But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. 1 Corinthians 12:7 profit sympheron Symphony For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them Romans 12:4-6a

3) 2 Timothy 1:6: Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you stir up keep the fire alive - MacArthur SPIRITUAL BURNOUT What s the use? I m not making any difference in the church. Nobody is being blessed by the ministering of my gift.

(that we) may grow up in all things into Him who is the head Christ 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:15-16 Godly, biblical church growth results from every member of the body fully using his spiritual gift, in submission to the Holy Spirit and in cooperation with other believers. - John MacArthur

1) Who is the SOURCE of spiritual gifts? A. 1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. B. 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers

2) Who POSSESSES spiritual giftedness? A. 1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. B. 1 Peter 4:10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

3) What is the PURPOSE of spiritual gifts? A. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.

B. 1 Corinthians 14:12 Even so you, since you are zealous (eager) for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification (building up) of the church that you seek to excel.

C. 1 Peter 4:10-11 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

The ultimate goal of everything that we do from the cradle to the grave is: THAT GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED THROUGH CHRIST!

There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

1) Leadership Romans 12:8 he who leads, with diligence The word leads literally means to stand before, or be over Leadership aids the body by leading and directing members to accomplish the goals and purposes of the church. Leadership motivates people to work together in unity toward common goals.

Leadership is the spiritual ability to discern the spiritual needs of a group of Christians and lead them into fulfilling God s plan for them which is greater love for Christ, for one another, and for the lost. 1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. profit is sympheron from which we get the word symphony.

(The ability to) direct members to accomplish the goals and objectives of the church. (To) see and communicate a vision about the future of the church. (To) motivate people to work together in unity to fulfill the church s mission and purposes. - David Francis Romans 12:8 he who leads, with diligence hard work, earnestness and zeal Also, care and carefulness

LEADERSHIP Pastoral and staff ministry, Sunday School, Discipleship, Evangelism, Children s Ministry, Student Ministry, Vacation Bible School, Women on Mission, Defend the Orphan Ministry, Chairing Various Committees, Special Events Committee, Long Range Planning Committee, Building Committee, Finance Committee, Capital Fundraising Committee, etc

2) Administration: 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church administrations. Persons with the gift of administration lead the body by steering others to remain on task. Administration enables the body to organize according to God-given purposes and long-term goals.

Paul calls this gift (of leadership) administration in 1 Corinthians 12:28. - John MacArthur Administration/Leadership: The ability to oversee the flock. This gift should be exhibited by pastors and elders, as well as leaders of missionary societies, youth ministries, evangelistic associations, etc.

Leadership means to stand before, or to be over. But Administration is the Greek word kubernesis which can refer to one who steers a ship. kubernesis is also the world from which we derive cybernetics which is the study of communication and control systems.

ADMINISTRATION Pastoral and staff ministry, Sunday School Director, Long Range Planning Committee, Building Committee, Finance Committee, Capital Fundraising Committee, Vacation Bible School Director, Deacon, Trustee, etc. Also, those with this gift can develop ministries where others can use their gifts such as a visitation ministry for shut-ins where they organize a group of those with the gift of mercy to visit them.

3) Teaching: Romans 12:7 he who teaches, in teaching ; 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church teachers Ephesians 4:11 And He gave some to be teachers. ; Teaching is instructing members in the truths and doctrines of God s Word for the purposes of building up, unifying and maturing the body. The spiritual ability to understand and explain effectively the text and truths of the Word of God.

there are more teachers than preachers in the body of Christ. Whereas prophets are proclaimers, teachers are explainers. Whereas prophets tend to be emotional, teachers tend to be more cerebral. Whereas the prophet desires a change in the way you feel and an exhorter in the way you act, the teacher desires a change in the way you think. - David Francis

TEACHING Teaching in Sunday School. Teaching on Wednesday nights in our Children s ministry or Youth ministry. Teaching in J.A.M. Time, Teaching in Vacation Bible School. Teaching a Bible study for men or women or youth. Leading a discipleship group. Teaching in any ministry of the church where teaching is needed. You can write for Christian magazines, internet-based ministries and other print media.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Music is one of the most powerful mediums for expressing the gifts of teaching and exhortation. Music is not a spiritual gift in the strict sense since God has blessed all humankind through this wonderful medium. But the highest use of music is to help Christians learn, remember, and obey the truths of God s Word. Music is never more powerful than when used as a vehicle for the expression of a spiritual gift. - David Francis

A spiritual gift is an expression of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers which empowers them to serve the body of Christ, the church. - Gene Wilks Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10; 28-30; Ephesians 4:11; 1 Peter 4:9-11

1) LEADERSHIP: Romans 12:8 2) ADMINISTRATION: 1 Cor. 12:28 3) TEACHING: Romans 12:7; 1 Cor. 11:28; Ephesians 4:11

4) Knowledge: 1 Corinthians 12:8 for to one is given the word of knowledge through the same Spirit The gift of knowledge manifests itself in teaching and training in discipleship. It is the God-given ability to learn, know and explain the precious truths of God s Word. A word of knowledge is a Spirit-revealed truth.

5) Wisdom: 1 Corinthians 12:8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit Wisdom is the gift that discerns the work of the Holy Spirit in the body and applies His teachings and actions to the needs of the body. The ability to apply wisdom, gained from spiritual insight, to believers; knowing what is right and what is wrong, applied knowledge.

The term word of wisdom word of knowledge in 1 Corinthians 12:8 can actually be translated message of wisdom message of knowledge People with the gifts of wisdom, knowledge, discernment and faith are people of the Book and people of Prayer. They search the Scriptures. They search the mind of Christ.

The gifts of knowledge and wisdom must always be measured against the Bible. Their authority NEVER, EVER SUPERCEDES THE AUTHORITY OF THE SCRIPTURE!

KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM Long Range Planning, Deacon ministry, and Counseling and Support Group ministry, etc.

6) Prophecy: Romans 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith 1 Corinthians 12:10 to another prophecy The gift of prophecy is proclaiming the Word of God boldly. This builds up the body and leads to conviction of sin. Prophecy manifests itself in preaching and teaching.

(The Greek word translated prophecy) means speaking forth and does not necessarily include prediction of the future or any other mystical or supernatural aspects. Although some prophets in Acts did make predictions of future events, others made no predictions but spoke the truth of God to encourage and strengthen their hearers.in its non-revelatory sense, the word prophecy simply identifies the skill of public proclamation of the Word of God. - John MacArthur

Prophecy is not foretelling but FORTHTELLING! The ministry of the Old Testament Prophets: 1. The analysis of the current situation from God s perspective. 2. The consequences of continuing in that path. 3. The need for change/repentance 4. The promise of God s grace and restoration if the change in direction was made.

But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 1 Corinthians 14:3 The one with the gift of prophecy also edifies builds up, exhorts encourages, comforts consoles What are the ministries that employ the gift of prophecy?

7) Discernment: 1 Corinthians 12:10 to another discerning of spirits Discernment aids the body by recognizing the true intentions of those within or related to the body. Discernment tests the message and actions of others for the protection and well-being of the body. Discernment is the ability to tell which things are from the Spirit and which are not, distinguishing truth from error. This gift serves as protection for the church.

Satan is the great deceiver (John 8:44) and his demons counterfeit God s message and work. Christians with the gift of discernment have the Godgiven ability to recognize lying spirits and to identify deceptive and erroneous doctrine though its operation has changed since apostolic times, because of the completion of the Scripture, it is still essential to have people in the church who are discerning. They are the guardians, the watchmen who protect the church from demonic lies, false doctrines, perverted cults, and fleshly elements. As it requires diligent study of the Word to exercise gifts of knowledge, wisdom, preaching, and teaching, so it does with discernment. - John MacArthur

DISCERNMENT Pastoral ministry, Student ministry, Benevolence ministry, Deacon ministry, Long Range Planning, Counseling ministry, etc.

8) Exhortation: Romans 12:8 he who exhorts, in exhortation Possessors of this gift encourage members to be involved in and enthusiastic about the work of the Lord. Members with this gift are good counselors and motivate others to service. Exhortation exhibits itself in preaching, teaching and ministry.

Exhortation is the ability to encourage and motivate. A person with this gift can come alongside another to comfort him with love, to encourage him to a deeper spiritual commitment and growth, or to exhort him to action. This is the gift that qualifies people to exercise a counseling ministry in the body.

The word translated exhortation is a form of the word paraclete the word Jesus used in John when He revealed the coming of the Holy Spirit as Comforter and Counselor. The word literally means one who is called alongside to help. The effective exhorter really is like the Holy Spirit with skin. It is a duel role. One is the comforting role, but the other is the counseling role. - David Francis

EXHORTATION Any ministry to first-time visitors, counseling ministries, outreach or evangelism ministries. Also, teaching a Sunday School Class, teaching in the children and youth ministry department or working in JAM time. Teaching a specialized Bible study for men or women. Writing notes, letters and cards to those who need encouragement. Really any ministry where you see the need for people to be exhorted and encouraged

Barnabas son of encouragement!

9) Shepherding: Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be pastors The gift of shepherding is manifested in persons who look out for the spiritual welfare of others. Although pastors, like shepherds, do care for members of the church, this gift is not limited to a pastor or a staff member.

The prophet prefers to speak from a pulpit. The teacher is comfortable sitting down among the flock. (But) picture a shepherd with a staff, sitting or standing among the flock, watching for and warning of danger, using his staff to pull back in those who begin to stray away, and soothing and guiding his sheep with his voice, and you ve got a pretty good idea about the gift of shepherding The distinguishing characteristic of the shepherding gift is a long-term perspective

Unlike the prophet who expects immediate response, the shepherd is content to watch people make incremental progress. Unlike the exhorter, who doesn t really have much patience with someone who doesn t want to grow in the Lord, the shepherd stays in touch with even the chronic absentee. In fact, the shepherd often tends to pay more attention to straying or troubled sheep than faithful and healthy ones. - David Francis

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. John 10:11-16

SUNDAY SCHOOL MINISTRY Bible study, ministry, fellowship, communication, counseling, encouragment and outreach and much more!

10) Faith: 1 Corinthians 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit Faith trusts God to work beyond the human capabilities of the people. Believers with this gift encourage others to trust in God in the face of apparently insurmountable odds.

an extraordinary confidence in God that is unshakable by situations, pain, apparent failure, or ridicule. While we are all called to have faith, this is an extraordinary amount of faith above and beyond that of Christians without this gift. This gift strengthens the individual and other believers (by example) to endure persecution and wait upon the Lord. The gift of Prayer - John MacArthur

11) Evangelism: Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be evangelists God gifts His church with evangelists to lead others to Christ effectively and enthusiastically. This gift builds up the body by adding new members to the fellowship. A special ability to lead unconverted persons to a saving knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The person with this gift has the wisdom to know when, who, and how to call the rebellious into the Kingdom of God.

do the work of an evangelist 2 Timothy 4:5 EVANGELISM Community outreach, prospective member visitation, evangelism training, VBS follow up, decision counseling, advertising and marketing, etc.

12) Apostleship: 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles Ephesians 4:11 And He gave some to be apostles The church sends apostles from the body to plant churches or be missionaries. Apostles motivate the body to look beyond its walls in order to carry out the Great Commission.

the ability to communicate across cultural barriers and plant churches where there is no knowledge of the gospel. In the Greek, the word apostle is apostolos which means sent one, or a messenger, a missionary. A. Have the ability to adapt to new languages and cultures and customs. B. Show interest in witnessing the birth of a brand-new group of believers who have never been effectively reached by the message of the gospel.

C. Easily turn the new work over to gifted shepherd-teachers who will take a longterm responsibility for the welfare and growth of the new flock. D. Have a unique affinity for meeting strangers.

1. Take a Mission Trip! 2. Contact the NAMB or the IMB APOSTLE/MISSIONARY Short term or long term local or foreign mission work, missions coordinator, church planting, mission trips, back yard Bible clubs, evangelism teams, etc.

Our Lord Jesus Christ He was sent. He went willingly. He came to a place with plenty of cultural barriers. He started the church. He continues to care deeply about the church He started Jesus is our supreme example of apostleship!

1 Corinthians 12:4-7

13) Service/Helps: Romans 12:7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering 1 Corinthians 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church helps. Those with the gift of service/helps recognize practical needs in the body and joyfully give assistance to meeting those needs. Christians with this gift do not mind working behind the scenes.

A. Helps the ability to aid in a time of need or bear one another s burdens as the situation arises. B. Service spiritual ability to effectively perform selfsacrificial actions and tasks to assist the body of believers in the fulfillment of the Great Commission.

The gifts of service and helps are supernatural expressions of (a) Christlike attitude. They are not leftover gifts. Service and helps are the cardiac system of the body of Christ. Without these gifts flowing throughout the body, the effectiveness of every other gift is diminished. You may recall that the word translated service is diakonos, the word from which we get deacon. The first deacons were selected to wait on tables and serve the widows in the church. By assuming these duties, they ensured the apostles had ample time to study and pray in preparation for preaching and teaching

When servants and helpers do not use their gifts, those with speaking and leading gifts usually pitch in to help. But the body suffers from lack of nourishment when prophets, teachers, and exhorters do not have time to prepare. The body also suffers a lack of purpose and direction when leaders and administrators do not have the energy to provide leadership and guidance because they spend most of their time completing tasks that nobody else will. - David Francis

14) Mercy Romans 12:8 he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. Cheerful acts of compassion characterize those with the gift of mercy. Persons with this gift aid the body by empathizing with hurting members. They keep the body healthy and unified by keeping others aware of the needs within the church. actively shows sympathy and sensitivity to those in suffering and sorrow, and who has both the willingness and the resources to help lessen their afflictions. - John MacArthur

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to me. Matthew 25:34-36

15) Giving Romans 12:8 he who gives, with liberality Members with the gift of giving give freely and joyfully to the work and mission of the body. Cheerfulness and liberality are characteristics of individuals with this gift. empowers one in a sensitive way to detect material or financial needs and meet those needs with Spirit-inspired generosity.

The tithe is the minimum Christian responsibility. God expects 10% of our income to be returned to Him through our church to acknowledge that He is the owner of everything. All giving starts AFTER the 10%

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor; that you through His poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9

16) Hospitality - Romans 12:9 given to hospitality. 1 Peter 4:9 Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. Those with this gift have the ability to make visitors, guests, and strangers feel at ease. They often use their home to entertain guests. Persons with this gift integrate new members into the body. hospitality or hospitable means to pursue the love of strangers

HOSPITALITY: Be the hospitality leader in your Sunday School Class. Be the fellowship coordinator for your S.S. Class. Help us form a greeter team for each of our worship services to meet and greet newcomers. Be on the hostess ministry team. Plan to invite newer attenders to your home for food and fellowship a couple of times a month. Organize and take a meal to a new mom or dad or to a member who has been discouraged or ill or bereaved. Take a snack pack/gift basket to a family who s living in the hospital waiting room.

Some people think you should first identify your spiritual gift, then get involved in a ministry to use it. Actually, most people discover their spiritual gift in just the opposite way! They volunteer for a ministry or start a new one and discover if they are gifted for it in the course of doing it. - David Francis
