I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. 8 The Harlot 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. 9 The Harlot 14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. 15 And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest,, where the whore sitteth,, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. 10 The Harlot 17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. 18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth. The Harlot will finally be destroyed by the political system of the beast with seven heads and ten horns, but not before she brings the Great Apostasy to usher in the Antichrist. This is the same beast as described in Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 (see Introduction for 10 Lesson 4, The Times of the Gentiles ).

12 The Beast that Carries the Harlot The ten horns of the beast refer to the ten kingdoms of the last-days world order. The seven heads of the beast refer to either the seven steps of the development of Roman Imperialist government or seven world empires. [1] 12

15 The Beast that Carries the Harlot [1] Look closely now at Revelation 17: 9-11: 9 Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains [large governments],, on which the woman sitteth. 10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. 11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven,, and goeth into perdition. 15

16 The Beast that Carries the Harlot [1] Revelation 17 further describes the beast that we first saw in Revelation 12 and 13. Each time we see this beast we learn a little more about it. Revelation 17:9 says that the seven heads are seven mountains (large governments). Revelation 17:10 says that they will be ruled by seven kings. Then, an eighth will appear that is part of the seven. This eighth is the Antichrist. 16

17 The Beast that Carries the Harlot [1] The Antichrist is said to be the eighth, a part of the seven, because he is the culmination of all the previous, pagan, idolatrous empires that were represented by the seven. This is particularly true of the second view of the seven heads we have just seen. 17

18 The Beast that Carries the Harlot [1] Michael J. Riley describes the beast in modern terms in his book, Backfield in Motion: In general, the beast represents Globalization a one-world system. 18

Global Economics Currency Manipulation, Private Central Banking (Federal Reserve), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF). 2. Global Politics Council on Foreign Relations, United Nations, Bilderbergers, Club of Rome, Trilateral Commission. And, 3. Shadow Goverment Powerful men, organizations, and forces that set the agenda and manipulate governments. 19

25 The Apostasy The development of the last day s s world religion is seen in Revelation chapter 17. This final religion will be based on the worship of the world ruler and Satan. [1] The end-time religion is represented in the book of Revelation as a woman, a great whore. It will be a gradual apostasy (falling away) that will result in the final religious system. Then the Antichrist will be revealed. 25

26 The Apostasy 2 Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first,, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; We know that it is prophesied that in the last days the Church will trend toward apostasy. Various stages of this apostasy were described by Christ in His letters to the Seven Churches of Revelation chapters 2 and 3. Christ described the very best (Philadelphia) and the very worst (Laodicea). 26

29 False Religion The Harlot of Revelation 17, a woman, represents false religion. Waters of Revelation 17 refers to peoples, nations, races, and languages. This illustrates that the harlot has such influence over masses of people that she has been able to control entire nations. We could be speaking of religious systems such as Secular Humanism, apostate Christianity (including Papal Rome), or both? [1] 29

30 False Religion The woman therefore represents a spiritual or religious witness. [1] Therefore, the symbol for the end-time "church" is a woman representing a religious movement. [2] The beginning of false religion was in the exchange between the Serpent and Eve in the Garden when Satan and Eve began to twist and modify the instructions that God gave to them regarding the trees in the Garden, appealing to Eve s s lustful desires, that she could become like God. 30

31 False Religion This first false religion is the basis of all false religion in that it says that man can do it himself without faith in God. Next, we see that Cain applied these same principles when he engaged in his own false religious practice of bringing the fruit of his own labor to the altar of God. His was a purely humanistic, man centered, effort. He approached God on human terms, rather than bringing an offering by faith. 31

32 False Religion We then encounter Nimrod at Babel, defying God, with a humanistic man-centered worship in the building of the Tower. He also desired to glorify himself,, to become like God. We see this expressed in the statement, and let us make us a name. GEN 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name,, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 32

33 False Religion [1] The Jewish historian Josephus speaking of the rebellion of Nimrod, records this event as follows: God admonished them again to send out colonies; but they, imagining the prosperity they enjoyed was not derived from the favor of God, but supposing that their own power was the proper cause of the plentiful condition they were in, did not obey him. Nay, they added to this their disobedience to the Divine will, the suspicion that they were therefore ordered to send out separate colonies, that, being divided asunder, they might the more easily be Oppressed. 34 False Religion [1] Now it was Nimrod who excited them to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it to God, as if it was through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also gradually changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning men from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power. (Continued) 34

35 False Religion [1] He also said he would be revenged on God, if he should have a mind to drown the world again; for that he would build a tower too high for the waters to be able to reach! and that he would avenge himself on God for destroying their forefathers! Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower. (Continued) 35

36 False Religion [1] When God saw that they acted so madly, he did not resolve to destroy them utterly, since they were not grown wiser by the destruction of the former sinners; but he caused a tumult among them, by producing in them divers languages, and causing that, through the multitude of those languages, they should not be able to understand one another. The place wherein they built the tower is now called Babylon, because of the confusion of that language which they readily understood before; for the Hebrews mean by the word Babel, confusion. Nimrod is a type of the Antichrist. 36

38 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted It is important to our understanding of end-time events to know that the Antichrist will be compelling. The Antichrist will be a great deceiver. He will appear to have all the answers. He will have political, economic, and religious power at his disposal. The harlot of Revelation 17 will bring a merging of all religious systems, but the Antichrist will 38 demand worship of himself.

39 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted Revelation 17 speaks of a final religion influences the kingdoms of the world. that It also speaks of the destruction of the corrupted religious system for one final system under a future leader known as Antichrist,, who according to Revelation 13: will require worship of himself. The Antichrist will have the power to do so since Revelation 17:17 reveals that the kings will give their kingdoms to the Antichrist. 39

40 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted The Antichrist will truly be a world ruler. Many today follow a New Age religion that mixes various religions, particularly Eastern occult religions. New Agers today, steeped in occultism, await the coming of the Christ. This New Age Christ is not Jesus Christ, but the New Age is preparing the world for the great delusion and acceptance of the Antichrist. [1] 40

41 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted People are so constantly being indoctrinated with these beliefs that it is difficult to discern the truth. When the time comes, many will be ready to believe the lie. 2 Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed. 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. love of the truth, that they might be saved. 43 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted As an example of people willing to believe in lies, notice in the following statements the acceptance of astrology by respected psychologist Carl Jung as found in brochures of Edgar Cayce s Association for Research and Enlightenment: The fact that it is possible to reconstruct a person s s character fairly accurately from his birth date shows the relative validity of astrology. Carl Jung [1] Modern psychology, particularly that of Carl Jung, leads many young people astray in our universities today. The theology espoused by Jung and others believes in a a collective unconscious mind that belongs to the entire race. [1] 44

In this respect, God is reduced to a type of universal myth and the student is led into new age and Eastern thought with emphasis on introspection and experience. [1] The pantheist, evolutionist, Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin ( ) 1955) believed that without the evolution of collective thought, how can there be a consummated Christ. [2] 45

46 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Gary Kah observes: Accepted According to Jung and Chardin,, we are not unique individuals responsible for our own independent thoughts and choices, nor are we accountable to a personal God for those thoughts and choices. Rather we are all part of a vast living, evolving organism a global brain that encompasses all of humanity and is God. This is the very essence of Pantheistic religion. [1] 46

47 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted For Chardin,, God, the universe, and man are evolving and will eventually reach the Omega Point, when the universe turns completely into Christ (an evolving Christ). [1] 47

48 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted The modern church,, like Chardin, fails to adequately deal with sin and man s s fallen nature. [1] The modern message is love,, and the modern emerging church avoids anything that might be frightening or disturbing to the congregation, including sin, hell, and prophecy. [2] Certainly, Mega Church advocate Rick Warren advises not to spend much time studying prophecy. [3] 48

49 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted Also, Rick Warren avoids having salvation altar calls as too threatening,, requiring the seekers to acknowledge their sins. [1] This is the trend of many churches today. They also believe that Biblical prophecy is too frightening and controversial. That s s too bad, since they then must ignore a third of the Bible. 49

50 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted The modern mega church of the 21st century, considers that preaching about sin, hell and prophecy is not conducive to church growth. It s s not good for business. Dr. Larry Spargimino writes about Mega Church Movement (MCM) which is designed for church growth and making pastors more like CEO s than shepherds. Rick Warren is a big part of this movement. [1] 50

51 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted Spargimino asks and answers the question: Where is the MCM taking us? Into the emerging church movement, a movement characterized by an extremely flexible approach to the Bible and Bible doctrine. It seeks to bring together the diverse traditions and beliefs of a broad sprectrum of Christians while at the same time seeking to remain orthodox. [1] Sound doctrine is being compromised for the sake of ecumenism and church growth. 51

52 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted Many churchgoers today are flirting with New Age ideas,, and may not even recognize it. These ideas are encoded within much of the media, including movies like the ever popular Star Wars. The new age ideas of the Cosmic Christ are there, but are cleverly disguised to the average churchgoer. They send their children off to public school where they are taught that evolution is a fact, thus the 52 Bible is myth.

53 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted This is reinforced in the children s s minds by The Learning Channel, The Discovery Channel,, and National Geographic. Parents then send their children off to secular or liberal colleges to become indoctrinated with the belief systems (worldviews) of their professors who denigrate, as unscholarly and ridiculous, the last vestiges of their Christian beliefs. Finally, parents wonder why their children soon abandon their Christian beliefs, become atheists, or seek truth within other religions. 53

54 The Antichrist Why He Will Be Accepted Recently, the popularity of the book and movie, The DaVinci Code,, has thrust the ideas of Gnosticism,, particularly Neo- Gnosticism into the limelight. 54

56 What is Gnosticism? The Gnostics believed that the material realm is evil, and that an evil creator created it. They believe that it is our goal to find certain lost secret knowledge so that we can find our way back to the true God from whom we became separated. [1] Some Gnostics believe that God is both male and female. [2] The Jesus of the Gnostic writings is a phantom,, a spirit who sometimes inhabits a body and sometimes does not, and who talks in a way that few could understand. [3] 56

57 What is Gnosticism? Likewise, Gnostic beliefs are difficult to define since many are contradictory,, and differ from group to group. [1] Gnosticism has recently been thrust into the limelight with the publication of Dan Brown s bestseller, The Da Vinci Code. The form of Gnosticism that Dan Brown is promoting is based on the premise that secret spiritual truths were revealed to a select elite few of Jesus disciples and Mary Magdalene. 57

58 What is Gnosticism? The Gnostics believed that salvation depended on possessing this secret knowledge. Today, Gnosticism is the most accepted form of pantheism (God is everything). It was the Gnostics that attempted to infect Christianity at the very beginning. Gnosticism was the main adversary of the first century church, and was an offshoot of Kabalism. Kabalism itself was an another version of the mystery religions. [1] 58

59 What is Gnosticism? Kabalism is a Jewish cult that represents an attack on the Old Testament. Gnosticism is a Kabalist attack on the New Testament,, best represented today by the popular book and movie The Da Vinci Code. [1] To the Gnostic, the search for knowledge is of primary importance. Hidden knowledge that s s the lure of books such as Dan Brown s, The Da Vinci Code,, and the occult books of Alice Bailey and Helena Blavatsky. [1] 59

60 What is Gnosticism? According to the Gnostic, when the seeker finds the secret knowledge, it opens his mind to the light that dwells within his self. Thus the seeker is saved. Therefore, salvation is obtained by looking into one s s self, to find that spark of divine within that belongs to God. To the Gnostic, our spiritual problem is lack of knowledge (gnosis), not sin. [1] This is the essence of Jungian psychology and the 60 teachings of the New Age Movement.

61 What is Gnosticism? The Bible says that our problem is sin,, and our redemption is through Jesus Christ (Romans 3:23-26). The Bible also says that it is lack of knowledge that keeps us from discovering truths contained in the Word of God (Romans 10:14, Hosea 4:6). It is knowledge of God s s Word that we must seek, not some secret gnosis (knowledge) within ourselves. Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. 61

63 Islam Some recent statements coming from the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, point to similarities of end-time messianic beliefs of Islam and the Antichrist events and the seven-year Tribulation scenario of the books of Revelation and Daniel. Islam, he says, looks for the return of the 12th Imam,, who it is believed will institute 7 years of peace and rule after which will be the judgment and the end of the world. [1] 63

64 Islam True Christians believe that the Bible refers to the coming Antichrist who will enter into a 7-years peace accord during which God will bring wrath on the earth, following which Christ will return and reign for 1,000 years, which will end with the final judgment and the end of the world. 64

The Church, with the leading of Catholicism, is full of the spirit of ecumenism,, and the desire to merge within itself, as well as to seek accommodation with all other religions of the world, including the New Age. A desire for church growth is producing mega churches that preach a watered down, seeker friendly, version of Christianity. It is this willingness to accommodate and to merge that may produce the final form of a 66 world religion.

67 What is the Final Religion? It is a lack of knowledge of the Biblical truths and the constant indoctrination in New Age and humanistic beliefs that is changing the minds of the people. The media is beating the drums of political correctness and toleration so that truth is distorted to the point that good seems bad and bad seems good. At the same time the secular school system is changing the worldview of millions for the next 67 generation.

68 What is the Final Religion? The Catholic pope has engaged in ecumenical efforts toward the Protestant churches and pagan religions. In his reaching out to leaders in other religions he states that we all worship the same God, in spite of the obvious irreconcilable differences. In particular, the pope has reached out to Muslims,, stating that Allah is the same as Jehovah, even though Allah is derived from the Babylonian moon god. 68

69 What is the Final Religion? New Agers would also be deceived by a cosmic Christ-like figure that speaks of oneness of mind and spirit in harmony with mother earth. Liberal churches do not believe that the book of Revelation is relevant for today, and so might well fall prey to the deception of this 7-years 7 peace agreement, and accept the Antichrist. 69

In view of this, could it be that the final religion will merge New Age beliefs, the apostasy of liberal Protestant and Catholic churches, and Islam together in oneness of spirit with nature? The acceptance and worship of the Antichrist could conceivably merge these belief systems. This is even more likely if the fundamentalists of all these religions were somehow neutralized. Notice how John Phillips and Jerry Vines describes the Antichrist in their commentary, 70 Exploring the Book of Daniel:

71 What is the Final Religion? Wickedness will get worse and worse. As the man of sin the promotion of sin will be his chief aim. He will gratify lust and glorify sin. He will appear as the messiah of the Jews, the mahdi of the Muslims, the krishna of the Hindus. He will be the ideal of the humanists, the Christ of apostate Christendom, the mantra of the eastern mystics. A war-weary, weary, famine- ravished, disease-ridden, plague-infested, panic-stricken world will hail him till the indignation be accomplished. [1] 71

72 What is the Final Religion? It is these things and more that are setting the stage for the final deception and the religion of the Beast. Let s s now look at a curious phenomena that has clothed Europe in prophetic end-times symbology,, especially Revelation 17, regarding the final religious and political systems. 72

74 European Union Symbol Of End-times The European Union has clothed itself in the Prophetic Biblical symbols since its beginning. Three symbols in particular are featured: 1. The Whore of Babylon on the beast (Rev 17). 2. The twelve stars of the woman of Revelation 12 (Rev 12). 3. The Tower of Babel (Gen 11). All of these symbols point to end-time events, while the Tower points to man s s wicked rebellion. Let s s now look at the first symbol, the Whore. 74
