1 Excerpts from Luke 5 20 Jesus just an ordinary man? Lesson aims Bible background To help students appreciate the historical reality of the life of Jesus. To provide an engaging learning experience through film and discussion. Lesson outcomes Appreciate the historical context for life in first century Palestine Realise that people responded differently to Jesus Express their own opinion about Jesus power and character. Key verses The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost. Luke 19:10 (CEV) As students watch the segment of the DVD today they will see many of the significant events and characters in Jesus ministry. There are many different kinds of responses shown in the story. Some put their faith in Jesus, others begin to oppose him and some are still uncertain about what to make of him. Students will: Jesus is both powerful and compassionate in his dealings with people. He welcomes sinners, Know about key events in Jesus life children and those in need; he calms a storm, heals the blind and miraculously feeds 5,000 people. The children in the story are beginning to appreciate that this is no ordinary man. The students will, hopefully, have a similar realisation. We see another aspect of Jesus character when he drives the traders out of the Temple courts. In this segment Jesus clearly predicts his death and there is a sense of threat from the religious leaders who do not accept him as their Messiah. Once again, the historical reality of Jesus and his followers is clearly presented. This segment ends with a sense of growing opposition to Jesus and his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. 24 Big questions teacher s manual

Watching the DVD is the main part of the lesson. The introduction and conclusion have been kept very brief and the student magazine page is also fairly simple. Take time to view the DVD yourself before using it in the class. Make sure you are confident about where to stop it for this lesson. See the lesson for details. 3 INTRO CORE BELIEVE IT OR NOT! If you have a copy of the Guinness book of records, tell the students a few examples of amazing feats or some intriguing records that have been set. Alternatively, tell of some examples from the website guinnessworldrecords.com/ Some of these things are hard to believe, but we know they are true because eyewitnesses can say they actually saw it for themselves or they have been photographed or filmed. The things you will hear about today on this film were seen by eyewitnesses and written down. There were no video cameras to record it, but plenty of people actually saw and heard what Jesus did and said. Lesson 3 PowerPoint slides 1. Jesus just an ordinary man? 2. Key verse: Luke 19:10 (CEV) DVD PART 2: JESUS WORDS AND DEEDS Play the DVD from Scene 4 the children argue and fight, to the end of Scene 7 paying taxes to Caesar. This begins at approximately 13 minutes from the beginning. Stop after Jesus talks to the Pharisees about taxes to Caesar and before the Last Supper. This will take approximately 20 minutes. Note: If you are short of time you could stop at the end of Scene 6, after the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Here are the scenes and the references for the segments you will be watching: SCENE 4 1. 4 DISCUSSION Keep this discussion fairly short. Allow students to express their observations and questions. Recall some of the miracles such as the feeding of five thousand, the calming of the storm, the healing of the blind man. Discuss what we learn about the character of Jesus in such incidents as welcoming little children, accepting and forgiving the sinful woman, being angry at the Temple, affirming the poor widow who could only give a little money. Pose some questions, such as: What might happen next for Jesus? Who would he be upsetting by his actions at the Temple? Big questions magazine Distribute the Big questions Sem 2 magazines and ask the students to turn to page 3. The page for this lesson allows students to reflect on the aspects of Jesus power and his character. The page has been kept simple to allow maximum time for viewing the film. Collect the magazines ready for the next lesson. Read the comments during the week, responding if appropriate. PULLING IT TOGETHER LET S PONDER What would have been some of the positive aspects of being a follower of Jesus? Who would have been most attracted to him? Why? 5 EXTENSION ACTIVITIES DRAMA Allow students to choose one of the scenes from the film to recreate into a short drama. Take care that the role of Jesus is treated with respect. music Jesus my Saviour, track 1 of CEP s Big questions Sem 2 CD-ROM. CRAFT Provide students with modelling clay or play dough and allow them in small groups to recreate a scene. CREATIVE WRITING Write on the back of post-it notes the key miracles and the people depicted in the film. Allow students to choose one and give them a speed writing task to imagine themselves there when it happened. Remind them to describe what they saw, how they felt as vividly as possible. Set a 3-minute limit on the writing time. Share what they create with the class. 28 Big questions teacher s manual
6 DAILY BIBLE READINGS AND QUESTIONS This week we will think about some more of Jesus teaching, from Matthew s gospel. This will be an opportunity to introduce the Sermon on the Mount. DAY ONE: matthew 5:1 4, dependence on God Who was Jesus teaching? Why is God pleased with those who depend on him? What sorts of things make us grieve? What helps to comfort us when we are grieving? DAY TWO: matthew 5:5 6, humility and longing for righteousness What is the difference between someone who is humble and someone who is proud? Why would God be pleased with those who are humble? What is given to those who deeply want to obey God? Teacher reflections What worked well? What do I need to follow up? What will I pray about? DAY THREE: Matthew 5:7 8, being merciful How do merciful people treat others? What is a situation in which it would be hard to be merciful? What does God assure those who are merciful? DAY FOUR: Matthew 5:9, peace-making Why does peace-making matter so much to God? When have you seen people make peace? Is it easy or hard to be a peace-maker? Why? DAY FIVE: matthew 5:10 12, persecuted followers Why would people insult those who are followers of Jesus? Describe some examples of times when people might be given a tough time for doing the right thing? How can being a follower of Jesus help us when others insult us?
