3 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Emptiness is not just a result of the Fall of man into sin, it is a manifestation of man s rebellion against God. The word for idol in both the Old and New Testaments means empty, vain, and hollow. The Hebrew word pesel, used in the second commandment, means: an image or likeness of a man or animal. Since the image is lifeless, it has no substance and is therefore empty. The Greek eidolon, also means image or likeness in the sense of being lifeless.our emptiness longs for fulfillment but does not find it in God, and we are filled with all kinds of other things. -Reuther

4 FILLED WITH ANYTHING BUT THE SPIRIT Acts 5:3- Satan fills the heart of Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 5:17-The high priest is filled with jealousy. Acts 19:28- They were filled with rage. Romans 1:29- Filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil. Ephesians 5:18- filled to drunkenness with wine. 1 Thess. 2:16- filled up with the maximum of sin. Acts 17:16- the city was full of idols. Romans 3:14- full of cursing and bitterness. 2 Peter 2:14- eyes full of adultery.

5 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT John 1:16, And of His fullness we have all received Ephesians 3:19, That you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

6 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT. Col 1:19, For it was the Father s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him. Col. 2:9, For in Him dwells all the fullness of deity in bodily form. That fullness is His fullness: Him, in His glorious person, offices, and work. - Reuther

7 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Ephesians 4:13, until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.

8 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT, Filling is also blessing and prosperity by the removal of our emptiness, just as we said about fullness. Yet we find ourselves under the mandate of a divine commandment with regard to the matter of filling. Again, John 1:16 refers to the fullness that we have all received from Christ. Eph. 3:19, on the other hand, speaks of a filling that leads to fullness: filled up to all the fullness of God

9 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT There is no conflict here, just as there is no contradiction between definitive sanctification and progressive sanctification, or full and free legal justification before God and progressive sanctification to greater holiness. We are commanded to be filled, not to be full. Fullness is something given to us and a state that grows in us. Filling and fullness are related, but they are distinct as well. - Reuther

10 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Acts 2:4- and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Acts 4:8- Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers and elders of the people Acts 4:31- And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

11 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Acts 9:17, 18, 20- So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit he got up and was baptized and began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues Acts 13:9- But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him and said Acts 11:52- And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy

12 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT We are to be filled into the realm and reality of the fullness of God here again we find the concept of filling (pursued) in contrast to fullness (possessed). - Reuther

13 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Ephesians 5:15-21, Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one another in the fear

14 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Luke 11:13, If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

15 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT The fullness of the Spirit was the consequence of the baptism of the Spirit. The baptism is what Jesus did (pouring out the Spirit from heaven); the fullness is what they received. The baptism was a unique initiatory experience; the fullness was intended to be the continuing, the permanent result, the norm. As an initiatory event, the baptism is not repeatable and cannot be lost, but the filling can be repeated and in any case needs to be maintained. If it is not maintained, it is lost. The Holy Spirit is grieved by sin and ceases to fill the sinner. Repentance is then the only road to recovery. - John Stott

16 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT The fullness of the Spirit refers to the indwelling Spirit s continuous control, in varying degrees and to varying extents, of the moral and spiritual development and mode of expression, internal and external, of a person s faculties and powers The Holy Spirit s ministry of filling refers to His temporary control or possession of the faculties and powers of a person s being, in order to enable that person to accomplish some specific task or service for God. - Dunzweiler

17 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT If we are bound to the word of God as the word of the Spirit, then no spiritual experience is valid, or from the Spirit, which is not revealed to us in His word. Much of the modern phenomenon that we hear and read about (like being slain in the Spirit, or holy barking, or things like these) are counterfeit. Stott says that a small number of such experiences are no doubt demonic, a horrible satanic counterfeit of genuine spiritual experience

18 FILLING AND FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT Jesus warned of such things Others, he says, may be psychological. Some experiences which we think are spiritual are in reality psychological, because they originate in our human psyche rather than in the Spirit of God it is not the same as to attribute it to the Devil.. it may be morally and spiritually neutral.. It is much more important to ask whether it glorifies Christ and promotes righteousness. - Reuther

19 NOT GRIEVING OR QUENCHING THE SPIRIT The very expression grieving the Spirit points to His love. An enemy is provoked if we injure him, and he is gratified if he see us injuring ourselves; only a friend- one who really loves us and wishes our welfare- can be grieved at our improper conduct. Unbelievers vex the Spirit; believers grieve Him.A persuasion and feeling of the love of the Spirit will lead believers to act in such a way as is pleasing to Him, and to avoid everything which grieves Him. - Thomas M Crie

20 NOT GRIEVING OR QUENCHING THE SPIRIT Ephesians 4:30, Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. I Thess. 5:19, Do not quench the Spirit.

21 GRIEVING THE SPIRIT- THE CONTEXT OF EPHESIANS 4:30 Falsehood and deception in our relationships with the brethren (members of the body) in the church-v.25. Sinful anger, the wrath of man-vs. 26, 31. Giving the devil an opportunity or occasion to work through us- v.27. Slothfulness in our work, stealing, and not sharing with those who have need- v. 28. Bad talk, corrupt speech, hurtful or selfish words that do not minister help and healing to those with whom we have to do who have specific needs-v.29.

22 GRIEVING THE SPIRIT- THE CONTEXT OF EPHESIANS 4:30 Bitterness, unforgiving thoughts and attitudes- v. 31. Fits of anger, angry moments, responses- v. 31. Disturbances (clamor), crying out in order to disturb and unsettle- v. 31 Slander (blasphemy about others), injuring the good name of another-v. 31. Malice, hateful thoughts, ill-will, desire to injure-v. 31. Chapter 5: Greed- v. 3. Filthiness or silly talk- v. 4. Coarse jesting- v.4.

23 NOT GRIEVING THE SPIRIT So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity

24 NOT GRIEVING THE SPIRIT Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. -Col. 3:12-17

25 NOT GRIEVING THE SPIRIT James 4:5, Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously? B.B. Warfield: It is not too much to say that we have here one of the most precious texts in the Bible. It is a declaration, based on Old Testament teaching, of the deep yearning which the Holy Spirit, which God has caused to dwell in us, feels for our undivided and unwavering devotion the text is thus revealed to us as a strong asseveration of the love of God for His people, set forth under the figure of a faithful husband s yearning love for his erring bride.

26 QUENCHING THE SPIRIT Mark 9:38-41, Now John answered Him, saying, Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us. But Jesus said, Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. For he who is not against us is on our side. For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

27 QUENCHING THE SPIRIT Filled with the Spirit in our Motives- Why we are doing it Filled with the Spirit in Expectations- What we expect to happen Filled with the Spirit in Responses- How we react to what happens Filled with the Spirit in Pursuits- Where we are going in all of this

28 QUENCHING THE SPIRIT It seems to me that the issue of quenching the Spirit in the work of the Gospel and the Kingdom has to do with these four things. We tend to get in the way of the Spirit s work when we have impure motives, unreasonable expectations, bad responses, and spend our energies in pursuing the wrong things, or not the best things for the specific situation God has placed us in. So we need to search our hearts, be considerate of the people in whom we have high expectations, be observant regarding the way we come across, and ask God for wisdsom in our work so that we will pursue the things that most contribute to the powerful working of the Spirit. - Reuther

29 THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT James 3:16-18, For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

30 THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol, against such there is no law.

31 THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT most of these items have to do not with the internal life of the believer, but with the corporate life of the community. While it is true that individuals must love, work toward peace, express forbearance, kindness, and goodness, and be characterized by gentleness, in Pauline ethics these virtues characterize God s relationship toward His people

32 THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT The Spirit bears fruit in our individual lives for the same purpose, to be toward one another the way God is toward us Our tendency is to read this list as though it were first of all a description of personal piety my concern is that in context Paul probably intended all of these virtues that should characterize the life of the Christian community as it lives out its corporate life with one another in the world. - Gordon Fee
