1 A Mighty Good Season for Engaging in Ministry Lent, Confirmation Classes, UM Army and more What do the Lenten Season, confirmation classes and UM Army all have in common with one another? They are all ways and means by which we, at First United Methodist Church, seek to engage people in the church and in the wider community, in coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ, as their personal Lord and Savior. Wednesday, February 10 th is Ash Wednesday, and marks the beginning of the Lenten Season, a time of reflection, penitence and preparation for Easter the Church s celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Join us in preparing hearts and minds as we embark upon a journey together, A Time to Remember, A Time to Forget, A Time to Look Ahead. In Sinton, Texas, home of the mighty Sinton Pirates, we like to praise God, honor and give thanks for our children, youth, parents, teachers and seasoned senior citizens in other words, e erbody who s somebody! We also like to get ready for County Livestock shows as well as days and nights hanging out at the rodeo. Did I leave out anything? Oh yeah, we also look forward to Super Bowl Sunday, hanging out with and getting together with dear, true friends. Sinton is a great place to be at this time of the year, especially as we look forward to and prepare for Sinton s 100 th Anniversary celebration. More about that celebration is coming your way, but it wouldn t be a bad idea to mark your calendars now for Saturday, October 15, Continue to be blessed in this New Year, because God has so much in store for us as God s people. Remember to keep loved ones close; care for the neighbor and stranger as if they were your own flesh and blood, and most of all keep God near in your heart. Hear this word for your life from The Message Bible, James 4:7-10: 7-10 So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it s the only way you ll get on your feet. In Christ Service, Always and Forever Pastor Rosie Confirmation Classes are beginning soon for youth, ages If you know of a youth who would like to be confirmed in The United Methodist Church, please contact Pastor Rosie or Mary Anne Hartung, Youth Director. 4 GREETINGS FROM YOUR WESLEY NURSE February 2016 Seasons for Wholeness Message- Sleep When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Proverbs 3:24 Sleep is essential to your well-being. It is necessary for the body to recharge its batteries, heal its wounds, rest the spirit, and regroup for another day. Everyone needs a slightly different amount of sleep but everyone needs good quality rest. This means deep, uninterrupted sleep for at least six or more hours a night. Without good sleep you will experience fatigue, moodiness, irritability, poor memory, decreased dexterity, decreased energy level, and possibly depression. Whether related to stress, illness, or just a long day, people often have difficulty falling asleep. Establish a bedtime routine that prepares you and your mind for sleep. The room should be dark, a comfortable temperature, and quiet to allow the mind to relax. A light snack of carbohydrates (yogurt, apple, cheese, or granola) before bed may be helpful but heavy spicy foods, alcohol, or caffeine will keep you awake. Remember a bedtime prayer for additional comfort and relaxation. I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalms 4:8 Sleep is important for every age but the best amount for healthy, active minds and bodies will differ. Infants need to sleep an average of 16 hours a day to keep up with the body s demands as it grows. Preschool children often need 11 hours a day, School age children wok best at 10 hours with teens somewhere around 9 hours and adults between 7-8. The right amount of sleep creates effective people and productive activities. Are you getting enough sleep? So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. Hebrews 12:12 Sleep apnea, a repetitious stop and start in bedtime breathing, will cause chronic fatigue which then impacts clarity of thinking and levels of activity. A variety of issues such as weight, snoring, alcohol intake, or physical make-up may cause this condition. If you are consistently tired after a long night s sleep you may not be getting sufficient oxygen during sleep. Consider seeing a physician as this treatable condition is a risk for high blood pressure and severe cardiovascular problems. Many things can cause a poor night s sleep also: excessive napping, physical ailments, excessive worrying, or even hormonal changes. If sleep problems occur more than three times in a week, consider seeing your doctor. Conditions like restless legs or hot flashes can be addressed medically. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Sleep recharges the body and allows it to heal both physically and mentally. During illness, sleep heals the body battle infection or disease by focusing its energy on healing. During sleep, the body shuts down the mind to give it rest from the challenges and trials of the day. Without sleep, people become short-tempered, are quick to anger, make poor decisions, and generally have a bad day. Get a good night s sleep and wake up with a cheerful heart.
