1 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST 8:30 am & 11 am September 16, 2018 AS WE GATHER Lord, I Believe; Help My Unbelief! Imagine if you were the father in today s Gospel. Since childhood, his son has been plagued by an unclean spirit that makes him mute and throws him down, doing bodily harm. The dad brings his son to Jesus disciples, and they are of no help. The father comes before Jesus and asks him to help... if He can. Jesus responds, If you can! All things are possible for one who believes. To which the father cries out, I believe; help my unbelief! (Mark 9:23 24). This father, who is at the end of his rope, cries out with faith mixed with desperation. Thankfully, his worthiness, and our worthiness, does not depend on the greatness or smallness of faith. Instead, it depends on Jesus, the object of our faith. When we face desperate times, we, too, cry out in prayer and faith, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! PRESERVICE MUSIC O Bread of Life from Heaven J. Bender WELCOME Deacon Jim Frusti Today we welcome Pastor Robert Marshall from The Lutheran Heritage Foundation RINGING OF THE BELL

2 825 Rise, Shine, You People 11 AM Shout to the Lord INVOCATION Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Psalm 116:4 5, Pastor: Pastor: Then I called on the name of the Lord: O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Since we are gathered to our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. The Lord is near to you. He has drawn near in the person of Jesus Christ, whose death and resurrection bring forgiveness, life, and salvation. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. And now my head shall be lifted up. I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord. 821 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus (tune: Ode to Joy) 1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; His the scepter, His the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion Thunder like a mighty flood: Jesus out of ev ry nation Has redeemed us by His blood.

4 INTROIT Psalm 103:8 11; antiphon: Psalm 103:2 3 Leader: Leader: Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will He keep His anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those who fear Him. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases. SALUTATION Pastor: The Lord be with you. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, our support and defense in every need, continue to preserve Your Church in safety, govern her by Your goodness, and bless her with Your peace; Pastor: for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Sit

OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 50:4 10 ( He who vindicates me is near. ) Reader: The Lord God has given Me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning He awakens; He awakens My ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened My ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. I gave My back to those who strike, and My cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not My face from disgrace and spitting. But the Lord God helps Me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates Me is near. Who will contend with Me? Reader: Let us stand up together. Who is My adversary? Reader: Let him come near to Me. Behold, the Lord God helps Me; who will declare Me guilty? Reader: Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of His servant? 5

6 Reader: Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle James 3:1 12 ( From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. ) Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, [a] and set on fire by hell. [b] 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, [c] these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

7 Stand Holy Gospel Mark 9:14 29 (Jesus casts out a spirit.) 14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, What are you arguing about with them? 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able. 19 And he answered them, O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me. 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. 23 And Jesus said to him, If you can! All things are possible for one who believes. 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, I believe; help my unbelief! 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could we not cast it out? 29 And he said to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer. Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ

8 THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please Sit

10 Sermon Pastor Robert Marshall Stand Prayer of the Church Psalm 116:4 5 Pastor: We come before our Lord in prayer, saying along with the psalmist, O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Father in heaven, as we hear of the suffering and humiliation described by Isaiah, we remember Jesus great sacrifice on our behalf. In times of persecution for the sake of bearing Christ s name, remind us that You are with us and Your grace sustains us. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Pastor: Pastor: Pastor: Father in heaven, James reminds us that the tongue is a powerful part of our body, and our words can do great harm or good. Give us Your Spirit that we would not lie, betray, slander, or hurt with our words, but instead use them to defend our neighbor and praise Your name. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Father in heaven, Your Son cast out demons and bestowed healing with just His Word. According to Your will, restore and give wholeness to those who are suffering, [especially...]. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Father in heaven, You care for all of Your sheep. Work through us to reach out in love to those among us who are straying from Your fold. Restore them so that together we might be fed by Your Word and Sacrament in the holy flock of Your Church. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.

11 Pastor: Pastor: Heavenly Father, give us faithful hearts with which to receive Your Son s body and blood at Your Table. Grant that it strengthen and sustain us in the one true faith. O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy. Amen. Sit OFFERING OF OUR TITHES AND GIFTS We invite you to fill out our Friendship Card during the offering. The card is found on the back of the pew. Please pass your card to the center aisle and leave in pew. At the Offering (8:30 AM) Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior J. Bender (11 AM) Trading My Sorrows Stand PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 And also with you. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. [Colossians 3:1] We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. [Psalm 136] It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

12 Pastor: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You sent Your Son to be the Servant who gave us His body and blood on the cross to win our vindication. We give You thanks that You now feed us with His same body and blood as we remember, and receive the benefits of, the sacrifice our Savior made on our behalf. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION Please see our communion policy stated on the inside front cover.
