Instructions: The walk begins and ends near The Jeremiah Community and Epiphany & St. Mark on Cowan Ave. The walk consists of 14 stations. Some stations will include places for sitting and resting. You may walk at your own pace; alone or with others. The total distance is close to 3km. Depending on how fast you walk and how long you stop at each station, the walk will take between minutes. STATION 1 Walk NORTH on Cowan Avenue to the corner of Cowan and Queen St. STOP at the globe outside of the library. The public library draws a diverse crowd of patrons including some of Parkdale s most marginalized looking for regular things warmth, company, a place to sit and read, do work, check , etc. the kind of people Jesus befriended. This is where Jesus was condemned to death. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, but the world did not know him. He came to his own home, but his own people did not receive him. (John 1:10 11) STATION 2 Walk EAST on Queen St. to Elm Grove Ave. Take a RIGHT on Elm Grove and walk to the mouth of the alleyway. Notice the shops, bars, and cafés catering to people of varying socio economic status. Walk Westward through the alley toward Cowan Ave noticing the work of local graffiti artists along the alleyway. This is where Jesus carried his cross.

STATION 3 When you have arrived to Cowan Ave, cross the street and walk through Masaryk Cowan Park. Find a spot to stop for a moment. This park is where one of our dear friends sat and cried with a man who wanted so badly to enter detox and get sober but could not. Many have fallen down drunk and spent the night here. This is where Jesus fell for the first time. STATION 4 Continue through the park (walking South West), past Dunn Ave parkette (behind apartment buildings) and take a LEFT onto Dunn Ave. Walk SOUTH to 185 Dunn Ave. This is one of the homes of Missionaries of Charity, an international Catholic ministry founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa. The women of this ministry vow their lives to wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor. This is where Jesus met his mother. STATION 5 Continue SOUTH on Dunn and take a LEFT on King St. Walk EAST about two blocks to Spencer Ave. Take a right on Spencer and cross the street to The Abbott café. Walk in and notice the photographs on the wall. Take a rest and have a coffee if you like. The Abbott is named after Anderson Ruffin Abbott ( ). Abbott was a published writer and the first man of colour to graduate as a doctor from the University of Toronto. He lived at 119 Dowling Ave here in Parkdale in a house that still stands. Abbott was born in Canada but left to serve as a surgeon in the

Union Army in the American Civil War. He was a friend of Abraham Lincoln. This is where Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus carry his cross. [Simon of Cyrene is traditionally understood to be from Cyrene, Libya in Northern Africa. He is remembered and revered as man of colour.] As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. (Luke 23:26) STATION 6 Return to King St. and walk back WEST toward Jameson Ave (4 blocks). As you walk, notice the kinds of buildings and shops plotted along King St. When you reach Jameson Ave, turn RIGHT. Walk north on Jameson and notice the garden boxes. The faces you see are real photographs of people who live(d) in Parkdale. You may even find a few faces that you know. This is where Veronica wiped the face of Jesus. Come, my heart says, seek his face! Your face, Lord, do I seek. Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! (Psalm 27:8 9)

STATION 7 As you walk up Jameson Ave, take a rest at one of the garden boxes. These high rise apartments have been home to many new immigrants struggling to start their lives anew. Look at the faces of the people walking by and you will see the faces of our global family. This is where Jesus fell a second time. He had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces he was despised, and we held him of no account. (Isaiah 53:2b 3) STATION 8 Continue walking up Jameson Ave until you reach 177 Jameson. Stop outside of the apartment building. This is where Kim Rivera used to live with her husband and four children. Rivera is a member of the U.S. Army and served 1 tour of duty in Iraq. When summoned to a 2 nd tour she resisted the industry of war and moved to Canada. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney denied Rivera s application for refugee status, calling her and her family bogus claimants. In August 2012, five years after her arrival in Canada, Rivera received another deportation order that demanded she return to the United States by September 20. Upon her return to the United States in September 2012, she was taken into military custody and served a 10 month prison sentence. On December 12, 2013 Rivera was released on grounds of good behaviour. This is where Jesus met the women of Jerusalem. A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For the days are surely coming when they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed. Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us ; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry? (Luke 23:27 31)

STATION 9 Continue walking North on Jameson Ave. As you pass the Parkdale Collegiate Institute, find a bench to sit down. This is where Jesus fell a third time. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. (Psalm 22:14 15) STATION 10 Continue walking North on Jameson Ave until you reach Queen St. Take a RIGHT on Queen and walk 1 block to Close Ave. Stop at the fence by the large graffiti wall. This is where Jesus was stripped naked. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. (Matthew 27:28 31)

STATION 11 Walk East 1 block on Queen St. to Dunn Ave. Take a RIGHT on Dunn and walk down to the mouth of the first alley to your right. As you walk into this alley turn around and face East. You will be able to see the cross from Epiphany & St. Mark in the sky. This is where Jesus was nailed to the cross. It was nine o clock in the morning when they crucified him. The charge against him read, The King of the Jews. (Mark 15:25 26) STATION 12 Return to Queen St. and cross to the North side. Then walk East until you reach the sign for Brown Sugar café (next to Home Hardware). Stop there on the sidewalk and look out across the street. You will notice both the globe in front of the library and the cross from Epiphany & St. Mark in the sky. For God so loved the world This is where Jesus died. God lets the divine self be pushed out of the world onto the cross. God is weak and powerless in the world, and that is precisely the way, the only way, in which God is with us and helps us. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, A Testament to Freedom, 508 "When the crucified Jesus is called the 'image of the invisible God,' [Col. 1:15] the meaning is that this is God, and God is like this." Jürgen Moltmann, The Crucified God

STATION 13 Continue East on Queen St. all the way to Dufferin. As you pass the parkette just before the Dufferin bridge (the amphitheatre style parkette), stop and have a seat. This is where Jesus was taken down from the cross. STATION 14 Return Westward on Queen St. After you pass Rustic Cosmo Café and the Toronto Ambulance station you will notice a large mural. On the other side of this mural is a covered alleyway. Enter the alley and walk a few meters. This is where Jesus was laid his tomb. After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body. Nicodemus, who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. (John 19:38 42) [ END ] Return to The Jeremiah Community on Cowan Avenue.
