4 A SINGULAR CALL TO ACTION Stop for a minute and look around you. Is this where you wanted to be when you drew up your strategic plans? The mission of The Gideons International In Canada is to communicate the gospel of Jesus Christ through personal evangelism and Scripture distribution, in Canada and worldwide, so that people may receive eternal life. In 2011, our Board or Directors laid out an aggressive vision for this ministry, a multipronged target to guide leadership in developing strategies and goals. At that time, we were newly autonomous and forging our own path as a Canadian association for the first time in 100 years. In some areas, like international ministry, we were starting from scratch. In others, like membership requirements and innovation, we were in need of some long overdue adjustments. Five years later, after re-shaping almost every area of the ministry, the cornerstone pillars of that vision continue to propel us forward: developing and strengthening partnerships with churches striving for truly global involvement and long-term impact reinforcing and growing our membership as ministry builders growing the evangelism impact within Canada 2015/16 revealed remarkable progress in each of those areas, and this Impact Report features what we view as the highlights all for the glory of God. Within those milestones, I m most thrilled with these four: Launch of ShareWord Global as our international ministry arm First few steps of long-term ministry in the incredible nation of India Growth of SendMe, our youth arm and our future ministry builders Introduction of an online member community called ShareWord Network I m blown away by the opportunities before us to share the gospel on the global stage. It s no surprise that one of my favourite verses is Mark 16:15, where Jesus gives His final instructions to His disciples before returning to the Father: Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. It s the basis of our mission statement and a singular call to action that fires me up every day on my way to work. Thank you for your partnership with us as we heed His calling. A stunning contrast in these photos taken on a visit to the frontlines in August In one photo I m standing with soldiers who look grim, tired and resigned to their fate. In the other, I m beside a smiling soldier holding a Ukranian Hope magazine in his hand. Same country, same life-threatening surroundings. The difference? The hope of Christ. In the brief time I had, I was able to share the gospel with Oleg and it changed the expression on his face. He may not have accepted Christ that day, but he d seen a glimmer of hope in his dark world. Peter Marshall

It serves as a social gathering point, a key centre for ministry information and training, and a one-stop shop for ordering everything members need to be equipped in sharing the gospel. Over 40% of member households had registerd on the Network within months of the launch. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Gideon member Sharlene Standing noticed a homeless man named Raymond digging through the garbage bin outside her apartment one day. By taking the time to talk with the man who ties all of his meagre possessions to a rusty bike, Sharlene s been able to pray with Raymond and even share a Gideon Scripture with him. Since he often hangs out at the dumpster, it s an open conversation that she hopes leads to saving faith in Jesus.

7 CANADIAN HIGHLIGHTS Pan Am Games Special Gospel of John covers were created for these games held in the Golden Horseshoe around Lake Ontario in Summer With 34,000 of these, plus an additional True North Gospel of John, the event became a rallying point for Ontario members. Seasonal Events Like the Vancouver-based members pictured above right, Gideons use special holidays as an open door to share the message of Christ s love with Canadians. Through special packages with a Gospel of John or New Testament, the seeds of God s Word are planted. Members are also involved in community events like fairs, markets, parades, and other outdoor events where they set up a stand or booth and offer people free copies of God s Word. Institutions Having the opportunity to place God s Word in public places remains a privilege. The numbers are up again this year for the Scriptures we ve designated for hotels, prisons, long-term care facilities and medical institutions. Even our youth Testaments nearly reached last year s numbers, despite the resistance by schools to Grade 5 distributions. Other Languages Recognizing the opportunity to reach Canadians whose first language isn t English or French, we re beginning to introduce Scriptures in other languages. Interns were brought on staff to help promote and support the program, and two international outreach trips to Moldova and Brazil helped SendMe impact young lives for Christ on a global scale. A friend of mine shared a SendMe Gospel of John with me. I was curious and decided to search the NewLife app and became very interested in learning more. Through that I found Jesus...Now I use the SendMe Gospels of John to share Jesus with my friends at the University of Alberta. Jane, Edmonton AB As we were going door-to-door in a village in Brazil this year, we met an entire family. We shared the gospel with them, along with Gospels of John, [like the one in top right photo] and the entire family, including four teenaged children, gave their lives to the Lord. Andrew, Brazil Outreach Team (second from left) I first had a Gospel of John shared with me this year and as a Christian I was so excited to share it with someone around me who needed hope. The next week I was able to share it with a neighbor of mine who was going through a challenging season. After sharing hope with her, I knew that I needed to make this a regular thing. Being a SendMe participant and the owner of a small bakery, I decided to share the gospels with my customers. I believe that as I sow the seed of the Word of God, many of my customers will find the bread of life. Coral, 23, PEI 8

10 NORTHERN CANADA A The problems facing northern communities are well documented. Poor living conditions, poverty and suicide are just three of the challenges encountered on a daily basis in Northern Canada. Gideon members are active in sharing the gospel in northern communities across Canada, from the Yukon all the way to Labrador. Often travelling in winter over ice roads, members bring copies of God s Word and collaborate with the believers living there year round. This year saw Jason and Charmaine Brown (pictured at right) joining our efforts in sharing Christ s hope in the form of music. Not only did they bring Gospels of John and Scripture magazines, they also encouraged the communities in song. A Portuguese version of our Redemption magazine was also shared with people, including directly with prisoners and their guards. The team of 28 Canadians worked side by side with over 1,000 local volunteers from 125 churches. One Canadian, Antony (above middle), approached a man sitting alone. He looked at me with an empty gaze and I could feel all the pain this man was bearing. I started to share with him that the free gift I was holding was more than just a book that it changed my life! I told him about my own dark past of alcoholism and thoughts of suicide. I could tell my story was resonating because he started to cry. He told us he was an alcoholic and had been kicked out of his tribe. He lived alone, far from his kids and his family, and had nothing left to live for. He said today something strange happened that he started to feel while I shared that he needed Jesus to save him. So we prayed with him and he invited Jesus into his life! He took his new Gospel of John and pressed it against his heart, which was now truly transformed by the love and grace of Jesus. 12

Antony, Brazil Team Member (left in cowboy hat) NICARAGUA & HAITI No one symbolized the passion and interest toward the gospel in Nicaragua better than Maxwell, seated with Peter above. Nine years old and already evangelizing his neighbourhood, Maxwell was thrilled to receive his own Bible. Our evangelism team, working side by side with six local churches for one week, experienced that same enthusiastic response by Nicaraguans for the Esperanza Scripture magazines being offered. With Latin American photos from cover to cover, these copies of God s Word were introducing people to the freedom found only in Christ. The statistics are stacked against Haiti where half of the population lives on less than $1 a day, only two in five children attend school regularly, and one in 50 people are infected with HIV/AIDS. Over 90% of the population identifies as Catholic or Protestant but voodoo is often practiced alongside Christianity. This Winter, 24 Canadians left their comfortable lives for two weeks to share the Good News in Haiti. What a combination of team members with different backgrounds, says Gaston Jolicoeur, who led the Haiti Global Outreach (GO) Team. 14 SOUTH ASIA INDIA Population: 1.25 billion Languages spoken: 1,672 Main Religion: Hinduism (80%) Scriptures shared: 70,650 PAKISTAN Population: 182 million Languages: Urdu (+60 more) Main Religion: Islam (97%) Scriptures shared: 11,500 BANGLADESH Population: 157 million Languages: Bengali and English Main Religion: Islam (90%) Scriptures shared: 20,000 INDIA With 400 million people never having heard about Jesus, we decided to put together a special Scripture for India around the theme of light. After isolating the core tenants of Hinduism, we asked, What does the Bible say about those things? Next we sourced imagery that illustrated those verses or served as cultural backgrounds. Finally, we asked a printer in India to produce a high quality product that would make these copies of God s Word attractive to the reader. What a joy to present these Scripture magazines in person to pastors and evangelists in India and hear their response. They couldn t wait to begin using those magazines to introduce people to Christ. Thasa Singh, pictured on the cover, was captured by the magazine. I got it from my aunt s daughter. I just kept it off, I did not read it. Then while watching TV...I took it and I read. That big light from God fell upon me. And I thought, He s the one and only God in this whole world. If we worship an idol it can t speak with us, it can t give anything. God knows us from the mother s womb. He says, The Lord our God is near to us. I can feel that God is near to me. 15 People who read this book will surely believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven and Jesus is the only God. Rebecca Williams, a university student who took a case of the India Light magazines to share with friends at school PAKISTAN & BANGLADESH Christians experience more violence in Pakistan than almost anywhere else, but the church remains alive and growing. Our partner, John Michael from Development Communication Association (in the suit above), is actively reaching out to churches, youth groups, colleges, schools, and rural evangelists to share God s Word. The Urdu/English New Testaments are also popular for people wanting to learn English. John had an opportunity to give Bibles to college employees (pictured above). They couldn t legally do it on campus, so they met at the nearby bus stand instead. Now he s praying for a chance to connect with the students. In Bangladesh, where 90% of the people are Muslim, being a Christian is dangerous. That s why the faces of the believers are blurred in the photo above right, for their own protection. For many Muslims, the starting point of conversion is reading a Bible and comparing it to what they ve been taught. That s why it s so important to equip these church leaders with God s Word. Through a partner, we had the joy of equipping these 31 believers with their own copy of the Bangla New Testament and a multiplying disciples training manual. After two days of training, these house church leaders left with Bibles each to distribute in their regions. 1.6 Billion People! 16 FORMER SOVIET UNION MOLDOVA Population: 3.6 million Language: Romanian, Russian Main Religion: Orthodox (96%) Scriptures shared: 13,000 RUSSIA Population: 144 million Language: Russian Main Religion: Orthodox (75%) Scriptures shared: 5,000 UKRAINE Population: 45 million Languages: Ukrainian Main Religion: Orthodox (72%) Scriptures shared: 25,000 MOLDOVA When you re ministering to young people in a nation that has one of the world s highest percentages of social orphans and sex trade victims, the message is pretty focused on hope. Seven young adults with hearts for evangelism cleared their schedules mid-summer and travelled to Moldova with SendMe. Using music, sports, activities, even a mini-spa, they emphasized as clearly as they could that God loved them and had a plan for them. Our SendMe team had a key message, says Kelsey from Langley, BC. God sees you. God loves you. There is hope. I don t think I have ever given so many children SO many hugs in such a short time period. While it may seem like just a hug, it was so much more than that. It was God showing His love for these children through our team. And man, the love was just pouring out! Adrienne believes the work they started will have ripple effects. Our time together went beyond hair and nails; it was the first time many of these girls had adults serve them, love them and tell them their worth. The message of Jesus spoke to their identity and His purpose for their life. He will use them to shine light and give life to some of the darkest places. 16

17 My time with the team from Canada was unforgettable! I was surprised that they believe in God and still have fun, because I didn t think that God could be so fun. Arina from Svetliy, Moldova RUSSIA & UKRAINE As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine drags on, the gospel is continuing to reach the frontlines. Volunteers risk their lives on a weekly basis so that refugees, soldiers and struggling villagers receive food, supplies and God s Word. Alexey, a young volunteer with our partner MissionEurasia, is dedicated to ministry in Eastern Ukraine and leads weekly trips into dangerous territory. They bring God s Word to schools, bombed out villages, army outposts anywhere they find people desperate for hope. They also support small cell groups where they ve planted the seeds of the gospel. Someone in one of these devastated villages once asked Alexey, How much do they pay you to come here? Nothing, he replied. I do it because I want to share hope with my people. In both Russia and Ukraine, kids are discovering God s love for them at summer camps where they re also given a New Testament (top right). Sasha (above inset) was at camp while his family was at home during military attacks. Frightened for their lives after a distressing phone call, he asked the camp director to pray for them the first time he d ever prayed. Later he started reading a New Testament and it touched his life. He took it home with him, determined to invite his friends to read it, too. Thank you for showing God to me, Sasha said. This took place over the course of 12 distributions in more than 150 churches. Seeing the joy on the faces of the Chinese believers when they finally have a Bible of their own is priceless. And knowing those who already own a Bible are committed to sharing the extra one with someone else is just as exciting. That s how evangelism happens in this highly controlled nation, and it s why the church is growing so quickly. The need continues to be overwhelming with pastors desperate for Bibles for their congregations. And the government s growing concern about foreign involvement in their nation means we need to be vigilant and creative in finding ways to support the local church. From 2010 to 2025, it s estimated that 300 million Chinese now living in rural areas will move into cities. We feel blessed to have been able to share God s Word all across China, but we can see the great need to do more. 20 AFRICA MALAWI Population: 16.5 million Language: English, Chichewa Main Religion: Christianity (68%) Scriptures shared: 37, % of Tumbuka villages now have Bibles Of the approximately 880 Tumbuka villages, families in 530 of them have been impacted by the transforming power of the gospel. MALAWI The work God is doing among the Ngoni/Tumbuka people through our partner Good Hope Ministries in northern Malawi is astounding. Cultural bondage has wreaked destruction in these villages for so long, but God is embracing the prodigal sons and changing their hearts and their homes. In our culture, says one Tumbuka man, we treat our wives as beasts of burden, to work hard on our farms and take care of our children. This is because of the money we pay when we marry them. We thought since we bought them, we could use them the way we wanted. But you have taught us this is not God s way and we should stop it immediately. Another man says, I urge you, my fellow villagers, to take these teachings seriously because many women are living a miserable life. Our children are spending the nights in the bush because they are afraid. Men are taught that God has a most important, meaningful role for them as fathers. He wants them to protect their family, to provide for them, to love them. Tumbuka families are being totally redefined because of God s Word. The shift is like night and day from anger to joy, war to peace, and from darkness to light.

26 Management s Report The Audit Committee and the Board of Directors review and approve the annual financial statements. In addition, the Audit Committee meets with financial officers of The Gideons International In Canada and the external auditors, and reports to the Board of Directors thereon. The Audit Committee and the Board of Directors also review the annual report in its entirety. One item to note is that we deferred approximately $1,110,000 worth of restricted donations received toward international campaigns that will occur in the subsequent fiscal year. These donations will hit revenue in the financial year, and thus be matched to their corresponding expenditures.
