Editor s note: this article is adapted from a chapter of Dr. Lisle s new book, Taking Back Astronomy. While some people consider astronomy to be a weak area of creation-origins study, this fascinating just-released book contains enough intriguing content to cause even the most hard-hearted of our day to stop and consider the book s eye-opening findings. It is not commonly known that many of the Bible s statements about astronomy went against the generally accepted teachings of the time. Undoubtedly, many of these verses would have seemed counterintuitive, and may have been difficult to believe when they were first written. Modern science, however, has confirmed what the Bible has taught. As in all things, the Bible is absolutely correct when it teaches about the universe. The earth is round Consider Isaiah 40:22 which mentions the circle of the earth. This description is certainly fitting particularly when the earth is viewed from space; the earth always appears as a circle, since it is round. Curiously, many astronomy textbooks credit Pythagoras (c B.C.) with being the first person to assert that the earth is round. However, Isaiah is generally acknowledged to have been written in the 700s B.C. The secular astronomers before the time of Pythagoras must have thought the Bible was wrong about its teaching of a round earth, yet the Bible was exactly right. 2 continued from page Indeed, the earth does float in space. We now have pictures of the earth taken from space that show it floating in the cosmic void. Universe expansion The Bible indicates in several places that the universe has been stretched out or expanded. For example, Isaiah 40:22 teaches that God stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. This would suggest that the universe has actually increased in size since its creation. God has stretched it out. He has expanded it (and is perhaps still expanding it). This verse, too, must have seemed very strange when it A stellar guy! You wouldn t think that an astrophysicist (that s an astronomer who s taken a lot more math!) would be able to communicate at a level that even a young person would understand. But with Dr. Jason Lisle (the author of the article above), that s just not the case. Dr. Lisle has been flying all over was first written. In fact, secular scientists once believed that the universe was eternal and unchanging. The idea of an expanding universe would have been considered nonsense to most scientists of the past. It must have been tempting for Christians to reject what the Bible teaches about the expansion of the universe. Perhaps some Christians tried to reinterpret Isaiah 40:22, and read America, giving superb, well-illustrated talks on astronomy, dinosaurs and biblical authority to groups young and old. When he s in the office, Dr. Lisle has been putting the finishing touches on the first presentation for the new planetarium inside the Creation Museum, and writing for our new magazine (see p. 6). Although Dr. Lisle will be busier here in the office, he will still be available to speak on a limited basis. When the world believes one thing, and the Bible teaches another, it is always tempting to think that God got the details wrong, but God is never wrong. Today, most astronomers acknowledge that the universe is indeed expanding. The number of stars Genesis 22:17 teaches that God would multiply Abraham s descendants as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is on the sea shore. Genesis 32:12 makes it clear that this represents a number which is uncountable by humans: the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. These are excellent analogies. Clearly the sand of the sea and the stars in the universe cannot be counted exactly by humans, though of course, they can be roughly estimated. It was not always believed that the stars were so numerous. The astronomer Claudius Ptolemy (A.D. 150) cataloged 1,022 stars in his work The Almagest. The total number of stars that can be distinctly seen (from both hemispheres under ideal, dark sky conditions) with the unaided eye is around 10,000. Powerful telescopes today allow us to estimate that our single galaxy alone contains over 100 billion stars. And astronomers believe that there are more galaxies in the visible universe than there are stars in our own galaxy. Modern science certainly confirms Genesis 22:17. Confirming the Bible Today, the reliability of the Bible is increasingly attacked. Can we really trust it in our modern age of technology and science? As we have seen, science is not an enemy of the Bible. On the contrary, modern science has already confirmed much of what the Bible teaches about astronomy. Many of the biblical teachings are now accepted in science textbooks. As AiG President Ken Ham has written so often (and which is the theme of the year for AiG in 2006 see the top of page 1), Christians need to take back those fields of science, like astronomy, which have been hijacked by evolutionists in order to promote their secular worldview. 2

Transformation is the word of the day at the Creation Museum. Contractors just installed scenery for two major exhibits: Culture in Crisis and Graffiti Alley (right). Because an exhibit fabrication company built them offsite (according to our designers specifications), it only took a couple of days for blank walls and two empty rooms to morph into city alleys and a typical suburban home. Meanwhile, crews are building mysterious-looking structures all along the Creation Walk ramp. Another odd-looking structure (left) provides the framework for part of Adam s post-eden home, which was designed in what is best described as a beehive style (a structurally sound design which would have been easily constructed with few tools and laborers). As this newsletter was going to print, our own fabricators and painters were rapidly finishing our Dragon Hall bookstore (with a medieval castle theme), complete with low-relief dragon sculptures, stainedglass windows, and a magnificent fireplace. This month, the bookstore will open here at the museum site (adjacent to the AiG headquarters). Creation Museum Update The new bookstore and future Creation Museum are located at exit 11 off I-275 in N. Kentucky Did you know that the Creation Museum in Northern Kentucky (west of the Cincinnati Airport) is just a 7-hour drive from downtown Atlanta? The Creation Museum is strategically situated! Within a one-day drive of 2/3 of the U.S. population! Our family has been on a lean financial diet for over two years. I travel for my job, and have been spending evenings in my hotel rooms reading AiG articles and listening to debates and presentations from the website s media section. I was raised with a strong biblical foundation and then fell away for the Battered no more Thank you very much for your web article on the new fish fossil [Tiktaalik]. It shook me up when I read about it in Time magazine, but (then I) heard about your website on a New Zealand Christian radio station. Museum evangelism While many AiG supporters await the opening of our Creation Museum (2007) so that they can take unsaved family and friends on a tour and hear the gospel, there are other kinds of museum evangelism going on. For example, in many science museums around America, creationists are giving tours to counter the evolution propaganda so prevalent there. Here is another kind of museum outreach that is happening in England: Just wanted to give you some encouraging feedback on an AiG publicity exercise we staged yesterday. The Science Museum in London is currently hosting an exhibition all about aliens under the banner heading When Will They Contact Us? Since the assumption that aliens exist is based on an implicit acceptance of evolutionary dogma, I felt that AiG literature was just the thing to steer visitors away from such foolishness and point them towards God. I recently purchased 500 copies of your booklet Is There Intelligent Life in Outer Space? A fellow AiG enthusiast, Duncan, and myself stood last 25 years. Your website has done so much good in my life and has played a major role in bringing me back to Christ. Thank you so much for helping me see that at long last, the Word of God is trustworthy... back to the opening statement. E. 12 When Christian leaders reinterpret creation to fit in millions of years, they have undermined the Bible. Did you know? Church leaders and creation Did you know that some Genesis compromisers claim that most of the church fathers of the early centuries after Christ didn t believe the days of creation in Genesis chapter one were ordinary days? Well, a number of biblical creation scholars have thoroughly researched what these church fathers believed. They found that the majority of church fathers either specifically stated the days of creation were ordinary days, or that the universe could only be a few thousand years old. In fact, when you look at 18 centuries of biblical scholarship beginning from the time of Christ you will discover that (by far) the majority of biblical scholars believed that Genesis taught the creation days were literal days. They insisted the universe could only be thousands of years old. The reason most biblical scholars of the past 200 years believe the creation days were not ordinary days has nothing to do with what the Bible clearly states in Genesis 1. What s their reason? It s because they have been influenced by secular scientists to believe in an earth that is millions of years old. When Christians (especially leaders) reinterpret the days of creation to fit in millions of years, they have undermined the authority of the Word of God and made fallible man the authority.
