3 SPECIAL STATEMENT Medjugorje Status December 1, 2011 A.D. No attempt is intended to pre-empt the Church on the validity of the Medjugorje Apparitions. They are private revelation waiting the Church s final judgment 1. In the interim, these private revelations are allowed by, and for, the faithful to have devotion to and to be spread legally by the Church. Devotion and the propagation of private revelations can be forbidden only if the private revelation is condemned because of anything it contains which contravenes faith and morals according to AAS 58 (1966) 1186 Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Medjugorje has not been condemned nor found to have anything against faith or morals, therefore it is in the grace of the Church to be followed by the faithful. By the rite of Baptism one is commissioned and given the authority to evangelize. By Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. 2 One does not need approval to promote or to have devotions to private revelations or to spread them when in conformity to AAS 58 (1966) 1186, as the call to evangelize is given when baptized. Caritas of Birmingham, the Community of Caritas and all associated with it, realize and accept that the final authority regarding the Queen of Peace, Medjugorje and happenings related to the apparitions, rests with the Holy See in Rome. We at Caritas, willingly submit to that judgment. While having an amiable relationship with the Diocese of Birmingham and a friendly relationship with its bishop, Caritas of Birmingham as a lay mission is not officially connected to the Diocese of Birmingham, Alabama, just as is the Knights of Columbus. 3 The Diocese of Birmingham s official position on Caritas is neutral and holds us as Catholics in good standing. 1. The Church does not have to approve the apparitions. The Church can do as She did with the apparitions of Rue du Bac in Paris and the Miraculous Medal. The Church never approved these apparitions. She gave way to the people s widespread acceptance of the Miraculous Medal and thereby the Apparitions to St. Catherine. 2. Catechism of the Catholic Church 2nd Edition 3. The Knights of Columbus also are not officially under the Church, yet they are very Catholic. The Knights of Columbus was founded as a lay organization 129 years ago, with the basic Catholic beliefs. Each local council appeals to the local Ordinary to be the Chaplain. The Knights of Columbus is still a lay organization, and operates with its own autonomy. 4 ABOUT THE AUTHOR The author of this book is also the author of the books Words From Heaven, How to Change Your Husband, I See Far, Look What Happened While You Were Sleeping, It Ain t Gonna Happen hundreds of booklets, and other publications such as the Words of the Harvesters and the Caritas of Birmingham Newsletter. He has written more on Medjugorje and its messages than anyone in the world, producing lifechanging writings and spiritual direction to countless numbers across the world, of all nationalities. He wishes to be known only as A Friend of Medjugorje. The author is not one looking in from the outside regarding Medjugorje, but one who is close to the events - many times, right in the middle of the events about which he has written; a first-hand witness. Originally writing to only a few individuals in 1987, readership has grown to over 250,000 in the United States, with additional readers in over one hundred thirty foreign countries, who follow the spiritual insights and direction given through these writings. The author, when asked why he signs only as A Friend of Medjugorje, stated: I have never had an ambition or desire to write. I do so only because God has shown me, through prayer, that He desires this of me. So from the beginning, when I was writing to only a few people, I prayed to God and promised I would not sign anything; that the writings would have to carry themselves and not be built on a personality. 3

5 I prayed that if it was God s desire for these writings to be inspired and known, then He could do it by His Will and grace and that my will be abandoned to it. The Father has made these writings known and continues to spread them to the ends of the earth. These were Our Lord s last words before ascending: Be a witness to the ends of the earth. These writings give testimony to that desire of Our Lord to be a witness with one s life. It is not important to be known. It is important to do God s Will. For those who require ownership of these writings by the author in seeing his name printed on this work in order to give it more credibility, we state that we cannot reconcile the fact that these writings are producing hundreds of thousands of conversions, if not millions through grace, and are requested worldwide from every corner of the earth. The author, therefore, will not take credit for a work that, by proof of the impact these writings have to lead hearts to conversion, have been Spirit inspired with numbers increasing yearly, sweeping as a wave across the ocean. Indeed in this case, crossing every ocean of the earth. Our Lady gave this author a direct message for him through the visionary, Marija, of Medjugorje, in which Our Lady said to him to witness not with words but through humility. It is for this reason that he wishes to remain simply A Friend of Medjugorje. Caritas of Birmingham 4

6 Medjugorje The Story in Brief THE VILLAGE SEES THE LIGHT is the title of a story which Reader s Digest published in February It was the first major news on a mass public scale that told of the Virgin Mary visiting the tiny village of Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina. At that time this village was populated by 400 families. It was June 24, 1981, the Feast of John the Baptist, the proclaimer of the coming Messiah. In the evening, around 5:00 p.m., the Virgin Mary appeared to two young people, Mirjana Dragičević* and Ivanka Ivanković*. Around 6:40 p.m. the same day, Mirjana and Ivanka, along with four more young people, Milka Pavlović*, the little sister of Marija, Ivan Ivanković, Vicka Ivanković*, and Ivan Dragičević saw the Virgin Mary. The next day, June 25, 1981, along with Mirjana, Ivanka, Vicka and Ivan Dragičević, Marija Pavlović* and Jakov Čolo also saw the Virgin Mary, bringing the total to six visionaries. Milka Pavlović* and Ivan Ivanković only saw Our Lady once, on that first day. These six have become known as and remain the visionaries. * Names at the time of the apparitions, they are now married with last names changed. 5

7 These visionaries are not related to one another. Three of the six visionaries no longer see Our Lady on a daily basis. As of February 2012, the Virgin is still appearing everyday to the remaining three visionaries; that s well over 13,785 apparitions. The supernatural event has survived all efforts of the Communists to put a stop to it, many scientific studies, and even the condemnation by the local bishop; yet, the apparitions have survived, giving strong evidence that this is from God because nothing and no one has been able to stop it. For over thirty years, the apparitions have proved themselves over and over and now credibility is so favorable around the world that the burden of proof that this is authentic has shifted from those who believe to the burden of proof that it is not happening by those opposed to it. Those against the apparitions are being crushed by the fruits of Medjugorje millions and millions of conversions which are so powerful that they are changing and will continue to change the whole face of the earth. 8 A New Ark? She was dying in her hospital bed. Her family had called a priest a couple of weeks before, and she refused to see him. She refused to discuss religion or God with any of her family. The priest had told them to continue to pray and call him when it was apparent that death was near. Now called and entering the room, carrying a Crucifix, the priest went by her bedside and held the Crucifix in front of her. She had lived a wicked life and had several abortions. The family was full of hope now that God was giving her another chance. The priest, encouraged by her not saying anything, said lovingly, as he held the Crucifix in front of her face, You don t have to say anything, just gaze at the Crucifix and say Jesus. The dying woman, moments away from death, stared so much held in the balance. Family and the priest were on edge and watched so many prayers, so much hope. What a gift, an opportunity, she was being given as she was about to breathe her last. It seemed like an eternity, although just a few moments that she stared at the Crucifix. In those tense moments she made a decision that was clear to all in the room, for the whole scene unfolded before their eyes. The dying woman, staring at the Crucifix, being given a great grace to embrace Jesus, instead spit on the Crucifix and then died. 7

9 It would be safe to say that everyone was devastated, stunned with numbness, to see a soul reject God so clearly just before death. Many souls travel through life thinking, I will convert. I will change, but not just now. Life is rich. There are too many things I want to do first. Others partially convert, not going all the way wanting a little of Jesus and a little of the world. The situation of the world today is that this middle ground is disappearing. There must be a clear choice. Unfortunately, many do not anticipate at death that satan will be present to sink his teeth in souls whose lives he had, such as the poor wretch you have just read about. What sort of great struggle took place over this woman s soul. Perhaps with all her might she may have wanted to change but despaired as she gazed. Surely present with the priest and family were angels, sent there in answer to the family s hope and prayers. But also present were demons, called there, having the right to be present by the way she lived. We must reflect that satan, in a last effort to get a soul for eternity, will be there at a death, as well as angels. A life of conversion, a holy life will give him no room to be present for the purpose of gaining a soul since he knows there is little chance to gain the soul. 8

10 This woman s death parallels the situation of the world today. Our Lady brings to the world a last chance to change. She does as the priest, except the Crucifix She holds in front of the world is conversion. It will save you from eternal damnation. The world can do as this woman did spit at Our Lady s invitation, and the world will die or accept it and live. Some may be shocked or appalled, thinking who are we to say the world will die if it rejects this plan but that is precisely what is planned. It (the world) was going to die. God sent Our Lady to extend its life. Some may say how can we write so boldly and with confidence that the world was to end. Our Lady s messages clearly show without the events of Medjugorje, the spiritual center for the renewal of the whole world, perhaps already by now, the world would not exist as we know it. Our Lady reveals that satan s plan was to destroy, not only all life, but all of nature however, not only nature but our whole planet!! This is quite a remarkable revelation of satan s plans!! 9

11 January 25, 1991 satan is strong and wishes not only to destroy human life but also nature and the planet on which you live * God sent Our Lady to intercept these plans of satan. In the same message you just read, Our Lady says: January 25, 1991 God sent me to you so that I can help you On October 8, 1984, Our Lady said to dedicate prayers because of great and moral depravity in the world. * This message was given just before and at the moment Saddam Hussein blew up every oil well in Kuwait that he could. Billions of gallons of oil were dumped upon the desert and flowed into the Gulf. In addition, pollution of an enormous measure was released into the air because of resulting fires. The catastrophic potential was diminished with the quick end of the war, which resulted in the controlling and stopping of oil flows and fires. The potential for a World War III was very possible and no small threat. Saddam tried to enlist and incite other nations to join him but was blocked from being successful. The seriousness of the crisis is overlooked today but can be seen when one reads Our Lady s messages given during that time. In request to Our Lady s messages during that period, thousands of groups prayed for peace. Caritas had one thousand prayer groups meeting every Sunday in churches, praying at the same moment in compliance with Our Lady s messages given to Ivan s prayer group during that period. A broad overview of the situation and the message about satan wishes to destroy the planet gives strong evidence that Our Lady saved the world, through Her intercession, from satan s plans to destroy it. History will show we are living in extraordinary times. It is indeed a marvelous time to be alive, where those in the future will view in wonder. 10

12 October 8, 1984 dedicate them (prayers) to the conversion of sinners because the world is immersed in a great moral decay Water flooded the earth to purify it the first time, and the Ark saved, as well as contained, the remainder of all mankind. Today Our Lady is building an Ark, and the whirlpool of Noah s days exist today, but rather than water, it is sin that is actually destroying the earth. February 17, 1984 My children pray! The world has been drawn into a great whirlpool. It does not know what it is doing. It does not realize in what sin it is sinking. It needs your prayers so that I can pull it out of this danger. Mary of Nazareth, the humble little Jewish girl, who once played in the soil of the earth, who loved to smell its flowers, now is exalted above the angels and chosen to come daily to the earth in order to save it. She wishes to bring freshness and innocence back to the earth. The following message is as though Mary remem- 11

13 bers Her time upon the earth and that sweetness that surrounded Her while in prayer. January 27, 1986 Every second of prayer is like a drop of dew in the morning which refreshes fully each flower, each blade of grass and the earth. In the same way prayer refreshes man. When man is tired, he gets rest. When he is troubled, he finds peace again. Man renews himself and can, once again, listen to the words of God. How the scenery is beautiful when we look at nature in the morning in all its freshness! But more beautiful, much more, is it when we look at a man who brings to others peace, love, and happiness. Children, if you could know what prayer brings to man! Especially personal prayer. Man can thus become a really fresh flower for God. You see how drops of dew stay long on flowers until the first rays of sun come. The ark that is to be built will be through the means of prayer. It is a spiritual ark which will con- 12

14 tain the earth s people who are trying to live pure lives. Those pure flowers will shine before God. God, then, will not allow satan to destroy so beautiful an earth, full of flowers. December 18, 1986 Dear children, once again I desire to call you to prayer. When you pray, you are much more beautiful, like flowers which, after the snow, show all their beauty and all their colors become indescribable. So also you, dear children, after prayer show more before God all that is beautiful to please Him. Therefore, dear children, pray and open your inner self to the Lord so that He makes of you a harmonious and beautiful flower for Paradise. Thank you for having responded to my call. Our Lady s messages have depth to them. They are extremely deep in what they say, yet few realize or take Her messages with seriousness. Our Lady tells us the Holy Spirit will enlighten us about Her coming to Medjugorje and Her messages. 13

15 July 25, 1995 I invite you to prayer because only in prayer can you understand my coming here. The Holy Spirit will enlighten you to understand that you must convert. Little children, I wish to make of you a most beautiful bouquet prepared for eternity. We are to become flowers to fill the earth in order that when God looks down upon us, He will hear the sweetness of man s heart rising to Heaven in praise of Him instead of the blasphemies which now fill the earth. Then, rather than His wrath, we will gain His protection from satan. But if prayer builds this ark, what is the ark? What is it that will save the world? The ark that will save us is conversion. It is our protection, our ark. It will protect us from the world pool of sin of which Our Lady is saying we are sinking in. Our Lady says: December 15, 1983 Call the world to conversion. Everything depends on your conversion. 14

16 The ark or our conversion, if not built, will be the cause of doom within the world. Our Lady is giving us that last chance, just as the priest gave the woman that last chance. The priest and family suffered to see her spit on the Crucifix and reject Jesus, and on September 26, 1983, Our Lady revealed the world was doing the same to Jesus. September 26, 1983 My Son suffers very much because the world is not converting As the Crucifix was the last chance, the last grace to accept Jesus and convert, Our Lady tells us the same that this is our last chance. May 2, 1982 I have come to call the world to conversion for the last time Fortunately, Our Lady leads the village of Medjugorje to still more fervent prayer, and conversion did begin. If we could ask Our Lady what is Her single most important message over the last seventeen years* * This was originally written in These writings often relate to the future, even prophetically, that can be shown in the present by the date it was originally written. 17 of apparitions, what would She say? Our Lady revealed it in 1996! We must question ourselves of why would it not be conversion, the ark, that ship which will save us from the purification which is coming, just as Noah s ark saved the few and future of mankind from the purifying waters. February 25, 1996 Dear children! Today I invite you to conversion. This is the most important message that I have given you here Yet many in the Medjugorje movement know this, but they cool off or think I will convert later. Conversion can come through prayer, by ours as well as praying for others and their conversion. Our Lady incites us to begin and pray strongly and actively, and through these prayers the Father will make the ark, the vessel of conversions. July 11, 1987 Create in your hearts a permanent prayer, because only thus will you be able to be prepared vessels. Through prayer your Father will build you into the vessels He wants 16

18 For this Our Lady says: Spring, 1983 Hasten your conversion Our Lady desires us to not just convert, but to be active in praying for conversion of others. April 8, 1984 I ask you to pray for the conversion of everyone. For that, I need your prayers. There is much doom and gloom associated with the apparitions of Our Lady. Those voices become preoccupied with chastisements and punishments from God. It is very important to understand that Our Lady s message is one of love, of hope for the future. For those who are connected to God through Our Lady, there is a bright future. For those not connected to God, no future. April 25, 1997 Dear children! Today I call you to have your life be connected with God the Creator, because only in this way will your life have meaning and you will comprehend that God is love. God sends me to 17

19 you out of love, that I may help you to comprehend that without Him there is no future or joy and, above all, there is no eternal salvation. Little children, I call you to leave sin and to accept prayer at all times, that you may in prayer come to know the meaning of your life. God gives Himself to him who seeks Him. Thank you for having responded to my call. So Our Lady s message is of a loving God, full of mercy for those who will accept Him and not reject His ways. There is no doom and gloom for God s children, only hope and salvation. Doom and gloom awaits those who reject. At the same time that there are voices focusing too much on doom and gloom, on the other side there are those who want no mention of Our Lady s messages concerning the future or catastrophes. Both sides are unbalanced. One cannot ignore Our Lady s words of chastisements and secrets. They exist, and if you believe in the apparitions of Medjugorje then one cannot partially believe. Our Lady s words, therefore, tell us of the future events which will come in the near future. The key to a balanced view is while Our Lady mentions them, the focus upon them is secondary. In proportion 18

20 to the other messages Our Lady has given, only a small portion of Her apparition time has been about secrets and chastisements. So to say it plainly, to preach doom and gloom is not the spirit of Our Lady, but to totally ignore Our Lady s messages is just as off balance. All this is said to qualify and give the proper attention and view for the next message you read here. Our Lady s plans, of which She tells us She has many, all depends on conversion. Our Lady is desperate in this utmost important message of which She calls: April 25, 1983 Be converted! It will be too late when the sign comes. Beforehand, several warnings will be given to the world. Hurry to be converted Be converted. Hurry to proclaim it. Tell everyone that it is my wish, and that I do not cease repeating it. Be converted, be converted. It is not difficult for me to suffer for you. I beg you, be converted. I will pray to my Son to spare you the punishment. Be converted without delay. You do not know the plans of God; you will not be able to know them. You will 19

21 not know what God will send, nor what He will do. I ask you only to be converted. That is what I wish. Be converted! Be ready for everything, but be converted. That is part of conversion It is incredible to read Our Lady s messages and meditate on Her in light of who She is. She begs and pleads with us as a mother would desperately call to a toddler who is about to step out in traffic to stop and turn because she has not the time to reach him before it will be fatal. It s hard to believe these emotions because She is in Heaven, yet Our Lady even surprisingly tells us She is anxious I am anxious for people to know what is happening in Medjugorje. Speak about it, so that all will be converted Our Lady also said in the same year: When you will be in Heaven, you will know why I am so pressed. One can see by Our Lady s own words that our personal future will be affected by our conversion. 20

22 The pleas and anxiousness of Our Lady parallels that of the mother whose child is about to step in the traffic. The child knows not the danger, even though he sees the cars. Somehow we are in the same situation, and Our Lady is desperately calling us to turn our lives around, convert, start a new life, a new path. June 25, 1992 My presence here is therefore to lead you on a new path, the path of salvation. Thus I call you day after day to conversion Conversion, however, does not mean to live religiously with words. Rather than words, let it be your life which speaks. October 25, 1992 I call you to begin to change your life from the beginning and that you decide for conversion not with words but with life Conversion is not something that happens once you discover Medjugorje or visit the village which is the spot of spiritual renewal of the world. No! That is the beginning of conversion. Conversion may have a great 21

23 impact in a moment of your life, but it does not end with the profound quaking your soul may have experienced. It is a daily experience. February 25, 1993 You cannot say that you are converted, because your life must become a daily conversion While we may experience a divine grace, a renewal of spirit, we cannot claim conversion, as many have, without carrying out the giving of ourselves to God. July 25, 1994 Little children, you cannot say you are mine and that you experience conversion through my messages if you are not ready to give time to God every day Through the years, we have seen many beautiful conversions. They were as flowers, radiating out such beauty that we were left breathless. Yet we have seen many wilt, brown, and die their conversions die, and not even become what they were before they flowered. It is a sad testimony of those who did not understand conversion, did not want to change further, did not want to persevere. 22

24 The grace of conversion brings an impassioned faith. Prayer is easy, resisting temptation is easy, living the messages is easy, but when the honeymoon is over, and God wishes to test your conversion, many cool off and fall away many who have an impassioned faith will cool off Conversion never ends. It lasts your entire lifetime. July 17, 1989 Conversion is a process which goes on through your entire life. Conversion is a continuous process that must be fed by receiving the life-giving Sacraments, reading the Bible, Our Lady s messages, and the lives of the Saints, and putting it into practice. The Sacraments will give us divine grace and feed our soul. The Bible will give us understanding in the heart. Our Lady s messages will enlighten the mind of the word the Bible puts in our hearts. The lives of the saints will show us how to use all these treasures and implement them into our daily life as their examples of saintly living reveals. 23

25 Our Lady told Marija receive the Sacraments, read the Bible every day, read the messages every day, read about the lives of the saints. To do so will nourish conversion. We must realize conversion of the heart is a gift, a special present, given through prayer. December 25, 1989 I intercede for you to God for Him to give you the gift of the conversion of the heart Conversion is as delicate as a flower. It must be nourished and watered. Many who followed Jesus turned from Him, never believing they would. We have seen the same in the Medjugorje movement. We encourage you to convert. We invite you to go deeper into the spiritual life, to strike out all the world s distractions, and to commit to daily conversion. We invite you here, to Caritas, to the Field where Our Lady appeared and promised from this spot to carry all your intentions before God. Come nourish your conversion. Do not come as a tourist, come in humility to bow down, to be on a spot sanctified by the Queen of Peace, appearing with twelve stars crowning Her head. 24

26 Come and climb the mountain to the Grotto La Pluie and kneel before Our Lady in a cave as a sacrifice and ask Her for help.. Bring with you, not necessarily others, but rather bring your conversion. Lay it before Our Lady. Consecrate it to Her, to Her plans. As Our Lady said: You cannot say you are converted unless you give time every day to God. If you make a visit, plan three days of personal prayer, solitude, and praying with us as a community. We wish with all our hearts to strengthen your conversion and invite you to make a personal retreat with Our Lady for conversion or strength or renewal of conversions.
