DISCIPLESHIP in a Christ-like Church June 2015

Welcome Welcome to our Diocesan Conference the first one we have held in over ten years. It is really encouraging to see so many of you here in Swanwick, and to have such a good mix of clergy and lay representatives all together in one place was a very special year for us as we celebrated our centenary together and helped to create a real sense of coming together as a diocese. A major re-ordering at the Cathedral and Church House was completed, two major funding streams for mission development and youth work were announced, and we had one of our most successful Development Days ever in October. We are moving forward in God s mission together. These next few days will allow us the space and time needed to listen to God, and each other, as we come together as the Body of Christ, in all our diversity, and with our strengths and skills to be equipped in our discipleship in all kinds of ways. Please familiarise yourself with the programme and engage with it. Catch up with friends and make new ones, take time out from your usual activities to refresh, reflect and, I pray, be inspired. + Steven 3
Conference prayer... Loving Father You have called your Church to be A community of missionary disciples. Draw near to us as we draw near to you, Bless our Diocesan conference. Renew and refresh us by your Holy Spirit And equip us to reflect your love in all the world Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. 4
Committed to discipleship Ten marks of a diocese committed to developing disciples: 1. A lifelong journey of discipleship and growth in Christian maturity is supported and modelled by all. 2. The importance of discipleship in daily life is affirmed. 3. Gatherings for worship celebrate the discipleship of all the baptised. 4. Disciples are equipped to help others to become followers of Jesus. 5. Diocesan work on vocations is based on the principle that all the baptised are called into God s service. 6. Good practice in facilitating learning and formation is developed. 7. Gifts of leadership are recognised and developed among all the baptised. 8. Innovation and experiment are encouraged in mission, ministry and discipleship. 9. Specific diocesan policies and plans promote discipleship development. 10. Diocesan resources are committed to the development of the whole people of God. 5
