BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES LEADER GUIDE A Storm (Matthew 8:23-27) Lower Elementary Workshop Focus: We can ask Jesus for help when we are afraid. Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together. Each week, remember to welcome kids to the rotation. Keep in mind that for some kids it may be the first time they are visiting your workshop! If kids have heard the story several times during previous weeks, read it again! Kids learn through repetition, and every workshop will explore the Bible story in a slightly different way. Remember that the Shepherds are there to support you as they accompany kids each week. Be sure to visit to download the Family Page for this story. Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES Open the Bible (10 minutes) A Storm Storytelling Invite kids to sit on the floor in a circle. Hi, kids! Welcome to our game lesson today. I m so glad that you could come and join us as we learn about an amazing story. But first I want to talk about weather. Have you ever been in a scary storm? Ask the kids about their experiences, and focus on what parts of the storm were scary and what they did during the storm. Storms can be scary, can t they? Luckily we have things that can help us prepare for scary weather. Our weather reports tell us when there is a chance that the weather will be bad. Show the reports and talk about some of the ways the report can tell us about bad weather (tornado watch, hurricane warning, etc. choose something area appropriate). More important than the weather report, though, we have people who have figured out the safest things to do in bad weather. Show the kids the safety tips about the storms that might hit your area. Spark Story Bible Local weather report (paper, Internet, or TV) Local weather safety tips (tornado, hurricane, blizzard, or other areaappropriate emergency weather) In today s story, the disciples find themselves in a scary storm. They didn t have weather reports like us, so they were caught by surprise. To make it even scarier, they were on a boat in the middle of a lake when the storm came! Let s read our A Storm 31

story and find out what happens! Have the kids open their Spark Story Bibles to A Storm on page 286. Read the story to them and be sure to show the pictures. Wow! Jesus was able to make the storm stop. Jesus saved the disciples from the storm. How would you feel if you had been one of the disciples on the boat that day? Allow all answers. I would have felt amazed by Jesus. Even the storm listened to him! Activate Faith (25 minutes) Cross the Sea Set Up: Place seven parallel strips of masking tape on the floor. The strips should be long enough to have all the kids lined up along the last one. Cut out one cardboard boat for each kid with a string long enough to reach perpendicularly across all seven strips. Place the boats at the first tape and stretch the strings across the tape strips. Label a set of index cards A and B for each kid. At the end of the strings, place a pair of the A and B cards for each boat/kid. Activity Instructions The disciples were in the boat because they were going fishing. The Sea of Galilee is a big lake in Israel. Show the kids the map of Israel and have them find Galilee on the map. Then show them the map of Galilee to give them a closer view. The Sea of Galilee is pretty big, but it s also pretty shallow. Who can tell me what shallow means? (not very deep) When a lake is shallow and a storm comes, it gets very windy and very wavy. It would be very scary to be on a boat during a storm on the Sea of Galilee. Spark Story Bible Spark Storm Questions (page 43) Map of Israel Map of Galilee Masking tape Cardboard/tagboard boats String Index cards, 2 per kid Can you imagine what it must have been like in the boat? Give me your best scared face to show me how you think the disciples must have looked. Those are some scared faces! In our first game, we are going to answer some questions to help us really learn the story. We are each going to have our own boat on the Sea of Galilee. Have the kids choose a boat and go stand across from the boat on the opposite side of the room at the end of the string. Explain that they each have an A and a B card. You will ask questions about the story. For each question, they must hold up the letter for the answer they think is correct. If they are right, they can pull their boat across the sea to the next masking tape strip. If they answer incorrectly, their boat stays where it is. The first boat or boats across the sea (to the last tape strip) win, but the game ends when ALL the boats are safely across the sea! Proceed to ask the kids questions from the Spark Storm Questions sheet on page 43. If a boat or boats begin to lag behind, encourage the kids to work together to help get the correct answers. You kids were wonderful at that game. I m so glad that we could get all the boats across the lake safely. You guys really know our story well. Congratulations! 32 Workshop Leader Guides

No-Fear Obstacle Course Set Up: Place the materials for the obstacle course along the side of the room. Activity Instructions For our next game, we are going to run an obstacle course. When the disciples were on the boat during the storm, would the boat have been still? Accept all answers. That s right, the boat would be moving and rocking in the winds and the waves. So it must have been like an obstacle course for the disciples to get from one end to the other to wake up Jesus. Spark Story Bible Obstacle materials (pool noodles, chairs, tunnels, boxes, hoops, etc.) Stopwatch Explain that the group will work together to create an obstacle course. They can use any of the materials provided, but they must create at least five obstacles to get through to get to the other side of the room. Obstacles could include things like running through a tunnel, spinning around a bat, jumping over a noodle, etc. Give suggestions if the kids need help, but give them plenty of room to be creative. Once they have created their obstacle course and everyone understands how to run it, the group will run through the course, one kid at a time. This will be timed as a group effort so as soon as one kid finishes the obstacle course, the next one can begin. Time the kids through the course the first time and share their combined time with them. That was a great first run. Do you guys think you can make it across the obstacle course boat faster this time? Let s try it! Have the kids run the course again in the same way, and time them again. Their goal is to beat their first time. BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES Depending on the time available, they could continue to try to beat their best score or make another obstacle course and run that, as well. You guys ran the obstacle courses very fast. How fast do you think you might run it if you were the disciples and you were afraid of the storm? The disciples were very afraid of the storm, but they didn t need to be, did they? Jesus was able to control the wind and the waves, and he stopped the storm. It was a miracle. This story can teach us something very important. Jesus asked the disciples, Why are you afraid? Why were the disciples afraid in our story? (the storm) They were afraid of something real and scary. But Jesus knew that they didn t need to be afraid because he would protect them. We can ask Jesus for help, too, when we are afraid. He might not be right there to stop what is frightening us, but we know that he is still there helping us. What are some things that you are afraid of that you can ask Jesus for help with? Allow time for kids answers. A Storm 33

Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. Jesus protected the disciples when they were afraid during the storm, and Jesus is with us, protecting us when we are afraid, too! The next time you are afraid, pray to Jesus and ask for help. Jesus will be with you until the fear goes away! Today for our prayer we are going to create a storm with our hands as I pray. Copy what I do and pay attention to the volume of the noise I am making. Family Pages None Prayer Time Dear God, Keep the winds calm, Rub hands together. Keep us safe and dry. Snap fingers together. And when we are afraid of the storms in our lives, Clap hands on legs quickly and loudly. Remind us that Jesus is with us, Snap fingers together. And give us peace. Rub hands together. Amen. 34 Workshop Leader Guides

BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES Open the Bible (10 minutes) A Storm Storytelling Gather with the kids on the floor with the whiteboard and the marker nearby. As you get into the story, you may want to ask one of the kids to be your secretary and write on the board the ideas the kids come up with. Welcome, kids! I m glad that you could join me today to talk about a wonderful story in the Bible. This is a story about Jesus, and it is a great one because it tells us some important things about who Jesus was. We believe that Jesus was both human and God. Do you know of anything that can be two things at once? Take their examples. It shouldn t be an easy question. If they come up with an idea, discuss it, but they may strike out. Spark Bibles Spark Bible Stickers Whiteboard Marker One of the most special things about Jesus is that he was fully human, which means he was just like us, and he was fully God, which means he had the ability to save us from our sins. In our story today, Jesus shows us both sides of himself in the story. Let s read Matthew 8:23-27 together and watch for things that are human and things that are divine or godly. Read the story together and let the kids use their stickers. Then gather the kids and ask them to list parts of the story where Jesus is human and where he is divine. (human he sleeps, he walks, he talks, he uses a boat to get around; divine he is called Lord, he stopped the storm, etc.) A Storm 35

This story is a wonderful example that Jesus was more than just a good person Jesus was GOD! Only God could get the wind and the waves to listen. Normal humans don t have that ability. It is a very special thing that God came to Earth as a human to be with us and to save us, just like he saved the disciples from the storm. Activate Faith (25 minutes) Ordering the Waves Set Up: Copy and cut out Wave Templates. Activity Instructions Since Jesus is God we know that he could control the wind and the waves, but the disciples were just figuring out who Jesus was. They knew he was human because he did all the things they did, but they also knew he was special. Try to put yourself in the story. How would you have felt to be on a small boat in the middle of a sea in a bad storm? Accept all answers. Now how would you have felt if Jesus was able to stop the storm just because you were scared? What would you think of Jesus question Why are you afraid, you of little faith? Accept all answers. Spark Bibles Masking tape Wave Templates (pages 45-48), 1 per 2 kids This story is great because it shows a time when the disciples were figuring out that Jesus was more than a good guy and a prophet. Jesus was someone that nature listened to! For our first game today, we are going to practice calming the waves ourselves. To do this we need to split up into teams of two. Explain that each team will receive a set of waves and their job is to put them in order so that the storm subsides. Have them tape the waves up in order on a portion of the wall or the floor in the correct order. Don t mention that the text is straight from their Spark Story Bibles let them figure that out as they work to put the story in order. If they are able do it without their Bibles, congratulate them for being great listeners! Answer Key 1. AND WHEN HE GOT INTO THE BOAT (Matthew 8:23a) 2. HIS DISCIPLES FOLLOWED HIM. (Matthew 8:23b) 3. A WINDSTORM AROSE ON THE SEA, (Matthew 8:24a) 4. SO GREAT THAT THE BOAT WAS BEING SWAMPED BY THE WAVES; (Matthew 8:24a) 5. BUT [JESUS] WAS ASLEEP. (Matthew 8:24b) 6. AND THEY WENT AND WOKE HIM UP, SAYING, (Matthew 8:25a) 36 Workshop Leader Guides

7. LORD, SAVE US! WE ARE PERISHING! (Matthew 8:25b) 8. AND [JESUS] SAID TO THEM, (Matthew 8:26a) 9. WHY ARE YOU AFRAID, YOU OF LITTLE FAITH? (Matthew 8:26a) 10. THEN HE GOT UP AND REBUKED THE WINDS AND THE SEA; (Matthew 8:26b) 11. AND THERE WAS A DEAD CALM. (Matthew 8:26b) 12. THEY WERE AMAZED, SAYING, (Matthew 8:27a) 13. WHAT SORT OF MAN IS THIS... (Matthew 8:27b) 14. THAT EVEN THE WINDS AND THE SEA OBEY HIM? (Matthew 8:27b)] Did you notice anything about the waves? Accept answers. If you kept your Bibles open, you d see that the waves were the same text as our Bible story exactly. The best place to go to learn about Jesus and his story is in the Bible, after all. Blown Away Set Up: Make the paper boats in advance; depending on your classroom floor covering (linoleum, carpet, tile, etc.), you could make them flat boats, 3-D boats with sails, or even matchbox cars with boats around them (so the wheels work). The point is that they should be able to be blown across the room with the straws. Also create a starting line with masking tape. Activity Instructions Now we are going to play another game. For this game, we are all going to be playing alone, but I will need a volunteer to be our first Jesus. Take a volunteer and explain that he or she will be the sleeping Jesus. When Jesus is sleeping, the kids begin to blow their boats across the sea toward Jesus. Every time Jesus is asleep, the kids can blow their boats, but if Jesus wakes up (i.e., opens his eyes), they have to stop blowing because Jesus calms the sea. If our Jesus catches kids blowing their boats, they must go back to the starting line. None Paper boats Straws Masking tape Obstacles such as rocks or branches BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES The first boat to reach Jesus is the winner, and he or she has earned the right to be the next Jesus in our game. Keep playing as time allows. If the game is over too quickly, consider adding obstacles (rocks, branches, etc.) that the boats have to be blown around in order to reach Jesus. A Storm 37

In this game, we were the wind and the waves blowing our boats around the Sea of Galilee, but like the wind and the waves, we obeyed Jesus. Jesus had the power to control the wind and the waves because he was God s Son. The disciples learned just how special he was on that boat trip. The disciples went from being afraid to being amazed in the blink of an eye, thanks to Jesus. Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. In our story today, the disciples were afraid of the storm. They were afraid because they were human. Jesus is human, but he is also God. He knew that he could save the disciples from the storm. The wind and the waves listened to him. Jesus can help us when we are afraid, too. For our prayer today, we are going to pray individually and silently. Explain that each kid can take a sugar cube and on it can write any fears. It could be anything that is bothering them, an anxiety, a phobia or just something that is worrying them about someone else. They should write it on the sugar cubes. Emphasize that because this is an individual prayer, they don t have to share their fears with anyone else. Family Pages Sugar cubes, 1 per kid Fine-point markers, 1 per kid Cups of water, 1 per kid Prayer Time For prayer time, allow kids to take a spot alone in the room. Have them drop the sugar cube into their cup of water and watch it dissolve. As it dissolves, have them pray silently to God to take away their fear and help them just as Jesus helped the disciples. When the sugar is dissolved, have them say, Amen and return to the group. Thank you, everyone, for coming today. I m glad you could learn about Jesus being fully God a God who can control the wind and the waves! 38 Workshop Leader Guides

BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES LEADER GUIDE A Storm (Matthew 8:23-27) All Kids Workshop Focus: God protects us from the storms of our lives. Keep these tips in mind as you welcome kids to the workshop and explore the story together. Each week, remember to welcome kids to the rotation. Keep in mind that for some kids it may be the first time they are visiting your workshop! If kids have heard the story several times during previous weeks, read it again! Be sure to visit to download the Family Page for this story. Make copies of it and ask Shepherds to distribute it during the Wrap Up. BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES Open the Bible (10 minutes) A Storm Storytelling Invite the kids to sit on the floor together in a circle. Have instruments handy. Use whatever instruments the church has on hand, but egg shakers can be easily made with plastic Easter eggs and unpopped popcorn (just leave a bit of room so they have a good shake to them). Welcome, kids! I m so glad that you could join us today. Today we are going to hear a story about Jesus and the disciples. Please open your Spark Story Bibles to page 286, A Storm. Older kids, you may also open your Spark Bibles to Matthew 8: Ask a volunteer to read the story from the Spark Story Bible, and have the older kids follow along in their Spark Bibles and use the stickers. Spark Story Bibles Spark Bibles Spark Bible Stickers Egg shakers Pot lids Other musical instruments as desired What did you think of our story today? Take their first impressions and encourage them to answer beyond I liked it or It was ok. Today s story about the storm is an important one in the Bible because it shows the disciples beginning to learn that Jesus was someone extra special. The disciples already knew that they wanted to follow Jesus and learn from him, but now they began to learn that Jesus was able to protect them and rescue them, too. A Storm 39

In our story today, the disciples were saved from a storm. We are going to reread our story and create the storm to help us experience it like the disciples might have. Hand out the instruments to the kids and demonstrate how the egg shakers can sound like rain, the pot lids can be like thunder, and they can whistle for the wind. If kids don t have an instrument, they can still whistle, blow, and use their hands to make storm noises! Remind them that when they get to the point where Jesus says, Peace. Be still. they must instantly get silent. Then begin to slowly read the story again from the Spark Story Bible and have the kids provide the storm soundtrack to it. Activate Faith (25 minutes) Fishing on the Sea Set Up: Print out a set of Fishing on the Sea Fish, one set for every four kids in the class. Consider laminating them if possible. On the back side, add a sticky magnet for fishing poles to grab onto. Then create enough fishing poles for each kid using a stick, a string, and a magnet on the end of the string. Create a masking tape sea on one end of the room, and place all of the sets of fish inside. Activity Instructions The storm plays a big part in our story today because it allowed Jesus to show his power and save the disciples. But before the storm came, the disciples were out fishing. Many of the disciples had been fishermen before they left to follow Jesus, so this was something they were good at. We are going to practice our fishing techniques today, too, as we master the facts of our story. Spark Story Bibles Sticks String Magnets Masking tape Fishing on the Sea Fish (pages 49-50) Explain that you are going to split into an even number of teams, with three to five kids per team. If the teams don t have an equal number of kids, it really doesn t matter because each kid will get multiple runs, and the leader could play if needed. Have each team line up on the opposite side of the room from the pond. Teams send one kid down at a time to fish out part of the story. Once a fish is retrieved, he or she runs back to the team and hands off the pole to the next kid. There are nine fish to collect, so the team will have to guide their fishers to bring back a fish that they still need. Once they have gathered the nine different fish, they work together as a team to put the fish in the order of the story. The first team to get a complete catch is the winner! You kids would make great fisherpeople! Part of the reality of being a fisherman is dealing with the weather. Most of the disciples probably felt comfortable in a boat, so if they were afraid in the storm, we know it must have been a bad one. But even though they were afraid, they needn t have worried. Jesus was able to protect them from the storm. Likewise, Jesus can protect us from storms in our life. What are some things that make us afraid and worried that it might help to ask Jesus for help with? Take their ideas. Those are great ideas! Jesus can help us with all sorts of storms, even ones that aren t weather! 40 Workshop Leader Guides

Don t Rock the Boat Activity Instructions For our second game today, we will be playing with the parachute, which will be our Sea of Galilee. We are going to practice making our storms and listening to Jesus! Have the kids grab an edge of the parachute and start with some warm-up games. First, practice taking the parachute from a calm sea to a slightly wavy one, to a huge storm, and back to calm. Practice making small waves and big waves. Now that we ve practiced being the Sea of Galilee, what do you think it would be like to be a boat on the sea during a storm? Take their comments. None Parachute or bedsheet Balls of various sizes Plastic fish Empty shoebox, basket, or bucket For our next game, we are going to pretend this ball is our boat on the sea. Let s practice getting the boat to different parts of the sea. Have the kids experiment to see if they can roll the ball in a circle around the edge of the parachute. Then have them practice passing the ball from one person to another across the parachute. Great! I think you are ready to try our storm game. We are going to start with the ball (our boat) in a calm lake and slowly start the storm. Our goal is to keep our ball in the lake, no matter how big and crazy our storm gets. Choose one kid to be Jesus, and explain that when Jesus says, Be still, they must immediately pull the parachute taut to go back to a calm sea! This will likely launch the ball into the air, so help them catch it, as well. This game can be repeated with different kids playing the Jesus role. BIBLE SKILLS & GAMES Did bigger waves make it harder to keep the boat going in one direction or not? Did it make it hard to keep the boat on the sea? The storm the disciples faced was real, and they were afraid. Jesus had the power to protect them and control the wind and the waves. Jesus can protect us, too, if we ask him. If there is time, kids can also practice fishing with the parachute. Place a box/ bucket on the parachute and several plastic fish, and have the kids work together to get the fish into the box. A Storm 41

Send (5 minutes) Wrap Up Remind the Shepherds to distribute the Family Page for this story if the kids haven t already received it, and come together for Wrap Up. There are always storms going on in our lives or the lives of those around us. They may not be storms like in our story today with real wind and waves and thunder and lightning. They may be in our head, or between friends, or at school. Anything that frightens us or worries us is a storm to us. But like the disciples, we can ask Jesus for help. Jesus has the power to calm the storms in our lives. The best way to ask him for help is through prayer. Family Pages Water in a wide bowl Prayer Time Water can be seen in storms as rain, snow, and hail, but it also has a place in the church. It is used in our baptisms. In our prayer today, we are going to sprinkle water on each other and pray a blessing for each other! Have the kids sit in a circle. One at a time, they will turn to the person to the right and say, Remember Jesus can calm your storms as they sprinkle them with a bit of water. Once all the kids have been sprinkled, pray aloud: Dear God, Thank you for sending Jesus to protect us and love us through the storms in our lives. May this water remind us that you are always with us and you have the power to calm even the wind and the waves. In your name we pray. Amen. 42 Workshop Leader Guides
