All Catholics - teenagers and senior citizens, college students and RCIA candidates, pastors and parish councils, Catholic schoolchildren and families - will be challenged to respond to it. Part I provides a brief but compelling overview of the seven themes of Catholic social teaching and a summary of the scriptural and historical context for their development. In part II, each theme is highlighted through the living examples of six extraordinary individuals and a couple who offer insight and inspiration as they share their own commitments to promoting justice and peace in the world today. (Also available in Spanish.) Includes discussion guide. Maryknoll World Productions 2000; Narrated by Stephen De Mott, MM. Since its founding in 1946, the US Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Fort Benning, Georgia, has trained more than 60, 000 Latin American soldiers in commando tactics, psychological warfare, and military intelligence. Rarely seen footage in this documentary shows how the combat-ready SOA graduates used their guns to protect the greed of large corporations and world financial institutions. Acting on their own or under orders from their governments, the soldiers target labor organizers, human rights advocates, religious leaders and others who speak out against sweatshops and enterprises of greed that exploit the country s people and resources. SOA: Guns and Greed presents a powerful statement from students, labor leaders, veterans and church people involved in nonviolent protests to close the School of the Americas. 4 SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER V VHS (22 min.) Young - No description. Law; Racism; Social Justice THE PROMISE GOES UNFULFILLED V VHS (60 min.) 2000; Young - This video concentrates on the African American Catholic story in the Diocese of Belleville, Illinois during the middle of the 20th century. This was a complicated and anxiety-ridden time for both the US and the Catholic Church. For centuries prejudice and racism had been ignored. Soon after 1950, these difficult issues became a primary focus for the entire country. Racism, prejudice, bigotry and ethnic conflict have historically been fueled by economic struggles. Skin color only deepens the divide. During the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950s and 60s, many communities made headlines, including Cairo, Illinois (in the southern-most part of the Diocese of Belleville, and Catholic priests and religious women and men challenged the community and all Christians to look for new ways to effect social justice. (Study Guide.) Faith; African-American; Bishop Wilton D. Gregory; Racism; Prejudice THE SHADOW OF HATE: A HISTORY OF INTOLERANCE IN AMERICA V VHS (40 min.); Charles Guggenheim 1995; He didn t look like one of us. To many residents of Atlanta in 1913, this was reason enough to suspect Leo Frank of murder. For some, it was reason enough to hang him. It s a story as old as humanity - pointing the finger at those who don t look or act or think like we do. Produced by three-time Academy Award winner Charles Guggenheim, The Shadow of Hate spans three centuries to examine this country s ongoing struggle to live up to its ideals of liberty, equality, and justice for all. Through documentary footage and eyewitness reports, viewers are given a powerful perspective on historical events from the ordinary people who lived through them. Closed Captioned; Social Issues; Racism STILL REACHING FOR THE PROMISED LAND V VHS (60 min.) 2000; Young - This video is a closer look at how, as members of the Body of Christ, Catholics in the Diocese of Belleville are living fully the gospel message of Jesus by reaching out to all people and ministering to their spiritual and material needs. It is about hope, a steadfast and unrelenting faith in God, and the ongoing struggle of a community of African American Catholics to remain Catholic. (Study Guide.) Faith; African-American; Bishop Wilton D. Gregory; Racism; Prejudice 4

5 WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED V VHS (90 min.) Vision Video 2001; Young - Many documentaries have been made about the American Civil Rights Movement. But for the first time the movement is examined in depth from the perspective of African-American churches, which played pivotal roles during this amazing period of US history. Serving as the critical and strategic centers, these churches also provided indispensable moral and spiritual support to the movement. On occasion, they became vanguards of the very struggle itself. Built on testimonies of pastors, activists, church members and other participants, the video recalls the events in four key churches, providing spiritual - as well as historical - perspective on their roles in the movement to end racial inequality in America. The principle participants in the key events, when asked to discuss the spiritual dimension, gladly opened up and poured forth a fuller view of the movement than the secular news organizations were ever able to grasp. Was God present in these events? Listen to these authentic accounts from those who were there and are convinced He was. Civil Rights; African-American; Racism; Multicultural; Justice WAITING FOR DELIVERANCE V (60 min.) 2000; Young - Waiting for Deliverance looks at the history in which racism and prejudice are rooted. Academics and local historians discuss early settlers and events that set this area of Southern Illinois apart. Catholics from the Diocese of Belleville share their own stories as well as stories that have been passed down from generation to generation as the African American community has struggled to remain Catholic. (Study Guide.) Faith; African-American; Bishop Wilton D. Gregory; Racism; Prejudice Option for the Poor and Vulnerable THE OPTION FOR THE POOR & VULNERABLE C VHS (60 min.) Poor and vulnerable people have a special place in Catholic social teaching. Poverty; Social Teaching; Social Justice THE GLOBAL BANQUET: POLITICS OF FOOD V VHS (50 min.) 7 AMONG THE PEOPLE: FACING POVERTY IN AMERICA V VHS (53 min.) Catholic Campaign for Human Development 2002; Riveting and inspiring, this video takes audiences below the poverty line, into an uncertain state where more than 34 million people across the nation are struggling to survive. But far from a descent into bitter despair, this is a journey of hope - and a moving portrayal of how the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is assisting projects in impoverished communities throughout the United States to break free of the brutal cycle of poverty. From migrant farm laborers in the fields of Oregon to ex-convicts on the streets of South Central LA, from drought-relief initiatives along the Rio Grande to welfareto-work successes in the South Bronx, Among the People presents the poignant, compelling and ultimately heartening stories of how grass roots groups and CCHD are striving toward long-term solutions by attacking poverty s causes together. 8 Call to Family, Community, and Participation THE CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY & PARTICIPATION C VHS (60 min.) The human person is not only sacred, but social. We realize our dignity and rights in relationship with others in a community. Family; Social Teaching; Relationships BRING DOWN THE WALLS V VHS (12 min.) Lumen Catechetical Consultants, Inc. 1993; Young - Focuses on the heritage, principles, and practices of Catholic social teaching. This creative yet practical show brings to life the themes and reflections of the recent U.S. Bishops statement- A Century of Social Teaching: A Common Heritage, A Continuing Challenge. It can be an important tool in the Church s continuing effort to educate and motivate Catholics about the social dimensions of their faith. Pastoral Letters/Bishop s Statements; Social Teaching FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE DV DVD (30 min.) USCCB Publishing; How is faithful citizenship a matter of conscience. Three ten-minute segments show how everyone can faithfully participate in the political process. Each segment helps Catholics learn how they can form their consciences in order to make important public choices. The three segments are (1) English for adults ( A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE ), (2) Spanish for adults ( UN ASUNTO DE CONSCIENCIA ), and (3) English for teens ( GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ). Citizenship and Religion FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP: A MESSAGE FROM THE US CATHOLIC BISHOPS V VHS (10 min.) United States Catholic Conference (USCC) 2000; Inviting all Catholics to share our values and raise our voices, Cardinal Roger Mahoney and Bishop Joseph Fiorenza join political commentators and parishioners in this video presentation based on the 1999 bishops statement of the same name. Encouraging all citizens to be informed, active and responsible participants in the political process, the bishops ask Catholics to bring their moral values and principles to the debate. By evaluating political platforms and issues in light of the principles of Catholic social teaching, we as Catholics can work together for a brighter future that benefits the common good. This video is a wonderful resource and discussion starter for diocesan and parish leaders. (Discussion Guide.) Leadership Formation; Political Issues; Archbishop Roger Mahony; Justice 8

9 Solidarity WATER FOR LIFE DV DVD (18 min.) Catholic Relief Services 2006; Water for Life illustrates the work of Catholic Relief Services in partnership with the National Council of Catholic Women in responding to the critical need for water projects in developing countries. The greatest humanitarian crisis in the world today is food and water scarcity issues that threaten the peace and security of most developing nations. Social Teaching; Environmental GLOBAL SOLIDARITY: A FRAMEWORK FOR PARISHES V VHS (14 min.) United States Catholic Conference (USCC) 1998; Helping believers connect the Gospel to the world in which we live is one of the greatest challenges parishes face. As our world grows increasingly interdependent, the suffering if our sisters and brothers in other lands touches us more immediately and deeply. As members of a universal Church, Catholics are uniquely called to respond. The U.S. bishops statement Called to Global Solidarity: International Challenges for U.S. Parishes offers support for U.S. parishes to act on the gospel mandate to care for all God s people, wherever they live. This video summarizes this statement in a concise and compelling manner. Gospel Message; Activism; World Affairs Rights and Responsibilities LIFE, DIGNITY, RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HUMAN PERSON C VHS (60 min.) The test of every institution or policy is whether it enhances or threatens human life and human dignity. Responsibility/Discipline; Social Teaching; Human Rights; Social Justice OVERVIEW & BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE C VHS (59 min.) 1993; In this introductory segment, Fr. Crosby examines some of the isms and ideologies that intertwine to create and maintain injustice. Crosby explores the relationship between discipleship, justice and reconciliation. Poverty; Parish Issues; Social Issues; Social Justice; Discipleship 9

10 THE CHURCH S ROLE IN THE SOCIAL JUSTICE AGENDA C VHS (59 min.) 1993; Fr. Crosby traces the history of Catholic Social Teaching, raising the possibility that - when lived by the people of God in the form of compassionate justice - this body of teaching might create the voice that calls national and global infrastructures to conversion. Telecourses; Church Issues; Social Justice CATHOLICISM & SOCIAL JUSTICE V VHS (28 min.) Young - What is the moral responsibility of Church in social, political and economic orders? This and other questions are put forth and answered by Fr. McBrien. Catholicism; Political Issues; Responsibility/ Discipline; Economics; Church Issues; Morality; Social Justice; Rev. Richard P. McBrien Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers THE DIGNITY OF WORK & THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS C VHS (60 min.) University of Notre Dame; Immigration is a complex issue that is changing t he face of cultures worldwide. In the United States it is often controversial with many social, economic, political, and even religious implications. In the debate, what often gets lost are the human issues at stake. Dying to Live is a profound look at the human face of the migrant. It explores who these people are, why they leave their homes and what they face in their journey. Drawing on the insights of Pulitzer Prize winning photographers, theologians, church and congressional leaders, activists, musicians and the immigrants themselves, this film explores the places of conflict, pain and hope along the US-Mexico border. It is a reflection on the human struggle for a more dignified life and the search to find God in the midst of it all. Social Issues; Immigrants THE TIES THAT BIND V VHS (56 min.)
