1 Spiritual Gifts Andrew Hancock What is a Spiritual Gift? Definition: A special ability, given by the Holy Spirit to every believer at their conversion, to be used to minister to others and therefore build up the Body of Christ. What are the Key Passages? 1 Cor 12; Rom. 12:3-8; Eph. 4:11-12; 1 Pet. 4:10-11 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. All these (gifts) are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions each one individually as he wills. (1 Cor 12:7,11). Why are the gifts given? What is the purpose of the gifts? Not primarily for my reputation, but for others (1 Peter 4:10) must be used for the good of others To give glory to God and to help me grow. We are to develop these gifts! Parable of the talents Master was looking for a return on the talents given. To produce maturity in our church family (Eph 4:11-13; 1 Cor. 12:12). Edify, build up. Paul says in Col 1:28, We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. How many gifts are there? How do we categorize the gifts? Some say there are 14, 16, 19, 30. Point: illustrative, not exhaustive. Gifts are given to build up the body of Christ, in other words to help the church fulfill its purposes worship and prayer, ministry, discipleship, evangelism, and fellowship. (19 here) Demonstrate God's Love Ministry i (Helps and Service, Giving, Pastoring) 1. Educate God's People Discipleship (Teaching, Wisdom, Knowledge, Discernment) 2. Communicate God's Word Evangelism (Evangelism, Apostleship, Prophecy) 3. Celebrate God's Presence Worship (Healing, Miracles, Tongues) 4. Participate in God's Family -- Fellowship (Mercy, Hospitality, Encouragement)

Prefer to humbly work behind the scenes and find joy in helping alleviate others burdens and responsibilities. ii Do you enjoy helping others become more effective in their work? Do you prefer to labor behind the scenes? When someone is doing a job poorly, is your first instinct to help instead of criticize? Tongues (1 Cor. 12:8-10, 29-30; 1 Cor. 14:13-15) A private prayer language (1 Cor. 14:14), a missionary gift that enables someone to speak the gospel of Jesus in a way foreigners hear in their native tongue even when speaker does not know the language (Acts 2:1-13), or a language unknown to the speaker to deliver a message from God (needs interpretation by one who has that gift). Do you have a private prayer language that helps you connect with God? Has God used you to communicate the gospel to those who do not share your language? In a word: Welcoming Warning: Watch out for balance people in your home and needs of family Reward: Giving others a comfortable rest and a time of fellowship Goal: Making people feel welcome Encouragement (Rom. 12:8; Acts 14:22) This involves motivating, inspiring, and consoling others so they mature in their walk with Jesus.
