1 Grade 6 Lesson 5 Key Points Advent King David Liturgical calendar King Solomon Job Materials The Perfect Role Model (Active Learning Int 1) Newspaper Advertisements Nativity picture A Child is Gonna Come from Go Sing it on the Mountain Picture of the Temple of Solomon Catechist Prayer before the lesson: All-wise God, grant me the wisdom I need to teach the children in my group each week. Enlighten me as I pray and prepare for this lesson; help me to share the truth in your Word. Amen. Before the lesson: Hand out The Perfect Role Model. 1
2 [5 min] Invite Anticipation (p. 15) Explain that December 8 th is the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This is the day we honor Mary being conceived without sin. Mary is the patron saint of America, so December 8 th is a Holy Day of Obligation when we have to attend Mass. Ask if the students have any prayer requests and pray a Hail Mary. Recite the prayer and Scripture passage on page 15 about Advent. [10 min] Discover We Look Forward (p ) Read or summarize the text about Advent. Discuss the Second Coming in pairs or as a group. o Why should we look forward to this day? o What are some things you can do in your everyday life to prepare for the Second Coming? [15 min] Advent Mosaic Hand out pictures of the nativity to the students. Have the students cut out newspaper advertisements and glue the pieces of paper onto the nativity image to make a mosaic. Play A Child is Gonna Come while the students cut and glue. Note: This is a song from this year s Christmas Cantata: Go Sing it on the Mountain. [10 min] Discover A Line of Kings (p ) After Moses led the Israelites to the Promised Land, the people wanted a king to rule over them. The prophet Samuel thought the people were foolish to want an earthly king instead of revering God as their only king, but Samuel listened to the people and anointed Saul with oil to proclaim him the first king of Israel. Read and discuss King David on pages o Why is Jesus called the Son of David? o What are some things that David and Jesus have in common? [10 min] Live - Our Catholic Life (p. 126) Read and discuss the Church liturgical year. Quiz the students based on the Liturgical Year chart on page 126 and also the Liturgical season colors (listed below). Divide the class into teams and give points for correct answers. o Advent: Purple. o Christmas: White. o Ordinary Time: Green. o Lent: Purple o Triduum: Red. o Pentecost: Red. o Easter: White. o Ordinary Time II: Green 2
3 [10 min] Discover - The Wisdom Books (p ) Show the picture of the Temple of Solomon. The layout of the temple and many of its objects are similar to our churches today. o The Tabernacle held the 10 Commandments and manna (bread) from heaven. Our tabernacle holds the Blessed Sacrament, which is also bread from heaven. o The temple had holy water fonts for priests to cleanse themselves. Our churches have holy water fonts to receive God s blessing and to remember our baptism. o The altar was a table for bread, candles and incense, like ours is today. This is a well- known story of Solomon s wisdom: two women each lay claim to being the mother of the same child. Solomon easily cut through the dispute by commanding the child to be cut in half and shared between the two. One woman promptly renounced her claim, proving that she would rather give up the child than see it killed. Solomon declared the woman who showed compassion to be the true mother, entitled to the whole child. Discuss the story of Job: Job was a rich and happy man, but the devil tested Job s devotion to God by destroying Job s house and family, and left Job poor and sick. Despite all his difficulties, Job stayed faithful to God. o When is your faith life strongest: when life is easy or difficult? [5 min] People of Faith St. Thomas Aquinas (p. 137) St. Albert the Great was Thomas Aquinas teacher in Paris. St. Albert once said to his class about Thomas Aquinas, You call him the Dumb Ox; I tell you this Dumb Ox will bellow so loud that his bellowings shall fill the world. [10 min] Sending Prepare the Way (p ) Use a Youth Bible to read the Scripture passages and recite the prayer on pages
