3 There was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas, which means Son of Encouragement. Acts 4:36. Thank you for responding to our Parish Survey. Your concern for the parish is encouraging and the points you expressed are honest and helpful. Here are some more of your opinions. We pray for the grace to move from answers to action. I go to mass just about every Sunday because my mother instilled in me & my brothers respect for God's church. Maybe it would be a good idea to have kids go with their "Parents" to Religious Education classes once in a while, it's a tough question to answer. / I sing & I still have a band. My wife would like me to join the choir, maybe, we'll see. Adult education programs, possibly on the meaning of the Mass and its different seasons. Social gatherings for our young adults in the year bracket. Fr. Charles Mangano has music evenings of reflection that many appeal to our young adults and older. They are very inspiring for the whole family. Priests give well prepared sermons. / There is a great variety of programs available to belong to a ministry in the Parish. More teaching on Marriage & the Sacraments. Prayer & Spirituality of Saints. Teach children in CCD & school how to pray & follow Jesus - no fluff - real theology. / Meet & greet parishioners before Mass especially converts & new parishioners. / More explanation on the domestic church & how important it is that children learn to pray. Families come together at the Mass to witness to each other. / Spiritual book library - donated books " listening sessions" during the day. Can't hear clearly in back of the church. Have catechism (religious ed.) for the children. / Keep the family and Saturday evening Masses. Yes, shorter Masses / Sometimes it's hard to understand a priest. / Earlier evening masses in the winter- 4:00 PM & 6:00 PM lots of churches do. Some people cannot make it to mass every week, however, when they do attend, the sermon is only about what terrible people/ catholic's they are, they are not encouraged to come back. Ushers should wear uniformed jackets with church logo & name tags. I would like to see St. Barnabas provide activities for young adults (21-30). Activities similar to those provided by Faith on Tap, but in the local community. / I would be more inclined to participate in the parish ministries if there were action oriented ministries. Such as Thanksgiving Mass Thursday, November 26th 6:30 AM & 9:30 AM Habitat for Humanity. Clean-ups at Jones Beach, volunteering at Bethany House, Regina Residence, events at Senior Centers, Operation Christmas Child, Peanut Butter Jelly Gang. / To be more welcoming, host dinners and parish picnics. More parish activities/events such as: block parties, parish carnivals. It would be great to have a parish newsletter to let people know what the parish has been doing. There is one big void that exists & that is Evangelization as our Holy Father talks about it. We need programs for adult Faith Formation/ constant ongoing Adult Faith Program. / We are fortunate to have priests from foreign countries to fill the void in vocations.

4 Pastor of St. Barnabas 12 noon Mass November 22 All are Welcome Next Sunday, November 22, I will be installed as Pastor of St. Barnabas. I thank all of you for the very warm welcome you have extended to me since July and I hope to be of service to you over the next few years. People often wonder what do priests do after we say Mass. This reflection might provide an answer. Its title: But, Father, what do you actually do? Leader of people, wisest of guides; diplomat, elder, who never takes sides. Inspirer, Confessor, forgiver of sins; caretaker, cleaner and emptier of bins, Welcome baptizer of infants in arms; counter of candles and filler of forms. Father and teacher, chaplain to schools; chairman of councils, maker of rules. Parish accountant and administrator, typist and banker, and news duplicator. Signer of Mass cards, reference composer, certificate writer and passport endorser. Digger of gardens, inspector of drains, checker of roofs every time that it rains. Re-designer of churches, to fill empty pews, re-glazer of windows, repairer of loos. Visitor, caller, knocker on doors, target of gossips and cadgers and bores. Chaplain to hospital, long or short stay, 'Please don t forget, my Mum's in for the day.' The doctors and nurses all merit a call, smile kindly at everyone keep on the ball! Sayer of Masses and liturgy leader, celebrant, sacristan, cantor and reader. Marshall of servers, collectors and choir; hymn books and papers both seller and buyer. Presider of Eucharist, calm as you like - 'but did I remember to switch on the mike?' Celebrant of Masses, devotions and prayers, patient receiver of everyone's cares. Marriage encounter and parish renewal; Journeys of Faith and liturgical jewels. Shepherd to prayer groups, prophet and pastor; spiritual director and guru and master. Help of the sick and anointer and healer; support for the dying and final appealer. Conductor of funerals, comfort of mourners, called to give solace to even the scorners, Minister of marriage, the guide of young love, adviser of couples who need help from above. Provider of insight into all life connubial; Collector of forms for marriage tribunal. Man of prayer, reflection, study and thought, but still finding time for the news and the sport. Something for everyone, you might exclaim, but when things go wrong who is it they blame? Volunteer Thank You Party Saturday, November 21st Pastor Installation Mass Sunday, November 12 Noon Thanksgiving Mass Thursday, November 26th 9:30 AM First Sunday Advent Sunday, November 29th Sisters of Charity Renewal of Vows December 12 Noon Holy Year of Mercy Begins December 8th Christmas Pageant December 3:00 PM Lessons & Carols December 7:00

Second Collection Next Weekend Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Home Missions CCHD was founded by the bishops of the United States when they realized that the lives of those in need would not improve until the systems and policies that keep people in poverty were changed. For over 40 years, CCHD has funded community groups that seek justice and create lasting change. Fight poverty in America. Support CCHD. 6 We are still in need of donations Thanksgiving is a very special time for each of us, as we celebrate and give thanks to God for family, friends and the many blessings we share. Still, there are those among us who will need our help to make their own Thanksgiving a happy one. Saint Barnabas has a rich and generous tradition of sharing its blessings with those in need by providing Food Baskets at Thanksgiving. So, this year again, we invite you to consider donating one or two of the following items: A gift certificate to purchase a turkey Fresh, frozen or canned produce Cranberry Sauce, Stuffing mix Juice & cider, A tin of cookies Pancake mix & syrup, Coffee & tea May God Bless your generosity. Small Christian Communities Small Christian Communities are groups of people who gather to read the scripture for the coming Sunday, reflect and share their thoughts. Each group decides where to meet (someone s house), when to meet (time, day, how often) and receives a monthly guide for each person with suggested reflections for the readings. Bibles will be provided as needed. If you would like more information, please call the rectory and leave a message for Terri Lyons. Friendly Seniors The Friendly Seniors will meet Tuesday, November 17th at 1:00 PM in the Holy Family Chapel. Adults aged 55 and over are welcome. Our talk for the evening is entitled 33 To Life - Kevin and Giorgio s Miracle Story. Our speaker, Kevin Becker, will share with us his story of how Pier Giorgio s intercession saved his life. On August 26, 2011, Kevin fell 13 feet off of the roof of his college apartment. Kevin's fall left him in a coma with multiple fractures to his skull - in fact, every lobe of his brain sustained injuries, with only a 30% change of survival. While he was in a coma, Kevin's family rallied to his side both and some e began a novena to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. The next day he awoke and gave the thumbs up sign! Come and hear Kevin s story. 10 November 15, 2015 Hi everyone! This is the page for St Barnabas Life Teen. I m Peggy Harnisch your youth minister!! Hi Everyone, As we wind down the Liturgical year I thought it might be nice to spend some time a few weeks beforehand to think about gratitude. We will certainly think about this at Thanksgiving, but why not spend some time before thinking about some of the things we re grateful for? Dates to Remember! Friday, November 20th Holy Hour/Dodgeball Middle and High School students permission slips needed Let s think about our lives. Pick something you take for granted and think about how thankful you are for it. Let s start this week by thinking of family. Do we think about those in our lives who are there for us when no one else might be? I know it can be easy to take family for granted, but let s spend some time this being grateful for family. It may be taking us wherever we need to be, waking us up in the morning when we aren t so happy or buying us those things we have to have. Maybe you have a sibling you don t appreciate at this time. Being grateful may mean sitting down and having a conversation or playing a game with them. For some of us it may mean our extended family. Is there someone we need to call because it s been too long? See what happens if you start this week everyday with being thankful for family! Have a blessed week! Peggy If you are an adult who might enjoy working with teens, maybe you would like to be a part of our Core team! Peggy for information!! We need you! stbarnabasyouthministry@gmail.com
