1 John Lesson 1 Workbook Real Verses Fake GETTING STARTED 1. What words describe what a real Christian looks like? 2. What words describe someone who is faking his or her faith? 1 John 1:5-2:2 1. What is the first test that John gives us to show if we are real in our faith? 2. What is our assertion of a real Christian? 3. What do you think it means to walk in the light? 4. What is the second test that John gives us to show if we are real in our faith? 5. What is is the third and final test that John gives to distinguish real Christians from fake Christians?
6. What is the difference between the second claim and the the third claim? Homework Memorize 1 John 1:9 Examine your walk with God. Are you a real follower of Christ? If not, confess your sins to God who will faithfully forgive us. Then turn and walk in the light of God's Word. Remember that walking in spiritual darkness will bring us great pain. (Separation from God, divorce, unplanned pregnancy, drug addiction, etc.)
1 John Lesson 2 Workbook Know That You Know 1 John 2: What areas of your life is God calling you to bring under obedience to Him? 2. Are there things that you do now that you wouldn t do if you were not following Christ? 1 John 2:6 1. How did Jesus treat people? How did He handle temptation? How did He respond to those who hated Him? 2. What are some areas in your life where you feel that you are following Jesus' example? 3. What is one area in your life where you are not following Jesus? 1 John 2: What types of people are the hardest for you to get along with in church, school, etc?
2. Why is it so hard to love some people? Homework Memorize 1 John 2:12 Prepare for the challenges you will face next week in regard to your Christian walk. Live a life that imitates Jesus' life.
1 John Lesson 3 Workbook No Room for Gray 1 John 3: What is the definition of sin according to this passage? 2. What/who is the origin of sin? 3. What is the definition of righteousness according to this passage? 4. What/who is the origin of righteousness? MAKING IT REAL 1. How do you downplay the sin in your life? Honestly. Do you: blame your sin on someone else, pretend it s not a big deal, hide it and hope no one notices, focus only on your positives and hope they outweigh the negatives, lie and cover up your sin at any cost, or point out someone s flaws which are worse? 2. What should we do when we don t successfully practice righteousness? 3. What is the proper response that a Christian should make when he or she sins?
4. Are there any areas of your life where you have stubbornly refused to let Jesus be Lord? What are they? Workbook Activity Spend just a few minutes reflecting on your life. What aspect of your behavior looks more like practicing lawlessness than practicing righteousness? Spend your time asking the Spirit to show you one way that you are not allowing Jesus to be Lord of your life. Write this confession down below. Write it as a letter to God. This will be between just you and God so be completely honest and as thorough as possible. Try to include the following elements in your letter. What is your sin specifically? Is there a certain time or place where you fall into this lawlessness? Why do you struggle with this issue? Did someone teach or lead you into this sin? Do you think this is something that Jesus can help you overcome? What are you specifically asking Jesus to do? What kind of path would Jesus lead you on without this sin? Homework Memorize 1 John 3:9 Take an honest look at your life: Are you trying to play both sides of life or are you all in for God? Pray for wisdom, pray to be raised up in truth, and pray for forgiveness of your sins.
1 John Lesson 4 Workbook All You Need is God 1 John 4: What way has God personally shown you love? 2. In what ways has He shown love to the world around you? 3. What is the way that this passage says love has been shown to you? Romans 5: How often is someone willing to die for a righteous person? 2. How often do you think someone would be willing to die for an unrighteous man or woman? 3. How does God demonstrate His love for us? 1 John 4: What is required for God to live in us and for us to live in God?
2. Why are we able to love? 3. What command does God give us regarding love in these passages? 4. Which is harder, to love God or to love those around you? Why do you say this? Homework Memorize 1 John 4:7 Ask God for a heart to love others, especially for those that look or act differently from yourself. Don t just pray about loving others, take practical actions to show godly love to those around you.
1 John Lesson 5 Workbook The Marks of a Believer 1 John 5: In these passages, what criteria does John give for being born of God? 2. According to verse 1, a true Christian believes what? 3. How can you know you believe, according to verse 2? 4. What are you supposed to love? 5. According to verse 3, how do you know if you love God? MAKING IT REAL 1. What do you get if you have love and belief, but no obedience? 2. What happens if you have obedience and belief, but no love?
3. What about obedience and love, but no belief? 4. Are these combinations even possible? 5. What is the result when all three are not an active part of your life? 6. Have you ever experienced this? Homework Memorize 1 John 5:1 Ask God to stretch your belief, love, and obedience. Read the book of 1 John in one sitting. To do this, you will need to choose a minute time slot somewhere during your week.
1 John Lesson 6 Workbook Idolatry 1 John 5: Why do you think John ends the book the way he does? 2. Do you think it is appropriate for John to mention idols, when he hasn t mentioned them at all during this book? Glory Revelation 4:11 and Romans 1: Why is God the only one worthy to receive glory? 2. What happens to those who give the glory reserved for God to idols? Dedication Proverbs 5:22-23 and Proverbs 15:21 1. What happens to those who lack discipline? 2. What delights a man or woman who lacks judgment? 3. What will a man or woman of understanding do?
Sacrifice Psalm 51:17, Proverbs 15:8, and Romans 12: What type of sacrifice is pleasing to the Lord? 2. Does all sacrifice please the Lord? 3. What does the Apostle Paul tell us to do in Romans 12:1-2? Continued on next page.
Making It Real - Workbook Activity Pair up with one or two friends in class. As the teacher reads the following questions, take time to work through the answers with one another. 1. Did the Holy Spirit convict you of idolatry or another sin today? Take a few minutes and discuss this conviction. 2. What type of action does this conviction require you to take? Explain. 3. Is there anything you are glorifying, dedicated to, or sacrificing for besides God? 4. Is there a specific idol that you need to remove from your life? How will you do this? 5. What prayers will you need this week to help you remove the idols you have placed before God? Homework Memorize 1 John 5:21 Ask God to show you the idols you have placed before Him and then remove these idols from your life. This week use a concordance or to read all the passages you can find on glory, discipline, foolishness, sacrifice, and idolatry.
