. Mark 8:31, And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 2. Mark 9:9, 12, 31, And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered unto the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed he shall rise the third day. 3. Mark 10:33, 45, Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. 4. Mark 14:21, The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! Good were it for that man if he had never been born.

9 III. Peter didn t like what he was hearing. He took Jesus aside and rebuked him for speaking of his suffering, death and resurrection. A. Peter said, These things will never happen to you. B. What Jesus was saying did not agree with Peter s ideas of the Messianic king nor of God s coming kingdom. C. Also, Peter could not envision his closest friend, Jesus, being so horribly treated. He could not bear to consider such a thing. D. Outspoken Peter was often variably on target and often far away from the mark. E. Peter loved Jesus and did not want him to be subjected to all this suffering. His intentions were good. His theology was wrong! F. Peter here took upon himself the role of instructor, corrector of the Lord! 1. Acts 10:14, But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. 2. Matthew 17:4, Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 3. Luke 9:33, And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for

10 thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. IV. Jesus turned to Peter and rebuked him strongly by saying, Get thee behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me. You are concerned about the things of men, not the things of God. A. Jesus called Peter Satan. How would we feel if Jesus called us Satan? 1. Peter was not satanic and depraved. 2. Peter was inadvertently tempting Jesus to do wrong, avoid the cross. B. Jesus told Peter to relinquish his role as supervisor and to resume his role as follower. 1. Jesus said these things in the hearing of all the disciples for their common good. C. From an earthly viewpoint Jesus deserved none of these things which were to befall him. D. What view did Peter have of the coming messianic kingdom? The suffering and death of the king could not be reconciled in Peter s mind with his picture of the coming kingdom. 1. Peter later understood Peter 2:24, Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should

11 live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. E. Temptations do not always come through vile and evil people. Sometimes we are tempted by good well-meaning people. F. Suffering and death were most difficult for Jesus. He didn t need Peter to trip him up, be a stumbling block. 1. Matthew 26:39, And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. V. When was Jesus buried? When was he resurrected? A. Luke 9:22, Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. B. Matthew 20:17, 19, And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. C. Matthew 12:40, For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. D. Mark 8:31, And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders,

12 and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. E. Mark 9:31, For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. F. Mark 10:34, And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

13 Christ Foretells Death and Resurrection Questions 1. From that time Jesus began to his how he must go to, many things of the, and, be, and be the day. 2. began to Jesus saying, Be it far from you,. This shall be unto you. 3. Jesus told, Get thee behind me, : thou art an unto me: for thou not the things that be of, but those that be of. 4. Jesus said he would die in by his own following his rejection by. would be in bringing about his. 5. Jesus would be,, not simply expire form natural causes. He would be,,, and made to. After days he would be resurrected. 6. do not always come through and. Sometimes we are by good, well-meaning people.
