3 OLYMPIC TORCH PRAYER RELAY Everyone was focused on the Olympic Torch recently as it came into our region. But alongside the Torch programme was an extensive Christian response in praise, prayer and service the most significant being the Prayer Relay. As the torch travelled from place to place, so Christians travelled with it to pray blessing on the next place in line. On 1st June a delegation from Bolton travelled to Liverpool to pray blessings on our region in Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in a meeting led by Curate Tim Watson. The Rt Rev Chris Edmondson, Bishop of Bolton came with Church representatives from Bolton carrying the Prayer Baton that contained the written prayers of the Church in Bolton for the Mersey Region. After some of these prayers were read out, they prayed the fantastic Ffald-y-Brenin prayer of blessing Bishop of Warrington and Bishop of Bolton (See the link on the TFH website home page). John Cavanagh said, It was incredible to receive from brothers and sisters in Christ their heartfelt blessing and the Mersey region church received them with joy. The Bishop of Bolton presented the Prayer Baton to Rt Rev Richard Blackburn, the Bishop of Warrington who received it on behalf of the Church in the region. After praying for the seven areas of influence in Liverpool and the region, it was our turn to pray for the next stopping point for the Torch, Portrush in Northern Ireland. People were then invited to write prayers for the Church in Portrush, and these were collected together and put into the Baton for its onward journey. Les Nuttall, from The Well Fellowship in Orrell Park had the delightful task of carrying the Baton to Northern Ireland, where he presented it to local Christians overlooking the Giants Causeway. Les said, We praised the Lord and read some prayers from Liverpool for Portrush and the surrounding area - this was very well received. I then formally passed the Baton over to Andy and we prayed together holding the Baton. We then had a time of declaration prayers amongst those who had gathered before I read the prayer of blessing at the top of my voice at the top of the hill! John Cavanagh, TFH Prayer, said, How wonderful to have this continuous chain of prayer and blessing passing through our nation. It is a declaration of our intent to see harvest and transformation in our communities. Church representatives from Bolton Welcome to the second issue of Harvest, your new TFH Magazine. 4 NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND WORSHIP AT WEMBLEY STADIUM 2012 In June Dr Jonathan Oloyede presented an inspiring vision at the TFH Leaders Lunch. With great passion he described how he had come to the UK nearly 20 years ago and God had taken hold of his life with a powerful vision to see the United Kingdom touched by God again. Many people know that Dr Oloyede is leading the plan to bring thousands of Christians to fill Wembley Stadium and pray for the nation on 29th September He began by stating that he had not come to invite us to an event. Jonathan described how God called him as a reluctant missionary to the UK. He said that when he first arrived he was disappointed to find that not everyone attended church in Britain! God then started to show him a vision for a fresh visitation of the Holy Spirit in the land. People started to speak to him about the prophecies over the past decades which describe promises of a fresh move of God in the future. Jonathan talked about how he became hungry to see God visit the UK in the way that we have heard of the growth of the Kingdom in Africa and Asia. One aspect he felt particularly passionate about is the need to move the Church from indifference, apathy and unbelief to faith and passion. He described three priorities: We need to unite, pray and preach the Gospel. Jonathan talked about Moses holding his hands up while Joshua and the Israelite army were battling in the valley below. He urged the leaders to see that this was a combination of prayer and work. When Moses got tired, Aaron and Hur held his arms up. He challenged those present to prevail in prayer while those battling in the valley persevered in the battle. He suggested that the international church has been brought to the UK to help hold up the arms of the indigenous church in prayer and help in the battle. Jonathan talked about a prophecy he was given in which the Lord said that the seed of the fruit of the seed sown by this nation would be brought back. He explained that he sees that we are in this season of the seed coming back to the UK under God s direction. THE SEED OF THE FRUIT OF THE SEED SOWN BY THIS NATION WILL BE BROUGHT BACK. Jonathan described how the discussions with Wembley Stadium have progressed extremely positively, with Wembley supporting with cost reductions and even sponsorship support. He reported that thousands of Christians from cities and towns are signing up to come and represent their region. With the reductions in price from Wembley, the individual cost has been brought down to a minimal 10 each. Youth organisations are bringing thousands and denominations are supporting from across the land. Several leaders commented that they are already planning to organise transport for groups to go to Wembley. TFH is planning to co-ordinate coaches to ensure that hundreds from Merseyside can join in this historic event. Jonathan emphasised that the Day of Prayer and Worship is not a one off event in London, but an opportunity for the cities and regions to bring what God is already doing, together for the sake of the nation. If you would like more information about the National Day of Prayer and Worship at Wembley Stadium on 29th September, please go to If you can help organise a group to join the Merseyside group at Wembley, please contact jm@tfh.org.uk National Day of Prayer graphics here and on front cover courtesy of EDITORIAL During June there was very encouraging news of national church growth in the UK. A study from researchers based in Cranmer Hall, Durham estimates that there are at least 5000 new churches since 1980 and a million Christians from black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities. The adult membership of the Anglican Diocese of London has grown by 70% since 1990! In the Liverpool Diocese, Bishop James reported that since 2009 attendance has grown by 6% for adults and 11% for children. Over recent months the growing enthusiasm for prayer has been remarkable. The Church in the UK seems to be eager to pray. Prayer gatherings, prayer batons, prayer schools and prayer nights are filling the calendar with good attendances. There has even been encouragement from the Police to pray for peace to overtake the tfhto quote the report in the Church of England Newspaper: violence on our streets. As Europe shakes economically and socially, it is only right that the Church should be showing the way in prayer. The National Prayer gathering in September at Wembley will be a further step along this journey. Together For the Harvest will be actively promoting a strong representation from Merseyside. Another significant factor is the increasing partnership within the region between local and international believers. God is evidently bringing people from afar to help with the harvest. Evidence shows there is large-scale, long-lasting church growth happening in Britain. Despair is wrong theologically and flies in the face of the evidence. Let us be hopeful, welcoming and expecting: Be Bold! Be strong! For the Lord your God is with you! John Manwell Chairman Together For the Harvest

5 TOGETHER FOR THE HARVEST UNLOCKING THE GROWTH IN OCTOBER MICHAEL HARVEY, AN INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER ON CHURCH GROWTH, WILL BE LEADING A SERIES OF SEMINARS ACROSS THE MERSEY REGION. Michael Harvey has travelled thousands of miles, visited hundreds of churches all over the world speaking to tens of thousands of people on the potential for growth and how the Church can be more effective in inviting people. As one of the founders of the Back to Church Sunday campaign, Michael has visited hundreds of churches all around the world and met with leaders and congregations in dozens of countries. All this has enabled Michael to develop a challenging and insightful seminar to help leaders and churches to unlock growth. Together for the Harvest invited Michael Harvey to talk to church leaders at a recent leaders lunch about the Unlocking Growth seminars. The very positive response has led to TFH and Michael Harvey working with churches around the Mersey region to deliver the seminars in a number of locations: Bootle/North Liverpool - Sunday 28th October, afternoon, Runcorn Monday 29th October, evening, South Liverpool Tuesday 30th Oct, evening, Wirral 1st November Haydock/St Helens to be confirmed. Please encourage your leadership team, small group leaders and outreach teams to consider coming to the seminar in your area. Contacts for your area: North Liverpool Roger Driver rogerdriver@btinternet.com Runcorn/Widnes Mark Finch mark@hopecorner.co.uk South Liverpool Nic Harding nic@frontline.org.uk Wirral Colin Orr colinorr@ntlworld.com St Helens/Haydock To be confirmed jm@tfh.org.uk BREAKING THE GROWTH BARRIERS Together for the Harvest in partnership with Lead Academy is launching a dynamic 18 month learning community. The goal of the interactive journey is for leadership teams to be empowered to revolutionise the way they implement the church s vision. Over the 18 month journey teams will work together and benefit from a number of retreats, learning days, and advice and support from experienced facilitators. The organising team commented, The church in the UK is under unparalleled pressure. Despite recent encouragements, the reality is that over the last 50 years we have moved from normative, to outdated, to marginalised, to irrelevant to the general population. The increasing trend now among a small but significant sector is that the church is disruptive and even offensive to liberal modern lifestyles. As part of the learning community participants will work together through the challenges and opportunities of leading churches in a 21 st Century context. Benefiting from an extensive background in church leadership locally, nationally and in a wider international context, the Lead Academy team are able to utilise the resources of some of the most innovative Christian thinkers and practitioners available. These specialist faculty members are used to compliment, challenge and provoke ideas that are then explored further together as a group. Key themes will cover culture, discipleship, mission and leadership. The outcomes of working together in Breaking the Growth Barriers will include: Focussed and united leadership teams Clarity of vision and strategy A church culture that is committed to supporting that vision A mobilised congregation Church growth and community impact How can I find out more? Please complete and return the initial interest form on the website: and click on TFH. This will not commit you in any way but it will enable a further discussion. 6 RELENTLESS PRAYER Initiated by Riverforce & Merseyside Police Chaplaincy, Prayer Meetings are being organised across Liverpool in support of Chief Constable Jon Murphy s call for Relentless action against gun and gang crime in the city. The first, held at St Andrews Clubmoor, had around 100 people who answered the call to pray, prompted perhaps by the fatal shooting the night before. They concentrated on praying for ministries, churches and communities in North Liverpool after Supt Rowley Moore shared some statistics about the gun crime in the area. Andy Radford and Nick Tissot from Street Pastors, and Keith Hitchman, Force Chaplain for Merseyside Police led the meeting, hosted by Steve McGanity, Vicar at St Andrews. The next, Against Gun Crime and For the Communities it Affects, was at St Marks Church Childwall Valley to pray for South Liverpool. A Relentless Prayer Mail has been set up online whereby people can receive a weekly update on gun crime in the city, so that we may pray specifically and effectively. Force Chaplain keith.hitchman@merseyside.police.uk to add your name to the list. RESTORATIVE JUSTICE, DOES IT WORK? On Thursday 5th April Riverforce (Merseyside Police Christian Support Network) and the Police Chaplaincy co-hosted a panel discussion on the theme of Restorative Justice - Does it Work? to a full gathering of police officers and support staff from Merseyside Police as well as representatives of other local organisations, including Merseyside Probation Service and local churches. Above: Les Nuttall & Keith Hitchman Chaired by Force Chaplain Keith Hitchman, the panel included former gangster turned gang crime consultant Tony Winter, victim of crime Joanne Johnson, Senior Probation Officer Les Nuttall, Prison Chaplain Marion Hawley, and Merseyside Schools Officer, PC Alan Landrum. The evening was intentionally arranged for Holy Week so as to emphasise the restorative power of the Cross. Christians, such as the late Chuck Colson, have been significant players within the Restorative Justice Movement both here in the UK and the States. Many Restorative Justice programmes, such as the Sycamore Tree Project, are rooted in the Gospel. The evening was a great success and well-received by Merseyside Police. Across Merseyside, plans are underway to bring an exciting new youth event to Liverpool. Revolution is a day event consisting of two parts: an all-day conference for young people aged 14-21, and an evening worship party open to all, taking place on 5 th October 2013 at the Liverpool Echo Arena. Led by full time Christian Children s and Youth Worker Vikki Shacklady, the team consists of representatives from major organisations such INTERNATIONAL STUDENT MINISTRY Did you see the recent Angel of Mersey series on BBC2? One of my favourite parts was where the University Chaplain, Rev Dr James Harding, invited a group of Chinese students to Christmas dinner. For some students it was their first experience of the real meaning of Christmas. The Bible is full the importance God places on caring for the needs people who come from other cultures and lands. It is estimated that in the UK we have a million international students and between seven and ten thousand as Urban Saints, UCB, YFC, Hope Revolution and Salvation Army, along with Church representatives and Youth Work practitioners. Revolution is missional in nature, seeking to encourage young people to engage with the world around them, using their God-given talents and abilities to demonstrate God s revolutionary love to their family, peers and wider communities. The event will be officially launched this coming October with Revolution Breakfast at studying in Liverpool during the academic year. ( Each week volunteers from various church groups facilitated by the Anglican Chaplaincy to the University run drop-in centres for a coffee or chat; provide English Language corners and invite international students around for meals. These groups include Friends International Pioneers, Christ Church, Chinese Gospel Church, St James In The City, Frontline and Toxteth Tabernacle and student groups the Liverpool Echo Arena on 20th October. The morning will include a tour of the building, a presentation delivered by the team, and a talk given by Gerard Kelly, confirmed as the keynote speaker for the actual event a year later. The launch breakfast is open to all church and youth leaders, as well as any other interested parties. To make further enquiries, or to confirm attendance, please breakfast@revolution-conference.org such as the University Christian Unions. They also arrange outings to many of Liverpool City areas. 7 News from the Anglican Diocese We are a growing diocese That is the message of a major conference on growth held at the ACC in Liverpool recently. The conference organised to discuss progress on the Growth Agenda and inspire and equip a new generation of leaders to look forward in mission also heard of the massive contribution made to this growth by Fresh Expressions of church. Delivering his keynote address to conference the Bishop of Liverpool, The Rt Revd James Jones said It is a source of thankfulness to God that I can tell you today we are a growing Diocese. In both children and adults, across the entire week, during the week, Sunday by Sunday and growing faster, wider and deeper than we thought. The announcement was supported by figures from the Church of England, independent research into Fresh Expressions of church and the Bishop s own tour of deaneries. Bishop James added The pattern that is emerging in this diocese is that we are committed to the inherited church with its visible network of over 200 parishes and also to pioneering with nearly 80 Fresh Expressions of church which are having a genuine impact in reaching a new generation of people. Highlights of the research can be seen in the side panel. They reveal a greater spread of Fresh Expressions that has been previously thought. Linda Jones, Team Leader for Church Growth said The Diocese of Liverpool has been committed to growth in both inherited and Fresh Expressions of church. The fact that official figures and this research have shown that this is starting to bear fruit is something we thank God for. It is clearly time to regard Fresh Expressions as a serious, sustainable form of church. You can read full conference reports at Fresh Expressions, the research: There are 78 expressions with over 2,000 members nearly 36% of our church communities are Fresh Expressions of church with 54 planted in the last 5 years. For every one committed Christian involved in these types of church four new people have been attracted. They cover a range of locations across our diocese with 25% in challenging urban districts, 20% in suburban areas and just under 20% in rural settings. They are reaching beyond the church community with significant numbers coming who don t have any church background at all. The figures in fact show that 41% of members have never been to church while a further 30% come because of their dissatisfaction with traditional church. Over half of these expressions are led by talented lay people. Source: Sheffield Centre Church Army

10 Network of Networks DAVE CONNOLLY REPORTS: Over the last months I have visited some of the church and ministry networks within the Mersey region, in Central Liverpool, North Liverpool, Wirral, Widnes, Runcorn and St. Helens. It s been my privilege to observe the cooperation that is taking place amongst church leaders and their congregations. It s been good to see leaders meeting together to pray and fellowship. This should never be taken for granted. As well as church leaders working together I have seen how churches members are contributing towards events such as the Narnia production that will be taking place again. I have also visited a number of mercy ministries that are touching people s lives and making a difference. There is so much happening across the region it s not just about activities but about a true expression of love and fellowship. Lives are being transformed and our city impacted. People are establishing relationships which are enriching their lives. We shouldn t see what we do in isolation as often we see what we do as small or irrelevant but when we see it as part of what the church is doing in Merseyside we see it makes a significant impact. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:9-10 If you are part of a network or would like to be, I d love to hear your story. Please contact my PA Hebe hebe@frontline.org.uk GREAT FEEDBACK FROM WORSHIP NETWORK TRAINING DAY Above: Tim Watson The Worship Network last Saturday was amazing!! Loved the worship sessions. We all really enjoyed the day looking forward to the next one! It was really inspiring and refreshing. Loved the seminars great insights and great heart from those leading them. These are some of the feedback comments from the 45 delegates who attended the Worship Network Team Training Day on Saturday 12th May. Coming from about a dozen different churches it was fantastic to have the rich mix of experiences and styles to compliment and provoke one another. All those attending were there to meet with God, develop their skill and understanding, and build some new friendships with others called to the same area of service. From worship sessions led by Phill Clayton (Hope City Church) and Greg Schofield (Frontline Church) through an exhortation from Tim Watson (Liverpool Anglican Cathedral) and various seminars it was a great mix of challenge and encouragement. The seminars included songwriting, worship leading, song arranging, team development, prophetic worship and a keyboard master class. One seminar focussed on the need to keep scripture at the centre of our worship expressions, to make it the firm foundation on which we build our creativity and diversity. The Worship Network meets every two months for an evening of fellowship and worship. We laugh together over our worship mishaps and pray together for breakthrough over the barriers we face. If you would like to find out more about the Worship Network, the next evening meeting on Friday 13th July or want to be kept informed about the next Team Training Day on Saturday 9th November, please contact John Gibson (johngibson@frontline.org.uk). We d also love to make contact with more churches in the region so if you can help us make contact with someone in your church with worship responsibility that would be fantastic. by John Gibson, Worship Network Leader

11 The church community in the Mersey region has a large and growing number of vibrant networks. There are geographical groupings of churches and also mission groups such as those working with the homeless, poverty reduction and those working in business. Together for the Harvest has been seeking to bring together a network of networks. KIRKBY CHURCHES CELEBRATE EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA If you ventured into the Kirkby In-shops on the Saturday before Easter you may have been surprised to be greeted by Winnie the Pooh and Tigger or maybe even the Queen of Hearts! Whilst children participated in an elaborate Easter Egg hunt around the In-shops, adults wrote down their prayer requests which were nailed to a large wooden cross. This was the second outreach event in the In-shops following the Christmas activities. Andy Heber, Kirkby Team Vicar said, It comes out of our belief that the church should be out in the market place and amongst the people and not just shut away behind the walls on Sundays. Over a hundred people asked specifically for prayer, their requests totally covering the large cross. These requests were taken back to the churches and prayed over that Sunday and in some cases for the following weeks as well. There was also much goodwill from the In-shop traders who experienced increased trade that day and also from the shops manager who has invited them back again in the summer. Rev Andy said Many thanks to the committed outreach team who worked so hard to make this day what it was. SHINE CHURCHES OUTREACH The Outreach Teams of Christ Church URC Haydock, The Independent Methodists and the Lighthouse Church from Parr came together to deliver a Tent Mission on the King George VI Playing Fields in Haydock from 2nd to 11th June, probably the worst on record in terms of rain you would encounter! But the Spirit of the Lord came and embraced the project. Every day children s craft was offered by youth leaders from each church. Typical attendance averaged around 40 to 45 children per day. Each session included a Christian theme and message and some of these children came to the evening services on a regular basis. To assist the project, Silcocks Funfair offered their services free of charge and this fitted in perfectly as the local children were on the Whitsun school holidays. Each evening the worship group delivered a significant array of powerful songs and choruses, each having an impact on how the evening developed. The worship experienced was excellent, with up to 100 people enjoying it each evening. During the course of the evening various testimonies were given with a sermon taken by various Pastors. There were around 20 people who gave their lives to Christ, including a young man who had recently had heart surgery walking 4 miles to attend the mission. by Neil Fairhurst

12 COMPASSION MINISTRIES NETWORK GIRLS ALLOWED Toxteth Women s Centre is a Christian-led trust whose objectives are to promote the well being of women by advancing education and improving health & well being in a safe place. The centre is for women only so that women whose cultural and religious background requires that they mix only with women can attend. It is staffed entirely by female volunteers. The popular English classes, held twice a week, help develop skills women need for everyday life. They provide a creche for pre-school children and volunteers are needed. Could you help with the development of these children whose first language isn t English? The sewing/ knitting workshop also needs volunteers to help. They would love to hear from you. There is also a monthly Meeting for Better Understanding where a Christian and a Muslim speaker give a presentation on a topic relevant to the women followed by general discussion. These sessions provide the women with a greater awareness and understanding of the Christian message and the ethos of the Centre and also help Christians understand Islam. Ruth Cushing from the Centre says, We need prayer partners. If you would like to receive our updates please contact us. We are grateful to God for providing our financial needs so far. If you would like to contribute financially we have a 3 a month club where people set up a standing order to donate 3 a month. contact details are below. Having been shocked by these figures Bishop Keith felt compelled to act and after prayerful consideration his response was to inspire a pilot project where a single church from each side of the Wirral would partner together to make a real difference. With the guidance of a facilitator, both churches worked through a 5 stage programme together and examined their thoughts and feelings on the issues of poverty and life expectancy. These were then linked to the Bible which in turn linked to a greater sense of purpose and unity in regard to addressing these issues. The pilot was a massive success and now the project is looking to partner more churches with a view to: - bringing together local churches, and local statutory groups, to address the assumptions/ preconceptions each may have about the other. - building strong working relationships between churches - examining how to overcome the obstacles that make working in partnership difficult? - working together to reduce the gap in life expectancy on the Wirral. Bishop Keith Sinclair said, The current crisis in public spending and the Government s call for a Big Society seems to me to make the ministry of Life Expectancy Wirral more relevant to our national and local situation than ever. We are in this for the long haul and in seeking to build relationships will be able to offer real service, changing the culture around us and giving glory to God. Though the task and numbers may be great and our resources seem to be few, there is a precedent that in Christ s hands loaves and fishes can do far more abundantly than we could possibly ask or imagine. 13 YKIDS BELIEVE IN BOOTLE 10 TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHILDREN S CHARITY YKIDS WORKING IN BOOTLE 2012 sees the 10th anniversary of children s charity Ykids working in Bootle, and it has been a busy first six months. In addition to their usual work in local primary and secondary schools, after school projects, mentoring programmes and training, Ykids has also embarked on some major events. THE BELIEVE AWARDS The Believe Awards are aimed at recognising children and young people from Bootle who have faced great adversity and gone unrecognised. Nominations were invited from schools, churches, and the local community and competition was stiff. Using the values of the Olympics it was intended that there would be 7 winners but judges decided to include another 7 runners up after reading some of the incredible stories of local young people. The event took place at Bootle Town Hall and was hosted by Roger Philips with special guests Bootle born millionaire philanthropist and Olympic athlete sponsor, Barrie Wells and local author Alan Gibbons. We wanted children to know they are special and that someone believes in them. said Claire Morgans, CEO of Ykids. I believe that God loves his children so much that nothing is too good for them. Some Bootle kids face huge issues in their lives and are passed over. We wanted them to know that they are not forgotten. THE BOOTLE GAMES The Bootle Games took place at Litherland Sports Park and involved 12 local primary schools in 9 Olympic and Paralympic events and Welly throwing! The games were run by Ykids and partner organisations Sefton Council, In Another Place, the Salvation Army and Sefton Schools Partnership. It offered children the opportunity not only to compete, but also to try out a huge range of sports. Over 100 medals were given out to the winning teams with gold medals being awarded to Rowan Park special school for their wonderful participation. For more information visit w w w. y k i d s. c o. u k o r c a l l Above: Rain didn t stop play! Above: The winners Giant puppets from In Another Place IN ANOTHER PLACE In Another Place have built 9 giant puppets (around 11ft tall!) to be used in their most recent production The Shaping of Liverpool. The performance itself is set in 1960s Everton and narrated by 2 ladies chatting in their back yards over their washing lines! It tells the story of Liverpool s development from a small fishing village into a leading international city, and how Christianity has played a major part in it! The production has already been performed to 6000 children on Crosby beach during the Olympic Torch Relay, with other performances in Burscough, Anfield, The Bootle Games by YKids, and St Lukes Churches Open Day on 30th June. If you are interested in booking this event to take place near you, we have limited availability over the summer. Please contact admin@inanotherplace. com or visit for details. NARNIA IS BACK! In case you haven t yet heard, In Another Place are planning a repeat performance of The Narnia Experience which is expected to take place in February 2013! For the repeat to go ahead, it is vital that we have enough volunteers on board and there are lots of things to get involved in like acting, stewarding, catering, creative, construction and more! If you are interested and would like to be involved, please admin@inanotherplace.com. We re also aiming to help other groups produce smaller Narnia themed events after February 2013! Keep in touch for details.

14 STEERING GROUP NOTES MARK STANFORD It s great news that the Olympic torch passed through our region; it was a great occasion and will hopefully be a prelude to a summer of outstanding British sporting achievement at the Olympics. One person I hope, perhaps contentiously, will be competing is David Millar, the Scottish cyclist. tfh together for the harvest I ve become addicted to following the cycling grand tours over the last few years so I picked up his autobiography, Racing Through The Dark with interest. Millar was the first Briton to wear the leader s jersey in all three grand tours. He started an idealist, determined to race clean. But the grind of repeatedly being told, Well done, you re the first clean cyclist in was too much. After a disastrous Tour de France in 2001 he succumbed to temptation. Millar managed to hide his doping from all who cared about him for a couple years until a spectacular fall from grace in He was arrested by French Police and then punitively pursued by their tax authorities to the point of bankruptcy. One of the moving things about Millar s story is the support and care he received from people who could have easily distanced themselves from him during and after his ban when he was all but destitute. Since his rehabilitation he has worked to break the omertà of silence surrounding the drug culture that continued to pervade the professional cycling scene. He has worked with UK Sport and WADA to help people realise how easy it is for athletes who are often isolated to succumb to temptation to cheat and has warned of the dangers of doping. Millar s (gritty in parts) story is full of Christian language - and I ve used some of it deliberately. In a recent BBC interview Millar, speaking about the contentious possibility of his Olympic ban being overturned (which he has refused to seek for himself) said, I ve nailed myself to a few crosses and I m not sure if I m prepared to go for the final big one on this. And he concludes his book with one massive Bible word: redemption The truth that we celebrate as Christians is that Jesus nailed all of our mistakes and failures to the cross. This is how the Bible puts it: When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant cancelled and nailed to Christ s cross. (Colossians 3: 13 & 14) Now that s a redemption we all need. Perhaps I don t know enough, but I for one would love to see Millar burying himself on the lead out to bring Mark Cavendish home gold down the Mall. Have a great summer! Mark

The title track Good News and Burning for You both feature strong rock vocals, driving guitars and musical riffs, and convey truth, hope, love and announce the goodness of God. Trusting in You has a slower tempo but retains a rock edge and highlights the variety in Ian s vocals, whilst The Lord is Here starts with sensitivity but grows in urgency and intensity, aided by an excellent female vocal accompaniment. You Found Me is a poignant song with a great guitar hook and harmonies that build to a powerful declaration, When all around is sinking sand, You re the rock on which I stand. Freedom reverts to the rock style prevalent throughout, contrasted by The Cross Changed Everything with atmospheric keyboards and sonically distorted vocals. New starts with an 80 s synth/pop feel before the rock edge returns - a fusion of Depeche Mode and Squeeze. The Father s Love offers uplifting lyrics amidst heavy, darker sounds. The final track You Are Here, is a simple, worshipful reminder of God s love featuring superb piano arrangements, a duet, clever echoed vocal treatments and a crescendo fitting for this stunning collection of songs. Steve Barrie, The King s Church, Merseyside.

Showing vulnerability and uncertainty is one step too far for many, but at Groundwire they have found that people will be more real online than they are in the real world. groundwire.org.uk is a new mission offering anyone the opportunity to chat (by typing) online with a Christian Spiritual Coach 24/7. They do not provide a professional counselling service but do seek to show people the hope that comes from knowing Jesus. They say many are happy to share their worries, doubts, fears and questions in this non threatening anonymous environment and are able to introduce them to Jesus. Matt Rich from Groundwire says, In this work we regularly see people believe in Jesus for the first time and others return to faith after years of walking away from Him. Our experience shows that they will come and open their lives to us in ways often unimaginable in normal life. Endorsed by Lee Strobel, author of The Case for Christ, Groundwire is the only service of its kind in the UK. They are looking to work with churches and organisations to enable them to offer chat now from their website. They are also looking for more volunteer coaches to share hope with those who need help.
