Jesus said to His disciples: 'I am the liue vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more. You are pruned already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you. Make your home in me, as I make mine in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off fi'om me you can do "I am the Vine, you are the branches" nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has be~n thrown away - he withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire, and they are burnt. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask what you will and shall get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you shoujd bear much fruit, and then you will be my disciples.' IGNATIUS STAINED GLASS WINDOW You may have noticed the repaired stained glass window of St. Ignatius is now in place, (thanks to the Friends of SFX Church,) situated in one of the old Confessional doors. The lighting of this window will be switched on during 'the Victory in Europe' Remembrance weekend after the Sunday, 10th May Mass. So please do your best to."tav for snme refreshments. SUNDAY COLLECTION: Last Sunday's collection was received ( on the plate and in Gift Aid). Thank you for your continued generosity. CHURCHES TOGETHER: Newsham & West Everton Council of Churches SFX Church will be celebrating the liturgy of the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday evening 14th May with Mass at 7.30pm (there will also be the 12 noon Mass on this day) and the local churches have all been invited to come along. Rev. Henry Corbett will be giving the homily. We are all invited to go along and give our support to 'Churches Together' and its' commitment to prayer and well-being of all the local community. He is the vine and we are its shoots and branches. Faithful to God's word, each of us will grow at our own pace, maybe only gradually producing the fruit of faith and love. What matters is that we remain in Christ, without \>."hom we can do nothing. Our living relationship with him spans morc than t\\'o-thousands years of history. It exists forever and endures lmto eternity. The heart of God IS big, and the table of God is wide. All are included in the love of God; tbere are neither insiders nor outsiders. Today we pray for those who find it difficult to believe in God. MAYlS THE MONTH OFMARY The Rosary is the story of the New Testament. Through the beads we follow the life of Mary and Jesus. We follow Mary from the day the Archangel Gabriel came to ask her to become the Mother of Christ, to the day she was crowned Queen of Heaven. We follow Jesus from the moment the Holy Spirit came down on Mary, through hjs childhood, his cruel death on the cross, the joy of Easter when he rose from the dead, to the day he ascended to Heaven in glory. Mary waits for your prayers. 1I you speak to her she always listens She is our mother. \ hen you pray the Rosary, begin by telling Mary what you would like her to use your prayers for - and then th.ink about the stories that are hidden in the beads. 7 On August 15, last year, the second full day of his apostolic journey to South Korea, Pope Francis travelled from Seoul, the nation's capital, to Oaejeon, the nation's 5th~ l argest city, where he celebrated Mass in World Cup Stadium. Preaching before an estimated 50,000 gathered in the stadium, Pope Francis said that "Mary's Assumption shows us our own destiny as God's adoptive children and members of the body of Christ. Like Mary our Mother, we are called to share fully in the lord's victory over sin and death, and to reign with him in his eternal Kingdom." "True freedom is found in our loving embrace of the Father's will... From Mary, fu ll of grace, we learn that Christian freedom is more than liberation from sin. It is freedom for a new, spiritual way of seeing earthly realities. It is the freedom to love God and our brothers and sisters with a pure heart, and to live a life of joyful hope for the coming of Christ's Kingdom." Pope Francis invoked Mary's intercession as he called upon Korea's Christians to hand on their legacy of faith and "combat the allure of a materialism that stifles authentic spiritual and cultural values and the spirit of unbridled competition which generates selfishness and strife. May they also reject inhumane economic models which create new forms of poverty and marginalize workers, and the culture of death which devalues the image of God, the God of life, and violates the dignity of every man, woman and child." Invoking Mary as Mother of Hope, the Pope called hope "the antidote to the spirit of despair that seems to grow like a cancer in societies which are outwardly affluent, yet often experience inner sadness and emptiness. Upon how many of our young has this despair taken its tolll" As we pray this month asking for the intercession of Our Blessed Lady for Christians trying to proclaim the gospel message in secular cultures we could usefully reflect on the words of the Holy Father to the people of Korea.
