BEAUTY FOR ASHES EXECUTIVE SUMMARY PROJECT 1076 Project Description Bring new life to families suffering the ravages of extreme poverty by providing them with sturdy homes, a source of income and a new life in Christ. Location These families live in a region known as El Crucero, which sits about 20 miles south of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. The houses will be built in Pacaya, a small town in El Crucero located by the Pan-American Highway. Campaign Goal $110,000 is needed to build 25 houses for impoverished families living in disintegrating shacks. The homes cost only $4,400 each and will include a porch and latrine. The families will also be enrolled in a microenterprise program that will give them the means to break free from poverty. Finally, families will be given the opportunity to grow in Christ as they fellowship with other Christians, receive spiritual guidance from community pastors and study the word with a Bible provided to them when they move in. Project Summary THE PROBLEM Families struggle to survive in a land battered by natural disasters and overwhelmed by poverty. Jobs are scarce in El Crucero. Most people survive by subsistence farming or harvesting coffee on distant plantations. Many can only secure temporary work, which leaves them unable to meet their family s basic needs. Because of their poverty, these families live wherever they can. Their homes usually consist of dilapidated shacks cobbled together with pieces of wood, plastic and rusted tin. Fumes from a distant volcano cause acid rain that eats away at the families flimsy homes, leaving them in disrepair. With their shacks offering little shelter from the harsh weather and volcanic fumes, many people suffer from skin and respiratory diseases. With so much of their meager income going to repair their dilapidated shacks every few months, families go without necessities like food, clean water and medicine. HOW YOU CAN HELP Cross International has partnered with Rainbow Network a Nicaragua-based, Christian ministry to bring hope to the people of El Crucero by providing housing, jobs and the saving knowledge of Christ. Material Impact With your help, Cross can build 25 sturdy, cement-block homes for destitute families. These homes will provide safe shelter and improve the health of families, who suffer from illnesses caused by exposure to the elements and poor sanitation. The families will also be enrolled in a microcredit program that will provide them with a steady source of income and a way to pull themselves out of poverty. Spiritual Impact The homes will be built in the middle of a thriving Christian community where families will have the opportunity to worship together and be shepherded by pastors who have been serving in the community for years. The families will also be given a Bible so they can study Christ s word together daily. With the blessings of a new house and life, these families will experience the powerful love of Christ firsthand. i

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. 7 BEAUTY FOR ASHES PROJECT 1076 SECTION I THE NEED Crumbling Dreams A Vicious Cycle Living in a Battered Land When it rains, we hide under the bed so we don t get wet. Angel, 4, who lives with his family in a shack made of plastic and wood 1

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE NEED PROJECT 1076 Crumbling Dreams When the rain pours into our shack and I see my mother and son wet and cold, it breaks my heart, the young mother sobs, clutching her 3-year-old boy. The way we live is horrible. Ruth Selano, 23, and her husband, Leonel, 25, know too well the heartbreak of living in abject poverty. They live in a one-room shack, cobbled together from scraps of cement, wood, metal and black plastic tarp. The dilapidated shelter offers little protection from the rain, wind and cold mountain air. Rainwater pours into our home. We are constantly moving our beds to avoid the water, Ruth says. The couple wants desperately to move into a safe home, one where their young son and Ruth s elderly mother will be protected. However, with jobs scarce and money tight, it is an impossible dream. As it is, the family struggles to pay their $33 rent and put food on the table with Leonel s meager income from construction work. Sometimes we have to choose between rent and food, Ruth says, choking back tears. When we can t get milk for our son, we give him water with sugar. Sometimes Leonel s modest earnings are not enough. Ruth recalls a month when the family didn t have enough money to pay their rent. The landlord came by and threatened my husband. He was very angry at us, and I was afraid he would throw us out on the street. Ruth often worries about her mother, who has severe arthritis and can barely walk, and her son, who suffers from frequent respiratory problems. It kills me that I don t have a safe house of my own for my family. At night, I comfort my son when he is cold and wet from rainwater by telling him that someday our dream for a sturdy house will be true. But without a miracle, Ruth knows that dream will never come to pass. Ruth Selano s elderly mother, Margarita, explains the family s struggles in their current home. It is so cold when I get up at night and rain is pouring through the walls. We push the beds together, but we still get wet. Ruth Selano constantly worries for the health and safety of her elderly mother and young son. 2

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE NEED PROJECT 1076 Living in a Battered Land Dozens of families like the Selano s struggle to live and survive in the small towns of El Crucero. Just 20 miles south of the Nicaraguan capital, this impoverished community faces the ravages of economic and environmental hardship. Poverty is pronounced in rural areas, like El Crucero, where many families live on $1 a day. Jobs are scarce, and most families survive by working as day laborers on coffee plantations. The work is hard and only available during part of the year. The rest of EL CRUCERO the time, the people work odd jobs or make handicrafts for a meager income. A typical house in this area is made almost entirely of plastic tarp, held up by wooden beams. Roofs are fashioned out of tin scraps, which corrode easily in the harsh environmental conditions of the area. El Crucero sits at a higher altitude than most of the country, which makes the climate much colder at night and prone to gusty winds. Earthquakes are also common throughout Nicaragua. El Crucero sits within an area affected by Masaya, a volcano that emits large amounts of sulfur dioxide gas. In the 16th century, Spanish settlers nicknamed the smoke-spewing giant La Boca del Infierno or The Mouth of Hell. Though the volcano is miles away, the chemical gases it emits affect an area that stretches to the western coast of the country. As a result of the volcano, the people of El Crucero experience frequent bouts of acid rain. The people cannot drink collected rain water because it gets contaminated and are forced to buy bottled water. The acid eats away at their ramshackle homes, leaving them in frequent need of repair. Poverty in Nicaragua 3 Sources: World Bank, CIA Factbook Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America and the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, after Haiti. Poverty is worst in rural areas where about 43% of the population lives. Two thirds of the rural population lives on $1 a day. Natural disasters and inflating commodity prices have led to increased poverty in the last several years. The most vulnerable poor are those who work as farm laborers and depend on agricultural activities to survive.

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE NEED PROJECT 1076 A Vicious Cycle For seven years, Felix and Encarnacion Jarquin have fought a losing battle with harsh winds and acid rain. Their little shack, made from scraps of wood, plastic and rusted tin scavenged from a nearby garbage dump, is little match for the powerful elements of El Crucero. Sometimes the winds feel like a hurricane. Our whole house rocks, Encarnacion explains. At times, we run out of the house because we are afraid it will fall. The couple worries constantly for the safety of their three children: Jorge, 11, Valentina, 6, and Flori, 11 months. This flimsy shack doesn t protect us from anything. It doesn t keep the wind or rain out, says Acid rain caused by the fumes of a distant volcano eats away at the Jarquin family s roof. The panels need to be replaced more than once a year, which the family cannot always afford. Often, they live with gaping holes in the roof. Encarnacion, as she points to several gaping holes in the family s rusted tin roof. Felix and Encarnacion try to repair their battered shack as best they can, but it has become a vicious and costly cycle. They replace the plastic that makes up their walls and repaint their roof with anticorrosive paint every 3 to 6 months, just to keep the house from falling down. Often they must replace the disintegrating tin roof, which costs $25 per sheet. One liter of paint costs around $10 nearly a week s worth of pay and it only covers about three sheets of roofing. With the family surviving on less than $2 a day, they cannot always afford to make these repairs. We are very poor. It is difficult to get enough food, never mind worrying about repairing our shack, says Encarnacion, who adds that the family survives on the meager income her husband makes as a day laborer on a coffee plantation. The acid rain is also a big problem, and their current home offers little shelter from it, says Encarnacion. The rain stings the eyes and eats away at our teeth. My children are often sick, suffering from breathing problems. With no respite in sight, it would be challenging for anyone to keep faith the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1) but Encarnacion and her family do. They maintain their devotion to Christ by worshiping at an Evangelical church in their community. We pray every day, asking God for better living conditions, she says. We are believing in Christ for a sturdy roof and walls. God has brought Encarnacion s prayers to our attention, and now it is our turn to act in faith to meet this earnest need. Encarnacion, holding her 11-month-old daughter, explains the struggles her family face to keep their makeshift home from collapsing on them. 4

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 People in Need of Hope On a crisp November day in 2012, a group of 50 people gathered in an empty field to sing praise songs and offer up prayers for a better future. With nothing but ardent faith in God s almighty power and providence, impoverished families from San Ramon and Pacaya, two of the poorest towns in El Crucero, gathered to dedicate a 2-acre plot of land to Christ that they hoped would one day be their new home. Luis Sanchez, a longtime pastor in the community, addressed the crowd. Have faith, he said. Begin envisioning your new homes on this plot of land. A few months earlier, the local government had donated this 2-acre piece of land in the small town of Pacaya to Rainbow Network, a local Christian ministry active in the community. The ministry knew of the community s desperate need for safe housing and wanted to build sturdy homes on the land for some of the poorest families in El Crucero. The community was eager to help, but funds were needed to turn the people s dream for sturdy new houses into a reality. After prayerful consideration, Cross International partnered with the people of El Crucero and Rainbow Network in their plan to build homes and start a thriving community on the donated land. Rainbow Network has already identified 25 families from El Crucero in desperate need of a safe home. Many come from the small town of San Ramon where people lack access to basic services, such as clean water and electricity. Pastor Luis Sanchez prays for the crowd of hopeful housing beneficiaries as they dedicate the land to Christ in November. 6

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 Pastor s wife, Yamilet Gonzalez, prays for a family in San Ramon desperate for a safe, sturdy home. Cross International has committed to bring hope to 25 families by building sturdy, cementblock homes, and we need your support! We hope and trust that you will help us, knowing that as Christians it is our duty to help the poor. Deuteronomy 15:7 reminds us, If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. And when you support this project, you are not just providing a physical home for these needy families, you are giving them the opportunity to grow spiritually as they join a thriving Christian community that worships together, receives the word of God in faith and holds one another in prayer. When they move into their new houses, the families will be given a Bible, so they can grow together in the word of God as they begin a new life in a safe home. They will also be given a microcredit loan to start a small business generating a steady source of income. Not only will these families have a safe place to lay their heads at night, they will also have the knowledge that this precious gift is given in the name of the Lord. This housing project is a miracle for the community, said Yamilet Gonzalez, whose husband pastors a small church in Pacaya. God is doing big things here. 7

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 Arise and Build The 2-acre plot of land where the 25 homes will be built lies in Pacaya, a small town in El Crucero that lies 26 miles south of Managua, the capital city. There is a primary school down the street from the land, as well as ready access to clean water and electricity. The community also lies near the Pan-American Highway, one of the main roads that cuts through Nicaragua, giving the people easy access to trade and commerce. Each home will have strong cement-block walls, a thick cement foundation to withstand earthquakes and a sturdy roof made of anti-corrosive material, called Nicalit, which is resistant to the volcanic acid rain. The homes will have wooden doors, windows, a porch and a latrine. The porch will provide a place where families can fellowship and cook, while the latrines will improve the health and sanitation of the community. The homes will be built with the help of a skilled construction team lead by a foreman. The beneficiaries will also help with the construction and, in the process, learn how to build a home. Once the houses are complete, the families will move in together and the homes will be dedicated to God s glory. On Dedication Day, the families will be given a Bible along with the keys to their Along with the keys to their new home, each family will receive a Bible a gift that will help them to build a strong spiritual foundation in Christ. Built to Last The roofs of the homes will be built with a strong, anti-corrosive material called Nicalit, which is made with fiber-cement. Rainbow Network has used this material to build several houses already and has found that it stands up well to the harsh environmental conditions of the area. 15 BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 Creating a Thriving Community Rainbow Network has vast experience in building homes and bringing people to Christ. The success of their housing programs lies in the emphasis they put on community building. They don t just build a house. They make sure the people have a source of income, access to food, clean water and medical resources. They treat the people in the community like partners, encouraging them to take ownership over the project. They pray with families and put God at the center of all they do, affirming to the people that their help comes from the Lord. In short, they live the word of the Lord that proclaims: Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father, (Matthew 5:16). With these principles in mind, Cross International and Rainbow Network will help the people of El Crucero begin to build a strong, Christ-centered community. Their sturdy homes will be the beginning of a new, more abundant life. Besides the obvious physical benefits of having a strong, cementblock house to keep out the wind and rain, these houses will also provide unseen benefits that are just as powerful. A house restores a poor family s dignity, gives them hope for a better future, and frees up strained financial resources that would otherwise go to house repairs. This allows parents to keep their children in school instead of requiring them to stay home to work. Sending children to school gives them the skills they ll need to find jobs as A Hand Up All of the families who receive a house in Pacaya will also be enrolled in Rainbow Network s microcredit program. This will allow the families to start a small business and generate a steady source of income. Typical businesses started by people in the program include convenience stores, fruit stands, clothing or cosmetics shops, and animal husbandry. When her husband died in a horrible traffic accident, Auxiliadora Perez, now 60, was left alone with no way to support herself financially. Five years ago, Auxiliadora received a $100 loan from Rainbow Network to open a small convenience store in her home. Now her business is thriving. She grosses anywhere from $3 to $50 a day, enough to support herself. She said that she sells a lot of eggs, rice and oil. adults and someday keep their own families from falling into poverty. Finally, a new house ensures that when today s middle-aged parents become elderly grandparents years from now, they ll have a sturdy home in which to spend their final days. In this way, a new house breaks the cycle of poverty, impacts several generations and puts a family on the path to a better tomorrow. 9

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 A Life Transformed Maria Garcia s life is proof that God answers prayers. She went from living in a shack full of holes and selling handicrafts in the street to having a sturdy home and running her own small business. First, I must thank God for being faithful. He knew the desires of my heart, and he gave me more than I could imagine, Maria says. I must also thank my Christian brothers and sisters in America whose generosity gave me a new life. Maria received a sturdy new house and a microcredit loan through Rainbow Network. Her family used to live in a one-room house made of plastic and wood. Now they live in a sturdy house with a roof made of Nicalit (the anticorrosive material) and a thick cement floor. With the loan she was able to start a small business selling small palm fronds for flower arrangements. As her business grew and her family prospered, Maria wanted to help others the way she had been helped in Jesus name. She Maria Garcia and her family are so grateful for the generous Christians who gave them a new house and hope for a better future. became a volunteer with Rainbow Network and now works as the health coordinator for her community. Her testimony exemplifies the powerful might of the Lord, whose word inspired both locals and Christians a world away to invest in Maria s new house and life, enabling her to now help others in need. Your support can help transform the life of an impoverished family like Maria s. Help Cross International provide sturdy homes to 25 other families in El Crucero who are praying for a better life. A Perfect Partnership: Cross and Rainbow Network Cross International has been working with Rainbow Network for several years to bring hope and aid to the people of Nicaragua. Cross believes wholeheartedly in the mission of Rainbow Network and supports the ministry as it shares the love of Christ with Nicaragua s poorest through five areas of outreach: health care, feeding, education, housing and microloans. By combining biblical and business principles, Rainbow Network is able to minister to the whole person, meeting their physical and spiritual needs. The rainbow in its name symbolizes God s promise of love, hope, and faithfulness to a devastated people. Most of Rainbow Network s programs are self-help oriented, allowing community volunteers to work together to improve their villages and families. The in-country staff are all Nicaraguans, and many of them grew up in the same neighborhoods of the people the organization helps. Cross International has already partnered with Rainbow Network to build houses for poor families in two other Nicaraguan communities and is excited to build 25 more homes for the people of El Crucero. 10

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE MINISTRY & THE SOLUTION PROJECT 1076 Desperate for Christ In 1 John 3:18, we are encouraged to love not in word or speech, but in truth and action. When we help the poor in Christ s name we are truly showing Christlike love. Our actions are a witness to the poor families receiving the homes. They begin to question who this God is that compels complete strangers to provide them with such a precious gift: a house. It is through this selfless compassion for our neighbors that we can extend Christ s message to some of those who need it most. This principle is already at work in El Crucero. When Marlon and Maria Melendez heard that they were selected to receive a new cementblock house through this program, they were excited and overwhelmed. We can t believe we could have a safe house of our own for our son to grow up in, says Maria, cradling the couple s 1-year-old son. What would cause someone to give us such a wonderful gift? Marlon and Maria were not raised in a Christian home, but after learning that the new homes for the people of El Crucero are being given in the name of God they are eager to learn more. We want to start attending church and bringing our son to see what all this is about, Maria says. The people here are very hungry for the word, says Luis Sanchez, who has been a pastor in El Crucero for 15 years. They pray and believe in faith that he will provide for their needs. He says that seeing those prayers answered would greatly strengthen the faith of the community. Marlon and Maria Melendez have been living with their 1-yearold son, Daron, in a small house made of wood, plastic and tin. It belongs to extended family members and is very crowded with eight people living in two rooms. The acid from the rain is eating away at our house. Now rain comes through the roof and walls, Marlon says. 11

BEAUTY FOR ASHES THE CROSS INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN PROJECT 1076 Help Create Beauty from Ashes Shelter is more than just an essential human need. A safe, new home brings dignity to poor families who have spent most of their lives without anything to call their own. Through the gift of a house you can preach good tidings to the poor, heal the broken hearted, proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord and give them beauty for ashes, as described in the eloquent passages of Isaiah 61:1-3. You have an opportunity to help forever change the lives of 25 families struggling to survive in a land battered by winds, acid rain and oppressive poverty. You can give them hope where they ve known only sadness and pain. You can bring beauty into their lives where they have known only mourning in ashes. Families like Ruth Selano s or Encarnacion Jarquin s can leave their dangerous, dilapidated shacks behind. They can live in safe cement-block homes, without fear that the roof will collapse on their children or leave them soaked after a rainstorm. They will no longer have to choose between feeding their families or fixing their homes. Please help us meet the desperate need for housing in El Crucero by providing these families with a safe place to live and raise their children. You can bring the comfort of a sturdy home and the joy of the Gospel to families with no other source of help. Through this act of compassion you can share the transformative love of Christ with someone in desperate need of a life-changing miracle. Valentina Jarquin, 6, drew a picture of her dream house. She prays with her mother, Encarnacion, every day for a safe home like the one in her drawing that won t leak or let cold air in, she says. Our Campaign Goal is $110,000 It will cost $110,000 to build a community of 25 houses in Pacaya. Each house costs $4,400 to build. These three-room, sturdy cement-block homes will have two bedrooms, a common living area, a covered porch and a latrine. The roof of the homes will be made of anti-corrosive material formulated to withstand the harsh elements of the area. Each family will invest sweat equity into the project by helping with the house construction. Rainbow Network requires that all housing beneficiaries pay an interest-free mortgage to cover part of the house costs, a token sum to foster a feeling of pride and ownership toward the home. Money repaid by housing beneficiaries is used to support other community improvement programs. Please see the next page for a detailed breakdown of the project budget. 14
