APF News and Prayer July to September 2017 Inside: In the UK A Messenger of Peace in D. R. Congo Only the Hyenas are Full Something Sweet from Burundi Let There Be Latte Enabling effective ministry in Africa

From the UK Coordinator Welcome to July 2017 edition of News and Prayer! In the last edition of News and Prayer, we introduced the three strands that describe how APF works with our partners to enable effective ministry in Africa: Pastoring of Pastors Flourishing Communities Hearing African Voices Normally, Dave and I write News and Prayer from the APF office in Canterbury, but this edition marks a significant change as we ve tried to provide a much larger platform for hearing African voices. We asked key African partners to contribute articles that share their stories, report on recent ministry activity and introduce readers to the realities of life and faith in Africa. You see, at APF we know just how important it is to tell your story and find opportunities to learn from each other. Contributing to this edition of News and Prayer are Rev Stephane Makata from D. R. Congo, Rev Alfred Wonyaka from Uganda, Rev David Kereto from Kenya and Yves Ndayikunda from Burundi. We hope that from now on, you will be able to hear African voices in the pages of News and Prayer coming through more strongly. Many thanks for your continued support for APF as together we enable effective ministry in Africa. 3 In the UK evitabu Update A quiz night was run by one of our new APF Champions, Alison Oliver, at Whitstable Baptist Church, Kent to raise the profile of APF APF Champions Thank you to everyone who has contacted us interested in becoming an APF Champion. The training is scheduled for late October but there s still time to sign-up if you are interested in becoming a Champion. Following the success of the 2015 Lycra Challenge sponsored bike ride, later this year, Dave will again be donning the lycra to raise funds for bicycle grants for rural African pastors. This time, he s inviting APF supporters, up and down the country, to do the same. You choose when, where and how far to ride but use the opportunity to raise the profile of APF, telling the story of how a simple tool like a bicycle can enable more effective ministry in Africa. Please contact the APF office if you would like to participate. Thank you so much for all the positive and encouraging correspondence and donations following the Introducing evitabu article in the last edition of News and Prayer. We are very grateful. We are excited to report that computer programming expertise to develop the evitabu app has now been offered to APF without charge by supporters, Jonathan Haddock and Michael Berry. Working prototypes will be available by the autumn and the pilot launch of 50 tablets is scheduled for February Practical and project management support is also being provided by Next Leadership. Gifts left in wills We are grateful to supporters who remember APF in their will. Recently, we have received bequests from Miss Lynda Beryl Pembleton Miss Margaret Louise Snodgrass We thank God for the lives of these faithful and generous friends of APF. The funds will enable APF to plan with greater financial security and confidently move forward with projects such as evitabu, Daily Bread and the reprint of our Swahili New Testament commentary sets. 4 In Africa Audio Bibles For Refugees Bibles for Africa Photo credit: George Verwer Since 2015, APF has been working with George Verwer (pictured) from Operation Mobilisation Special Projects to distribute African languages Bibles to APF partners. OM provide the finance, APF provide the African church networks to manage the distribution. It s a win-win-win arrangement for OM, APF and our partners in Africa! So far, several thousand Bibles have been distributed in Rwanda, Uganda and Malawi. George writes, Bless You! It is good to work in partnership! Book by Book from Biblical Fameworks When they fled their homes in South Sudan for the relative safety of the camps in northern Uganda, they left everything they owned behind. For many South Sudanese pastors, that included their Bibles. Following requests by contacts in area, APF have organised a shipment of Bari language solarpowered audio Bibles to help pastors leading makeshift churches in refugee camps near Moyo. The solar-powered audio Bibles are manufactured in the US by Renew World Outreach. Thanks to Ken Wright and Biblical Frameworks for the donation of 200 Book by Book Bible study guides (and accompanying DVDs). APF distributed these at the Key Leaders Conference in February and in Malawi in June. Copies are also heading to Uganda in July. 03

A messenger of peace in D. R. Congo Photo credit: Reuters Rev Stephane Makata is an APF partner who coordinates evangelism for the Anglican Diocese of Katanga, D. R. Congo. In a country ravaged by war, he knows the vital role the local African church can play in bringing about peace and reconciliation. He told APF about the training workshops he has been running in the east of the country. Since 2013, fighting between Bantuspeaking farmers and indigenous Twa communities in Tanganyika Province has left many dead. After UN emergency food relief was suspended, we launched a peace and reconciliation project in Nyunzu Territory, a remote area about 200km west of the provincial capital, Kalemie. From the start, members of local Anglican churches were overjoyed at seeing church leaders conduct training of peace messengers to bring an end to the crisis. Through a series of workshops, we trained Bantu and Twa together to be agents of healing for peace and reconciliation in their communities. During the workshops, participants with differences in culture, language, custom and ethnicity learnt to share and accept each other and to be reconciled to each other and to God. Through the scriptures, we emphasised that discrimination had to be combated in order to change behaviours. Sometimes, prejudice had to be identified through role playing. We were also able to engage the community through weekly radio messages in local languages to promote peaceful coexistence. God willing, in July 2017, we will follow up the peace trainers progress. We believe through the Lord's grace, this model can work for other territories in conflict. If we had more resources, we would reach even the warlords hidden in the forest. 6 Let There Be Latte Rev Alfred Wonyaka has simple recipe for transforming his local community in Uganda: Coffee, solar light and microfinance. Hidden away in the fertile valleys below Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda is the Bulambuli Initiative for Sustainable Rural Development (or just BIRD). Established in 2008, by local Anglican church leader Rev Alfred Wonyaka, BIRD is a homegrown community-based Christian organisation that is reducing poverty through organic coffee farming, microfinance and solar projects in marginalised communities. BIRD's primary purpose is to eradicate both spiritual and economic poverty that has dehumanised the local community, explained Rev Alfred. Coffee growing in this part of the world is practiced by all members of the Christian community, but not much of the coffee has benefited the children of God due to limited connectivity with an international market. Christian growers are at the mercy of middlemen who exploit poor coffee growers. Through BIRD, however, Rev Alfred is putting local growers in direct contact with the international coffee market and helping them get a fairer price for their produce. Our desire is to remain faithful to the gospel without being dependent on donations from abroad, he explained. 05

BIRD also offers household solar light and microfinance saving schemes. Rev Alfred describes that through BIRD, 400 community homesteads now have solar light and 100 people have received soft loans to invest. The philosophy is that when we provide a community member with a solar panel, they are required to save at least 5000 shillings [about 1] each month with the BIRD village saving loan scheme. After saving about 20, members can then access cheap loans with minimal interest rates. Rev Alfred (2nd from left) with household receiving solar lighting installation provided by BIRD We have seen lives changed! says Rev Alfred. BIRD has become a mouthpiece of the community. Women without security have access to cheap capital to invest in their land and gender-based violence has reduced. Solar lighting means more children in schools and able to pass their exams without difficulties because they have light at home to revise their work. Rev Alfred also reports that teenage pregnancy rates have fallen. Girls were being taken advantage of during darkness in the night, he explains. Tunyi women attending a BIRD training workshop on solar lighting and microfinace Above all, women testify that their men no longer demand so much sex because of the presence of solar light. Some men used to take advantage of darkness and force women into sex. This meant families were getting very large and this increased pressure on meagre land and resources. Rev Alfred also describes how Bible reading at home has taken off as people now have light to read in the evenings before they go to bed. BIRD is now establishing a Christian primary school that will offer both formal education as well as practical skills. Alfred explains this is important because there are no schools like this in the area. We have acquired four hectares of land, 50,000 bricks, 300 bags of cement and are now good to go! Rev Alfred Wonyaka is an APF partner who, in addition to managing BIRD, works for the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda. To find out more about his ministry, visit the BIRD website or search for Bulambuli Initiative for Sustainable Rural Development on Facebook. Enabling effective ministry in Africa 06

Only the Hyenas are Full APF partner Rev David Kereto is director of Maasai Evangelistic Association (MEA). He told APF how the drought in East Africa is affecting Maasai cattle herders. The Maasai tribe have continued to suffer a lot due to the drought for a long time now. People are staring death in the eye every time a cow drops dead due to the famine ravishing the vast Maasailand. Topoika is unable to speak until we give him a bottle of drinking water. He drinks thirstily then, with a sigh, says, One of them is already lying down and it will not be able to stand again. By tomorrow or the day after, I am not sure any of them will still be alive. Only the hyenas are full, they no longer want any more meat. At night, the fighting over the carcasses has stopped since there is more than enough food for all the scavengers. Food aid distributed by MEA Cattle are the lifeblood of around 150,000 Maasai scattered in homesteads across Kenya's southern Rift Valley. Maasai elders value cattle even more than their wives and children. With few cows left, herders cannot pay for school fees or buy food. Livestock carcasses litter the area When I arrive with my team, Topoika and his five exhausted cows are clustered under a thorny acacia tree. The animals cannot make the daily 20km trek to Ewaso watering point where they could browse on thorny leaves and eat dry grass. The family's livestock are rotting carcasses littered around. We count over 30 dead. The carcasses stink from as far as two kilometres away. At Loita market, Mr Letore, tells me that no one has come to the Maasai's rescue. People want to sell their animals and restock after the drought, but no one is listening. The Kenya Meteorological Department says this year's drought is the worst since Forecasts are grim, with little rainfall expected. We appeal for prayer and support to enable us continue to help the most vulnerable. Rev David Kereto 07

SOMETHING SWEET FROM BURUNDI Yves Ndayikunda is General Director at CEPRODILIC-ADEPE, an APF partner in Burundi. Huge challenges mean many have given up on Burundi, but not Yves. He told us about his ministry. Things were beginning to go well in Burundi. The country was making remarkable advances in development and poverty reduction. Then in April 2015, tensions between the government and the opposition flared up. Protests soon led to violent clashes. International development aid dried up, the economy began to shrink and thousands fled the violence for neighbouring countries. Despite the challenges facing Burundi, at CEPRODILIC-ADEPE we continue an untiring struggle to serve rural communities in need of basic necessities. In Muramvya and Rutana Provinces, we support grassroots communities in the fight against food insecurity through beekeeping and sustainable family farming. We are providing traditional beekeepers with start-up kits including suits, gloves and hives. With this modern equipment, their bees thrive and produce lots of high quality honey. In rural communities, we know that family farmers benefit when they work in step with the natural environment. Alongside teaching agro-ecological family farming, we have established community animal stalls. The pigs and goats produce manure to fertilise the soil. We want the rural communities we work with to become self-supporting. With this in mind, we have a five-year programme to move beneficiary community associations to a level where they can group themselves into simple cooperatives. As a Christian organisation, we believe that this hard time is an appropriate one to witness God's love through caring for the poor. Despite the circumstances, we hope our good deeds among the communities will shine Jesus s light into the darkness. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue to serve the Lord in a context which is not easy.
