Parish Rebuilder ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH WILSON ST. LA MESA, CA June 2018 Monthly Newsletter Volume 18 Issue 6 We invite you to join St. Luke's Lutheran Church Please contact Amy in the office to discuss membership or to arrange an appointment with Pastor Mark: or office-sllc@att.net Office hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Table of Contents Pastor Mark page 1 WSL page 4 St. Luke s Stewards page 5 Worship Text/Birthdays page 6 Parish Potpourri page 7 Prayer Calendar page 8 Worship Teams page 9 Calendar page 10 VBS 2018 Is Coming Preparations are being made for Vacation Bible School 2018 (VBS 2018). This is a major undertaking for St. Luke s Lutheran Church because conveying the word of God and the Christian faith to future generations, younger and older, is at the heart of the church s mission. This year s overall theme is Splash Canyon. The week is awash with Bible stories related to water. Day one pertains to God being with baby Moses in the River. Day two has the People of Israel crossing the Jordan River. Day three sees God heal Naaman in the Jordan River. Day four depicts how God saves Paul from the sea. Day five is Jesus own baptism. Of course, as the catechism teaches about baptism, It is not the water that produces these effects, but the Word of God connected with the water, and our faith which relies on the Word of God connected with the water. For without the Word of God the water is merely water... The word of God does it all. The word of God created all things. The word of God gave all creatures into the care of Adam and Eve. The word of God continually calls sinners to back to God. The word of God made flesh in Jesus brought the promise of the forgiveness of sins and thus eternal life to all humanity. The word of God is what makes Holy Baptism and Holy Communion sacraments. Finally, in a similar way, when the word of God comes into our lives, it recreates us into believers, into members of the body of Christ, to be justified by faith alone. Word and faith are the essence of the Christian life. So, when St. Luke s prepares for VBS as a congregation, we are preparing to give to others what God has given us, namely his life-giving word
which delivers the promise of eternal life to those in whom God creates the gift of belief. Every member of St. Luke s has a part to play. Some will be teachers, some organizers, some cooks, some cleaning, some leading songs, some coaching games, some decorating the church facilities, some praying at home, some reading their Bibles, some inviting friends and family, and so forth. It is truly a whole congregational event seeking to communicate the whole gospel of Jesus Christ which makes all of us holy by faith alone. Which of the five days of Bible stories do you like best? What does your own baptism mean to you? What ways has God s word changed your life? How would your life be without that word? There are too many people in our neighbourhoods who know little or nothing about God s word or God s love for them. So, what part do you want to play as St. Luke s shares that word at VBS 2018? Library Computer and now, Library ipad As many are aware, St. Luke s Lutheran Church has a well stocked library, perhaps even overbooked. Besides those many books packing the shelves, the library also has 3,955 electronic resources available via the church library computer. The computer has a touch screen which allows one to read all the electronic volumes with ease. The computer and electronic library have been accumulated over the past few years through a couple very generous bequests. Have you ever read Augustine or Jerome or others of the church fathers? How familiar are you with Luther s works or those of other reformers? These resources are at your fingertips and easily searchable on computer. Pick a theme and see what the electronic library has to offer. Now, for those who may wish to read in a more relaxed way, one can read all these electronic resources on the library s new ipad. For those so inclined, you can recline in a chair (recliners are next on the library purchase list) and read from this treasure trove of resources on a small, easy-tohold device. I suppose one could view this addition as just another attempt to pad out the church s library. Please talk to Pastor or Amy if you would like to use the library ipad. Sounds Panels Coming Soon Since the renovations of the Lower Level, some of St. Luke s members have been unhappy with the acoustics in the church s fellowship, music, and educational rooms. It seems that various and voluminous voices competitively combined in conversation continually create a cacophony culminating in cranium crushing confusion. Other members, however, did not seem to notice. After years of playing the situation by ear, it was decided at the last congregational meeting after panel discussion and a ringing endorsement to install acoustic panels in all the Lower Level rooms to attenuate unintended Tinnitus. How does that news sound to you? Pastor Mark Thank you to Jillian Barnard & Tom Stubbs for volunteering during the AED training on May 6th.. Maureen O Connor from San Diego Project Heartbeat. 2

4 Women of St. Luke s We are about to enter the wonderful days of summer. Vacations have been planned or are in the final stages of planning and weekends are filled with grilling and hanging out around the pool. The Women of St. Luke s invite you to an Even in the summer the business of St. Luke s goes on. The women of St. Luke s work tirelessly all year. Opportune-A-Tea We often tell you what the WSL board is doing. You may get the impression that the board does everything: not true. WSL is going to be holding an Opportune-A Tea on Saturday, June 23rd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. The objective of this tea is to tell you about services that are performed by women of the church, many of whom are not on the board. We want to encourage every woman member of St. Luke s to feel that she is a part of the WSL sisterhood and her voice is important as well as her service. June 23rd 2pm-4pm We have the summer craft fair coming up June 28, 29 and 30. As you know, WSL sells tickets for chances to win numerous baskets containing great crafted items donated by all the vendors at the show. Plus, WSL Project Day Ladies always donate a quilt to be raffled off. You may not realize that a good portion of the WSL income comes from these ticket sales. Where does the money go? Most goes to local organizations that help families in our area. These organizations know St. Luke s because of the contributions coming from WSL. Please consider buying tickets. Fashion show is still on. Mark your calendars for September 15th, 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Nancy Kearns WSL President Wear your fancy hats RSVP by June 17th
ST. LUKE S STEWARDS This is part of an ongoing look at some of this congregation s STEWARDS, now focusing for several months on our Money Counters. You will read a little of where they came from and how they happen to be at St. Luke s. HOW OFTEN do you hear of a person who is San Diego born and bred. If you are thinking it just might be Robin Wheeler, you are correct! She was born in Mercy Hospital, the second generation of her family to be born there and has been an East County resident all her life. Robin was confirmed at Clairemont Lutheran, later became a member of St. John s Lutheran in El Cajon, moved again (to La Mesa) and has been a member of St. Luke s since She has been counting our weekly offerings since the 80 s. Robin and Roy were married in Roy became a member of St. Luke s in 1978, having come from a Baptist background. The Wheelers had three children: Michele, the oldest, is up north in Etna, California, near the Oregon border; Ryan lives in Fletcher Hills; and, sadly, their third child, Roy III, drowned in a tragic accident some years ago. Robin and Roy have three grandchildren and are very excited about welcoming their first great grandchild, a boy, in August! After graduating from El Capitan High School, Robin enrolled in the San Diego School of Medical and Dental Assistants, graduating in She later furthered her education by becoming a registered dental assistant, passing the California State Test in the early 80 s. She loved her work and was employed in that capacity for some time before retiring. Robin has been involved at St. Luke s in various capacities. Perhaps ten years ago she regularly prepared a light dinner for all who attended the weekly Bible study in the Lower Level, taking care to always provide a varied, healthy menu. She organized dinner groups in the past, and was totally involved with Vacation Bible School. When the Outreach Committee decided to hold a rummage sale in order to have extra budget to do some advertising, Robin was very helpful in coordinating the necessary commitments relative to sponsoring the sale. Without Robin this event would not have been successful! Robin s current schedule includes working mornings at Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Preschool, which still gives her time to pursue her favorite hobby: sewing!! We at St. Luke s are fortunate to have Robin active in her many roles, past and present. Tell her that when next you see her!! 5 Martha Applegate

7 Parish Potpourri It is that time of the year again: time for the annual HOMELESS TREASURES RUMMAGE SALE!! JUNE 23 at CLAIREMONT LUTHERAN. There are flyers in the church office that indicate times and dates when any items you may have can be dropped off. Also, volunteers are very much needed. Please remember, all funds from this sale go to TACO. The sale is probably their biggest fund raiser of the year! The APPLEGATE S granddaughter, JENNY BORST, is spending eight weeks employed by Georgia O Keefe s Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. Her selection is both an honor and a tribute to her gifts as an artist! Later this month, the red wagon will be available for items for school children on the other side of the border. School supplies are needed -- composition books (the lined ones that usually have approximately 70 pages), pencils, glue, small pencil sharpeners, colored pencils. Do you have a graduate in your family? -- from high school, middle school or college? -- call the office and give the info to Amy. Did you know... --It is impossible to lick your elbow, --In the last 4000 years, no new animals have been domesticated. --A snail can sleep for three years. --All polar bears are left handed. --You can t kill yourself by holding your breath. --Women blink nearly twice as much as men. HEIFER International What do you know about Yemen? According to information received from HEIFER INTERNA- TIONAL, it is one of the least understood countries in the world. HEIFER recommends these books about the fascinating history and culture of Yemen, and the role it plays in today s geopolitical world: YEMEN: THE UNKNOWN ARABIA YEMEN: DANCING ON THE HEADS OF SNAKES YEMEN: MOTORING WITH HOHAMMED: JOURNEYS TO YEMEN AND THE RED SEA Does the male in your family like to read?? How about giving a Father s Day gift like no other: a book about Yemen. Remembering the quarter bank in the narthex? All quarters go to HEIFER INTERNATIONAL. Martha Applegate
