Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 20, 2019 Trinity LUTHERAN CHURCH
Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church Minocqua, Wisconsin Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 20, 2019 New Year Essentials Finding Hope To Cope Is it possible to lose hope? Is it possible to lose all hope? On the other hand, is it possible to avoid losing all hope? Depends on what the meaning of hope is Hope in Christ is unlike anything found on this earth or inside our own hearts and minds. Hope in Christ is amazing. Hope in Christ is unbreakable. Hope in Christ is yours. Do you know where to look when hope seems distant? Will you look there? In Christ, Pastor Stephen Luchterhand Welcome to all both guest and member alike! May our gracious God fill your heart with joy, peace, and hope through the message of forgiveness in our living Savior, Jesus Christ! If you are in need of restrooms, they are located on the left as you leave church. Parents please use the welcome center or church fellowship hall to quiet an upset child. Please silence all cell phones and devices before worship. Please limit your conversations in the sanctuary and narthex. Please do use the welcome center to greet one another. 2
The Order of Worship: Divine Service I OPENING HYMN: 237 Lord of Lords, the Sparkling Heavens Please stand 3
M: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Confession of Sins, Prayer and Praise M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Almighty God, you gave your one and only Son to be the light of the world. Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ s glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and believed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Please be seated FIRST LESSON The Word For the sake of Zion I will not be silent. For the sake of Jerusalem I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth shining brightly, and her salvation burns like a torch. 2 Nations will see your righteousness, and all kings will see your glory. You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will assign to you. 3 Then you will be a beautiful crown in the Lord s hand, and a royal diadem in the palm of your God. 4 You will never again be called Abandoned, and your land will never again be called Desolation, for you will be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land will be called Married, because the Lord delights in you, and your land will be married. 5 For just as a young man marries a virgin, your sons will marry you, and just as a bridegroom rejoices over a bride, your God will rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:1-5 (NIV) 7
PSALM OF THE DAY: How good and pleasant it is* when brothers live together in unity! For there the LORD bestows his blessing,* even life forevermore. Refrain Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD* who minister in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary* and praise the LORD. May the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth,* bless you from Zion. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. 9 SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 1:3-9 (EHV) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 into an inheritance that is undying, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5 Through faith you are being protected by God s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed at the end of time. 6 Because of this you rejoice very much, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various kinds of trials 7 so that the proven character of your faith which is more valuable than gold, which passes away even though it is tested by fire may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not see him now, yet by believing in him, you are filled with a joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. VERSE OF THE DAY: Alleluia. He said to me, You are my servant in whom I will display my splendor. Alleluia. (Isaiah 49:3 cf. NIV) Please stand 9
GOSPEL John 2:1-11 (EHV) M: The holy Gospel for Second Sunday after the Epiphany, according to St. John, chapter 2. Three days later, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Jesus mother was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus said to her, Woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My time has not come yet. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Six stone water jars, which the Jews used for ceremonial cleansing, were standing there, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told them, Fill the jars with water. So they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he said to them, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. And they did. 9 When the master of the banquet tasted the water that had now become wine, he did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew). The master of the banquet called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have had plenty to drink, then the cheaper wine. You saved the good wine until now! 11 This, the beginning of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him. M: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Please be seated CHILDREN'S MESSAGE Young children are invited to the front for a brief message. 10
HYMN OF THE DAY: 382 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less 11
SERMON 1 Peter 1:3-9 Please stand NICENE CREED Finding Hope to Cope We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated OFFERING & FRIENDSHIP REGISTERS Please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 12
The Sacrament We believe that God comes to us with forgiveness in very tangible means as we participate in Holy Communion. Because the Bible has convinced us that Jesus body and blood are present in the Lord s Supper, and that receiving this sacrament together is a public statement of complete oneness in our beliefs and commitment, we invite to the Lord s Supper members of Trinity and guests from sister congregations of the WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) and the ELS (Evangelical Lutheran Synod). If you are a member of another Lutheran denomination or another Christian church and would like to commune with us in the future, please speak with our pastor after the service and he would be delighted to explain what that entails. We don t want to be presumptuous and put you in the position of stating your agreement with our convictions before we have had an opportunity to explain them. We do look forward to any opportunity to discuss the Christian faith with you. PREFACE M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being and revealed his glory as your only Son, full of grace and truth. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 13
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my + body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my + blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. 14

DISTRIBUTION HYMN: 310 I Come, O Savior, to Your Table 6 Weary am I and heavy laden; With sin my soul is sore oppressed. Receive me graciously and gladden My heart, for I am now your guest. Refrain 8 By faith I call your holy table The testament of your deep love, For by your gift I now am able To know the heart of God above. Refrain 16
9 What higher gift can we inherit? It is faith s bond and solid base; It is the strength of heart and spirit, The covenant of hope and grace. Refrain 10 This feast is manna, wealth abounding Unto the poor, to weak ones pow r, To angels joy, to hell confounding, And life for me in death s dark hour. Refrain 11 Your body, giv n for me, O Savior, Your blood, which you for me have shed These are my life and strength forever; By them my hungry soul is fed. 22 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Bible Study & Sunday School begin after a bit of fellowship time (c.a. 10:30 a.m.). Topic for adults: Confronting Culture. We re working on apologetics/defending the faith in our everyday interactions with others. Today, we ll delve into concepts such as postmodernism, situation ethics, and relativism even as we explore the Scriptures for truth. Let s deal with these challenges with Spirit-led confidence. This is don t miss Bible study! January worship One more week of New Year Essentials: First Things First January 27/28 Acts 4:23-31 Go. Boldly. With January two-thirds gone, February is on the horizon. A look ahead to February worship: February 3/4 Guest Preacher, Pastor Mark Gass of Redeemer Lutheran, Tomahawk; Pastor Gass will lead worship & Bible study as our Circuit Pastor. I ll lead worship in Tomahawk that weekend. Then, we ll begin a 3-week emphasis on the Means of Grace, entitled, Sacramentum: Fuel for Faith February 10/11 Hebrews 4:12,13 The Penetrating Power of the Word of God February 17/18 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 The Mysterious Power of the Lord s Supper February 24/25-1 Peter 3:18-22 The Cleansing Power of Holy Baptism Wednesday Bible study will NOT meet this week due to my attendance at a Pastors Conference in Crandon. We ll pick up our study of Galatians: Freedom in Christ next week (January 30 th ) at both 12:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Printed copies of today s sermon are available on the table next to the left entrance into the church (in the fellowship hall). Use these as a guide during the sermon, as a take-home refresher, or to share with someone else. Gentlemen, Trinity is in need of a congregational delegate to our Synod Convention in New Ulm, MN this summer. This will take place July 29-August 1. This is a unique and faithencouraging way to serve the Savior, our Synod, and Trinity. Planners of the convention would like to know who all the delegates are (more than 300, I believe) by Feb. 1 st. Is this an opportunity for you or for another faithful Trinity layman. Prayerfully consider this, or encourage another qualified individual and contact me with questions. As mentioned above, I ll be attending a Pastors Conference in Crandon on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. This isn t one of those conferences where I just get to sit and be a sponge take it all in. I ve been assigned to preach for the opening service on Tuesday morning. I ll be preaching on a different text and subject than this weekend s worship, which requires more than a bit of extra prep over the past few days. It s a privilege to serve fellow pastors with the Word! They (I) need it as much as everyone else! To God alone be the glory! Pastor Stephen Luchterhand 22
