2 PASTOR S LETTER/ CARTA DEL PASTOR Dear Parishioners, This week we celebrated the Conversion of St. Paul. He often lamented his earlier mistakes in his life, but he threw himself into God s mercy and with great passion proclaimed God s grace to everyone. It is never to late to change never to late to be a saint! As St. Augustine said of himself and his late conversion in life: Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. He is here with us, he has made us a part of himself: "Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it." God has decided to stay in the tabernacle to nourish us, strengthen us, make us divine and give effectiveness to our work and efforts. Jesus is at one and the same time the sower, the seed and the final result of the sowing: the bread of eternal life. The miracle of the holy Eucharist is being continually renewed and it has all Jesus' personal traits. Perfect God and perfect man, Lord of heaven and earth, he offers himself to us as nourishment in the most natural and ordinary way. Love has been awaiting us for almost two thousand years. Q: Why is obedience important in the Christian life? A: Obedience is important because it is the main antidote to the worst of the capital sins, pride. Disobedience was at the heart of the sin of Adam and Eve, and at root, it always can be seen as a lack of trust in God and His love and goodness. Disobedience in faith is always a manifestation of trust in ourselves above God and His plan. This is why we have to accept the faith, God s revelation, in our minds and in our hearts, even when it might be difficult. This is why vowed religious take a vow of obedience they give over their own will completely to the will of God, manifested through their community and its leadership. We often underestimate the effect that pride can have on our spiritual lives, because other sins are given more emphasis. But as it is put in the rule of St. Augustine, pride is especially pernicious, because it can take even the good things we do and twist them to sin by ruining our intention. Let us pray for the obedience of faith.
