1 WM760: Readings in Missions Professor: Rollin G. Grams Semester: Fall, 2017 General Comment: This independent study, reading course exposes students to thinking and reading on mission topics in several areas: the Bible and missions, the history of missions, theology and missions, missions and the local church, missions and ecclesiastical organizations (denominations and mission agencies), missions and world religions, mission to a particular context, and the practice of missions. Relation to Curriculum WM760 counts towards the elective requirements in Christian Thought for the M.Div. and MA degrees. Objectives and Course Design Students choose this course in order to be able to focus on reading in mission studies: this is a course guided largely by the reading chosen for the semester. The course is intended to give students a sweeping overview of general areas in mission studies rather than focus on any particular one of them. This fulfills the purpose of opening up a wide area of ongoing reading in missions to students to pursue beyond this course and seminary. Overall, a focus on the role Scripture plays in missions draws the reading together, although the reading covers more than this single topic. The bulk of time spent on this course is with the reading, along with some direction/discussion of the reading through tutorials. Students will read about 3,000 words, keep notes on the reading, and engage the reading. They will also meet for approximately six hours with the professor in person on campus and/or by Zoom. Meeting times will be set up by the professor once the roster of students has been established and under the guidance of Registration (although Registration will assign us dates to meet). Through this course in particular, students should: Have an understanding of general areas of mission studies and be able to engage discussion in each; Be oriented to a program of further study in missions relevant to their ministry; Gain critical tools for reflection on mission practice; Appreciate the missional window into other areas of study for their degrees: in particular, Biblical studies, Church history, theology, ethics, and ministry practice. Relation to the Seminary s Mission Statement Mission studies is a general field of study relevant to all areas of the curriculum. This course will, therefore, contribute to all the points noted in the seminary s mission statement, for which see: Communication 1

2 The course uses Sakai as a platform for class discussion and uploading assignments. Please write questions about the class to me through the Sakai site ( Messages ), but be sure to have the go to my actual by adding a copy to rgrams@gordonconwell.edu. Otherwise, the message just sits on the Sakai site. Of course, more personal communication should not go to the entire class or Sakai site but directly to my address. Course Requirements A. Reading Requirements: 1. Complete the required reading for the course by filling out the following reading report and returning it via to the professor by December 3. This is worth 10% of the final grade. Guide for Self-Grading Reading Participation in the Course Grade A B C Level of Reading Careful reading and engagement with the text. Good notes taken for future use. (Possibly additional reading done in the book or on the subject.) Careful reading and engagement with the text. Underlining of books and occasional notes taken. Complete reading of the text. Very little skimming. Some engagement, a little underlining, no notes. 5

6 D Complete reading of the text. Some sections skimmed. Inadequate engagement and underlining. F Incomplete reading of the text. ( F grade for entire course)* *NOTE: While the reading assignment is figured at 10% of the final grade, the reading for this course must be completed to the 90% total of pages required in order to pass the course. The course goals are to cover the breadth of mission topics and to read about 3,000 words. See the bibliography to choose additional reading to meet this requirement. If a student wishes to substitute required reading for something else, this may be discussed. For example, if a student has previously read a book or is involved in some particular missional project, some alteration in the reading may be possible. In a field such as missions, reading can be theoretical or pragmatic, historical or contemporary, theological or pastoral, academic or inspirational. Students will read within certain mission categories and issues that are presented in the following bibliography. All reading on the course must be fresh material to the student: do not count reading completed prior to this course. One further note about the reading, which is mostly a collection of academic resources on mission topics. While in a seminary course the reading may be more on the academic side, students are asked to read one mission biography in the mix (Stewards of Grace) and so approach the academic issues from a narrative, historical, contextual, biographical, and inspirational direction. 2. At the end of reading each required book, students are asked to post some (5-10) take-away points on the forum, including page numbers. This is a completion grade. Students should review what others have captured from the reading and are encouraged to engage further with each other on the forum. This work will prepare everyone for group sessions. 3. Be prepared to discuss the reading in our group sessions in class or on Zoom. B. Writing Requirements: Write 3 book reviews, each worth 30% of the final grade. Each review is due at the end of the session devoted to that subject/book (see course schedule). Submit via dropbox on Sakai. Students are to write 3 book reviews for grading in the course. Each review is to be about 2,000 words in length (about 8 pages double-spaced). These are short essays because the focus in this course is not research but wide reading. Unlike typical reviews that give most of the space to reporting the content of the book, these reviews are to assume readers have themselves read the books; thus, the space is to be given to engaging the book on at least 3 points of interest to the student. Engagement with the reading should be academic, and therefore it should be by exploring the points through: Biblical, historical, theological, ethical, anthropological, and/or sociological engagement, and/or by critical reflection on mission practice (as appropriate). For the book reviews, choose from: Goheen, Stott, Schnabel, Murray, Sookhdeo, and Neill. Grading Guidelines for Reviews Comments: 6

7 Content and Learning: Evidence of a grasp of the content of the book; understanding of the arguments, material, and conclusions; correct representation of the author s arguments and conclusions Analysis: Ability to organize the content of book for analysis; insightful comments on the arguments. Critical Strengths: Demonstration of an ability to engage with the material critically through access to new information, logical considerations, attention to methodology, etc. Writing and Argument: Well written essay (structure, clarity, good grammar, good detail, correct observations, etc.) GRADE for This Assignment: C. Class Meeting: This course is set up as a directed study, but it may involve any number of students. Our goal is to have a total of 6 hours class interaction with the professor during the semester. Given the uncertainty about enrollment, different approaches might be taken to class meeting times and places. It is possible that we will meet as a group on campus during the semester (most likely in November) or by Zoom as a group or even individually. The professor will be abroad for part of the semester. correspondence is an alternative way to meet as well. Once enrollment in the course is clear, we will discuss ways to meet during the semester. This is a requirement of the course. 7

17 Syllabus Addendum Academic Standards Cheating and plagiarism are considered serious breaches of personal and academic integrity. Cheating involves, but is not necessarily limited to, the use of unauthorized sources of information during an examination or the submission of the same (or substantially same) work for credit in two or more courses without the knowledge and consent of the instructors. Plagiarism involves the use of another person s distinctive ideas or words, whether published or unpublished, and representing them as one s own instead of giving proper credit to the source. Plagiarism can also involve over dependence on other source material for the scope and substance of one s writing. Such breaches in academic standards often result in a failing grade as well as other corrective measures. For more information, please consult the Student Handbook. ADA Policy The seminary complies with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. A student with a qualifying and authenticated disability who is in need of accommodations should petition the seminary in accordance with the stated guidelines in the Student Handbook. Cancellation of Class In the event the seminary has to cancel a class meeting (impending storm, professor illness, etc.), the Registration Office will send out an (via the GCTS account) notification to all students registered in the respective course. If the cancelation occurs the day of the scheduled meeting, the Registration Office will also attempt to contact students via their primary phone contact on record. The professor will contact the students (via GCTS account) regarding makeup. If a weekend class is cancelled, the class will be made up during the scheduled Make-Up weekend (see the academic calendar for the designated dates). For more info, consult your Student Handbook. Extension Policy Arrangements for submission of late work at a date on or before the end date for the semester as noted on the seminary s Academic Calendar are made between the student and professor. Formal petition to the Registration Office is not required in this case. This includes arrangements for the rescheduling of final exams. However, course work (reading and written) to be submitted after the publicized end date for the semester must be approved by the Registration Office. An extension form, available online, must be submitted to the Registration Office prior to the stated date. Requests received after this date will either be denied or incur additional penalty. For a full discussion of this policy, please consult the Student Handbook. Grades Faculty have six weeks from the course work due date to submit a final grade. Grades are posted on-line within twenty-four hours of receipt from the professor. Students are expected to check their CAMS student portal in order to access posted grades (unless instructed otherwise). Those individuals who need an official grade report issued to a third party should put their request in writing to the Registration Office. 17

18 Returned Work Submitted hard-copy course work will be returned to the students if they provide a selfaddressed and postage- paid envelope with their final work. Work submitted without the appropriate envelope will be destroyed after the grade has been assessed and issued. Virtual Writing Center Free assistance in writing papers is available to students through the Virtual Writing Center at Gordon Conwell. The Virtual Writing Center is staffed by Gordon Conwell graduates, or writing tutors with specialized knowledge in writing and/or ESL. Generally, this service is available to CT500 (Introduction to Theological Research) CO501 (Introduction to Counseling Research) IS502 (Theological Research and Writing) If you enrolled in GCTS before Fall 2008, you were not required to take one of the three prerequisites above, and you may request access to the Virtual Writing Center. Also, ESL writing tutors are available to ESL students even if they are not currently enrolled in a degree program. If you do not meet one of these qualifications, but feel you would benefit from using the Virtual Writing Center, contact us and we will evaluate your status. writingcenter@gordonconwell.edu for more information. 18
