Welcome To Discover Your Design Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Our Goals For You 1. That you will discover and develop your God-given design (S.H.A.P.E.). 2. That you will commit to serving God and others through your church family. 3. That you will allow God to develop in you a Christ-like servant attitude that is reflected in all you do (S.E.R.V.A.N.T.). 4. The two results of discovering the ministry you ve been shaped for are: Fulfillment and Joy The desired result of Discover Your Design is to help you find a meaningful and rewarding place of service. It was he (God) who gave...pastors and teachers to prepare God's people for works of service, so the body of Christ may be built up Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV) 1

It s God s Idea S.H.A.P.E. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. (NIV) Ephesians 4:11-12 He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ s body, the church, until we re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. (The Message) S piritual gifts If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; Romans 12:7 (NIV) H eart (Passion) For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:2 (NIV) After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. Acts 13:22 (NIV) A bilities There are different abilities to perform service 1 Corinthians 12:6 (GNB) P ersonality Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two men who were leaders among the brothers. With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. Acts 15:22-24 (NIV) E xperiences God helps us in our troubles, so we are able to help others who have all kinds of troubles, using the same help that we ourselves have received from God. 2 Corinthians 1:4 (GNB) 2

How Paul s Ministry Was Shaped Spiritual Gifts And of this gospel I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. 2 Timothy 1:11 (RSV) Heart My constant ambition has been to preach the gospel where the name of Christ was previously unknown, and to avoid building on another man s foundation. Romans 15:20 (Ph) Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus Acts 20:2 (LB) Ability Paul went to see them, and stayed and worked with them, because he earned his living by making tents, just as they did. He debated in the synagogues every Sabbath, trying to convince both Jews and Gentiles. Acts 18:2b-4 (GN) Personality For you have heard of my past I persecuted the church with fanatical zeal and did my best to destroy it I was ahead of most of my contemporaries in the Jewish religion, and had a boundless enthusiasm Galatians 1:13-14 (Ph) Experiences Spiritual Painful Education Watching Stephen be stoned (Acts 8:1), Conversion on the Damascus Road (Acts 9:1-20), Three years maturing in Arabia (Galatians 1:18), Special vision from God (2 Corinthians 12:2-7) I have been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was shipwrecked I have been in danger from rivers bandits the sea false brothers I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 2 Corinthians 11:23-27 (NIV) I received my training at the feet of Gamaliel, and I was schooled in the strictest observance of our fathers Law. Acts 22:3 (Ph) Ministry Read Book of Acts 3

Spiritual Gifts A spiritual gift is a special ability given by the Holy Spirit to every believer at his or her conversion, to be used to minister to others and therefore build up the body of Christ. What Are The Spiritual Gifts? SG-Administration SG-Faith SG-Mercy SG-Apostleship SG-Giving SG-Prophecy SG-Discernment SG-Hospitality SG-Service/Helps SG-Exhortation SG-Knowledge SG-Teaching SG-Evangelism SG-Leadership SG-Wisdom What Can We Say About Spiritual Gifts? 1. The Spirit gives a variety of gifts 1 Cor. 12: Gifts are given according to the Spirit s will 1 Cor. 12:11 3. Each one receives a gift 1 Cor. 12:7 4. Not all receive the same gifts 1 Cor. 12: We are to develop our gifts 1 Tim. 4:14 6. We are to use our gifts according to the standard of faith Rom. 12: We are to use our gifts for the good of others and the glory of God 1 Peter 4: We are to use our gifts to build up the church 1 Cor. 14: Using our gifts confirms the message of the gospel Heb. 2:4 Now about spiritual gifts, I do not want you to be ignorant. 1 Corinthians 12:1 (NIV) Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 12-14, Romans 12:1-8, Ephesians 4:1-16, 1 Peter 4:8-11 4

Monitoring My Heartbeat Discovering Your True Passion The Bible uses the term heart to represent the center of your: Motivation, desires, and inclinations. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (NIV) People of Passion Characteristics: Five passion principles that will help you know your true passion: What drives you? What do my dreams and desires drift toward? Who do you care about? Who do I feel I can most profoundly influence for God? What needs will you meet? What are the top two needs I love meeting? What cause will you help conquer? What cause or issue makes my heart race? What dream will you fulfill? What pursuit would release the passion in my life for God? If time and money were not an obstacle, this is what I would attempt for God 5

Applying My Abilities There are different kinds of service. 1 Corinthians 12:5 (NIV) I (God) have given him skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of crafts Exodus 31:3 (NIV) One of the most common excuses people give for not getting involved in ministry is I just don t have any abilities to offer. Nothing could be further from the truth. The key is matching your abilities with the right ministry. FIVE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ABILITIES (Skills and Talents) 1. Myth: People aren t born with skills. All skills must be learned by experience. This simply is not true. There are a number of skills which seem to be inborn or are developed very early in infancy. When people say, He just seems to have a natural talent for it, it s probably true! 2. Myth: Those skills, which must be learned, are learned primarily in the classroom. Actually, some of your most basic skills were learned at home, in the street, or somewhere else outside the classroom. 3. Myth: If you have certain abilities, you will be very aware that you have them. Again, this is not true. You are probably using a number of talents or skills that you are not even aware of. You need some process of skill identification. 4. Myth: Skills that I use at work are only usable in that environment. I couldn t use them in ministry. Hopefully, by the end of this class, you ll see the fallacy of this idea. Be creative! 5. Myth: Most people only have a very few abilities. The truth is that many national studies have proven that the average person possesses from five hundred to seven hundred skills! 6

Plugging In Your Personality In the box below, write your name: Now write your name with your opposite hand: WHAT HAPPENED when you tried to do something that was not natural to you? The same things are true when we try to minister in areas that are not suited to our personalities. God has wired your temperament in a unique way. This factor is very important in matching you to the right ministry. Personality Types D Driver I Influencer S Steady C Compliant 7

Experiences Examining My Experiences One of the most overlooked factors in determining the ministry God has for me is my past experience, particularly the hurts and problems I ve overcome with God s help. Since our greatest life messages come out of our weaknesses, not our strengths, we should pay close attention to what we ve learned in the school of hard knocks. What Educational experiences have I had? Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life. Proverbs 4:13 What Ministry experiences have I had? Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all. 2 Corinthians 9:13 What Painful experiences have I had? (God) wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials. And why does he do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them the same help and comfort God has given us! 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (LB) What Spiritual experiences have I had? For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. Hebrews 5:12-13 Your experiences are foundational to who you are. All of your past experiences are a part of your SHAPE and God can use them if you will let Him. 8

What We Believe About Ministry Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIV) Ministry exists to glorify God. The church is a body, not a business; an organism, not an organization. Ministries have life cycles and there must be periodic reviews of all ministries. If a ministry isn t meeting a need anymore, we will give it a decent burial. There are no sacred cows! The greater good of the whole body must always take priority over the needs of any single ministry. There is no place for turf in God s family. Realize that the church is to operate on the basis of spiritual gifts rather than elected office. We do not elect people to ministries. We are not looking for people to fill roles; we re looking for roles to fulfill people. 10

We Minister in Three Directions 1. To the Lord (Acts 13:2) 2. To other believers (Hebrews 6:10) 3. To unbelievers (Matthew 5:13) To people s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Physical Emotional Spiritual The Purpose of the Local Church Ministry To express gratitude to God for what He has done for you. To be a good and responsible manager of your spiritual gifts. To participate in God s plan for church growth. To expand the depth and dimension of your worship. To fulfill your part of the ministry partnership with your pastor. It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV) 11

The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19 Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people's representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20 Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. 21 But select capable men from all the people-men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain-and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22 Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. 29 Serving Is God s Idea The Holy Spirit displays God's power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church. All of you together are the one body of Christ and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:7, 21 (LB) I am not who I think I am. I am not who you think I am. But I really am who God says I am! I ve been created to love and serve. Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. I ve been saved for ministry. 2 Timothy 1:9 (LB) It is He who saved us and chose us for His holy work, not because we deserved it but because that was His plan long before the world began I ve been called into ministry. John 14:12 (TEV) I am telling you the truth: those who believe in me will do what I do yes they will do even greater things, because I am going to the Father. I ve been authorized to serve and bless others. 1 Peter 4:10 (LB) God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessing. I ve been commanded for ministry. Matthew 28:18-19 (NIV) (Jesus said) All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples I m gifted to serve. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV) I m to be prepared for ministry. Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV) It was he (God) who gave.pastors and teachers to prepare God's people for works of service, so the body of Christ may be built up I am accountable for my ministry. So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:12 (NIV) I will be rewarded for my service. Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. The body of Christ needs my service. All of you together are the one body of Christ and each of you is a separate and necessary part of it. 1 Corinthians 12:27(LB) 18

Following the Example of Jesus S.E.R.V.A.N.T. To be a servant is to follow the model of Jesus. The combining of my Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences with a SERVANT attitude will result in a fulfilling and fruitful ministry. Servant Model Jesus lifestyle consistently reflected authentic servanthood. Experience Jesus Personally To experience Him personally is the most important relationship. Relationship You will become like the people with whom you associate and the books you read. Vitality A life of enthusiasm honors God. Attitude of Excellence NEVER acquiesce to mediocrity. Newer you actually become new Phil. 2:13 Tenacity Regardless of the challenges, remember you re serving God Col. 3:23 Memory verses Mark 10:45- For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. 2 Corinthians 4:5- For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. Philippians 2:3-4- Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 19

How Do I Begin Serving Part One Romans 12:1-8 (NIV) 1Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. 1. Dedicate your body. Romans 12:1 I urge you...to offer yourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-which is your spiritual worship. 2. Eliminate competing distractions. Romans 12:2 3. Identify common hindrances. Romans 12:2 -My life is over-crowded by non-priorities -Unresolved personal problems -Fearful to take a risk with something new or different -Past experiences were not positive 4. Cooperate with other believers Romans 12:2...Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one Body, and each member belongs to all the others. 20

1. Know your S.H.A.P.E. How Do I Begin Serving Part Two We have different gifts, according to the grace of God has given us...prophesy...serving...teaching...encouraging...contributing...leadership showing mercy Celebrate your strengths Understand how God made you determines what He intends for you to do 2. Nurture a servant attitude Philippians 2: Invest yourself fully into the process of discovering and becoming active in ministry Ask God what He wants you to do Talk with other people who are involved in ministry Take your ministry seriously, but don t make the process too complicated. It s okay to try different ministries. 4. Commit to Growing Personally - We become what we are committed to. Therefore, we encourage growth in commitment to Christ and his Church -Every member deserves personal assistance in discovering a meaningful place of ministry. We value the individual more than the ministry. As a Leader -Everything rises or falls on leadership. No ministry can exceed the Commitment of those leading it. -Every leader is a learner. The moment you stop learning, you stop leading. 22

In your thinking -We expect excellence in ministry, not perfection. Excellence is doing your best. God deserves our best. -We encourage creativity and innovation in ministry7 which assumes mis takes will be made. -Your primary ministry commitment should b in the area where you are gifted. Your secondary ministry includes serving in any other area of the body where you are needed. Commit to the Lord everything you do. Then your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3 5. Maintain the proper motivation -Invest yourself in loving others deeply. If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 -Love is essential Spiritual gifts, good deeds, even personal sacrifice without love is of little value For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son...John 3:16 23

What is the result of finding and serving in a Ministry that matches your SHAPE? The desired result of Discover Your Design is to help you find a meaningful and rewarding place of service. Next Steps -Meet with your coach -Commit to follow-through -Expect God to work in and through you He who has begun a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 24

Discover Your Spiritual Gifts! By Gene Wilkes Spiritual Gifts Survey LifeWay Christian Resources Ken Hemphill defines a spiritual gift as an individual manifestation of grace from the Father that enables you to serve Him and thus play a vital role in His plan for the redemption of the world. 1 Peter Wagner defines a spiritual gift as a special attribute given by the Holy Spirit to every member of the Body of Christ according to God s grace for use within the context of the Body. 2 I like to use this definition: A spiritual gift is an expression of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers which empowers them to serve the body of Christ, the church. Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, 28-30; Ephesians 4:11; and 1 Peter 4:9-11 contain representative lists of gifts and roles God has given to the church. A definition of these gifts follows.3 Leadership Leadership aids the body by leading and directing members to accomplish the goals and purposes of the church. Leadership motivates people to work together in unity toward common goals (Rom. 12:8). Administration Persons with the gift of administration lead the body by steering others to remain on task. Administration enables the body to organize according to God-given purposes and long-term goals (1 Cor. 12:28). Teaching Teaching is instructing members in the truths and doctrines of God s Word for the purposes of building up, unifying, and maturing the body (1 Cor. 12:28; Rom. 12:7; Eph. 4:11). Knowledge The gift of knowledge manifests itself in teaching and training in discipleship. It is the God-given ability to learn, know, and explain the precious truths of God s Word. A word of knowledge is a Spirit-revealed truth (1 Cor. 12:28). Wisdom Wisdom is the gift that discerns the work of the Holy Spirit in the body and applies His teachings and actions to the needs of the body (1 Cor. 12:28). Prophecy The gift of prophecy is proclaiming the Word of God boldly. This builds up the body and leads to conviction of sin. Prophecy manifests itself in preaching and teaching (1 Cor. 12:10; Rom. 12:6). Discernment Discernment aids the body by recognizing the true intentions of those within or related to the body. Discernment tests the message and actions of others for the protection and well-being of the body (1 Cor. 12:10). Exhortation Possessors of this gift encourage members to be involved in and enthusiastic about the work of the Lord. Members with this gift are good counselors and motivate others to service. Exhortation exhibits itself in preaching, teaching, and ministry (Rom. 12:8). Shepherding The gift of shepherding is manifested in persons who look out for the spiritual welfare of others. Although pastors, like shepherds, do care for members of the church, this gift is not limited to a pastor or staff member (Eph. 4:11). Faith Faith trusts God to work beyond the human capabilities of the people. Believers with this gift encourage others to trust in God in the face of apparently insurmountable odds (1 Cor. 12:9). Evangelism God gifts his church with evangelists to lead others to Christ effectively and enthusiastically. This gift builds up the body by adding new members to its fellowship (Eph. 4:11). Copyright 2003 LifeWay Christian Resources 27

Apostleship The church sends apostles from the body to plant churches or be missionaries. Apostles motivate the body to look beyond its walls in order to carry out the Great Commission (1 Cor. 12:28; Eph. 4:11). Service/Helps Those with the gift of service/helps recognize practical needs in the body and joyfully give assistance to meeting those needs. Christians with this gift do not mind working behind the scenes (1 Cor. 12:28; Rom. 12:7). Mercy Cheerful acts of compassion characterize those with the gift of mercy. Persons with this gift aid the body by empathizing with hurting members. They keep the body healthy and unified by keeping others aware of the needs within the church (Rom. 12:8). Giving Members with the gift of giving give freely and joyfully to the work and mission of the body. Cheerfulness and liberality are characteristics of individuals with this gift (Rom. 12:8). Hospitality Those with this gift have the ability to make visitors, guests, and strangers feel at ease. They often use their home to entertain guests. Persons with this gift integrate new members into the body (1 Pet. 4:9). God has gifted you with an expression of His Holy Spirit to support His vision and mission of the church. It is a worldwide vision to reach all people with the gospel of Christ. As a servant leader, God desires that you know how He has gifted you. This will lead you to where He would have you serve as part of His vision and mission for the church.
