1 A YEAR WITH SAINT MATTHEW (Year A: 2014 / 2017 / 2020 / 2023 / 2026) Seminars on the Sunday Lectionary readings for Year A Presenter: Canon Jim Foley St Augustine s Coatbridge. Seminar 8: Addressing the Synoptic Question. After our seminars on the Five Sermons we will pause to admire the entire panorama of the Gospel of Saint Matthew which is presented in the following pages. Included in this overview of Matthew are the chapter and verse references to parallel scenes in the Gospels of Luke and Mark where these exist. This side-glance will give us a first impression of the common ground shared by Matthew and his fellow evangelists and, at the same time, highlight those episodes found in Matthew which are not replicated in Mark and Luke. Our panorama reveals just how distinctive the five Sermons of Matthew s Gospel are. Mark has no more than a fragmentary knowledge of the Sermon the Mount, quoting only a saying about salt and light (Mk 9.50) and a brief statement about divorce (Mk ). Luke does better but he has thinly spread the contents of the sermon throughout his gospel. The Mission Sermon fares no better. Matthew s third Sermon with its seven parables (chapter 13), is much more substantial than the nearest parallels in Mark (chapter 4) which can boast only four parables of the kingdom, and Luke (chapter 8). The Eschatological Sermon shows closer contacts between the three evangelists. And so it goes on. When, however, we turn to the narrative sections in Matthew it is a very different story. All three evangelists show much closer contact with one another. The Narratives of the Passion and Death of Jesus show a quite remarkable similarity both in the sequence of events and in the wording of each passage. There are really only three notable departures from the common ground. Mark and Luke fail to include the death of Judas described by Matthew , Luke makes no reference to the anointing at Bethany in Matthew and Mark passes over in silence the mocking of Jesus by the soldiers in Matthew Apart from that there would appear to be scant difference between them. The implications of such details as these are most elusive and will concern us as we address each Gospel. For the moment we simply take note that this process, usually known as The Synoptic Question, far from being a purely academic exercise, opens many a door to the theology of each evangelist and to the portrait of the Redeemer enshrined in each of the Gospels. The Christ of the Gospel of Matthew sets the highest ideals that, at times, seem beyond our reach. How well Dante understood St Luke s Gospel when he called him the scribe of Christ s compassion. The final column in our analysis of the text of Matthew notes the Ordinary Sunday of Year A on which a particular passage is read in the Liturgy of the Word. Page 1
