1 PEACE AND JUSTICE PRAYER CALENDAR FOR SEPTEMBER 2018 Season of Creation September 1 October 5 (Global Catholic Climate Movement) Hunger Action Month (Feeding America) Suicide Prevention Month September 1 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation (Vatican) Pray for the grace to reaffirm our personal vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which He has entrusted to our care and to implore His help for the protection of creation as well as His pardon for the sin against the world in which we live. Pope Francis September 2 Hindu Feast of Krishna Janmashtami As Hindus around the world celebrate the appearance of their deity Krishna on Earth, pray for tolerance among believers of different religions. 2 September 3 Labor Day (U.S.) Feast of Pope St. Gregory the Great, patron of teachers, students and musicians Pray that all workers will have adequate compensation and a safe work environment. Pray for teachers, students and musicians as they begin a new school year. September 4 September 5 Pray that the concluding sessions of the 115th U.S. Congress enacts legislation that protects the common good and considers the needs of the most vulnerable, especially those of low income, the elderly and immigrants. Feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta, who died in 1997, patron of World Youth Day International Day of Charity (UN) Pray for pilgrims preparing to go to Panama for the 2019 World Youth Day. Pray in gratitude for those who help and provide resources for those in need. September 6 Jane Addams, suffragette, peace activist and social worker, born in 1860 Pray for more women in leadership roles in government and church. September 7 Pray for the one out of eight Americans who are struggling with hunger. Page 2 of 9

3 September 8 Feast of the Birth of Mary International Literacy Day (UN) Pray for the elimination of illiteracy by the year The UN estimates there are 104 million illiterate youth in the world. September 9 Rosh Hashanah begins (Happy New Year to our Jewish friends!) Feast of St. Peter Claver National Grandparents Day (U.S.) Pray for peace in Israel. Pray for the end of racism. Pray for all grandparents, especially those caring for their grandchildren because of acts of violence, immigration and poverty. September 10 World Suicide Prevention Day (World Health Organization) There are 123 suicides each day in the U.S. Pray for those considering suicide, that they may get the help they need in time. September 11 Patriot Day of service and remembrance, in memory of those killed in the terrorist attacks of 2001 Pray for the end of terrorist attacks worldwide. Page 3 of 9

4 September 12 Feast of the Holy Name of Mary UN Day for South-South Cooperation Feast of Muharram: Sunni Muslims celebrate the first month of the Muslim New Year with fasting Pray for all those on death row, especially Ruben Gutierrez, scheduled for execution in Texas, and for the victims and their families. Pray for peace and cooperation for the people of South America. Pray for an end to Islamophobia. September 13 Pray that the young people of Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries. Pope Francis Monthly Intention September 14 Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Encyclical on Work, St. Pope John Paul II (1981) Pray for those who are unemployed, that they will obtain jobs with adequate compensation. September Campaign Nonviolence Week of Actions to promote a culture of peace Page 4 of 9

5 September 15 Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows International Day of Democracy (UN) Pray for mothers who mourn the loss of children because of violent acts. Pray for the success of the International Coastal Clean-Up Day. September Clean Up the World Weekend: September 16 International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (UN) Mexican Independence Day Catechetical Sunday Pray that governments and individuals work to protect our planet, especially the ozone layer. Pray for all those who teach others about God. September 17 Feast of St. Hildegard of Bingen U.S. Constitution Day (Citizenship Day): Delegates signed the Constitution in 1787 Frances Warde, RSM, died in 1884 Pray for new citizens of the U.S. and that all citizens who are the age to vote exercise that right and those seeking citizenship may attain that goal. September 18 Yom Kippur, day of prayer, fasting and repentance World Water Monitoring Day (UN) Pray for the Jewish people. Page 5 of 9

6 September 19 Paulo Freire, educator and philosopher, born in 1921 Pray in gratitude for the gift of water. Pray for all those experiencing oppression and for the conversion of the oppressors. September 20 Feast of St. Andrew Kim Taegon and companions, Korean martyrs Pray for the Korean people. September September 21 Pray for the success of the Campaign Nonviolence National Convergence, March and Rally in Washington, D.C. Feast of St. Matthew International Day of Peace (UN) Theme: The Right to Peace The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70 Pray for world peace and human rights for everyone. 7 September 22 Fall Equinox World Car Free Day Hans Scholl, founder of the Nazi resistance group White Roses, born in 1918 Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln, 1862 Pray in gratitude for peace makers and all those who resist violence and hate. Pray for the end of racism. September 23 Jewish Feast of Sukkot (Feast of the Tabernacles) International Day of Sign Language (UN) Pray for all those recovering from natural disasters: fires, earthquakes, flooding, and drought. September 24 Feast of Our Lady of Mercy: Happy Mercy Day! Pray for all those who carry on the charism of Catherine McAuley. September 25 September 26 Pray for the victims of domestic and clerical abuse and a healing of the church community. International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (UN) Feast of Blessed Pope Paul VI World Environmental Health Day Pray for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Pray for the end of the death penalty and for Troy Clark, scheduled for execution in Texas, the victims and their families. Page 7 of 9

8 September 27 Feast of St. Vincent de Paul World Tourism Day (UN) Pray for all those on death row, especially Daniel Acker, scheduled for execution in Texas, the victim and their families. Pray for all Vincentians and those who carry on the Vincentian charism. Pray for the safety of tourists. September 28 Feast of St. Lorenzo Ruiz and companions, martyrs World Rabies Day (UN) International Day for Universal Access to Information (UN) Pray for the people of the Philippines and Japan. St. Lorenzo was the first Filipino saint and a missionary in Japan. Pray for the victims of rabies. September 29 Feast of Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael Venerable Catherine McAuley, RSM, born in 1778 Pray for all communicators of news and information. Pray for all Sisters of Mercy, associates and companions as they carry on Catherine s mission to those who are in need. Page 8 of 9
