5 - Church Newsroom - IN THAILAND, HUMANITARIAN ARM OF CHURCH RESPONDS TO WORST FLOODING IN 50 YEARS ADRA distributes thousands of emergency care packages, cases of water 28 Oct 2011, Silver Spring, Maryland, United States ANN staff The humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is responding to the worst flooding Thailand has seen in half a century. More than a third of the Southeast Asian country is currently flooded following months of unexpectedly heavy monsoon rains. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Thailand has already distributed nearly 2,000 emergency care packages to affected families. Each package includes food staples, drinking water and medicines. ADRA Thailand also provided an additional 1,500 cases of water to residents of remote districts, where families are stranded without electricity or supplies. Water flowing south toward the Gulf of Thailand has already killed close to 400 people and displaced more than 100,000, the Associated Press said. Tens of thousands of Bangkok residents are fleeing the capital ahead of waist-high water, reports indicate. Adventists in the region are reporting damage to homes and property, but no loss of life. The church's university, located two hours outside of Bangkok on higher elevation, remains safe from floodwaters, said Simon Siew, a church official for the Southeast Asia Union Mission. Church leaders are concerned that Thailand Adventist Mission headquarters -- as well as many of the church's nearby schools, churches and a hospital -- are vulnerable to flooding in the coming days. The Thai government is expected to open area flood control dikes to relieve surging canals and rivers. "There is an urgent need right now for the Thailand Adventist Mission to procure two boats to help with the flood relief efforts," Siew said in an this week. "Please pray for our folks there as they struggle to go on with their lives in the face of this horrible natural disaster." ADRA officials in Thailand are expected to reassess the situation in the coming weeks, providing additional assistance as necessary.

9 URGENT: EAST AFRICA DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR PROGRAM ENDS SOON I am both Chair of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia Board and President of the Australian Union Conference with a matter of urgency. The Adventist Church, through the work of ADRA has an extraordinary opportunity to change the lives of some of the 13.3 million people affected by the unprecedented drought currently gripping the Horn of Africa. Thanks to the Australian Government s Dollar for Dollar program, any donation given to ADRA Australia s East Africa Drought Appeal will be matched by AusAID. But this is only available until November 30. I am concerned that the response of the church, and the Australian public, to this mega-disaster has been slow and limited. We may not be able to get the entire Australian public behind this cause, but we do have an opportunity to inspire our church members. I believe in ADRA s ministry and the work they do extending Christ s ministry of compassion around the world. ADRA has been active distributing emergency food and water supplies in a region with no other aid agencies present. ADRA is boring new waterholes, training water management and hygiene committees in schools and communities and targeting families with malnourished children to ensure they survive this drought. But more than that, ADRA has committed to the region for three years the rebuilding process will be as long as it is important. This is a commitment they have made in faith, but they need our help yours, mine, and the churches. I urge you to visit ADRA Australia s website ( and their Facebook page ( They have stories, pictures and video clips that you can share with your church. As Australian Adventists we have the opportunity to make a real difference in what is perhaps the most need-filled region of the world. Any donation given to ADRA Australia s East Africa Drought Appeal will be doubled by the Australian Government but only until November 30. This is an extraordinary opportunity and one that we need to take up.

10 The Armour--Loins Girt About with Truth Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:13-17 God has provided abundant means for successful warfare against the evil that is in the world. The Bible is the armory where we may equip for the struggle. Our loins must be girt about with truth. Our breastplate must be righteousness. The shield of faith must be in our hand, the helmet of salvation on our brow; and with the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, we are to cut our way through the obstructions and entanglements of sin. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. Luke 12: Food For Thought - We are to wear the armor of God and not of man, we must be careful not to miss the admonition to wear all of the articles God provides. Ephesians 6:11 cautions, Put on the whole armour of God, and Ephesians 6:13 declares, Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God. This is where many Christians fail. They take some of the armor, but forget one or two parts of the suit, and pay an eternal price for their neglect. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul attaches a spiritual association to seven implements of earthly armor. Let s consider each of these articles of defense one by one to see what we can learn. 11 - Your Health & You - Reducing your risk of cancer How Diet Can Reduce Your Risk Of Cancer Australian research has compared the rates of cancer in native-born Australians with Southern European migrants. The migrants had low rates of cancer of the bowel, rectum and pancreas. Their diet included a high intake of fibre and antioxidants from fruit, vegetables, legumes, pasta and bread. They also used olive oil freely in their cooking. Conversely, native-born Australians have high rates of pancreas, bowel and rectum cancer. Researchers found that the longer the migrants lived in Australia, the more their cancer rates increase, approaching those of native-born Australians. After an average residence of 16 years, southern European migrants suffered a similar level of cancer to Australians. The Reverse Pattern Japan has a very high rate of stomach cancer, while the USA has a low rate. Japanese who migrated to the USA, in successive generations, dropped their incidence of stomach cancer from very high to very low, even though there was no inter-marriage with Americans. Unfortunately, they also developed the higher rate of bowel and breast cancer. How To Protect Yourself It is estimated that our daily diet plays a role in 35-40% of avoidable cancers, supplying both promoters and inhibitors to the process of cancer development. 1. Cut back on fats, especially saturated (animal) fats. There is good evidence from animal and human studies that excess fat and sugar increase the risk of bowel cancer. Especially, cut back on red meat. There is good evidence that red meat and processed meat are a risk factor in bowel cancer, and also in pancreas, lung, oesophagus and uterus cancers. 2. Eat more fruit and vegetables. Combined studies show diets high in fruit and vegetables reduce the risk of bowel cancer. The effect was greatest in those who increased their intake from very low levels. 3. Avoid overweight. Obesity raises the chances of hormone-dependent cancers of the breast, cervix, endometrium and prostate. A Swedish study of 2000 obesity surgery patients, comparing them with similar patients who did not have surgery, found that the rate of cancer in the women who had surgery was almost half that of the no-surgery group after 11 years. An analysis of several studies shows that increased body weight is linked to several types of cancer. An increase of BMI by 5 points was associated with oesophagus, thyroid, bowel and kidney cancers in men; and uterus, gallbladder, oesophageal and kidney cancer in women.

12 1. Eat more fibre. Fibre plays a key role in the prevention of cancer of the bowel. Wheat bran is particularly effective through its laxative effect. One of fibre s actions is to speed the transit of food through the digestive system. This lessens the contact time of any ingested carcinogen with the inner lining of the bowel. 2. Minimise salt-cured and smoked foods like smoked fish, hot dogs, corned beef, bacon and ham. These foods contain nitrates and nitrites, compounds which in the stomach can form nitrosamines. These are among the most potent agents of stomach cancer. 3. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol particularly if combined with smoking is associated with cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus and rectum (especially for beer consumers). It is more harmful for women than for men. In a study of 1.3 million women in the UK, alcohol drinkers had higher risk of cancers of the breast, oesophagus, throat, liver and rectum. Every 1 drink per day contributes to about 15 cancers per 1000 women. One researcher concluded: There is no safe level of alcohol consumption. The European Cancer Conference of 2007 reported on 70,000 women over 7 years. It showed that 1-2 drinks per day increased breast cancer risk by 10%; and >3 drinks per day increased it by 30%. There was no difference seen between beer, wine and spirits. 4. Minimise browned and charred foods. Cooking meat, chicken and fish to produce charring can create potent end-products which are carcinogenic, especially in the bowel. So when grilling, barbecuing or toasting, do not produce overdone meat or burnt toast and you can cut the risk of bowel and rectum cancer. 5. Eat natural; avoid supplements. Antioxidants and vitamins, such as Vitamin C and carotenoids, are protective against cancer, when eaten in foods. However, when taken in supplement form, they don t protect as well, and some are actually harmful. Among almost 300,000 men followed for 5 years, it was found that those using daily multivitamins and other supplements, had 32% more prostate cancer than those not on supplements. They also had twice as many deaths from prostate cancer. Vitamin E supplements were found to increase prostate cancer risk by 1.6 times among over 35,000 men followed for 7-12 years. Another study found that Vitamin D from natural sources did reduce the risk of breast cancer. Conclusion To reduce cancer risk, eat less fat, in particular animal fats, less meat, less grilled and fried meat and fish, eliminate alcohol, maintain an ideal body weight, exercise regularly, avoid supplements and consume more fibre-rich cereals, fruit and vegetables. 15 November 5th - Weekly Devotional - THE GRATITUDE OF THE REDEEMED The King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matthew chapter 25 verse 40) Every action of ours in befriending God's people will be rewarded as done unto Himself. What satisfaction will every reaper have, when the clear, musical voice of Jesus shall be heard, saying, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." "Enter thou into the joy of thy lord." The Redeemer is glorified because He has not died in vain. With glad, rejoicing hearts, those who have been colaborers with God see of the travail of their soul for perishing, dying sinners, and are satisfied. The anxious hours they have spent, the perplexing circumstances they have had to meet, the sorrow of heart because some refused to see and receive the things which make for their peace, are forgotten. The self-denial they have practiced in order to support the work, is remembered no more. As they look upon the souls they sought to win to Jesus, and see them saved, eternally saved--monuments of God's mercy and of a Redeemer's love--there ring through the arches of heaven shouts of praise and thanksgiving. There is a heaven before us, and among its inhabitants there will be no strife. We shall greet the holy family of the redeemed, and hear the words of Christ, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." We shall touch our golden harps, and heaven will ring with rich music. We shall cast our glittering crowns at His feet, and give glory to Him who has overcome in our behalf. There may be some things here that we do not understand. Some things in the Bible may appear to us mysterious, because they are beyond our finite comprehension.
