1 S.No Questions Answers Read the passage given below carefully: 1.For four days, I walked through the narrow lanes of the old city, enjoying the romance of being in a city where history still lives in its cobblestone streets and in its people riding asses, carrying vine leaves and palm as they once did during the time of Christ. 2.This is Jerusalem, home to the sacred sites of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. This is the place that houses the church of the Holy Sepulchre, the place where Jesus was finally laid to rest. This is also the site of Christ s crucifixion, burial and resurrection. 3.Built by the Roman Emperor Constantine at the site of an earlier temple to Aphrodite, it is the most venerated Christian shrine in the world. And justifiably so. Here, within the church, are the last five Stations of the Cross; the 10th station where Jesus was stripped of his clothes, the 11th where he was nailed to the cross, the 12th where he died on the cross, the 13th where the body was removed from the cross, and the 14lh, his tomb. 4.For all this weighty tradition, the approach and entrance to the church is non-descript. You have to ask for directions. Even to the devout Christian pilgrims walking along the Via Dolorosa - the Way of Sorrows - first nine stations look clueless. Then a courtyard appears, hemmed in by other buildings and a doorway to one side. This leads to a vast area of huge stone architecture. 5.Immediately inside the entrance is your first stop. It s the stone of anointing: this is the place, according to Greek tradition, where Christ was removed from the cross. The Roman Catholics, however, believe it to be the spot where Jesus body was prepared for burial by Joseph. 6.What happened next? Jesus was buried. He was taken to a place outside the city of Jerusalem where other graves existed and there, he was buried in a cave. However, all that is long gone, destroyed by continued attacks and rebuilding; what remains is the massive and impressive Rotunda (a round building with a dome) that Emperor Constantine built. Under this, and right in the centre of the Rotunda, is the structure that contains the Holy Sepulchre. 7. How do you know that this is Jesus tomb? I asked one of the pilgrims standing next to me. He was clueless, more interested, like the rest of them, in the novelty of it all and in photographing it, than in its history or tradition. 8. At the start of the first century, the place was a disused quarry outside the city walls. According to the gospels, Jesus crucifixion occurred at a place outside the city walls with graves nearby. Archaeologists have discovered tombs from that era, so the site is compatible with the biblical period. 9.The structure at the site is a marble tomb built over the original burial chamber. It has two rooms, and you enter four at a time into the first of these, the Chapel of the Angel. Here the angel is supposed to have sat on a stone to recount Christ s resurrection. A low door made of white marble, partly worn away by pilgrims hands, leads to a smaller chamber inside. This is the room of the tomb, the place where Jesus was buried. 10.We entered in single file. On my right was a large marble slab that covered the original rock bench on which the body of Jesus was laid. A woman knelt and prayed. Her eyes were wet with tears. She pressed her face against the slab to hide them, but it only made it worse. On the basis of your understanding of this passage answer the following questions with the help of given options: a) How does Jerusalem still retain the charm of ancient era? b) Holy Sepulchre is sacred to? c) Why does one have to constantly ask for directions to the church? d) Where was Jesus buried? Answer the following questions briefly: e) What is the Greek belief about the stone of anointing? f) Why did Emperor Constantine build the Rotunda? g) What is the general attitude of the pilgrims? h) How is the site compatible with the biblical period? i) Why did the pilgrims enter the room of the tomb in a single file? j) Why did a woman try to hide her tears? k) Find words from the passage which mean the same as :A large grave (para 3), Having no interesting features/dull (para 4) 1 (a) (iv) (b) (iv) (c) (ii) (d) (iv) e) According to Greek tradition, stone of anointing, is the place, where Christ was removed from the cross. 2 during our pilgrimages we have begun to look for whatever makes our heart happy, gives comfort to our body and peace to the mind. It is as if external solutions will fulfil our needs, and we do not want to make any special efforts even in our spiritual search. Our mind is resourceful - it works to find shortcuts in simple and easy ways. 2. Even pilgrimages have been converted into tourism opportunities. Instead, we must awaken our conscience and souls and understand the truth. Let us not tamper with either our own nature or that of the Supreme. 3. All our cleverness is rendered ineffective when nature does a dance of destruction. Its fury can and will wash away all imperfections. Indian culture, based on Vedic treatises, assists in human evolution, but we are now using our entire energy in distorting these traditions according to our convenience instead of making efforts to make ourselves worthy of them. 4. The irony is that humans are not even aware of the (complacent attitude they have allowed themselves to sink to. Nature is everyone s Amma and her fierce blows will sooner or later corner us and force us to understand this truth. Earlier, pilgrimages to places of spiritual significance were rituals that were undertaken when people became free from their worldly duties. Even now some seekers take up this pious religious journey as a path to peace and knowledge. Anyone travelling with this attitude feels and travels with only a few essential items that his body can carry. Pilgrims traditionally travelled light, on foot, eating light, dried chickpeas and fruits, or whatever was available. Pilgrims of olden days did not feel the need to stay in special AC bedrooms, or travel by luxury cars or indulge themselves with delicious food and savouries. 5. Pilgrims traditionally moved ahead, creating a feeling of belonging towards all, conveying a message of brotherhood among all they came across whether in small caves, ashrams or local settlements. They received the blessings and congregations of yogis and mahatmas in return while conducting the dharma of their pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is like penance or sadhana to stay near nature and to experience a feeling of oneness with it, to keep the body healthy and fulfilled with the amount of food, while seeking freedom from attachments and yet remaining happy while staying away from relatives and associates. 6. This is how a pilgrimage should be rather than making it like a picnic by taking a large group along and living in comfort, packing in entertainment, and tampering with environment. What is worse is giving a boost to the ego of having had a special darshan. Now alms are distributed, charity done while they brag about their spiritual experiences! 7. We must embark on our spiritual journey by first understanding the grace and significance of a pilgrimage and following it up with the prescribed rules and rituals - this is what translates into the ultimate and beautiful medium of spiritual evolution. There is no justification for tampering with nature. 8. A pilgrimage is symbolic of contemplation and meditation and acceptance, and is a metaphor for the constant growth or movement and love for nature that we should hold in our hearts. 9. This is the truth! Answers (c) A pilgrimage is like penance or sadhana. But today the pilgrimages have been converted into tourism opportunities. Pilgrims traditionally moved ahead, creating a feeling of belonging towards all, conveying a message of brotherhood among all they came across whether in small caves, ashrams or local settlements. (d) Now-a-days, pilgrimages are turned into picnics as pilgrims travel in large groups living in comfort, packing and tampering with entertainment, even worsening the situation by giving a boost to the ego of having had a special darshan. Now alms are distributed, charity done while they brag about their spiritual experiences! (e) Humans are not even aware of the complacent attitude they have allowed themselves to sink to. But nature is everyone s Amma and her fierce blows will sooner or later corner us and force us to understand this truth. (f) Whenever we try to be clever with the nature, it sooner or later will corner us and force us to understand this truth by creating her fierce blows. (g) Earlier, pilgrimages to places of spiritual significance were rituals that were undertaken when people became free from their worldly duties. We hear them, but we don t listen to them. I was curious to know how hearing is different from listening. I had thought both were synonyms, but gradually, I realised there is a big difference between the two words. Hearing is a physical phenomenon. Whenever somebody speaks, the sound waves generated reach you, and you definitely hear whatever is said to you. 3 mean that you actually understand whatever is being said. Paying attention to whatever you hear means you are really listening. Consciously using your mind to understand whatever is being said is listening. Diving deeper, I found that listening is not only hearing with attention, but is much more than that. Listening is hearing with full attention, and applying our mind. Most of the time, we listen to someone, but our minds are full of needless chatter and there doesn t seem to be enough space to accommodate what is being spoken. We come with a lot of prejudices and preconceived notions about the speaker or the subject on which he is talking. We pretend to listen to the speaker, but deep inside, we sit in judgement and are dying to pronounce right or wrong, true or false, yes or no. Sometimes, we even come prepared with a negative mindset of proving the speaker wrong. Even if the speaker says nothing harmful, we are ready to pounce on him with our own version of things. What we should ideally do is listen first with full awareness. Once, we have done that, we can decide whether we want to make a judgement or not. Once we do that, communication will be perfect and our interpersonal relationship will become so much better. Listening well doesn t mean one has to say the right thing at the right moment. In fact, sometimes if words are left unspoken, there is a feeling of tension and negativity. Therefore, it is better to speak out your mind, but do so with awareness after listening to the speaker with full concentration. Let s look at this in another way. When you really listen, you imbibe not only what is being spoken, but you also understand what is not spoken as well. Most of the time we don t really listen even to people who really matter to us. That s how misunderstandings grow among families, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters concentration-listening is much more than hearing with attention. It requires applying our full mind, giving full space to accommodate what is actually spoken. Ideally we should listen first with full awareness & then decide what is right or wrong. It s better to speak out your mind but that too after listen., with full conc. Most of the times, misunderstandings grow among families, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters as we don t listen to them properly. When cricket teams go abroad the members are allowed to take their wives, even friends along with them. Does this fact distract them or help them to focus on their game in a better way? You are Navtej/, M-114 Mount Kailash, Kanpur M-l 14 Mount Kailash Kanpur February 21, 2016 The Editor Times of India New Delhi Sir Subject- Regarding deteriorating condition of children residing in villages of India Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to bring to your notice the condition of children living in Indian villages. I recently visited my native village and was almost shocked to see the children in the age group 5-14 (the age at which they should have been at school) remained at home, were working in the fields or simply loitering in the streets. All this is because of the poor financial conditions of the families of these children. They hardly earn their bread and butter and that why they are not able to send their children to school. The authorities should take some serious steps to improve their condition. Free primary education facility should be provided to the students and scholarship schemes should also be announced so that they get attracted towards education. I hope the authorities would take some steps to save the future of our country. Yours Sincerely M-l 14 Mount Kailash Kanpur February 21, 2016 The Editor Times of India New Delhi Sir Subject-Distraction of the cricketers from the game Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to discuss the issue of distraction among the players on the field. These days, especially on longer tournaments players travel along with their wives, family members and friends. This is altogether not correct. Players get distracted in the company of spouse and forget to excel on the pitch. Their focus seems to be lost somewhere. They spend their valuable practicing hours with their spouse exploring the city which is not good to their selfperformance or for the team as a whole. They also might be over-concerned about the requirements of their wife and girlfriend. The touring time should be fully focused on the game and its winning prospective instead of other house-hold concerns. Sometimes the players might try to impress their loved-ones sitting in the audience row and lose their focus on the ball and the game. They might also feel the urge to get back to have some more time with their girlfriend instead of having a winning strategy. In my opinion, it is an unwanted expense for the BCCI to spend for the spouse of the players during the cricketing tours. Wives and Girlfriends should not be allowed on cricketing tours. And if it s considered a good custom, why don t we allow our athletes, to do the same. The government should take some serious measures and impose restrictions on the time period of travel for the spouse during the cricketing tours. 6 A number of your classmates (especially those from science and commerce streams) bunk their classes in order to attend coaching centres. Write a debate in words on Tuition at coaching centres is not essential Recent rains and consequent water-logging have increased the risk of malaria and dengue. Write a speech in words to be delivered in the morning assembly advising the students on prevention of and protection against these ailments and the steps that the school has taken to prevent mosquito breeding in and around the school. Imagine you are the Principal of the school. Yours Sincerely Ans TUITION AT COACHING CENTRES IS NOT ESSENTIAL Good morning one and all present here. I m discussing on the topic Tuition at coaching centers is not essential. The mushrooming of coaching centers all over the cities big or small, metros or districts highlight the growing trend of students opting for coaching classes apart from the regular curriculum. Once upon a time coaching was a rare phenomenon, generally unheard of and only taken by those who were weak in their studies. But now it is a way of life for students, aggressively promoted by the teachers and too some extent by the parents also. But does coaching really help in scoring good PONIMA UNIVERSITY

5 marks in school or in competitive examinations? Is it advisable for the school students to opt for coaching? When is the right time to join coaching? Does it take away time of self-study and make student dependent on coaching centre? Or does it give your career the right boost and direction? These are some of the questions which every student and their parents face. The craze for coaching has led to opening of coaching centre in every by lane of Delhi selling dreams of guaranteed success. One can see the newspapers, magazines or roads filled with advertisements like you can 'learn English in 30 days' or 'score 90% in Boards with our guidance' or 'clear PMT/IIT with our two year package'. More and more students are flocking these centers as an alternative or supplement to school teaching. Many experts believe that education is a natural process of learning. For the regular and attentive students coaching is not really required till class twelfth. Thank you all for your patience listening! Ans PREVENTION AND PROTECTION AGAINST MALARIA AND DENGUE Good morning one and all present here. I m here to discuss on the topic Prevention and protection against Malaria and Dengue. As rain brings relief from the high temperatures, we also need to prepare ourself to handle vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. During monsoon, the three most common diseases that people are at risk from are dengue, malaria, chikungunya. The common sources of breeding ground are mostly known to people. It is important that along with civic bodies, people also take care in eliminating breeding grounds of mosquitoes. Stagnant water is the most common breeding ground of mosquitoes. Besides water bodies, puddles near households, office buildings, hospitals, air coolers in which water is not regularly changed, containers kept open for long are mosquito breeding grounds. We can prevent malaria and dengue by sleeping under a bed net - especially effective if they are treated with insecticides, and wearing or using insect repellent and long sleeved clothing if outdoors. We also need to take urgent and serious steps to prevent being bitten from dangerous mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are usually attracted to perspiration, warmth, body odor, carbon dioxide and light. There are several devices on the market that should attract, trap and destroy mosquitoes, along with other insects The civic bodies need to intensify checks near households to eliminate potential breeding grounds. it is equally important to educate the masses on the common causes of vector-borne diseases and how these can be controlled. Citizens participation is important to achieve zero tolerance to malaria and dengue Water-borne diseases are common from food and water contamination. Outbreaks of such diseases are also common in the monsoon. Parents should take care that children are eating hygienic food. In our premises also we have taken measures for the prevention of such dreadful diseases. The school authorities are taking a strict watch over the regular cleanliness of the campus and issuing advisory to the students to keep them alert over the issue. Thank you all and God Bless You! 7 In the year to come (if you have not already done this year) you are going to celebrate your 18 th birthday. Write an article in words on the joys and responsibilities of being eighteen. You are Navtej/. Write an article in words on how we can make India a carefree and enjoyable place for women when they can go wherever they like to without any fear of being stared at, molested or discriminated against. You are Navtej/. TURNING 18: PRIVILEGES AND RESPONSIBILITIES I m turning 18 next month. Eighteen is a magic birthday, a milestone into adulthood accompanied by great privileges as well as serious legal implications. Turning 18 can be such an exciting thing. Odds are you are probably going to be graduating from high school this year. Up until this point, you always knew what the next year was going to hold: one more boring year of school. Well, now high school is out forever. What are you going to do? Get a job? Go to college? In the eyes of the law you finally become a legal citizen and you are no longer treated as a minor would be. It is a state where you start to venture away from your parents and explore life on your own. In many ways the number assigned to adulthood seems quite arbitrary. In fact recent research on brain development reflects that for many, adolescence continues until around the age of 25. To today s teens 18 is considered quite a milestone. It often coincides with a transition to a new phase in life: going off to college, entering the military, entering the workforce full time. At 18 teens of course also gain the right to formerly express a political opinion with the right to vote. When you turns 18 it is perhaps a bittersweet experience that can be anxiety provoking. Along with the rites of adulthood come the responsibilities. Eighteen marks the age at which how teens behave matters, at least in the eyes of the law. It is truly a Cinderella experience; seemingly overnight some behavior that was acceptable can be deemed illegal. It is important that your teen is aware of the difference. On occasion younger teens will tell their parents Just wait until I m 18, then you can t do anything. In many instances their teen is right. What many teens fail to realize is that while 18 magically transforms them into adults, it does not automatically provide them with a sufficient income, housing, transportation, etc. PONIMA UNIVERSITY

6 8 Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow: I saw my mother, beside me, doze, open mouthed, her face ashen like that of a corpse and realized with pain that she was as old as she looked but soon put that thought away,... (a) What worried the poet when she looked at her mother? (b) Why was there pain in her realization? (c) Why did she put that thought away? (d) Identify the figure of speech used in these lines. Far far from gusty waves these children s faces. Like rootless weeds, the hair torn round their pallor; the tall girl with her weighed-down head. (a) Who are these children? (b) What does the poet mean by gusty waves? (c) What has possibly weighed-down the tall girl s head? (d) ldentify the figure of speech used in these lines 9 Answer any four of the following in words each: a) We ve all a great deal to reproach ourselves with, said M. Hamel. Comment. (b) How did Douglas s experience at YMCA pool affect him? (c) Which symbol from nature does the poet invoke that there can be life MAKE INDIA A CAREFREE AND SAFE COUNTRY F WOMEN Women security is now a big question in India. its not a matter of rich poor or urban rural. i do not feel women of any class feel safe and secure in Indian society, apart from behaving yourself, how can we "the people of India" can make women of our society feel safe and secured? i would like to suggest some measures in this regard. WPF would be a team of woman / young and bold girls who will be trained for defensive techniques and would be given certain tools which they can use at the time they catch the wrong doers. These tools are basically electric bars or rods (tasers) which on click of button can make the other person unconscious or numb depending on the voltage rating which is adjustable. Use of distress signal radio frequency chip/device. Now, this device /chip would be part of clothing, accessory for every girl walking on the streets of Delhi at any point of time. This chip has to be modular and can fit with any kind of clothing or accessory. This kind of chip is used in Canada for the parents to track their children location. It s a part of the children s uniform t-shirt collar. Road barricades for halting / trapping runaway vehicles. Now, when the distress signal is helping us track the location of vehicle, then we can simply know where the road blocks can be made or activated for the vehicle to be stopped. Now, pushing the barricades manually onto the middle of that road on which the vehicle is moving is easier or having automatic pop up units installed at all signals can be really helpful. Whichever method is suitable, we can go in for that. Technology is ever growing and can be used for the betterment of the society. Woman self defense programmes. organizing defense programmes for woman in all major localities of India (say Delhi for example) wherein lots of young girls and woman can spend 2-3 hrs and learn self defense techniques which will give them empowerment and they can be ready to face attacks, not only a the time of rape, but also if some wicked boys stalk her, or try eve teasing and molesting or even at the time of domestic violence. These programs will be organized by lady police officers. post attack trauma counselling, fast track courts for wrong doers, awareness programmes for behaviour towards woman & gender sensitization, informing concerned authorities about areas which are not well lit up and isolated, organizing a program for instigating the feeling of one for all and all for one in colleges/corporate offices and workplaces which will help girls/woman deal with the problem of eve teasing and stalking powerfully, Apart from the above mentioned points, there maybe so many other ideas which can make a big difference to the society. But, ideas which prevent rapes, domestic violence, eve teasing, molestation, stalking from happening in the nights, broad daylight need to be focussed as it s the need of the hour. We need to reach out to take opinions of people, especially students, teachers, ngos, involve tv channels, radio channels and spread this message all across the country. The mind of a rapist has always remained like this and will continue to do so. People can be made aware, but can t be guaranteed to have transformed their thinking. The above measures would ensure not changing anything in the present scenario, but only putting in place a system backed by technology. Some fine tuning maybe required making this system practically feasible and it can prove to be a great success. Let s work together and make India a safer place for woman. Be the change you want to see in the world!! a) The poet was worried to see her old mother who looked like a corpse having a dull Face. b)as her mother was very old, so the poet was afraid due to the possibility of losing her mother. c)she wanted to divert her mind from the pain of separation from her mother. d) Similie a)these are the children of Elementary School of a slum b)gusty wave is the lack of happiness in the life of these children. c)the burden of poverty and malnourishment has possibly weighed-down the tall girl s head d)similie and Repetition Ans a) Hauser/Village post master/other Villagers, to Pay tribute to the 40 years of service of M. General was now controlled by Dr. Sadao. So, Dr. Sado was patriotic as well as ethical. Mukesh was a bangle maker from Ferozabad. He was determined, had strong will power. He was optimistic and had a clear idea of achieving his goal to become a mechanic. Whereas Saheb was a ragpicker. He lacked determination, and he did nothing to achieve his goal in life. He was content with his life. Infact he gave up the goals of his life when he got a job in a tea stall. The peddler went around selling small rattraps. They were made of iron wires. He got the material by begging in the stores or at the big farms. He made them himself at odd moments. But anyway, he was not doing a good business. The business of selling small rattraps was not profitable for the peddler. So he had to resort to both begging and petty thefts. It kept his body and soul together. Even so, his clothes were in rags. His cheeks were sunken and he often remained hungry. Life was quite sad and monotonous. One dark evening, the peddler needed shelter for the night. He knocked the door of a cottage. He expected 'sour faces' to greet him. But surprisingly he got the hospitality of an old and lonely crofter. He was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. The peddler was served supper and played "mjolis" with his host. The old crofter was a lonely person without wife or child. He was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. So he tried to make his guest quite comfortable. He offered him supper, tobacco and played 'mjolis' with his guest. Even the peddler didn't expect such a friendly and relaxed reception there. The old crofter took down a leather pouch which hung on a nail in the window frame. He picked out three wrinkled ten-kronor notes. These he held before the eyes of his guest knowingly. Then he stuffed them back into the pouch. Perhaps he was setting a bait for the peddler. Naturally, the peddler played false to his generous host, the crofter. The old man took three ten kronor notes out of the pouch. He then stuffed them back into the pouch. He did all in the presence of his PONIMA UNIVERSITY

8 12 Answer the following in words : Describe the ironical situation in which Silas Marner had to leave Lantern Yard. Within a few days of his arrival in lping, people became suspicious of Griffin. Why? 13 Answer the following in words : Describe Dolly Winthrop as the most lovable character in George Eliot s Silas Manner Attempt a character sketch of Marvel. guest. Perhaps he was setting a bait. The vagabond couldn't overcome the temptation and ran away with the money. Silas Marner is the weaver in the English countryside village of Raveloe in the early nineteenth century. Like many weavers of his time, he is an outsider the object of suspicion because of his special skills and the fact that he has come to Raveloe from elsewhere. The villagers see Silas as especially odd because of the curious cataleptic fits he occasionally suffers. Silas has ended up in Raveloe because the members of his religious sect in Lantern Yard, an insular neighborhood in a larger town, falsely accused him of theft and excommunicated him.much shaken after the accusation, Silas finds nothing familiar in Raveloe to reawaken his faith and falls into a numbing routine of solitary work. His one attempt at neighborliness backfires: when an herbal remedy he suggests for a neighbor s illness works, he is rumored to be a sort of witch doctor. With little else to live for, Silas becomes infatuated with the money he earns for his work and hoards it, living off as little as possible. Every night he pulls his gold out from its hiding place beneath his floorboards to count it. He carries on in this way for fifteen years. He was forced to leave Lantern Yard as falsely implicated of stealing. He looses faith on the house of faith and this leads to Silas's rejection of humanity. His belief in God goes through a series of development that changes his trust in the Church. Griffin, the Invisible Man, arrives at a village inn and takes a room. Wearing dark glasses and bushy side whiskers, and having a completely bandaged head, he causes much curiosity in the village. He never go to church on Sundays. He always kept to himself in the dark. His views were different and people called him bogeyman. Later, it develops that these are a disguise for his invisibility. Getting into trouble over an unpaid bill, he escapes and begins to terrify the people with his mysterious thefts. Wounded, he flees to a former acquaintance s rooms. He reveals that, to get money for his experiments in invisibility, he robbed his father of money belonging to someone else; as a result his father committed suicide. Dolly Winthrop has an instinctive faith that contrasts with Silas' initial distrust of heaven. She represents the best of Raveloe, the community spirit and real interest and concern for others. She is no stereotype; through her discussions with Silas, she reveals a full personality, slow in thought but steady in faith and strong in her sympathy. She was kind, patient lady who aids silas greatly. When she firsts visits Silas - brings him a plate of cakes - begs him to give up weaving at least on Sundays. She also advises him how to take care of a child (eppie) and becomes the god mother of eppie. She also served as silas's trusted advisor in religion and life. Dolly was selfless with her time and energy helping others, overflowing with kindness and local wisdom. She was steady in her faith and strong in her sympathy and helped in the spiritual renewal of silas. She was also instrumental in his transformation from a narrow, selfish, bitter recluse into a truly human, spiritually fulfilled man. Marvel is kind of like the Invisible Man's sidekick. Except he's terrible at it. He abandons the IM and still, he gets pretty nicely rewarded. That's kind of an odd moral. Marvel is something of a stock character when we first meet him. He's the poor, homeless, jobless wanderer in other words, he's a tramp. He wears shabby, old-fashioned clothes, like his "obsolete hat" and he has buttons replaced by pieces of string. The narrator goes so far as to tell us that he does everything in a leisurely manner. He doesn't seem to like work or excitement. Typical homeless guy in fiction. He definitely doesn't like working for the Invisible Man. He carries his stuff, including the money the Invisible Man steals in Port Stowe, but this isn't a super fun arrangement for him. So it's no surprise when he decides to jump ship. Marvel ends up successful. Since the police can't prove whose money he has, he gets to keep everything that was stolen by the Invisible Man PONIMA UNIVERSITY
