It was July 4, 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was adopted, that the United States was born. While the current constitution was not adopted until 1788 and the Bill of Rights ratified in 1791, the nation chose its first President whose passion and conviction stood firm upon the Word of God. The pages of Scripture revealed clearly that blessings would be poured out upon a nation that honored God, and judgment would come upon a nation that rejected the true God. Every time a person stands and places their hand over their heart for the pledge of allegiance, they say these words, "One Nation under God." Our founding fathers were not confused, as many are today, about the identity of that one true God. While they varied in their convictions and practices, their historical understanding was expressed in the Words of the first president, George Washington, who said, "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." He was referring to the Holy Scriptures of the Judeo Christian tradition. In these pages, the one and only true God revealed who He is, and how life is to be lived. He revealed the problem of sin, as well as what is right and what is wrong. God emphatically pointed out that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God," and that only by trusting in His Son, Jesus Christ, could a

The good news of the Bible was that "God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that who ever believes in Him, will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) So this coming weekend, we as a nation will celebrate the blessings of God on a nation that has historically honored God in its constitution, its laws, and its faith. While certainly not perfect in belief or practice, there is much to celebrate in America over the past 200+ years because God has poured out blessings on this nation. BUT in recent years, the swarms of locusts have invaded the nation as leaders have turned away from God, apathy has set in on much of the church in America, tension has risen between neighbors, and much of our culture and laws have moved away from the Bible and God. In many circles, that which God has declared wrong has been championed as right, and under the deception of political correctness and freedom, many things have been twisted by the lies of the evil one. According to our first leader, without God and the Bible, America cannot be governed in a way that will bless her citizens or the world. So on this special 240th Birthday, would you hear the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14 that "If My people which are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land"?
