Introduction to the Season In the western churches, the Epiphany ( manifestation ) became an occasion to celebrate one element in the story of Christ s birth, the visit of the far-travelled Magi, understood as the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles. Matthew s account speaks simply of wise men from the east ; later tradition fixed their number at three, made them kings, and recalled their resonant names Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. In this perspective, Epiphanytide is an apt season to pray for the worldwide mission of the Church. The feast of the Conversion of St Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, appropriately falls in the Epiphany season, as does the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. In the eastern churches, the Epiphany is, rather, the celebration of Christ s baptism at the hands of John, when the heavens were opened, and a voice from heaven declared Jesus to be God s beloved son. The miracle of Cana in Galilee, where Jesus first manifested his glory, follows immediately: Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; And at Cana wedding-guest In thy Godhead manifest. (Christopher Wordsworth) The arrangement of the first Sundays of Epiphany deliberately draws out these aspects. The season of joyful celebration which begins at Christmas continues through the successive Sundays of Epiphany, and the festal cycle ends only with the Feast of the Presentation, or Candlemas (2 February or the nearest Sunday). The child who has been manifested to the Magi at his birth is now recognised by Simeon and Anna when he comes to be presented in the Temple according to the Law of Israel. He is both a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of God s people Israel. But the redemption he will bring must be won through suffering; the Incarnation is directed to the Passion; and Simeon s final words move our attention away from the celebration of Christmas and towards the mysteries of Easter. By his word was all created; He commanded and twas done; Earth and sky and boundless ocean, Universe of three in one, All that sees the moon s soft radiance, All that breathes beneath the sun, O how blest that wondrous birthday, When the Maid the curse retrieved, Brought to birth mankind s salvation, By the Holy Ghost conceived; And the Babe, the world s Redeemer, In her loving arms received, This is he, whom seer and sybil Sang in ages long gone by; This is he of old revealed In the page of prophecy; Lo! he comes, the promised Saviour; Let the world his praises cry, Sing, ye heights of heaven, his praises; Angels and Archangels, sing! Wheresoe er ye be, ye faithful, Let your joyous anthems ring, Every tongue his name confessing, Countless voices answering, Words: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius (348 c.410), trans by R F Davis ( ) Tune Divinum Mysterium: melody from Piae Cantiones (1582)

The Dismissal O splendour of God s glory bright, O thou that bringest light from light, O Light of Light, light s living spring, O Day, all days illumining. You alone are my strength, my shield, To you alone may my spirit yield; You alone are my heart s desire, And I long to worship you! I want you more than gold or silver, Only you can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver And the apple of my eye. Cantor: All: Jesus proclaimed the Good News of his kingdom, and cured all kinds of sickness among the people. Alleluia (as above) Remain standing for The Gospel Reading (Matthew 4: 12 23) The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

8 At the conclusion of the Gospel the reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Revd Fr Alex Shannon (Curate) Please sit for the Sermon Please stand for the Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. Please bow for the next three lines: For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with the blessed Virgin Mary, the Apostles, the Martyrs and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever Remain standing for the Lord s Prayer Believing the promises of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Remain standing for the Breaking of the Bread We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world. God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life. Please sit or kneel for the Lamb of God While the Altar Party receives the Sacrament, the choir leads the singing of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Please join in singing:

9 In the face of Jesus Christ your light shines out, flooding lives with goodness and truth, gathering into one a divided and broken humanity. With people from every race and nation, with the Church of all the ages, with apostles, evangelists and martyrs, we join the angels of heaven in their unending song: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Please sit or kneel for the Intercessory Prayers In faith let us pray to God our Father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. For the Church of God throughout the world, let us invoke the Spirit, saying Kyrie eleison: For the leaders of the nations, that they may establish and defend justice and peace, let us pray for the wisdom of God: For those who suffer oppression or violence, let us invoke the power of the Deliverer: That the churches may discover again their visible unity in the one baptism which incorporates them in Christ, let us pray for the love of Christ: That the churches may attain communion in the Eucharist around one table, let us pray for the strength of Christ: That the churches may recognise each other s ministries in the service of their one Lord, let us pray for the peace of Christ: The Priest introduces a period of silent prayer.

10 Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. The Liturgy of the Sacrament Please stand for The Peace Christ is our hope; we give him glory for the great grace by which, upon the cross, he stretched out his hands in love to us all. By that same grace may he come, our risen Saviour, into every gesture of unity and fellowship which we make towards one another, and make the peace we share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. during which a collection is taken Remain standing for the Offertory Hymn The Church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is his new creation by water and the word: From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy Bride, With his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth, Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses with every grace endued. Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore opprest, By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distrest, Yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, She waits the consummation of peace forevermore; Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Words: Samuel Stone ( ) Tune Aurelia: Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( ) Remain standing for The Prayer Over the Gifts Pray, my brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, For the praise and glory of his name, For our good and the good of all his holy church. Faithful God, receive all we offer you this day. May we so live the life of Christ that your Church may be a sign of salvation to all the nations of the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. The Lord is here His Spirit is with us Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Remain standing throughout The Eucharistic Prayer (E) Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give thanks and praise Living God, Father of light, hope of nations, friend of sinners, builder of the city that is to come: your love is made visible in Jesus Christ, you bring home the lost, restore the sinner and give dignity to the despised.
