Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. This is the one who came by water and blood Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. 2

What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, Don t you know that you yourselves are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in your midst? Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 4

He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. by the power of signs and wonders, through the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ. I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit s power, This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, 5

6 a letter from Christ 12:8 to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing 12:9 by that one Spirit, For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body 12:13 whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, 14:1 14:2 14:12 14:37 3:3 Galatians 3:2 Galatians 5:5 Galatians 5:16 Galatians 5:18 Galatians 6:1 Galatians 6:8 Ephesians 3:5 especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church. If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord s command. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. [ Doing Good to All ] Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God s holy apostles and prophets. Ephesians 4:3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel [ Imitating Christ s Humility ] Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit. Do not quench the Spirit. The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. [ Warning Against Unbelief ] So, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who 7

To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. The one who keeps God s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 8
