2 Lesson Plan 8:45 8:55/10:30-10:40 Gathering Activity March 4 th Pflaum Cover activity (see attached) Distribute What the Church Believes and Teaches books. Prepare your prayer table and begin with prayer. 8:55 9:05 /10:40 10:50 Ten Commandments March 4 Pflaum Weekly Explain to the children that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. It is the laws by God that we should follow to be closer to God. Turn to page 31 of What the Church Believes and Teaches and review the Ten Commandments. Using your teaching guide TG3-31, follow the instruction for the activity on pages 3 (see below) 9:05 9:25/10: 50-11:05 Discover Gospel and Doctrine March 11 Pflaum Weekly Hand out the March 11 Pflaum weekly. Select children to read the Gospel from page 3 conclude with the Sunday Connection Gospel summary. * this concludes with the Act of Contrition, this can be found on page 47 of What the Church Believes and Teaches. Ask them when they learned this prayer to bridge over to the Catholic Faith Word: Reconciliation On page 2, review Connecting Gospel to Doctrine Jesus is Our Light 9:25 9:40 /11:10-11:25 Chapel Please head to the Chapel for a Holy Week video PLEASE have one catechist and/or teen set up the stations for the next activity while the children are in the chapel. 9:40 10:10/11:25-11:55 Holy Week Stations Attached is an idea of how this is going to work. You will receive all the materials with instructions for each class room. At the conclusion, staple all materials together along with the Lenten Events Flyer to send home. 10:10 10:15/11:55-12:00 Closing Prayer Please make sure the room is cleaned up and put back together. Conclude with the Jelly Bean Prayer. 10:15/12:00 End of Class Return all attendance sheets to the mailbox along with any copies.

4 Teaching Guide TG3-31 Loyola Press Sunday Connection Gospel Reading John 3:14-21 Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life. Making the Connection (Grades 1, 2, and 3) Even if their consciences are not yet fully developed, young children do experience guilt and remorse for their misdeeds. The remedy for these feelings is our faith in God s infinite mercy and forgiveness, shown to us in the death and Resurrection of Jesus. Preparation for Sunday Scripture Readings (adapted from Sunday Connection to fit this lesson) 1. Say: The Gospel this week tells us that Jesus came to rescue us from the mess we were in. Let s listen to this important Gospel reading. 2. Read aloud today s Gospel, John 3: Say: In today s Gospel, we learn that Jesus made up for all our sins by dying on the cross. It wasn t fair that he should die for sins he didn t commit, but he wanted us to be able to start over. Show the paper doll. Say: And after he died, he gave us the Holy Spirit so that we could be strong enough to say no to sin. The Gospel says that if we believe all that Jesus did for us, we will someday live with him in heaven. Draw a halo and a smiling face on the paper doll. 4. Conclude in prayer together thanking God for forgiving our sins. Pray together the Act of Contrition.

5 A Walk through Holy Week Each class will receive a bag full of everything needed for each station. Please be mindful of the time for each station. What is not finished can be sent home with the students. While you are in the Chapel, it would be wise to have your co-catechist or teen aide set up each station. There will be many pamphlets going home with the children this week. Please staple them together at the end along with the Lenten Events Flyer. Station 1 Palm Sunday 9:15 9:25/11:00-11:10 Children will recite the attached echo pantomime. Station 2 Holy Thursday 9:25 9:40/11:10-11:25 Reflect on the Last Supper art work. Read Jesus Celebrates with his Friends (attached) Reflect on the Know questions and explain the Catholic Faith Word: Passover. Eucharistic Celebration students will head to the hall and share in a celebration of the Eucharist using oyster crackers and grape juice. Station 3 Good Friday 9:40 10:00/11:25-11:45 At your prayer table, cover the crucifix with the purple cloth. Using the attached pflaum page, read the Connecting the Gospel to Doctrine and do the activity: We Adore the Cross. Conclude with the Sorrowful Mysteries. (attached) After each mystery is ready, say a Hail Mary. Station 4 Easter Sunday 10:00 10:10/11:45-11:55 We will read the Gospel for Easter Sunday from Pflaum April 1, Jesus Is Raised to New Life. Select students to play the parts and read aloud. Color and cut out if time permits the Alleluia butterflies. Conclude class with the Jelly Bean prayer.

10 The 5 Sorrowful Mysteries 1. The Agony in the Garden After the Last Supper, Jesus went out to the garden to pray. He knew that he would be killed the next day. Jesus, you were so unhappy, but God sent an angel to help you to do all that God wanted you to do. Sometimes, I'm unhappy too. Mary, ask God to send an angel to help me to always do what is right. (Hail Mary) 2. The Scourging at the Pillar After Jesus was arrested, he was tied up and whipped. He didn't say anything. Jesus, how could you be so quiet while you were being so badly beaten? Maybe you were praying for the men who were hurting you. Mary, help me to pray for people who hurt me too. (Hail Mary) 3. The Crowning with Thorns After Jesus was beaten, they made fun of him. They took vines from a thorn bush and wrapped them around his head. They called him "their king" and the thorns were "his crown." Jesus, you really are The King of the Whole World, but those men didn't understand that. Sometimes people make fun of me. Mary, help me to forgive people who tease me, help me never to be mean like that to anyone else. (Hail Mary) 4. The Carrying of the Cross The Roman soldiers made Jesus carry his own cross to the place where they were going to kill him. The cross was really heavy, and Jesus was very weak. He kept falling down. On the way, he saw his mother, Mary. She couldn't do anything to help him. Mary, I know you were sad when you saw Jesus, and couldn't help him. Lots of days I need help. Mary, help me when I am having a bad day. (Hail Mary) 5. The Crucifixion The Roman soldiers crucified Jesus on a hill called Golgatha, which means "skull place". One of the last things Jesus asked for was that God would forgive everybody for what was happening. Mary, pray for me, that I will always forgive everyone that wrongs me; that I will always love like Jesus loves. (Hail Mary)
