Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. THE SICK: Joan Walsh, Mick Bacon, Cheryl Cook, Chris Stephens, Ethel Cooper, Gary James, Sophie Phillips, Cyril Whitfield, Anne Spencer, Audrey, Denis, Philip, Muriel, Christopher and Paul. YEAR S MIND: Irene Parker(2nd), Colin (Arthur) Searle(4th), Sybil Warner(8th), Joyce Hunting(9th), Copyright text are reproduced with permission Liturgical text in this booklet are copyright 2000, 2010 the Archbishops Council of the Church of England Other material is reproduced under Christian Copyright Licence CCLI What is a Deacon A deacon is an ordained minister of the Church. In common with The Church of Rome the Church of England has always kept the threefold ministry or "orders," of ordained ministers in the Church: bishops, priests and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came "to serve and not to be served." The entire Church is called by Christ to serve, and the deacon, in virtue of his sacramental ordination and through his various ministries, is to be a servant in a servant-church. What are these "various ministries" of the Deacon? All ordained ministers in the Church are called to functions of Word, Sacrament, and Charity, but bishops, priests and deacons exercise these functions in various ways. As ministers of Word, deacons proclaim the Gospel, preach, and teach in the name of the Church. As ministers of Sacrament, deacons can baptize,l ead the faithful in prayer, and conduct funeral services As ministers of Charity, deacons are leaders in identifying the needs of others, then marshaling the Church's resources to meet those needs. Deacons are also dedicated to eliminating the injustices or inequities that cause such needs. But no matter what specific functions a deacon performs, they flow from his sacramental identity. In other words, it is not only WHAT a deacon does, but WHO a deacon is, that is important. What is a Curate A curate is a person who is invested with the care or cure (cura) of souls of a parish. In this sense "curate" correctly means a parish priest; hence at his induction Fr Mark was inducted into the living by the bishop with the words receive the cure of souls which is both yours and mine. However in common usage the term curate is more often used to describe clergy who are assistants to the parish priest. And is used as an abbreviation of Assistant Curate, which is Fr Alex s official title and refers to priests (or, in the first year, transitional deacons) who are in their first post after ordination (usually for three or four years), and are completing their training (not unlike an apprenticeship).

Remain standing for The Invocation and Greeting In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. The Declaration of Assent (Read by Fr Mark as the Incumbent having Cure of Souls) Preface The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons. In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God, in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care? Declaration I, Alexander David John SHANNON, do so affirm, and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon. The Deed of Declaration is then ascribed by The Churchwardens. Fr Alex will then read his licence to serve as Assistant Curate. Final Hymn By all your saints still striving, for all your saints at rest, Your holy name, O Jesus, for evermore be blessed. You rose, our King victorious, that they might wear the crown And ever shine in splendour reflected from your throne. All praise, O Lord, for Thomas, whose short-lived doubting prove Your perfect two-fold nature, the depth of your true love To all who live with questions a steadfast love afford; And grant us grace to know you, made flesh, yet God and Lord. Apostles, prophets, martyrs and all the noble throng Who wear the spotless raiment and raise the ceaseless song: For them and those whose witness is only known to you By walking in their footsteps we give you praise anew. Then let us praise the Father and worship God the Son And sing to God the Spirit, eternal Three in One, Till all the ransomed number who stand before the throne, Ascribe all pow r and glory and praise to God alone. Words: Jerry D. Godwin (b.1944), based on From all thy Saints in warfare by Horatio Bolton Nelson ( ) Tune Thornbury: Basil Harwood ( ) The Lord be with you and also with you. Please bow your heads and pray for God s blessing God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations, bring you, with all the saints, to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Blessing

Strength and protection may thy passion be, O blessed Jesu, hear and answer me; Deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me, So shall I never, never part from thee. Guard and defend me from the foe malign, In death s dread moments make me only thine; Call me and bid me come to thee on high Where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay. Words Anima Christi: 14th Century, attributed to Pope John XXII ( ); translation Anon., probably 19th century Tune Anima Christi: William Maher ( ) Please stand for The Prayer after Communion The Priest introduces a period of silent prayer with the words Let us pray. O God, as we truly receive in this Sacrament the Body of your Only Begotten Son, grant, we pray, that we may recognise him with the Apostle Thomas by faith as our Lord and our God and proclaim him by our deeds and by our life. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. The Dismissal Remain standing for the Notices and Banns of Marriage Remain seated or kneeling for The Prayers of Penitence Jesus said to his apostles, You are my friends if you obey my commands. John Let us now confess our disobedience to him. You were sent to preach the good news of light in the darkness of the world: Lord, have mercy. You were sent to plant in our hearts the seed of eternal life: Christ, have mercy. You were sent to reconcile us to yourself by the shedding of your blood: Lord, have mercy. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. Please stand for The Gloria Setting: A New People s Mass: Dom Gregory Murray For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Remain standing for The Collect The Priest introduces a period of silent prayer with the words Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, who, for the firmer foundation of our faith, allowed your holy apostle Thomas to doubt the resurrection of your Son till word and sight convinced him: grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Remain standing for The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Remain standing for The Invitation to Communion Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Please sit or kneel for The Lamb of God While the Altar Party receives the Sacrament, the choir leads the singing of the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Please join in singing: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: grant us peace. Distribution of the Sacrament Anyone who has been baptised in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and wishes to receive the love of the Lord Jesus in their life, is welcome to receive communion at this service. Alternatively you may wish to come for a blessing: please keep your hands down and your head bowed to indicate that this is your preference. Please join in singing the Communion Hymn Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast, Body of Christ, be thou my saving guest, Blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide, Wash me with water flowing from thy side.

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Remain standing for The Lord s Prayer Jesus taught us to call God our Father, and so we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. At the end the reader says: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Liturgy of the Word Please sit for The First Reading (Habakkuk 2:1 4) Remain seated for The Responsorial Psalm (Ps. 117) and join in singing the Response O praise the Lord, all you nations, acclaim him all you peoples! (Response) Strong is his love for us; he is faithful for ever. (Response) Response and Chant: MHE Remain seated for The Second Reading (Ephesians 2: 19 22) At the end the reader says: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Cantor: All: Please stand for The Gospel Acclamation and turn towards the Gospel reader Jesus said: You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe. Alleluia (as above) Remain standing for The Gospel Reading (John 20: 24 29) The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. At the conclusion of the Gospel the reader says: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please sit for the Sermon The Revd Robert Mackley (Vicar of Little St Mary, Cambridge) Father, all powerful and ever living God, We do well always and everywhere to give you thanks. You are the eternal shepherd who never leaves his flock untended. Through the Apostles you watch over us and protect us always. You made them shepherds of the flock to share in the work of your Son. And from their place in heaven they guide us still. And so, with all the choirs of angels in heaven We proclaim your glory and join in their unending hymn of praise. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith:

Grant, O Father, that among them We thy servants may be known, And the ground be ever fruitful Where the seed of faith was sown, Till at length in heaven s glory, Faith and vision are but one. Words: George Boorne Timms ( ) Tune Regent Square: Henry Smart ( ) Remain standing for the Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church. Lord we odder you our service and we pray: Protect the gifts you have given us As we offer this sacrifice of praise On the feast of your Apostle Thomas. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Remain standing throughout The Eucharistic Prayer (B) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. Please stand for The Nicene Creed It is customary to bow for the next three lines: For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Please sit or kneel for The Intercessory Prayers Let us pray to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. To the bidding Lord, in your mercy Please respond by saying Hear our prayer. At the end of the prayers the priest introduces a period for silent reflection after which he says: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. (Luke 1: 28) Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. (Luke 1: 42). Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. The Liturgy of the Sacrament We are fellow-citizens with the saints and of the household of God, through Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All may turn and greet those immediately around them Please stand for The Peace Remain standing to sing The Offertory Hymn during which a collection is taken for the mission and upkeep of the Church. The gifts of the people are gathered and presented. The table is prepared and bread and wine are placed upon it. Blessed Thomas, doubt no longer, See the wounds in hand and side, Now behold the risen Saviour Who for thee has bled and died, And from death s dark pit arising Lives in body glorified. Here behold the love victorious, Over death triumphant now, See the feet where nails were driven, And thy faith in him avow: For he lives, the world s redeemer, Unto whom all knees shall bow. Thomas looked upon the Master: Was it then indeed the Lord? Were those wounds no phantom tokens? Did the sight with truth accord? Scarce believing, joy unbounded, Leapt to greet the Saviour s word. Prostrate falling, Thomas worshipped: O my Master, Lord and God, Here in truth was Christ the Saviour Who the path of suffering trod, And, to ransom souls unnumbered, Broke in pieces Satan s rod. Thomas, sight has now convinced thee, Faith within thy heart has stirred; Blessed more those faithful servants, Trusting in the Saviour s word, Who, though vision is denied them, Still believe, and own him Lord.
