Issue 2/2018 January Jollies Do you like fun, laughing, playing jolly games and eating tasty food? Then do not miss the next Jollies and remember to bring all your family and a few of your friends. We played so many games, starting with a Who is this? of children s TV characters. We made paper planes and tried to glide them through some very small target hoops. We had one game called Little Albert goes to the zoo and another game where we had to stand on smaller and smaller pieces of newspaper. That was funny to watch and even funnier for those who took part. There were prizes for the winners too. The buffet was very tasty and there was plenty for those who had burned off a lot of calories from all the running around.
TLC (Toddlers Little Church) What stormy weather we've been having even though it was quite calm when we boarded the boat to cross the lake. We could see the fish swimming through the clear blue water. Jesus was so tired he actually fell asleep! But suddenly it all changed. The wind blew and the rain poured down. The sky grew dark and the boat was tossed about on huge waves. Some of us shouted STOP, STOP but the waves grew even higher. We began to be scared but Jesus was still fast asleep. He wasn't scared. Eventually we woke him up. Do something, we begged. He stood up and said to the wind and the rain and the stormy sea Peace, be still and do you know what? They all stopped and we were safe again. We got off the boat, sang our songs and enjoyed our snack. What a good thing that Jesus was with us. It's good to know He's always there. Adventurers Growing up with Jesus. Since the New Year Adventurers and Explorers have been meeting together most weeks and we started January by journeying through the hall on a
Horrible History route to escape Herod and the Roman soldiers to settle in Egypt. Whilst in our tents we got our Bible maps out again to plan a route back to Nazareth avoiding Herod's horrible son Archelaus in Judea. Safely back in Nazareth we built a house like Jesus would have lived in. We lit our lanterns and rolled out our beds ready to act out life next door to the carpenter's shop. We ate flat bread from the oven for breakfast before carrying water pots on our heads to fetch water from the well. Our carpenters taught their apprentice a new song about the tools of the trade and the sounds they made! Some of us decorated a birthday cake with 12 candles on for Jesus whilst others followed the design plans to build a temple. Then it was time to set off on another journey from Nazareth to Jerusalem with an excited Jesus to visit the Temple. Having left his mother and her friends in the Women s Court, Jesus was so busy with the lessons from the priest that he got left behind and caused his parents a real worry! Jesus was growing up and when he was 30 years old his real work for his Father God was all set to start. It was good to have visiting children over half term to help us act out the story of Jesus being baptised in the river Jordan by John the Baptist. We made doves to take home to remind us that we would try to do something each day to make God happy with us too.
And now it is Lent... Two of the girls helped to turn our Christmas story board into an Easter board and challenged the boys to a race to see who could put the events between Christmas and Lent in the right order. We celebrated with pancakes before remembering how the angels helped Jesus to avoid temptation in the desert and then we had some games to remind us that CHEATING really IS NOT COOL!! Now we are counting down 40 days (not including Sundays) to see where we arrive????? FORMBY METHODIST CHURCH A Sunday morning group for children aged 3 and above. We meet from 10:15am to 11:45am at Formby Methodist Church. You are welcome to join us for Bible based games and activities.
TODDLERS LITTLE CHURCH Our next session is on Thursday 29 th March 9:30am to 11:30am An active Bible story time for you and your toddlers, with refreshments, at Formby Methodist Church. For more information Brownies The girls have been busy this half term. They have been working on not one but two badges; the dancer and the environment badge. On Burns Night the girls had a wonderful time learning Scottish Country Dancing. A week later Fluffy Owl taught the Brownies some ballet steps. For the environment badge the girls made an item out of rubbish. The things they made included Snow White s apple, Dumbo and pencil pots.
Other things that the Brownies looked at for the environment badge included: The effect of removing hedgerows The carbon footprint of various items Fertilizers and pesticides. We then joined the two badges together by making a grass skirt out of plastic. The girls performed a sea dance while wearing the skirt. During the dance bits of plastic were pulled off the skirts to show that plastic is filling up the world s oceans. This is causing problems for sea creatures. If you d like to see any of the dances check out our twitter Guides This term we have concentrated on the animal active Go for it. We made fat balls for the birds containing dried fruit, oats and seeds. The Guides hung these in their gardens. We have thought about habitat hazards, animal phobias and endangered species. There was then a quiz to see how much we actually know about animals around the world. We have also had a Dementia Awareness session which proved very thought provoking for the girls.
Some Guides have also been taking their confectioner badge; learning how to make honeycomb and fudge, and also how to decorate cakes. This has been very much enjoyed. The Guides doing their Baden-Powell Award are again running activities with the rest of the unit and this term they enjoyed a carnival atmosphere celebrating Mardi Gras in Brazil. The end of January saw some of the Guides have an enjoyable weekend in the barn at Scarisbrick campsite. Despite the weather on the Saturday we travelled by bus into Southport, lunched in McDonalds and then the girls enjoyed time at Jump Warehouse, the trampoline centre in Marshside. Sunday saw some of the girls enjoying the pedal cars outside whilst other spent time on various crafts. We are looking forward to celebrating Thinking Day with all the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers in Formby. Toddlers Please be careful when going in the Church hall on a Thursday morning. The youngsters at Toddlers love racing around in the cars. Don t be concerned if there are any bumps - we have the nurses and doctors outfits ready in the dressing up box plus the doctor s case! If you re looking for something quieter you can play with the
kitchen, read a book or do a puzzle, plus lots of other things in the Circle room. On the craft table this term we have been making underwater creatures - including a jellyfish, sea horse, a mummy whale plus her baby and more. You can see them on the board in the Circle room and there are a few here too. This has meant that poor Old Macdonald has had some very odd creatures on his farm during our singing time! We have been pleased to welcome some new babies and toddlers this term. We were also delighted to welcome some toddler families to Church on Sunday mornings when they joined in with the Bible based activities, including craft and games, with the Adventurers in the Maple Leaf room.
Sunday Services at 10:30am and 6:30pm. Everyone is welcome to join us for worship. At the same time as the morning service there are two children s groups held every week. Adventurers All children are welcome for Bible based games and activities. Explorers All young people in year 5 and above are welcome for hot chocolate and chat. Thursday Toddlers, 9:30am - 11:30am. All pre-school children with their parents or grandparents or carers are welcome. Term time only. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides meet from 5pm onwards. Term time only. Toddlers Little Church (TLC), 29th March, 9:30am-11:30am. An active Bible story time for pre school children with their parents or carers. Older siblings are welcome. Friday Junior Badminton, from 6:30pm. Term time only. Saturday Footsteps 10th March 3:30pm 6:00pm, join us for an afternoon of Bible based family fun and games with refreshments. Illumin8, 14th April 6:30pm 8pm. Games evening for young people in year 5 or above who are members of Footsteps or Explorers. Come and see if you re any good at pool, table football and more.
Junior Badminton All members returned after the Christmas holidays to focus on game play in preparation for the club tournament which will take place just before Easter. Older members have been mastering the scoring system and court etiquette. The focus has been on doubles matches although the tournament will also involve some singles games. The younger group have been working on serving and service return. All have shown a massive improvement since September and we are looking forward to scoring some very competitive games as members fight for the cup! Illumin8 The competitive spirit reigned at the last Illumin8 - but it was good that different people excelled at the different games. It would seem that table tennis skills do not necessarily transfer to the pool table or football game. A couple of the lads made some very impressive models with K nex. We all gained another lease of life after our refreshments of hot chocolate, squash, popcorn and biscuits and two teams battled it out on the hockey pitch. Before anyone gets distressed about the damage a hockey ball could make in the Church hall
we should point out that we were using a duster! Although we raced around trying to score goals with the duster, the floor looked much the same when we finished! Our next Illumin8 is on Saturday, 14th April. Explorers How are you at challenges? Go on, give it a go... Using the following letters how many words can you make? A E I O S T N R G Z The answer is probably quite a lot! Did you get any of the following? Grain, Roast, String, Gate, Great How many of yours had the letter Z in? Not a lot? If there were 10 of you playing and each of you held only one of the above letters how would you feel if you held the letter Z? Probably a bit left out. It s pretty rubbish being left out isn t it? Now try the following activity. Mark on the following lines how sure you are that the following things will happen. If you re really sure it ll happen make a mark on the right hand side. If you re not sure either way make a
mark in the middle and if you are sure it won t happen make a mark on the left hand side. It won t happen Not sure It will happen Liverpool will win the Premiership this year It will rain tomorrow I will go to University when I am older I will dye my hair red before I m 30 School will be boring tomorrow God accepts me as I am In life there are some things we don t know but we can take a good guess whether it ll happen or not. We don t know what the weather will be tomorrow but we can take a good guess when we look at the weather forecast. There is one thing we can be sure of though. God accepts us as we are. He doesn t leave anyone out. There are times when we might feel left out as we don t have the same toys as other kids in our class or we re not wearing the same clothes as everybody else. God isn t like other people can be. He is always there for us, he doesn t
care what toys we have or how we look, he loves us as we are. When Jesus was alive he was friends with a lot of people who had been left out. Can you try to make sure that you don t leave anyone out at school or any clubs you go to? Footsteps What do you do on a dark, wet, Saturday afternoon in January when the Christmas decorations have come down, the batteries have run flat in your new remote control car and January Jollies is two weeks away? The answer for lots of us was an afternoon of fun and games at the first Footsteps of The picture quiz was all about bridges and crossings, remembering that the new Runcorn Bridge is actually called the Mersey Gateway Bridge (the old one is the Silver Jubilee Bridge in case anyone was wondering). After the quiz we gathered to hear a story which involved a crossing but in this case it was the Israelites, led by Moses, crossing the Red Sea to escape the Egyptians. They were in a hurry and didn t have time to get a boat or build a bridge or tunnel, they had to trust God to make good their escape. God parted the sea so that the Israelites could
cross but then stopped the Egyptians by bringing the water back together. The problem was that Moses didn t know that God was going to part the sea and so he couldn t reassure the Israelites about exactly how they would be kept safe they had to trust God something which is easier said than done when you are in a difficult situation. The games and crafts had an Egyptian theme to some of them. One game was building a pyramid from plastic cups the record was set by one of the boys, he managed to get his to 14 layers high with a little help from his Dad to put the top one on. And the family challenge was to build a pyramid from the junk there was much debate about three versus four sided and height versus stability. There was also cake decorating, pencil pot making and a bookmark covered in hieroglyphics to have a go at. Those who fancied more of a challenge could have a go with the new glue gun to make a model where the sea parted to let the Israelites cross.
We finished the afternoon with tea which included the last few remaining mince pies left over from various Christmas activities (in date until June I m assured). The next Footsteps is on 10 th March it would be great to see you there why not invite a friend to join us? Come and help us celebrate... He is Risen! This Easter join us to celebrate, Jesus is Risen. Feel free to come along to some or all of the following: Easter Sunday 1st April 8:30am Early morning communion 9:15am Easter breakfast, no need to book, just turn up. 10:30amEaster Sunday communion service. During this service Adventurers and Explorers will leave for their Easter celebrations, including taking part in an Easter egg hunt. If you d like to come to Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services please check out our website for details.
Rainbows The Rainbows returned from their Christmas break and at our first session back we spoke about our Christmas and what presents we had received. We also talked about the jobs that people all round the world may do and whether they were indoor or outdoor jobs. Another week the Rainbows did 999 Help! where we taught the girls all about 999 and what they should do. We even gave scenarios for the girls to act out with one another. Survival was another session where we had the Rainbows drawing items with which they couldn t live without and what is a necessity for human life. Each of the activities we have completed so far have been chosen by the girls. One of our Young Leaders is doing her Leadership qualifications and led the sessions as part of her training. She did a great job. We went to the panto to see Beauty and the Beast. It was an excellent show and the girls absolutely loved it. We had little sweetie bags for the girls in case they got peckish. We have some great activities coming up ranging from making pancakes to planting blubs. We have welcomed many new girls and also have had some move up to Brownies this term.
